Abstract:Li(3)V(2-x)Mnx(()PO(4))(3)/C (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1) cathode materials have been prepared via a sol-gel method with NH4H2PO4, LiOH center dot H2O, NH4VO3, MnSO4 center dot H2O and citric acid as raw materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that Li3V2-xMnx(PO4)(3)/C (0 <= x <=.0.1) have the same monoclinic structure as the undoped one. The appropriate Mn-doping content does not destroy the lattice structure of Li3V2(PO4)(3)/C, but slightly enlarge the unit cell volume, providing more space for Li + ions intercalation/deintercalation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images display that Mn2+ substitution has no effects on the particles size and morphology of Li3V2(PO4)(3). As the cathode material for lithium batteries, the optimal doping content of Mn is that x = 0.075 in Li3V2Mnx(PO4)(3)/C to achieve high discharge capacity and good cyclic stability in the voltage of 3.0-4.8 V. At a discharge rate of 0.5 C, the initial discharge capacity of Li3V1.925Mn0.075(PO4)(3)/C is 166.9 mAh/g, and the capacity fading is only 5.65% after 50 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the appropriate Mn2+- substitution which will be favorable for enhancing the structural stability of Li3V2(PO4)(3) and improving the mobility of Li+ ions.
