Abstract:The evolution of the three-dimensional time-developing mixing layer is simulated numerically using the pseudo-spectral method. The initial perturbations used in this study consisted of the two-dimensional fundamental wave and the streamwise-invariant three-dimensional disturbance. A comparison of the formations of the streamwise vortices with different amplitude functions for three-dimensional disturbances is made. In one case the results are similar to that of Rogers & Moser([1]), whereas a different way in which the quadrupole forms and sudden expansion of the rib are observed in another case. The simulation also confirms that the stretching by the forming roller rather than Rayleigh centrifugal instability is responsible for the formation of the rib. Finally, numerical flow visualization results are presented.

Abstract:The evolution of unforced and weakly damped two-dimensional turbulence over random rough topography presents two extreme states. If the initial kinetic energy [Formula: see text] is sufficiently high, then the topography is a weak perturbation, and evolution is determined by the spontaneous formation and mutual interaction of coherent axisymmetric vortices. High-energy vortices roam throughout the domain and mix the background potential vorticity (PV) to homogeneity, i.e., in the region between vortices, which is most of the domain, the relative vorticity largely cancels the topographic PV. If [Formula: see text] is low, then vortices still form but they soon become locked to topographic features: Anticyclones sit above topographic depressions and cyclones above elevated regions. In the low-energy case, with topographically locked vortices, the background PV retains some spatial variation. We develop a unified framework of topographic turbulence spanning these two extreme states of low and high energy. A main organizing concept is that PV homogenization demands a particular kinetic energy level [Formula: see text]. [Formula: see text] is the separator between high-energy evolution and low-energy evolution.

Abstract:We propose a natural model to probe in a controlled fashion the instability of interacting vortex rings shed from the edge of an oblate spheroid disk of major diameter c, undergoing oscillations of frequency f_{0} and amplitude A. We perform a Floquet stability analysis to determine the characteristics of the instability modes, which depend strongly on the azimuthal (integer) wave number m. We vary two key control parameters, the Keulegan-Carpenter number K_{C}=2πA/c and the Stokes number β=f_{0}c^{2}/ν, where ν is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. We observe two distinct flow regimes. First, for sufficiently small β, and hence low frequency of oscillation corresponding to relatively weak interaction between sequentially shedding vortex rings, symmetry breaking occurs directly to a single unstable mode with m=1. Second, for sufficiently large yet fixed values of β, corresponding to a higher oscillation frequency and hence stronger ring-ring interaction, the onset of asymmetry is predicted to occur due to two branches of high m instabilities as the amplitude is increased, with m=1 structures being dominant only for sufficiently large values of K_{C}. These two branches can be distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The region in (K_{C},β) parameter space where these two high m instability branches arise can be described accurately in terms of naturally defined Reynolds numbers, using appropriately chosen characteristic length scales. We subsequently carry out direct numerical simulations of the fully three-dimensional flow to verify the principal characteristics of the Floquet analysis, in particular demonstrating that high wave-number symmetry-breaking generically occurs when vortex rings sequentially interact sufficiently strongly.

Abstract:The structures of the flow induced by a disk performing sinusoidal oscillations in fluid at rest are investigated mainly by means of flow visualization. We vary the Keulegan-Carpenter numbers between 0.3 and 1.5, and the Stokes numbers between 100 and 1200. Consistent with the linear stability analysis, we observe organized modes with clearly countable numbers of waves emerging as sequential vortex rings shedding from the oscillating disk. These organized modes can be further divided into two branches, which are distinguished by the phase properties of the vortical structures above and below the disk. The highest wavenumber m=9 is recorded in our visualization.

Abstract:Transition and turbulence production in a hypersonic boundary layer is investigated in a Mach 6 quiet wind tunnel using Rayleigh-scattering visualization, fast-response pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry. It is found that the second instability acoustic mode is the key modulator of the transition process. The second mode experiences a rapid growth and a very fast annihilation due to the effect of bulk viscosity. The second mode interacts strongly with the first vorticity mode to directly promote a fast growth of the latter and leads to immediate transition to turbulence.

Abstract:Using the high-order high-resolution scheme,three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed for the spatially developing compressible plane mixing layer at convective Mach number 1.2.The full developing process of instability,formation of λ vortices and hairpin vortices,break down of large vortex structures,the appearance of colayer structures and finally the structures of the saturation state in the sense of momentum thickness are produced in the simulations.Additionally,shocks are generated in the mixing layer.Based on their different generation mechanisms shocks are categorized into three types: free-stream shocks,counter-rotating-vortex shocks and single-vortex shocks.The shocks are mainly generated by the strong swirl motion of the vortices,which produce the relative supersonic domain with low pressure and also the domain with reverse pressure gradient.The appearance of shocks inhibits the mixing layer from drawing mass and momentum from the free stream.It also prevents the fluids from mixing uniformly in the interior of the mixing layer.

Abstract:The small vortex generation is a key issue of the mechanism for late flow transition and turbulence generation. It was widely accepted that small length vortices were generated by large vortex breakdown. According to our recent DNS, we find that the hairpin vortex structure is very stable and never breaks down to small pieces. On the other hand, we recognize that there are strong positive spikes besides the ring neck in the spanwise direction. The strongly positive spikes are caused by second sweeps which are generated by perfectly circular and perpendicularly standing vortex rings. The second sweep brings energy from the invisid region downdraft to the bottom of the boundary layers, which generates high shear layers around the positive <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://spikes.Since" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the high shear layer is not stable, all small length scales (turbulence) are generated around high shear layers especially near the wall surface (bottom of boundary layers). Abstract:Dynamics and instability of a vortex ring impinging on a wall were investigated by means of large eddy simulation for two vortex core thicknesses corresponding to thin and thick vortex rings. Various fundamental mechanisms dictating the flow behaviors, such as evolution of vortical structures, formation of vortices wrapping around vortex rings, instability and breakdown of vortex rings, and transition from laminar to turbulent state, have been studied systematically. The evolution of vortical structures is elucidated and the formation of the loop-like and hair-pin vortices wrapping around the vortex rings (called briefly wrapping vortices) is clarified. Analysis of the enstrophy of wrapping vortices and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in flow field indicates that the formation and evolution of wrapping vortices are closely associated with the flow transition to turbulent state. It is found that the temporal development of wrapping vortices and the growth rate of axial flow generated around the circumference of the core region for the thin ring are faster than those for the thick ring. The azimuthal instabilities of primary and secondary vortex rings are analyzed and the development of modal energies is investigated to reveal the flow transition to turbulent state. The modal energy decay follows a characteristic -5/3 power law, indicating that the vortical flow has become turbulence. Moreover, it is identified that the TKE with a major contribution of the azimuthal component is mainly distributed in the core region of vortex rings. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight of the mechanisms relevant to the vortical flow evolution from laminar to turbulent state.
Evolution of Three-Dimensional Temporally Evolving Plane Mixing Layers Under Strong Vortex Disturbances

Abstract:The evolution of three-dimensional temporally evolving plane mixing layers under strong vortex disturbances is investigated by DNS method. The convective Mach number and the Reynolds number used is set to be 0.8 and 200. The isentropic vortex is chosen as the model for vortex disturbances. Three different directions of the vortex axis (streamwise, spanwise, and normal directions) are considered in the simulations. For comparison, the computation with linear unstable oblique waves as disturbances is also executed. The results show that in the case of the streamwise vortex disturbance, significant increase in vorticity thickness can be found only in the early stage of development. In the case of the normal vortex disturbance, a high growth rate of the plane mixing layer is kept all the time, while in the linear wave case saturation occurs in the later stage of the simulation and the vorticity thickness stops increasing further. In the case of the spanwise vortex disturbance, the flow is quite quiet and the vorticity thickness attains the lowest growth rate. © 2009 Tsinghua University Press.

Abstract:The dynamics of vortex structures in turbulence have been investigated statistically in pseudospectral numerical simulations of moderate Reynolds number turbulence. Coherent features of vortex stretching dynamics, as manifested in the alignment of the vorticity vector with a principal axis of the rate of strain, are investigated with an emphasis on their time development in turbulence decay from a random gaussian field. In addition, we have observed a tendency in developed turbulence for velocity vectors to lie in the plane formed by the two principal stretching directions. These phenomena provide a mechanism for depletion of nonlinearity in turbulence. The spatial and temporal coherence of vortex structures has been further studied using recently developed techniques which combine dynamical visualisation with statistical sampling analysis.

Abstract:This paper proposes a resolution to the conundrum of the roles of convective and absolute instability in transition of the rotating-disk boundary layer. It also draws some comparison with swept-wing flows. Direct numerical simulations based on the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations of the flow over the surface of a rotating disk with modelled roughness elements are presented. The rotating-disk flow has been of particular interest for stability and transition research since the work by Lingwood ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 299, 1995, pp. 17–33) where an absolute instability was found. Here stationary disturbances develop from roughness elements on the disk and are followed from the linear stage, growing to saturation and finally transitioning to turbulence. Several simulations are presented with varying disturbance amplitudes. The lowest amplitude corresponds approximately to the experiment by Imayama et al. ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 745, 2014 a , pp. 132–163). For all cases, the primary instability was found to be convectively unstable, and secondary modes were found to be triggered spontaneously while the flow was developing. The secondary modes further stayed within the domain, and an explanation for this is a proposed globally unstable secondary instability. For the low-amplitude roughness cases, the disturbances propagate beyond the threshold for secondary global instability before becoming turbulent, and for the high-amplitude roughness cases the transition scenario gives a turbulent flow directly at the critical Reynolds number for the secondary global instability. These results correspond to the theory of Pier ( J. Engng Maths , vol. 57, 2007, pp. 237–251) predicting a secondary absolute instability. In our simulations, high temporal frequencies were found to grow with a large amplification rate where the secondary global instability occurred. For smaller radial positions, low-frequency secondary instabilities were observed, tripped by the global instability.

Abstract:Within the incompressible three-dimensional Euler equations, we study the pancake-like high vorticity regions, which arise during the onset of developed hydrodynamic turbulence. We show that these regions have an internal fine structure consisting of three vortex layers. Such a layered structure, together with the power law of self-similar evolution of the pancake, prevents development of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability.

Abstract:Topological transition and helicity conversion of vortex torus knots and links are studied using direct numerical simulations of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We find three topological transitional routes (viz. merging, reconnection and transition to turbulence) in the evolution of vortex knots and links over a range of torus aspect ratios and winding numbers. The topological transition depends not only on the initial topology but also on the initial geometry of knots/links. For small torus aspect ratios, the initially knotted or linked vortex tube rapidly merges into a vortex ring with a complete helicity conversion from the writhe and link components to the twist. For large torus aspect ratios, the vortex knot or link is untied into upper and lower coiled loops via the first vortex reconnection, with a helicity fluctuation including loss of writhe and link, and generation of twist. Then, the relatively unstable lower loop can undergo a secondary reconnection to split into multiple small vortices with a similar helicity fluctuation. Surprisingly, for moderate torus aspect ratios, the incomplete reconnection of tangled vortex loops together with strong vortex interactions triggers transition to turbulence, in which the topological helicity decomposition fails due to the breakdown of vortex core lines.

Abstract:It has been stated inPreface of this book that the physics of vortical flows can be fully understood only if the subject is put on a broad background about the splitting and coupling of different fundamental dynamic processes in fluid motion. The concept of process splitting has been repeatedly touched upon in Chap.1, both kinematically and dynamically, when we discuss dilatation and vorticity, decomposition of velocity gradient, strain-rate tensor, dynamic constitutive relation and stress tensor, the Navier-Stokes equations, and dominant dimensionless parameters. Accordingly, the stress force is split into normal and tangent components, and velocity boundary condition is split to normal no-through and tangent no-slip conditions. In this chapter we present a systematic theory on this subject, starting from a physical explanation of fundamental processes in fluid motion, in non-mathematical language.

Abstract:Floquet stability analysis has been employed to identify modes of three-dimensional (3D) instability in the flow over a circular cylinder of diameter D above a moving wall at a gap height of G = 0.2D, beyond the onset of two-dimensional vortex shedding. Two subharmonic modes (mode C1 and mode C2) and one long-wavelength quasi-periodic mode (mode QPL) are revealed. The characteristics of these 3D modes are discussed in detail. The results of 3D direct simulations show that it is the intensively nonlinear modal interactions that lead to a chaotic final flow state at higher Reynolds numbers, rather than the interference of the shear layer caused by the no-slip moving wall.

The Maintenance of Coherent Vortex Topology by Lagrangian Chaos in Drift-Rossby Wave Turbulence

Abstract:This work introduces the "potential vorticity bucket brigade," a mechanism for explaining the resilience of vortex structures in magnetically confined fusion plasmas and geophysical flows. Drawing parallels with zonal jet formation, we show how inhomogeneous patterns of mixing can reinforce, rather than destroy non-zonal flow structure. We accomplish this through an exact stochastic Lagrangian representation of vorticity transport, together with a near-integrability property, which relates coherent flow topology to fluid relabeling symmetries. We demonstrate these ideas in the context of gradient-driven magnetized plasma turbulence, though the tools we develop here are model-agnostic and applicable beyond the system studied here.

The Unified Transition Stages in Linearly Stable Shear Flows

Abstract:Abrupt transition to turbulence may occur in pipe and channel flows at moderate flow rates, an unexpected event according to linear stability theory, and has been an open problem in fluid dynamics for more than a century. Extensive numerical simulations and statistical analyses of the plane-Poiseuille flow have been performed. A sequence of transition stages, which includes the equilibrium localized turbulence, the temporally persistent turbulence and the uniform turbulence, is identified. The spread of turbulent band is mainly caused by an oblique extension at moderate Reynolds numbers and band splitting at high Reynolds numbers. The small scale regime of a turbulent band coincides with the oblique swirl region of the mean flow in planes parallel to the walls. Furthermore, this transition scenario is shown quantitatively to be universal for channel and pipe flows in terms of a locally defined Reynolds number.
