Abstract:It is 100 years since the well-know Mohr-Coulomb strength theory was established in 1900. A considerable amount of theoretical and experimental research on strength theory of materials under complex stress state was done in the 20th Century. This review article presents a survey of the advances in strength theory (yield criteria, failure criterion, etc) of materials (including matellic materials, rock, soil, concrete, ice, iron, polymers, energetic material, etc) under complex stress, discusses the relationship among various criteria, and gives a method of choosing a reasonable failure criterion for applications in research and engineering. Three series of strength theories, the unified yield criterion, the unified strength theory, and others are summarized. This review article contains 1163 references regarding the strength theories. This review also includes a biref discussion of the computational implementation of the strength theories and multi-axial fatigue.

Abstract:Throughout the several-hundred-year-long history of the concept of strength, inaccurate material strength as a result of the size effect and the inconsistency of strength theories have been two continuous and challenging issues, and have even been taken to be inherent attributes of material strength. Applying the structural stressing state theory and method, this study experimentally investigates the uniaxial load-bearing process of concrete specimens and reveals their stressing state mutation features at specific load levels. Exploration of this general feature resulted in the discovery of essential strength, which is basically without size effect. Then, biaxial and triaxial experiments with concrete specimens were conducted in order to obtain the results for various combinations of principal stresses on essential strength. Consequently, according to Yu's unified strength theory, the formula for strength of concrete was determined by fitting the relation between the combined principal stresses and the essential strength, which was verified by experiments carried out using natural marble specimens. Essential strength could promote the accuracy of strength indices, and the formula for strength might replace the existing strength theories for brittle materials. The initial solution of these two classic issues could make a new contribution to Yu's unified strength theory and its final goal, promoting related research on material strength and leading to a more rational use of material strength in practical engineering.

Abstract:This paper firstly presents the latest development of high strength/performance structural materials in recent years. The rational applications and examples of high strength/performance structural materials in the structural systems to obtain high performance are discussed and presented. The positive functions of high strength reinforcement used in reinforced concrete frame structures, that can enhance the structural performance against earthquake and reduce the structural seismic damage, are investigated in detail with nonlinear pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. The results show that the high seismic performance of the reinforced concrete frames, including a delayed appearance of plastic hinges at the bottom story columns feet, to form a rational failure mechanism under strong earthquake, and a small. residual. displacement after earthquake that cause an easy retrofitting after earthquake, can be obtained by replacing normal strength reinforcement with high strength reinforcement in the columns. Finally, the development of the safety and design theory for the structures using high strength/performance materials are discussed.

Abstract:Shotcrete has been widely used in the excavation of caverns and tunnels as a key load-bearing element in the support system. However, the interfacial stresses and bond strengths within the composite structures formed by the interaction of geologic bodies and tectonic formations are not well understood, which can lead to safety accidents and excessive wastage of support materials in engineering. To address this gap, rock-concrete composite specimens were created using six distinct types of surrounding rocks. The strength law of composite specimens was analyzed, and the uniaxial compressive strength prediction model of composite specimens was derived based on Mohr−Coulomb strength yield criterion. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength of the composite specimen changes with the change of rock type, which is between the strength of rock and concrete. The uniaxial peak strength and elastic modulus of composite specimens are linearly positively correlated with the ratio (Y) of concrete-rock elastic modulus, which is easily affected by concrete properties. However, the peak strain is linearly and negatively correlated with Y, which is greatly influenced by rock. The rock-concrete interface of the composite specimen plays an important role in the failure of the specimen, which changes the stress transfer state of the composite specimen, produces uncoordinated deformation, and finally causes the failure of the specimen. The theoretical and test value error of the derived composite specimen uniaxial compressive strength prediction model are –1.19%~12.20%, and the theoretical calculation model can be used to predict the uniaxial compressive strength of rock-concrete composite specimens.

Abstract:Strength theory deals with the yield and failure of materials under complex stress state. Strength theory includes the yield criteria and failure criteria as well as the multi-axial fatigue criteria, multi-axial creep condition and material models in computational mechanics and computer codes, etc. It is an important foundation for researches on the strength of materials and structures. Strength theory is widely used in physics, mechanics, material science and engineering including civil, mechanical, hydraulic, aeronautic and astronautic, etc. It is of great significance in theoretical research and engineering application, and is also very important for the effective utilization of materials. Particularly for design purposes, it is important that a reliable strength prediction be available for various combinations of multi-axial stresses. It is an interdisciplinary field where physicists, mechanical and civil engineers interact in a closed loop. Strength theory is a very unusual and wonderful subject. The object is very simple, but the problem is very complex. It is one of the earliest objects, but it is still remaining open up to now. Great considerable efforts have been devoted to the formulation of strength theories and to their correlation with test data, but no single model or criterion has emerged which is fully adequate. Hundreds of models or criteria were proposed. It seems as if an old Chinese word said: “let a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools of thought contend”. About 85 equations of failure criteria are presented in this paper. This paper presents a summary of the advances in strength theory (including yield criteria, failure criterion, etc.) of materials under complex stress. About 80 kinds of failure criteria are reviewed and the relationship among them is discussed. The criteria are categorized and guidelines on selection of reasonable and failure criteria in researches and engineering applications are offered. The prospects for strength theories in the near future is also briefly discussed. It includes true triaxial test and confining tri-axial test (conventional triaxial test or false triaxial test), economic effect of strength theory, failure criterion for anisotropic materials and composite materials, failure criterion for porous materials and multi-phase materials, strength theories for other special materials, relations with shakedown, polyaxial fatigue, creep, damage and fracture, corner singularity and computational implementation of strength theories in computer codes, strength theories of materials under different environment, the esthetics of strength theories and researches in strength theory at different scales. The advances in strength theories are summarized under the framework of continuum and engineering application.

Abstract:The constant mi is a fundamental parameter required in the Hoek–Brown (H–B) failure criterion for estimating rock strength. Triaxial tests for the calculation of this constant are time-consuming and expensive. In this paper, a new perspective is presented for the physical meaning of the parameter mi of the H–B model in consideration of the contact friction coefficient. A correlation between the contact friction coefficient and mi is established using published data. A practical approach is proposed to determine the value of the parameter mi. In addition, previously proposed methods of estimating the residual strength of rock are reviewed. A novel method based on the H–B failure criterion is established to predict the residual strength of rock. The single model parameter used in the new model controls the residual strength nonlinearity. The strengths predicted by the proposed method for limestone, granite, slate, and sandstone are in good agreement with those measured during laboratory tests. The corresponding errors are within a range of 15%. This method is applied to an actual rock mass around a tunnel in the Hanjiang to Weihe River Project of China.

Abstract:A non-linear Unified Strength criterion for rock material is presented. It is the development of the Unified Strength Theory (in: M. Jono, T. Inoue (Eds.), Mechanical Behaviour of Materials-VI (ICM-6), Pergamon, Oxford, 1991, pp. 841–846) and the modification of the Hoek–Brown strength criterion (Underground Excavations in Rock, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, 1980). The effect of intermediate principal stress on rock strength is considered in the non-linear Unified Strength criterion. The Hoek–Brown criterion is a single-shear strength criterion that forms the lower bound, and the non-linear twin-shear strength criterion forms the upper bound in the deviatoric plane. All the failure criteria ranging from the Hoek–Brown criterion (lower bound) and the non-linear twin-shear criterion (upper bound) and a series of criteria ranging between these two bounds may be introduced by the non-linear Unified Strength criterion. The theory can also be generalized to rock mass strength.

Abstract:On the basis of the prevailing failure criterion for concrete, an improved strength criterion was presented. Through linear-interpolation of unified twin shear strength (UTSS) theory, the experimental tensile and compressive meridians were introduced. Furthermore,several widely used experimental curves offered the relationship between and hydrostatic stress. The general characteristics of concrete failure surface, such as convexity, open-endedness and three-axis symmetry about the hydrostatic axis were also fulfilled. Comparison with experimental results showed that the criterion could predict concrete strength more accurately. This construction procedure for strength criterion from UTSS theory is also suitable for other engineering materials.

Abstract:Strength theory deals with the yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state.It is an important foundation for research on the strength of materials and structures.It is of great significance in theoretical research and engineering application,and is also very important for the effective utilization of materials.Particularly for design purposes,it is important that a reliable strength prediction be available for various combinations of multiaxial stresses.Unified strength theory is a new systematic theory.The SD effect(strength difference in tensile strength and comp-[GK2]ressive strength of materials),effect of normal stress,effect of hydrostatic stress,effect of intermediate principal stress and the effect of failure criterion on the results of structural analysis are taken into account in the unified strength theory.The unified strength theory was originated and developed in Xi’an.It is developed and applied by many researchers in China,Japan,Singapore,USA,Australia,Sweden and others.This paper presents a summary of the advances of the unified strength theory and its applications in civil and hydraulic engineering;including unified slip line field(plane strain),unified characteristic line field(plane stress and spatial axisymmtric structures),unified solutions of limit analysis of plates,shells and other structures.The advances in the unified strength theory are summarized on the framework of continuum and engineering application.The detail of the unified strength theory can be found in a new book published by Springer recently(YU Mao-hong,Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications.Berlin,Springer,2004).The comment of Springer to the unified strength theory is as follows:“It is completely new theory dealing with the yield and failure of materials under multi-axial stresses.It provides a system of yield and failure criteria adopted for most materials,from metallic materials to rock,concretes,soils,polymers etc.The unified strength theory has been applied successfully to analyze the elastic limit,plastic limit capacities,the dynamic response behavior for some structures under static and moderate impulsive load,and may be implemented in some elasto-plastic finite element computer codes.The unified strength theory is described in detail and by using this theory a series of results can be obtained.The unified strength theory can improve the conservative Mohr-Coulomb theory,and since intermediate principal stress is not taken into account in the Mohr-Coulomb theory and most experimental data is not pertainable to the Mohr-Coulomb theory,a considerable economic benefit may be obtained.The book can also increase the effect of most commercial finite element computer codes.

Abstract:Traditional shear design procedures for concrete structures rely on empirical equations derived from laboratory experiments and lack the type of adequate theory that forms the basis of flexural design. As shear resistance depends on so many variables and because laboratory tests do not cover the full practical range of parameters, empirical shear design equations can result in structures with inadequate shear strength. Recent failures of such structures have highlighted the need for shear design provisions solidly based on an adequate theory. This paper introduces such a theory and explains the simple design models derived from the theory, which include a strut-and-tie model for disturbed regions and a sectional model for flexural regions. These models form the basis of the shear provisions on the 2004 Canadian standard for the design of concrete structures. In the current paper, results from nine major experimental series are compared with predictions from the new shear provisions and with predictions from the shear provisions of the Eurocode and the American Concrete Institute code. It is demonstrated that the new shear design provisions are capable of predicting the shear strength of reinforced concrete members and prestressed concrete members with considerably greater reliability.

Abstract:In this paper, the unified strength theory proposed by Yu Mao-hong in 1991 is used to develop new strength formulae for rock surrounding a tunnel. The new formulae can be applied to an elastic–plastic material. The formulae have a series of expressions with the unified parameter, especially variations such as the well-known Kastner and Airy formulae, which are widely used in rock mechanics and engineering. These formulae are derived on the basis of the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. For the strength-weakening (plastic-softening) of geomaterials, the analytical solutions for the radius of the plastic residual zones, radius of the plastic-softening zones, and displacement around the opening are presented according to the elastoplastic-softening – residual plastic, tri-linear stress–strain model. In addition, the derivation for the stress state in the surrounding rock is given. The Kastner formula, Airy formula, and available solutions can be considered as special cases in the new strength formula. The influence of softening, shear dilatancy, and different strength models on the results is analyzed. The results presented in this paper are useful for analyzing surrounding rock with various stress conditions and reinforcement of caves.

Abstract:Rock materials failures are accompanied by the co-existence of various failure mechanisms, including rock fracturing, shearing, and compaction yield. These mechanisms manifest macroscopically as multiple failure modes and nonlinear strength characteristics related to stress levels. Considering the limitations of current rock mechanics strength theories, which are primarily derived from single failure mechanisms, this study evaluates the applicability of alternative strength theories. Based on the extensional-strain criterion and the PMC (Paul-Mohr-Coulomb) model, a piecewise linear strength model was proposed that is suitable for analyzing multiple failure mechanisms in rocks, revealing the intrinsic mechanisms of multi-mechanism rock material failure. A multiple failure mechanism strength model in the form of inequalities was proposed, using the generalized shear stress, mean stress, and stress Lode angle as parameters. Strength tests conducted on sandstone and granite rock material samples under different stress conditions revealed distinct piecewise linear strength characteristics for both rock types, validating the rationality and applicability of the multiple failure mechanism model. The findings construct a multi-mechanism failure model for rocks, providing enhanced predictive capabilities and aiding in the prevention of rock structural failures.

Abstract:It has been two decades since the first presentation of “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under complex stress state” at ICM-6 held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The twin-shear element model and a new strength theory were proposed at ICM-6. However, only the two equations were introduced, the characteristics and its applications of this strength theory have not been studied in details. A great deal of researches on this new strength theory and its applications are developed since then by Yu and other scholars at other Universities and Institutes in some countries. Some behaviour of the unified strength theory are described here. The advances in the unified strength theory and its applications are summarized briefly in the framework of continuum mechanics and engineering application.

Abstract:Strength theory is the basic theory for calculating and designing the strength of engineering materials in civil, hydraulic, mechanical, aerospace, military, and other engineering disciplines. Therefore, the comprehensive study of the generalized nonlinear strength theory (GNST) of geomaterials has significance for the construction of engineering rock strength. This paper reviews the GNST of geomaterials to demonstrate the research status of nonlinear strength characteristics of geomaterials under complex stress paths. First, it systematically summarizes the research progress of GNST (classical and empirical criteria). Then, the latest research the authors conducted over the past five years on the GNST is introduced, and a generalized three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Hoek–Brown (HB) criterion (NGHB criterion) is proposed for practical applications. This criterion can be degenerated into the existing three modified HB criteria and has a better prediction performance. Abstract:The strength theories of geotechnical materials can be classified as single shear strength theory, tri-shear strength theory and twin-shear strength theory. They are represented by the Mohr-Coulomb theory, Drucker-Prager criterion and the twin-shear theory respectively. Each strength theory has its own representative element model. The strength theory is established by analyzing the stresses that cause the model element to fail and by developing the mathematical relationship among the stresses on the model. Based on the characteristics of failure and strength of rocks under symmetry compression tests and true tri-axial compression tests, the authors introduce a new twin-shear model and associated strength theories for rock materials.

Abstract:According to the principle of probability and statistics,the mechanisms of concrete damage and the characteristic of three-parameter Weibull distribution are studies,and statistical model of concrete strength is established in this paper.In the base of the academic analyses and test,a statistic model of concrete strength,based the weakest chain theory,is put forward,and three-parameter Weibull distribution to describe its distributing rule is used to consequently study the concrete strength.Accordingly,the livability of the strength in the specified confidence can be got.

Abstract:An experimental investigation was carried out to generate the mechanical behavior of normal concrete cores with a strength range of 10-50 MPa, including the compressive strength, elastic modulus, strain at peak stress and stress-strain relationships. From several formulations for concrete in this study, it was observed that a conservative estimation of the elastic modulus and strain at peak stress can be obtained from the value of compressive strength. The accuracy of predictions of a number of analytical models available in the literature is discussed. This paper shows the development of a statistical damage mechanics model for concrete at uniaxial loading in compression to ultimate failure. This model is formulated by using Weibull's statistical theory of the strength of materials. The body of heterogeneous concrete material is simulated as a continuum comprising a large population of microscopic "weakestlink" elements. This model provides a good prediction of experimental results in this study. When compared other existing models, it gave better prediction. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
