Abstract:The reaction OH + SO -> H + SO2 plays an important role in the combustion of sulfur-containing fuels and the environment. Its reaction profile resembles that of OH + CO -> H + CO2, which presents a prototypical reaction with the formation of deep complexes. In this work, a new potential energy surface (PES) for the OH + SO -> H + SO2 reaction is developed based on ca. 39 200 data points calculated at the level of the explicitly correlated unrestricted coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations with the augmented correlation-consistent polarized triple zeta basis set (CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ). The PES is invariant with respect to the permutation of the two identical oxygen atoms, which is guaranteed by the permutation-invariant polynomials as the input layer of the neural network. Using this PES, the quasiclassical trajectory method is employed to study the collision energy transfer between H and SO2 at the experimental translational energy of 59 kcal mol(-1). The predicted large integral cross sections for trajectories producing SO2 with high vibrational energy and populations of the SO2 vibrational energy are in good agreement with the recent experimental and theoretical results. Detailed analysis shows that there are two possible mechanisms, a direct mechanism (without passing through HOSO or the HSO2 well) and an indirect one (passing through one or both wells). The latter dominates in producing SO2 with high vibrational energy.
A Permutationally Invariant Full-Dimensional Ab Initio Potential Energy Surface for the Abstraction and Exchange Channels of the H + CH4 System.

Abstract:We report a permutationally invariant global potential energy surface (PES) for the H + CH4 system based on ∼63,000 data points calculated at a high ab initio level (UCCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ) using the recently proposed permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method. The small fitting error (5.1 meV) indicates a faithful representation of the ab initio points over a large configuration space. The rate coefficients calculated on the PES using tunneling corrected transition-state theory and quasi-classical trajectory are found to agree well with the available experimental and previous quantum dynamical results. The calculated total reaction probabilities (Jtot = 0) including the abstraction and exchange channels using the new potential by a reduced dimensional quantum dynamic method are essentially the same as those on the Xu-Chen-Zhang PES [Chin. J. Chem. Phys. 27, 373 (2014)].

Abstract:In addition to its vital significance in combustion and atmospheric chemistry, the reaction between H' and HO2 on the ground triplet state represents a prototype with multiple product channels, including H2 + O2, OH + OH, O + H2O, and H + H'O2. In this work, a full-dimensional accurate potential energy surface (PES) for the title reaction was developed to provide reliable descriptions for all dynamically relevant regions. Using this PES, we adopted the quasi-classical trajectory approach to study the corresponding reaction dynamics, including the reactivity of each product channel and the associated product branching ratio, the product energy distributions, product angular distributions, and associated microscopic mechanisms. For representing distributions of the product energies, such as product translational energy as well as product rotational and vibrational energies, both the traditional histogram and the kernel density estimation (KDE) methods were used and compared. It seems that the features of the resulting distributions in this work are very similar to each other among different methods. The KDE method is suggested for statistics, particularly for those populations with small oscillations in the histogram plot.

Abstract:The H + CH3OH reaction, which plays an important role in combustion and the interstellar medium, presents a prototypical system with multi channels and tight transition states. However, no globally reliable potential energy surface (PES) has been available to date. Here we develop global analytical PESs for this system using the permutation-invariant polynomial neural network (PIP-NN) and the high-dimensional neural network (HD-NN) methods based on a large number of data points calculated at the level of the explicitly correlated unrestricted coupled cluster single, double, and perturbative triple level with the augmented correlation corrected valence triple-zeta basis set (UCCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ). We demonstrate that both machine learning PESs are able to accurately describe all dynamically relevant reaction channels. At a collision energy of 20 kcal/mol, quasi-classical trajectory calculations reveal that the dominant channel is the hydrogen abstraction from the methyl site, yielding H-2 + CH2OH. The reaction of this major channel takes place mainly via the direct rebound mechanism. Both the vibrational and rotational states of the H-2 product are relatively cold, and large portions of the available energy are converted into the product translational motion.

Abstract:The reaction HO + SO -> H + SO2 (R-t) and its reverse (R-t) play an important role in environment and the combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. However, their kinetics is of high uncertainty as its reaction profile is complicated with multiple deep complexes and channels. In this work, the kinetics and mechanisms of R-t and R-t are studied comprehensively based on a newly developed full-dimensional accurate potential energy surface (PES) with the aid of machine learning. This highly accurate PES is interfaced with the software Gaussian. Then reliable information, including the energy, structures, and vibrational frequencies of the stationary points, as well as the minimum energy path and variational analysis can be efficiently determined. The variational transition state theory (VTST) and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory are employed to obtain the rate coefficients of each elementary reaction. The temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficients of R-t are derived by the RRKM-based master equation with hindered rotor and free rotor model considered. In addition, the effect of isotope substitution for the hydrogen is investigated on the reaction kinetics. Meanwhile, the quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculation is performed on the PES-2020 to obtain the temperature-dependent reaction kinetics.

Abstract:For the H + H2S system, ∼34 000 data points are sampled over a large configuration space including both abstraction and exchange channels, and calculated at the level of explicitly correlated unrestricted coupled cluster method with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples excitations with the augmented correlation-consistent polarized triple zeta basis set (UCCSD(T)-F12a/aug-cc-pVTZ). The data set was fit using the newly proposed permutation invariant polynomial-neural network (PIP-NN) method with three different vectors as the input: two redundant sets of PIPs, one with the maximum order four (PES-I) and one with the maximum order three (PES-II), and nine non-redundant PIPs (PES-III). All these PESs show small fitting errors and essentially the same performance in representing the title system. Various kinetics and dynamical properties are calculated using the tunneling corrected transition state theory and quasi-classical trajectory, and compared with available experimental results. At a collision energy of 10 kcal/mol, both the H2 and SH products are found to be internally cold, with ∼20% of H2 at its first vibrational excited state, while SH is essentially a spectator. The angular distributions of the products are mainly in backward with considerable contributions from sideway direction. In addition, analytical partial derivatives of any PIP-NN PES with respect to the coordinates of atoms are derived by making use of the monomial symmetrization algorithm [Z. Xie and J. M. Bowman, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 6, 26-34 (2010)]. It can not only accelerate the evaluation of the derivatives, but also improve the energy convergence significantly.

The small fitting error (∼5 meV) indicates a faithful representation of the potential energy surface over a large configuration space. Full-dimensional quantum and quasi-classical trajectory studies of the title reaction were performed on this potential energy surface. While the results suggest that the differences between this and an earlier neural network fits are small, discrepancies with state-to-state experimental data remain significant.

Abstract:For the symmetric reaction OH + H2O → H2O + OH, ∼48 000 data points are sampled and calculated at the level of the explicitly correlated unrestricted coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations with the augmented correlation-consistent polarized triple zeta basis set (CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ). The data set is then employed to fit the full dimensional accurate potential energy surface (PES) by using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network (PIP-NN) method, resulting in a total root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.12 kcal mol-1. The quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) method is used to study its reaction dynamics. It has been found that the integral cross section (ICS) is increased gradually as a function of the collision energy ranging from 8 to 30 kcal mol-1 with a threshold around 8 kcal mol-1. At a collision energy of 20 kcal mol-1, detailed dynamics show that the OH product is a spectator and the differential cross section (DCS) is dominated by backward scattering with considerable contributions from sideway scattering, consistent with the direct rebound and stripping mechanisms.
Quantum Dynamics on New Potential Energy Surfaces for the H2+OH→H2O+H Reaction

Abstract:We report dynamics on two interpolated global potential energy surfaces (PES) for the H2+OH reaction. The first PES is based on both QCISD(T)/6-311++G(3df,2pd) and MRCI/aug-cc-pVTZ ab initio calculations. In the second version, the energies at the interpolation data points are improved to the UCCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level. Fully converged integral cross sections were calculated on these two PESs for the title reaction for the ground rovibrational and two rotationally excited initial states. Good agreement between theory and experiment for rate coefficients for temperatures up to 1050 K are only achieved on the second PES.

Abstract:The interaction between H2O and CO has been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical investigations for a long time due to their important roles in various environments, such as the atmosphere, combustion of hydrocarbons, and the interstellar medium. In this work, the first full-dimensional accurate potential energy surface (PES) was developed for the CO + H2O system based on ca. 102 000 points calculated at the level of an explicitly correlated coupled-cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations with the augmented correlation-consistent polarized triple zeta basis set (CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ) using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network (PIP-NN) method. The geometries, energies, and frequencies of the two complex wells, CO-H2O and OC-H2O, and one transition state connecting them, as well as some interconversions between different conformers, are accurately reproduced by the PES, thanks to the small fitting error of only 1.08 meV. With full-dimensional degrees of freedom considered in the PES, we found that there exist strong dependences of the CO and OH bond lengths on the OC-H2O and CO-H2O interaction energies, which is not possible in reduced dimensional PESs. Finally, classical dynamics was carried out to study the energy transfer between H2O and CO with different initial vibrational energies in H2O and different vibrational states in CO.
Highly Accurately Fitted Potential Energy Surfaces for Polyatomic Reactive Systems

Abstract:Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in theoretical and experimental research in the field of chemical reaction dynamics, moving from triatomic reactions to larger polyatomic reactions. This has challenged the theoretical and computational approaches to polyatomic reaction dynamics in two major areas: the potential energy surface and the dynamics. Highly accurate potential energy surfaces are essential for achieving accurate dynamical information in quantum dynamics calculations. The increased number of degrees of freedom in larger systems poses a significant challenge to the accurate construction of potential energy surfaces. Recently, there has been substantial progress in the development of potential energy surfaces for polyatomic reactive systems. In this article, we review the recent developments made by our group in constructing highly accurately fitted potential energy surfaces for polyatomic reactive systems, based on a neural network approach. A key advantage of the neural network approach is its more faithful representation of the ab initio points. We recently proposed a systematic procedure, based on neural network fitting, for the construction of accurate potential energy surfaces with very small root mean square errors. Based on the neural network approach, we successfully developed potential energy surfaces for polyatomic reactions in the gas phase, including the reactive systems OH3, HOCO, and CH5, and the dissociation of gas-phase molecules on metal surfaces, such as H2O on the Cu(111) surface. These potential energy surfaces were fitted to an unprecedented level of accuracy, representing the most accurate potential energy surfaces calculated for these systems, and were rigorously tested using quantum dynamics calculations. The quantum dynamics calculations based on these potential energy surfaces produce accurate results, which are in good agreement with experiments. We have also proposed a new method for developing permutationally invariant potential energy surfaces, named fundamental-invariant neural networks. Mathematically, fundamental invariants are used to finitely generate the permutation-invariant polynomial ring; thus, fundamental-invariant neural networks can approximate any function to arbitrary accuracy. The use of fundamental invariants minimizes the size of the input permutation-invariant polynomials, which reduces the evaluation time for potential energy calculations, especially for polyatomic systems. Potential energy surfaces for OH3 and CH4 were constructed using fundamental-invariant neural networks, with their accuracies confirmed by full-dimensional quantum dynamics and bound-state calculations. These developments in the construction of highly accurate potential energy surfaces are expected to extend the theoretical study of reaction dynamics to larger and more complex systems.

Abstract:We report an accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) of the anion-molecule system OH3-. The PES was constructed by fitting 55 406 ab inito energies from the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory with the fundamental invariant neural network (FI-NN) approach, resulting in an extremely small fitting error of 0.52 meV. Extensive quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) simulations were carried out on the PES to investigate the proton transfer dynamics (OH- + D2 → D- + HOD). The product D- translational energy distribution and angular distribution were calculated and compared with previous experimental measurements, in which reasonably good agreement has been achieved. The angular distribution at a high collision energy exhibits an exclusively forward scattering peak, indicating the direct stripping mechanism at high energies. With the decrease of the collision energy, the reaction shows a predominantly forward scattering feature, with very small sideways and backward scattering amplitudes, revealing combined mechanisms from direct abstraction with a short reaction time and a complex-forming process with a long reaction time.

A Global Potential Energy Surface for the H2 + OH ↔ H2O + H Reaction Using Neural Networks

Abstract:A global potential energy surface for the H2 + OH ↔ H2O + H reaction has been constructed using the neural networks method based on ∼17 000 ab initio energies calculated at UCCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ level of theory. Time-dependent wave packet calculations showed that the new potential energy surface is very well converged with respect to the number of ab initio data points, as well as to the fitting process. Various tests revealed that the new surface is considerably more smooth and accurate than the existing YZCL2 and XXZ surfaces, representing the best available potential energy surface for the benchmark four-atom system. Equally importantly, the number of ab initio energies required to obtain the well converged potential energy surface is rather limited, indicating the neural network fitting is a powerful method to construct accurate potential energy surfaces for polyatomic reactions.
Fundamental Invariant Neural Network (FI-NN) Potential Energy Surface for the OH + CH3OH Reaction with Analytical Forces

Abstract:The hydrogen abstraction reaction of OH + CH3OH plays a great role in combustion and atmospheric and interstellar chemistry and has been extensively studied theoretically and experimentally. Theoretically, the numerical gradients with respect to the Cartesian coordinates of atoms in molecular simulations on our recent potential energy surface (PES) for the title reaction trained using the permutationally invariant polynomial neural network (PIP-NN) approach hinder the extensive calculation because of the unaffordable computation cost. To address this issue, we in this work report a new full-dimensional accurate analytical PES for the title reaction using the fundamental invariant neural network (FI-NN) approach based on 140,192 points of the quality UCCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ. Besides, the spin-orbit (SO) corrections of OH in the entrance channel were determined at the level of complete active space self-consistent field with the AVTZ basis set. As a compromise between computational cost and efficiency, the Δ-machine learning approach was employed to construct the SO-corrected PES. Based on this new FI-NN PES with analytical forces, thermal rate coefficients and various dynamic properties, including the integral cross sections, the differential cross sections, and the product energy partitioning, were determined by running a total of 5.5 million trajectories. The use of analytical gradients of the FI-NN PES accelerated simulations and about 99% of computation cost was saved, compared to that for the PIP-NN PES with numerical gradients. Such a significant acceleration is achieved mainly by replacing PIPs with FIs.
