There exists an essential difference between the upper and the lower box-counting dimension. In particular, the upper box-counting dimension plays an important role in the dimension theory.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. This paper investigates a special Cantor set with different upper and lower box dimensions, and discusses its Hausdorff dimension. In addition, we extend the set and generate a class of sets with different upper and lower box dimensions, reaching a sufficiently large interval within the range of the box dimension.

Abstract:Hausdorff dimension of level sets of generic continuous functions defined on fractals can give information about the "thickness/narrow cross-sections" "network" corresponding to a fractal set, $F$. This lead to the definition of the topological Hausdorff dimension of fractals. Finer information might be obtained by considering the Hausdorff dimension of level sets of generic $1$-Hölder-$\alpha$ functions, which has a stronger dependence on the geometry of the fractal, as displayed in our previous papers. In this paper, we extend our investigations to the lower and upper box-counting dimension as well: while the former yields results highly resembling the ones about Hausdorff dimension of level sets, the latter exhibits a different behaviour. Instead of "finding narrow-cross sections", results related to upper box-counting dimension try to "measure" how much level sets can spread out on the fractal, how widely the generic function can "oscillate" on it. Key differences are illustrated by giving estimates concerning the Sierpiński triangle.

Abstract:Two boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are comparable if one of them is a subset of a translation of the other one. The comparable box dimension of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $d$ such that $G$ can be represented as a touching graph of comparable axis-aligned boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that proper minor-closed classes have bounded comparable box dimensions and explore further properties of this notion.

Abstract:In this paper, using two special types of rise-dimensional operators based on existing fractal functions, we construct new fractal surfaces with any value of the Hausdorff and Box dimension between two and three. Further, we demonstrate that the lower and upper Box dimension of such fractal surfaces may be unequal to each other. This result could be useful to the research on creating various fractal surfaces with the required fractal dimensions in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new notion called the box-counting measure of a metric space. We show that for a doubling metric space, an Ahlfors regular measure is always a box-counting measure; consequently, if E is a self-similar set satisfying the open set condition, then the Hausdorff measure restricted to E is a box-counting measure. We show two classes of self-affine sets, the generalized Lalley-Gatzouras type self-affine sponges and Barański carpets, always admit box-counting measures; this also provides a very simple method to calculate the box-dimension of these fractals. Moreover, among others, we show that if two doubling metric spaces admit box-counting measures, then the multi-fractal spectra of the box-counting measures coincide provided the two spaces are Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E ⊂ R , which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. Abstract:Let $ K $ be a compact subset of the $d$-torus invariant under an expanding diagonal endomorphism with $ s $ distinct eigenvalues. Suppose the symbolic coding of $K$ satisfies weak specification. When $ s \leq 2 $, we prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (A) the Hausdorff and box dimensions of $ K $ coincide; (B) with respect to some gauge function, the Hausdorff measure of $ K $ is positive and finite; (C) the Hausdorff dimension of the measure of maximal entropy on $ K $ attains the Hausdorff dimension of $ K $. When $ s \geq 3 $, we find some examples in which (A) does not hold but (C) holds, which is a new phenomenon not appearing in the planar cases. Through a different probabilistic approach, we establish the equivalence of (A) and (B) for Bedford-McMullen sponges.

Abstract:We prove a packing exponent formula for the upper box-counting dimension of attractors of certain projective iterated function systems. This partially affirms a conjecture of De Leo, and gives that the box-counting dimension of the Rauzy gasket $\mathcal R$, $\operatorname{dim}_B(\mathcal R)$, exists and satisfies $\operatorname{dim}_B(\mathcal R) = \operatorname{dim}_H(\mathcal R) \in [1.6196,1.7415].$

Abstract:Based on a function represented by the Cantor series and a binary fraction of real numbers, a class of rough surfaces is constructed in this paper. The method used completely differs from those previously developed. In addition, the fractal dimensions, as an indicator of the roughness of such surfaces, are also investigated. The calculating formulas for the box-counting and packing dimensions are derived, and the upper and lower bounds of the Hausdorff dimension are estimated.

Abstract: We consider CFT's arising from branes probing singularities of internal manifolds. We focus on holographic models with internal space including arbtirary Sasaki-Einstein manifolds coming from CY as well as arbitrary sphere quotients. In all these cases we show that there is a universal upper bound (depending only on the spacetime dimension) for the conformal dimension of the first non-trivial spin 2 operator in the dual CFT and a minimal diameter (in AdS units) for the internal space of the holographic dual and conjecture it holds for all CFT's.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the connection between a class of real number sequences and local fractal functions in terms of fractal dimensions. Under certain conditions, we show that the Box dimension of the graph of a local fractal function with a single unbounded variation point is equal to that of its zero points set plus one. Several concrete examples of such functions whose Box dimension can take any numbers belonging to [1,2] have also been given. This work may provide new approaches to the construction of various local fractal functions with the required Box dimension in the future.

Abstract:We show that the Feng-Xiong lower bound of $1/2$ for the box dimension of $\alpha\beta$-sets is tight. We also study how much of an $\alpha\beta$-orbit ``carries the dimension'': deleting an arbitararily small positive density set of times can cause the box dimension to drop to zero, but the Assouad dimension cannot drop below $1/4$.

Abstract:We calculate the Assouad and lower dimensions of graph-directed Bedford-McMullen carpets, which reflect the extreme local scaling laws of the sets, in contrasting with known results on Hausdorff and box dimensions. We also investigate the relationship between distinct dimensions. In particular, we identify an equivalent condition when the box and Assouad dimension coincide, and show that under this condition, the Hausdorff dimension attains the same value.

Abstract:We introduce a family of dimensions, which we call the $\Phi$-intermediate dimensions, that lie between the Hausdorff and box dimensions and generalise the intermediate dimensions introduced by Falconer, Fraser and Kempton. This is done by restricting the relative sizes of the covering sets in a way that allows for greater refinement than in the definition of the intermediate dimensions. We also extend the theory from Euclidean space to a wider class of metric spaces. We prove that these dimensions can be used to 'recover the interpolation' between the Hausdorff and box dimensions of compact subsets for which the intermediate dimensions are discontinuous at $\theta=0$, thus providing finer geometric information about such sets. We prove continuity-like results involving the Assouad and lower dimensions, which give a sharp general lower bound for the intermediate dimensions that is positive for all $\theta \in (0,1]$ for sets with positive box dimension. We also prove Hölder distortion estimates, a mass distribution principle, and a Frostman type lemma, which we use to study dimensions of product sets.

Abstract:Two-dimensional quantum gravity, defined either via scaling limits of random discrete surfaces or via Liouville quantum gravity, is known to possess a geometry that is genuinely fractal with a Hausdorff dimension equal to 4. Coupling gravity to a statistical system at criticality changes the fractal properties of the geometry in a way that depends on the central charge of the critical system. Establishing the dependence of the Hausdorff dimension on this central charge <i>c</i> has been an important open problem in physics and mathematics in the past decades. All simulation data produced thus far has supported a formula put forward by Watabiki in the nineties. However, recent rigorous bounds on the Hausdorff dimension in Liouville quantum gravity show that Watabiki's formula cannot be correct when <i>c</i> approaches . Based on simulations of discrete surfaces encoded by random planar maps and a numerical implementation of Liouville quantum gravity, we obtain new finite-size scaling estimates of the Hausdorff dimension that are in clear contradiction with Watabiki's formula for all simulated values of . Instead, the most reliable data in the range is in very good agreement with an alternative formula that was recently suggested by Ding and Gwynne. The estimates for display a negative deviation from the latter formula, but the scaling is seen to be less accurate in this regime.
