Abstract:Lead (Pb) isotopic composition analysis is a useful tool to accurately identify the origin of Pb in environmental media. The existing calculation method of the contribution of Pb sources from Pb isotope ratios greatly restricted the development of Pb contamination source apportionment. In the present study, a new distance model for calculating the mass proportion of Pb sources, which is based on the distance between the samples and the possible Pb sources in the Pb isotope ratios plot, was presented. The inverse distance model was applied to calculate the contribution proportion of two Pb sources in three previous studies. The average absolute differences between the proportions calculated by the conventional binary mixing equation and the inverse distance model were 0.21%, 1% and 1.9%, respectively, indicating that the new model agreeably calculated the contribution of two Pb sources. The anthropogenic sources proportion (52%) calculated by the inverse distance model of three Pb sources to park soil Pb in Shanghai was comparable to the result that was calculated by the conventional ternary mixing equation (53%), which showed the validity of the new model in calculating the contribution proportion of three Pb sources. Rational results were obtained by the inverse distance model in calculating the contribution of four Pb sources, illustrating that the new model has potential use in calculating the apportionment of four or more Pb sources. These results suggest that the inverse distance model is a simple and efficient approach for calculating the contribution proportion of various Pb contamination sources, and provides a prospective in the study of this field.

Abstract:Ombrotrophic bogs are faithful archive of atmospheric metal deposition, but the potential for fens to reconstruct environmental change is often underestimated. In this study, some new data on the Pb depositional history in northeast China were provided using two 210Pb-dated peat sequences from a poor fen in the Fenghuang Mountain of Heilongjiang province. Anthropogenic, detritic and atmospheric soil sources were discriminated using a two-step sequential digestion (weak acid leaching to liberate mobile Pb which is often regarded as anthropogenic Pb, especially for recent samples) and a ratio of unsupported 210Pb and supported 210Pb with the logic of that the 214Pb mainly represents the residual detritus (constant throughout the core) and the unsupported 210Pb arises from atmospheric fallout. A higher 210Pb/214Pb suggests more contributions from atmospheric deposition to the Pb content in the peat, and a ratio of 10 was defined to indicate the boundary between detritic input and atmospheric deposition. The detritic Pb was estimated to be 10–13 mg·kg−1, the anthropogenic Pb ranged from 10–80 mg·kg−1, and the atmospheric soil-derived Pb ranged from < 5 mg·kg−1 to 30 mg·kg−1. The history of anthropogenic Pb pollution over the last 150 years was reconstructed, and the calculated Pb deposition rate (AR Pb) ranged from 5 to 56 mg·m−2·yr−1. Using Ti as a reliable reference, the enrichment factor of Pb (EF Pb) relative to the upper continental crust was calculated. Both AR Pb and EF Pb increased with time, especially after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. This is consistent with increasing industrialization and coal burning in the last 60 years in northeast China. The present record of anthropogenic Pb deposition was consistent with the previous reports and an increasing trend of environmental pollution due to anthropogenic activities, in contrasts to Europe and North America which have experienced a major environmental cleanup. For the first time, this work estimates atmospheric Pb deposition via a minerotrophic peat core in China. This will enhance the use of peat archives for studies of environmental change.

Abstract:Traditionally, lead (Pb) in rice grains has been thought to be mostly derived from soil, and the contribution of aerosol Pb remains so far unknown. Based on a meta-analysis, we surprisingly found rice Pb content decreased proportionally with urban atmospheric Pb concentrations in major rice-growing provinces in China during 2001-2015, suggestive of the strong influence of long-range Pb transport on agricultural environment. With the combination of field survey, field experiment, as well as a predictive model, we confirmed high contribution of atmospheric exposure to rice grain Pb in China. We for the first time developed a predictive mathematical model which revealed that aerosol Pb accumulation ratios of rice grains were related to both grain weight and accumulation types. We successfully predicted the national-scale rice Pb in China on the basis of the public data of urban PM2.5 from 19 rice-growing provinces and proposed a seasonal atmospheric Pb limit of 0.20 mu g m(-3) based on the safe threshold level of Pb in rice, which was much lower than the current limit of 1 mu g m(-3) set in China.

Abstract:Economic reforms in China since 1978 have promoted nationwide socioeconomic advancement but led to a considerable amount of environmental pollution. The distribution and sources of Pb in a typical peri-urban industrial part of Baoji, China, were assessed by determining the Pb contents and isotopic compositions in 52 topsoil samples from the study area. The topsoil samples were polluted averagely with 40.88 mg Pb kg−1, was 1.86 times higher than the Pb content of local background soil (22.04 mg kg−1). Pb isotopic compositions were determined by analyzing samples prepared using total digestion and acid extraction methods. Radiogenic isotopes contributed more to the Pb concentrations in the acid extracts than in the total digests. This was shown by the 207/206Pb and 208/206Pb ratios, which were 0.845–0.88 and 2.088–2.128, respectively, in the acid extracts and 0.841–0.875 and 2.086–2.125, respectively, in the total digests. This indicates that anthropogenic sources of Pb could be identified more sensitively in acid extracts than in total digests. The Pb isotope ratios showed that burning coal and smelting ore are the predominant anthropogenic sources of Pb in the study area, i.e., a lead–zinc smelter and a coking plant are major sources of Pb in the study area.

Abstract:Elevated lead (Pb) has been widely observed in mangrove sediments due to human activities, yet understanding the sources of Pb in these sediments and the factors influencing Pb accumulation is challenging. Here, we combined Pb isotopes with partial extraction methods to study Pb contamination levels in mangrove sediments from the eastern and western parts of the Maowei Sea, China. Our results showed that the Pb in the leachate and residual fraction was mainly from anthropogenic and natural sources, respectively. The use of 204 Pb isotope analysis can reveal some overlooked differences between anthropogenic and natural sources. Calculation by Bayesian mixing model showed no significant difference in the total anthropogenic contribution between the two sites, but the relative contribution of each end member differed. The contribution of Pb/Zn ores was much higher in the eastern sites (30.9 ± 5.1%) than in the west (18.4 ± 5.5%), while that of agricultural activities was much lower in the east (5.2 ± 3.1%) than in the west (13.5 ± 4.6%). The elevated anthropogenic Pb accumulation in mangrove sediments was ascribed to organic matter. This study provides more data on Pb isotopic composition and new insights into Pb biogeochemistry in the mangrove environment.
