Abstract:The recent application of Raman spectroscopy in solid-phase organic synthesis is reviewed. Two Raman spectra techniques of NIR-FT-Raman spectroscopy and confocal Raman microscopy are introduced respectively. NIR-FT-Raman spectroscopy can be used for the characterization of solid-supported reagents and catalysts, for monitoring the solid-phase reactions, and especially for monitoring the solid-phase reactions on inorganic supports since the interference of fluorescence emission background can be removed by this technique. Confocal Raman microscopy is used to study the distribution of reactive sites within a resin bead and characterize the structure of grafted supports. used for solid-phase synthesis taking the advantage of its high spatial resolution.

Abstract:This paper reviews the studies of using FTIR to investigate the components of aerosols produced in smog chamber experiments and collected in atmosphere. The fact that aerosols are mixture of small amount of countless individual compounds makes the analysis of aerosol constituents very challenging. Although a number of advanced instruments have been applied to the chemical characterization of aerosol components, the majority of aerosol components, particularly the organics, remain unknown. Being supplemental to the traditional quantitative instruments, FTIR has been recently used either individually or combining with other analytical instruments to characterize the components of aerosol particles. This paper aims to show how FTIR is applied to analysis of organic aerosols in current literature and to summarize the FTIR characteristic peak frequencies that are widely seen in the FTIR measurement of organic aerosols. It will be greatly helpful to researchers whose studies are focused on the analysis of aerosol components.

Abstract:Introduction: Various pharmaceutical preparations are widely used for clinical treatment. Elucidation of the mechanisms of drug release and evaluation of drug efficacy in biological samples are important in drug design and drug quality control.Areas covered: This review classifies recent applications of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in the field of medicine to comprehend drug release and diffusion. Drug release is affected by many factors of preparations, such as drug delivery system and microstructure polymorphism. The applications of FTIR imaging and nano-FTIR technique in biological samples lay a foundation for studying drug mechanism in vivo.Expert opinion: FTIR spectroscopy meets the research needs on preparations to understand the processes and mechanisms underlying drug release. The combination of attenuated total reflectance-FTIR imaging and nano-FTIR accompanied by chemometrics is a potent tool to overcome the deficiency of conventional infrared detection. FTIR shows an enormous potential in drug characterization, drug quality control, and bio-sample detection.

Abstract:The up-to-date applications of solid surface fluorimetry in pharmaceutical analysis were reviewed. It includes (1) the direct solid surface fluorimetric detection protocol, (2) the hyphenation of solid surface fluorimetry with solid phase extraction preconcentration and (3) the combination of solid surface fluorimetry with flow/sequential injection analysis and surface renewal of the solid substrate. In addition, the future perspectives of solid surface fluorimetry in pharmaceutical analysis were discussed.

Abstract:When molecules absorb infrared radiation (IR), their vibrational mode‐‐‐stretching and bending of the electric dipole‐‐‐changes to an excited state. Functional groups in organic molecules absorb IR related to their characteristic vibrational modes. A Fourier‐Transform Infrared Absorption (FTIR) analyzer measures the absorbed IR to identify molecular composition of surfaces, structural and geometric isomers, orientation in polymers and solutions, and quantify impurities. We describe the power of FTIR instruments and their basic operating principles, including the main experimental setups available: transmission, diffuse reflectance (DRIFTS), Reflection Adsorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIRS), and attenuated total reflection (ATR), including the recent advances related to time‐resolved and operando applications. In catalytic studies, FTIR spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility over the last several decades to understand reaction mechanisms, measure gas phase composition, and identify active sites. Over 3000 article include catalysis and FTIR as keywords but 50000 articles per year mention IR. We generated a bibliometric map of keywords in articles that WoS indexed in 2016 and 2017. The map identified four broad clusters of research in related to or applying FTIR: nano‐composites, composites, and mechanical properties; nano‐particles, degradation, graphene oxide, and photo‐catalysis; adsorption, aqueous solutions, and waste water; and, drug delivery, silver and gold nano‐particles, green synthesis, and antibacterial activity. Together with a synopsis of the principals of IR spectroscopy and a review of the applications, we discuss uncertainties and limitations of the technique.This article is protected by copyright. A great many of organic reactions can be carried out in higher yields, shorter time or milder conditions under low frequency unltrasonic irradiatioin. It can even set off some reactions which can not be carried out under traditional conditions. The representative references published in recent thirty years have been reviewed.

Abstract:Synchrotron radiation based Fourier-transform infrared (S-FTIR) microspectroscopy is a new-developed technique, which combines the advantages of FTIR spectroscopy and synchrotron light source. FTIR spectroscopy is an easy, fast, and well-established analytical method to be wildly used in many fields, especially has the ability to characterize different samples (for instance, organic and inorganic materials, or crystalline and amorphous materials) in the same time. On the other hand, the ultra brightness and high spatial resolution of synchrotron light source ensure S-FTIR microspectroscopy is capable of analyzing small samples or small sample areas that conventional FTIR cannot do. After 20 years of development, S-FTIR has been widely used in a variety of analytical chemistry field and obtained an abundant research results. In our previous review, we discussed the application of S-FTIR microspectroscopy in biomedical field, so here we review recent applications of S-FTIR microspectroscopy in some other analytical chemistry areas, including cultural heritage and archaeology, earth and space science, and chemistry and polymer science. It is no doubt that S-FTIR microspectroscopy has become a more and more useful tool to determine the structure of small samples or small sample areas. In the future, a multibeam synchrotron imaging system, which combine a multibeam synchrotron source with focal plane array (FPA) detectors, with a greatly improved spatial resolution by reducing the diffraction limited spot size an order of magnitude to 0.54 mu m x 0.54 mu m, may further show the merit of S-FTIR technique on the characterization of small samples or small sample areas in Various research fields.

Abstract:Advances in on-chip spectroscopy are resulting in improved chemical and biological sensing applications. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) technology, a leading spectroscopy system, exhibits an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio over other spectroscopy designs by utilizing Fellgett’s advantage. To achieve this, FTIR spectrometers have a variable arm path length and use modulation of the index of refraction to enable spectral decomposition of light from the interferogram. However, this approach often requires discrete optical elements resulting in a costly and bulky design. In addition, it results in increased system complexity from mechanical moving parts and reduced system robustness. Many on-chip spectrometers use spectrum splitting, a much less effective spectrometry system, due to size and power constraints. These designs have a reduced signal-to-noise ratio because they lack the Fellgett advantage present in FTIR spectrometers.

Abstract:Bisphenol F (BPF) and its derivatives have a wide range of applications in plastic, coating and other important chemical industries. However, the parallel-consecutive reaction feature makes the synthesis of BPF very complicated and difficult to control. Precise control of the process is the key to a safer and more efficient industrial production. Herein, an in situ monitoring technology of BPF synthesis based on spectroscopy (attenuated total reflection infrared, Raman) was established for the first time. Using quantitative univariate models, the mechanism and reaction kinetics were studied in depth. Moreover, a better process route with a relatively low phenol/formaldehyde ratio was optimized with the in situ monitoring technology established, which could be used for much more sustainable scaled-up production. The present work could lead to application of in situ spectroscopic technologies in chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is an important tool for material characterization. However, due to the diffraction limit, conventional infrared spectroscopy cannot be applied to nanoscale material. In the past decade, FTIR nano-spectroscopy (nano-FTIR), combining scanning near-field optical microscopy and FTIR, has made significant progress. It provides scientists a powerful tool to study polymers, 2D-materials, semiconductor devices, and biomaterials at the nanoscale. In this review, we introduce the development and working mechanism of nano-FTIR, and summarize some typical applications in different research fields. The purpose of this review is to allow readers to understand the basic principles of nano-FTIR, its current development status, and the application potential of this technology. Finally, we briefly summarize current challenges faced by this technology and present some research directions that deserve attention in the future.

Application Of Single Bead Ftir In The Optimization Of Solid-Phase Combinatorial And Parallel Syntheses

Abstract:Transfer of reaction conditions from solution to solid-phase is critical for combinatorial [1,2] and parallel solid-phase synthesis (SPS) [3]. This transfer and the further optimization of reaction conditions are not trivial undertakings. The lack of analytical methods for onsupport qualitative and quantitative analysis further accentuates the problem. To facilitate reaction optimization, the single bead FTIR method has been developed [4-6]. This method generates IR spectra with superior quality and provides an effective analytical tool. Reactions selected to synthesize a combinatorial library are usually well optimized in solution so that the corresponding SPS reactions would usually lead to expected products. Consequently, the analytical task is only to confirm the presence of the desired products. Single bead FTIR is particularly suited for this task because: (1) IR easily monitors functional group transformation; (2) building blocks used in synthesis can be selected to contain an IR detectable group; (3) direct monitoring of compounds on solidphase is generally quicker and more convenient than methods requiring cleavage and it is particularly advantageous when synthetic intermediates are unstable to the necessary cleavage conditions; (4) a single bead was shown representative of the whole population of beads [4]; and (5) IR spectra taken from different beads (different sizes or at different reaction times) can be compared using a polystyrene band as internal reference. Therefore, it is not necessary to examine the same bead for reaction kinetics study in the course of a synthesis.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy is a useful and powerful technique that can provide rich information on proteins,lipids,nucleic acids and carbohydrates in biological systems.Especially,the high-resolution synchrotron Fourier-transform infrared(SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy and imaging technique can be employed as an excellent tool for convenient,fast,non-invasive,and real-time monitoring of varied complicated processes occuring in a biological system.In this review,the authors discuss the recent progress on the application of FT-IR spectroscopy in the study of biological effects on microorganisms induced by ionizing radiation,and also give an outlook for the future FT-IR spectroscopy research in this field.

Abstract:Electrochemical in situ microscope IR reflection spectroscopy and step-scan time-resolved FTIR reflection spectroscopy were established by using an IR-plan advantage microscope and a Nexus 870 FTIR instrument, and a home-made signal synchronizer that harmonizes electrode polarization potential and step-scan spectral data collection sequence. These new techniques have been applied in studies of particular IR properties of 2-dimensional nanomaterials. By applying a treatment of fast potential cycling with different time (tau), a set of nanostructured Pt microelectrodes were prepared. CO adsorption was employed as a probe reaction together with in situ developed microscope FTIR spectroscopy. The results illustrated the variation of abnormal IR features with the nanostructure and the thickness (i.e., the size) of film formed on Pt microelectrode, i.e., following the increase of tau in fast potential cycling treatment, the direction of CO band was turned from absorption to antiabsorption direction, and the intensity and the width of CO band were increased. By taking the advantage of the abnormal infrared effects of nanostructured Pt microelectrode, the sensitivity of in situ IR reflection spectroscopy has been significantly improved, and spectra of time-resolution as fast as 50 micros have been recorded at solid/liquid interfaces. The current studies demonstrated not only the success of development of new techniques of in situ IR spectroscopy, but also the exploitation of the established techniques in studies of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Synchrotron infrared light source, characterized with broadband, high brightness and resolution is widely used in biomedical fields. With the progress in imaging technique of FTIR microscopy, the scientists can detect biochemical changes in vivo with synchrotron FTIR in subcellular scale and preserve the cells in life feature. By analyzing the protein, nucleic acid and phospholipid components in animal, botanic tissues and cells qualitatively and quantitatively, the pathological changes of bone, the neurodegeneration, the progress of cancer cells and the nutrition in plants can be well understood. Furthermore, the controlled release of drugs and other biochemical processes can also be monitored by synchrotron FTIR. It is worth noting that the intermolecular vibrations of biomolecular assemblies lie in the long wavelength, the so-called far infrared region, where synchrotron FTIR can provide higher signal-to-noise ratio spectra compared with conventional FTIR with global light source.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) imaging and Raman chemical imaging have advantages over conventional methods to investigate heterogeneous plant structures in providing quantitative and qualitative analyses with the spatial distribution of the components. Combined with multivariate statistical analysis, they have been proven to be powerful nondestructive analytical tools in applications in plant materials. This review aims to present a general perspective about IR imaging and Raman chemical imaging in plant materials. The first section will introduce a variety of characteristics with the underlying principles, respectively. And the second section will review selected application in the latest literature, such as discrimination of different plant samples, investigation of the microstructures of leaf, identification of the cell wall components, and study of the microstructure and quality of cereal grains. And the last section is conclusion.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has been widely used as a fast and accurate tool for detecting and analyzing organic materials for several decades since it was initially introduced to study the asphalt material. Since FTIR is able to distinguish asphalt at the molecular level, thus providing researchers an opportunity to explore the asphalt chemical characteristics. This review focused on evaluating the application of FTIR technologies in exploring the characteristics of asphalt material. The basic principle of FTIR and its test methods were briefly introduced. In addition, the main applications of the FTIR on asphalt were divided into three parts, including materials recognition, processing recognition and aging recognition in this review. The purpose of this review article is to provide the reference and guidance for researchers who intend to use FTIR to discover the aging characteristics and mechanism of the modified asphalt as well as some other special applications.

Abstract:This review provides some background to infrared spectroscopy including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It is not meant to be complete or exhaustive but to provide the reader with sufficient background for selected applications in pharmaceutical analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a fast and nondestructive analytical method. Associated with chemometrics, it can become a powerful tool for the pharmaceutical industry. Indeed, it is suitable for analysis of solid, liquid, and biotechnological pharmaceutical forms. This review focuses on pharmaceutical FTIR applications used for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Moreover, it can be implemented during pharmaceutical development, in production for process monitoring, and in quality control laboratories.
