Abstract:As to the number of subcategories and scope of classification of the Chinese collective classifiers, there are different opinions among Chinese researchers. Using the methods of free sorting, this study explores the subcategories of collective classifiers in order to provide some psycholinguistic evidence to the classification of collective classifiers. The result shows that there are two dimensions in the semantic space of collective classifiers: 1) The nature of modified objects: animate/inanimate; 2) The quantity of the collectivity: small/large. The collective classifiers are divided into two categories: 1) Collective classifiers mainly modifying animate objects: 2) Collective classifiers mainly modifying inanimate objects. The latter category can be further divided into four subcategories; 1) Those mainly modifying a small collectivity with one or two objects; 2) Those mainly modifying a large collectivity denoting thin and flat objects which can be phenomenally perceived sometimes; 3) Those mainly modifying a large collectivity composed of big objects, the individuals of which can still be perceived phenomenally; 4) Those mainly modifying large collectivities, the individuals of which have descended to texture that can't be perceived phenomenally.
