Abstract:The application of high pressure can fundamentally modify the crystalline and electronic structures of elements as well as their chemical reactivity, which could lead to the formation of novel materials. Here, we explore the reactivity of lithium with sodium under high pressure, using a swarm structure searching techniques combined with first-principles calculations, which identify a thermodynamically stable Li–Na compound adopting an orthorhombic oP8 phase at pressure above 355 GPa. The formation of Li–Na may be a consequence of strong concentration of electrons transfering from the lithium and the sodium atoms into the interstitial sites, which also leads to open a relatively wide band gap for Li NaoP8. This is substantially different from atoms sharing or exchanging electrons in common compounds and alloys. In addition, lattice-dynamic calculations indicate that Li Na-oP8 remains dynamically stable when pressure decompresses down to 70 GPa.

Abstract:We performed first-principles calculations for the pressure-induced martensitic phase transition from the ground state ferromagnetic bcc phase to a nonmagnetic hcp phase in Fe under hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pressure based on density-functional theory, employing the pseudopotentional and plane-wave method. The calculated results show that the magnetic moment of bcc iron under non-hydrostatic conditions decreases faster than that under hydrostatic conditions as the stress increases from 0 GPa to 18 GPa. Theoretical calculations prove that non-hydrostatic conditions can significantly reduce the bcc phase to hcp phase transition pressure. The critical stress for bcc-to-hcp transformation decreases linearly as the non-hydrostatic effect increases. The physical origins of the influence of non-hydrostatic pressure on the transition pressure are discussed.

Abstract:The spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation within the plane-wave pseudopotential density functional theory is employed to investigate the magnetism and phase transition of iron under pressure. It is found that iron has a ferromagnetic body-centered-cubic (bcc) ground state, while at high pressure (such as at the Earth's lower mantle and core pressure), the most stable phase is the nonmagnetic hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase. For the face-centered-cubic (fcc) iron, we find that there is an intermediate-spin state (IS) during the transformation from the high-spin state (HS) to the low-spin (LS) state under pressure. The transition pressures of the HS -> IS and the IS -> LS are about 15 GPa and 50 GPa, respectively. The magnetism can affect the properties of iron up to 72.9 GPa. From the enthalpy difference between every two phases, we find the phase transition pressures of FM-bcc -> FM-hcp, FM-bcc -> NM-hcp and NM-bcc -> NM-hcp are 14.4 GPa, 29.5 GPa and 42.7 GPa, respectively.
Compression and Phase Diagram of Lithium Hydrides at Elevated Pressures and Temperatures by First-Principles Calculation

Abstract:High pressure and high temperature properties of AB (A = Li-6, Li-7; B = H, D, T) are comprehensively investigated with first-principles methods. It is found that H-sublattice features in the low-pressure electronic structure near the Fermi level of LiH are shifted to that dominated by the Li+ sublattice under compression. The lattice dynamics are studied in quasi-harmonic approximation, from which the phonon contribution to the free energy and the isotopic effects are accurately modelled with the aid of a parameterized double-Debye model. The equation of state (EOS) obtained matches perfectly with available static experimental data. The calculated principal Hugoniot is also in accordance with that derived from shock wave experiments. Using the calculated principal Hugoniot and the previous theoretical melting curve, we predict a shock melting point at 56 GPa and 1923 K. In order to establish the phase diagram for LiH, the phase boundaries between the B1 and B2 solid phases are explored. The B1-B2-liquid triple point is determined at about 241 GPa and 2413 K. The remarkable shift in the phase boundaries with isotopic effect and temperature reveal the significant role played by lattice vibrations. Furthermore, the Hugoniot of the static-dynamic coupling compression is assessed. Our EOS suggests that a precompression of the sample to 50 GPa will allow the shock Hugoniot to pass through the triple point and enter the B2 solid phase. This transition leads to a discontinuity with 4.6% volume collapse-about four times greater than the same B1-B2 transition at zero temperature.

Predicted Complex Lithium Phases at Terapascal Pressures

Abstract:We investigate the pressure-temperature ($p$-$T$) phase diagram of elemental lithium (Li) up to multiterapascal (TPa) pressures using ab-initio random structure search (AIRSS) and density functional theory (DFT). At zero temperature, beyond the high-pressure $Fd\bar{3}m$ diamond structure predicted in previous studies, we find eleven solid-state phase transitions to structures of greatly varying complexity, in addition to two structures that we calculate will become stable with sufficient temperature. The full $p$-$T$ dependence of the phase boundaries are computed within the vibrational harmonic approximation, and the solid-liquid melting line is calculated using ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. Notably, between 39.1 TPa and 55.7 TPa, Li adopts an elaborate monoclinic structure with 46 atoms in the primitive unit cell, and between 71.9 TPa and $103$ TPa, an incommensurate host-guest phase of the Ba-IV type. We find that Li, hitherto predicted to be an electride at TPa pressures, abruptly loses its electride character above 16 TPa, reverting back to normal metallic behaviour with a corresponding rise in the Fermi-level electronic density of states (eDOS) and broadening of the electronic bands.

Predicted superconductivity and superionic state in the electride Li$_5$N under high pressure

Abstract:Recently, electrides have received increasing attention due to their multifunctional properties as superconducting, catalytic, insulating, and electrode materials, with potential to offer other performance and possess novel physical states. This work uncovers that Li$_5$N as an electride possess four novel physical states simultaneously: electride state, super-coordinated state, superconducting state, and superionic state. By obtaining high-pressure phase diagrams of the Li-N system at 150-350 GPa using a crystal structure search algorithm, we find that Li$_5$N can remain stable as P6/mmm structure and has a 14-fold super-coordination number, as verified by Bader charge and electron localization function analysis. Aditionally, we find that its superconducting transition temperature decreases continuously with increasing pressure, contrary to the behavior of most high-pressure superconducting materials. Its superconducting transition temperature reaches the highest among all known electride at 150 GPa (Tc = 48.97 K). Besides, Li$_5$N exhibits the superionic state at 3000 K, in which N atoms act like solid, while some Li atoms flow like liquid. The above results are further verified at a macroscopic level by using deep learning potential molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:Superconducting and superionic behaviors have physically intriguing dynamic properties of electrons and ions, respectively, both of which are conceptually important and have great potential for practical applications. Whether these two phenomena can appear in the same system is an interesting and important question. Here, using crystal structure predictions and first-principle calculations combined with machine learning, we identify several stable Li-Al compounds with electride behavior under high pressure, and we find that the electronic density of states of some of the compounds has characteristics of the two-dimensional electron gas. Among them, we estimate that Li6Al at 150 GPa has a superconducting transition temperature of around 29 K and enters a superionic state at a high temperature and wide pressure range. The diffusion in Li6Al is found to be affected by an electride and attributed to the atomic collective motion. Our results indicate that alkali metal alloys can be effective platforms to study the abundant physical properties and their manipulation with pressure and temperature. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.129.246403 © 2022 American Physical Society

Prediction of Stable Ground-State Lithium Polyhydrides under High Pressures

Abstract:Hydrogen-rich compounds are important for understanding the dissociation of dense molecular hydrogen, as well as searching for room temperature Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors. A recent high pressure experiment reported the successful synthesis of novel insulating lithium polyhydrides when above 130 GPa. However, the results are in sharp contrast to previous theoretical prediction by PBE functional that around this pressure range all lithium polyhydrides (LiHn (n = 2-8)) should be metallic. In order to address this discrepancy, we perform unbiased structure search with first principles calculation by including the van der Waals interaction that was ignored in previous prediction to predict the high pressure stable structures of LiHn (n = 2-11, 13) up to 200 GPa. We reproduce the previously predicted structures, and further find novel compositions that adopt more stable structures. The van der Waals functional (vdW-DF) significantly alters the relative stability of lithium polyhydrides, and predicts that the stable stoichiometries for the ground-state should be LiH2 and LiH9 at 130-170 GPa, and LiH2, LiH8 and LiH10 at 180-200 GPa. Accurate electronic structure calculation with GW approximation indicates that LiH, LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are insulative up to at least 208 GPa, and all other lithium polyhydrides are metallic. The calculated vibron frequencies of these insulating phases are also in accordance with the experimental infrared (IR) data. This reconciliation with the experimental observation suggests that LiH2, LiH7, and LiH9 are the possible candidates for lithium polyhydrides synthesized in that experiment. Our results reinstate the credibility of density functional theory in description H-rich compounds, and demonstrate the importance of considering van der Waals interaction in this class of materials.

Abstract:We study the stability of Li-O compounds as a function of pressure, with rich phase diagram, diverse properties, and fundamental chemical interest in mind. Using the ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX, we predict the stability of compounds LiO4, Li5O3, and Li6O under pressure. Unexpectedly, LiO2 will decompose to Li2O2 + LiO4 in the pressure range 6-18 GPa. LiO4, formed at the pressure of just 6 GPa, can be seen as epsilon-O-8 accepting two electrons from two Li atoms. This phase is superconducting, with T-c up to 12.2 K at 10 GPa. This is remarkable, because elemental oxygen becomes superconducting at much higher pressure (96 GPa) and has much lower T-c (<0.6 K), and suggests that chemical alloying with other elements has the potential of not only decreasing metallization pressure, but also of increasing T-c. Since epsilon-O-8 is called red oxygen, LiO4 can be identified as "lithium red-oxide", and is distinct from superoxide. Additionally, Li5O3 is stable at pressures above 70 GPa and can be represented as a hybrid structure 4Li(2)O center dot Li2O2, and electride suboxide Li6O is stable above 62 GPa.
As-Li electrides under high pressure: superconductivity, plastic, and superionic states

Abstract:Inorganic electrides are a new class of compounds catering to the interest of scientists due to the multiple usages exhibited by interstitial electrons in the lattice. However, the influence of the shape and distribution of interstitial electrons on physical properties and new forms of physical states are still unknown. In this work, crystal structure search algorithms are employed to explore the possibility of forming new electrides in the As-Li system, where interstitial electrons behave as 1D electron chains (1D electride) in Pmmm phase of AsLi$_7$ and transform into 0D electron clusters (0D electride) in P6/mmm phase at 80 GPa. The P6/mmm phase has relatively high superconductivity at 150 GPa (Tc=38.4K) than classical electrides, even at moderate pressure with Tc=16.6K. The novel superconducting properties are conjectured to be possibly due to three Van Hove singularities at the Fermi level. In addition, a Dirac cone in the band has been observed, expanding the sources of Dirac materials. The survival of AsLi$_7$ at room temperature is confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation at 300 K. At 1000 K, the As atoms in the system act like solid, while a portion of the Li atoms cycle around the As atoms, and another portion of the Li atoms flow freely like liquid, showing the novel physical phenomenon of the coexistence of the plastic and superionic states. This suggests that the superionic and plastic states cannot only be found in hydrides but also in the electride. Our results indicate that superconducting electride AsLi$_7$ with superionic and plastic states can exist in Earth's interior.

Abstract:The relatively low-pressure layered hexagonal Li3B2 (h-Li3B2) phase under 20GPa was identified on the basis of ab initio calculations. Inspired by the high-temperature superconductivity of metallic hydrogen, this study obtained a novel hexagonal Li2B2H (h-Li2B2H) structure by replacing Li-2 with H. Contrast to h-Li3B2, h-Li2B2H may be directly synthesized by -LiB and H-2 under pressure. The two phases exhibited electronic features similar to those in MgB2 and were expected to be good superconductors. Electron-phonon coupling calculations illustrated that the layered h-Li3B2 structure is superconducting at 2K with =0.39 under 20GPa. Moreover, h-Li2B2H was predicted to possess a large electron-phonon coupling parameter of approximately 0.81 and a resulting superconducting critical temperature about 28K at 20GPa. The introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure had strong vibrational energy due to its light atomic mass and could enhance the energy of sigma and bonds by bonding with Li. Thus, the introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure is important due to its enhanced electron-phonon coupling and superconducting property.
Pressure induced Lifshitz transition and anomalous crystal field splitting in AFeAs (A=Li/Na) Fe-based superconducting compounds: A first principles study

Abstract:The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the electronic structures of iron pnictide superconducting compounds LiFeAs and NaFeAs through density functional theory based first principles studies are presented, using the predicted crystal structures at very high pressure by Zhang et al. [1]. The orbital selective pressure induced modifications in the partial density of states and electronic band structures reveal mixed multi-band multi-orbital nature of these compounds, with energetically degenerate dxz/dyz orbitals at ambient pressure. Due to larger hydrostatic pressures some of the electron/hole bands crosses the Fermi level, leading to significant topological modifications in Fermi surfaces known as Lifshitz transition. Interrelation between Lifshitz transition and superconductivity-an important subject matter of current research are described. Based on such interconnection the current study predicts the superconducting-Tc in 111 compounds can not be raised at such high pressures. Wannier functions based electronic structure investigation reveal a relatively larger hybridization between the Fe-3d and As-4p orbitals at higher pressures, as an effect of which the orbital degeneracy of dxz and dyz orbitals are lifted. Different hybridization contributions in the crystal-field splitting are separated using the Wannier functions based formalism, by incorporating different bands with a particular orbital character in the Wannier function construction. Pressure dependence of the intra/inter orbital hopping amplitudes between Fe-d orbitals has been discussed using low energy tight binding model.

Tetrahedral clustering in molten lithium under pressure

Abstract:A series of electronic and structural transitions are predicted in molten lithium from first principles. A new phase with tetrahedral local order characteristic of $sp^3$ bonded materials and poor electrical conductivity is found at pressures above 150 GPa and temperatures as high as 1000 K. Despite the lack of covalent bonding, weakly bound tetrahedral clusters with finite lifetimes are predicted to exist. The stabilization of this phase in lithium involves a unique mechanism of strong electron localization in interstitial regions and interactions among core electrons. The calculations provide evidence for anomalous melting above 20 GPa, with a melting temperature decreasing below 300 K, and point towards the existence of novel low-symmetry crystalline phases.

Abstract:Towards a resolution of the longstanding controversy regarding the existence of Cu-Li intermetallic compounds, we extensively investigate the phase stability of Cu-Li intermetallics with various possible stoichiometries at zero temperature and pressure using a global structure searching method. It is found that Cu-Li intermetallics can exist stably at atmospheric pressure, and three stable phases (Fmmm Cu1Li2, Fd 3 ¯ m Cu2Li1, and P 1 ¯ Cu7Li1) are identified. Electronic structure analysis reveals that although they are metallic, covalent Cu-Cu and ionic Cu-Li bonds are found in the three structures. Moreover, the 3d states of copper atoms are mostly responsible for bond formations in the stable phases predicted. For all the predicted Cu-Li intermetallics, the effect of Cu concentration on structure, mechanical and thermodynamic properties are calculated systematically. It is found that the copper atoms in Cu-Li intermetallics trend to form covalent bonds, so more covalent bonds are formed as Cu content increases, leading to the increases in the elastic moduli, Vicker hardness and Debye temperature with Cu content on the whole. The Poisson's ratios of Cu-Li intermetallics vary in the range of 0.25 and 0.35, and most of Cu-Li intermetallics exhibit an excellent ductile property. The elastic anisotropy calculations suggest that all the Cu-Li intermetallics show anisotropic elasticity more or less, and the percentage anisotropy in compressibility is smaller than that in shear for each of the predicted Cu-Li compounds.

Temperature-induced Electride Transition in Dense Lithium

Abstract:As a prototypical light metal, lithium shows various and intriguing behaviors including electride character under high pressure. It has a pronounced melting line depression from 40 to 60 GPa, yet a precise and detailed understanding of this melting minimum remains elusive. Here, using computations that include metadynamics, crystal structure searching, and molecular dynamics with machine learned potentials, we demonstrate a temperature-induced electride (pocketlike to tubelike) transition accompanied by complex structural phase transitions in dense premelting lithium. The possible rearrangement of nearest neighbors from three-coordinated net to dimers and the premelting collective atomic motion affected by this electronic transition demonstrates the combined influence of temperature and electronic structure on the high-pressure behaviors of metals.
Superconducting, Plastic, and Superionic States Driven by Four-Membered Lithium Rings in a High-Pressure Lithium-Lead Compound

Abstract:Using a combination of crystal structure search methods, first-principles calculations, and machine learning potential based simulations, we explored the lithium-lead system and predicted five phases: I4/mcm LiPb2, Pnma LiPb, I4/mmm Li4Pb, C2/m Li5Pb, and Cmcm Li6Pb. Among them, I4/mmm Li4Pb displayed remarkable properties, including superconductivity, plasticity, and superionic behavior at varying temperature ranges. At lower temperatures, I4/mmm Li4Pb manifests superconductivity with a critical transition temperature of 4-5 K. Its superconducting behavior is attributed to the interplay between the B2g vibration mode, which signifies the rotational motion of four-membered lithium rings within the stacking layer, and the participation of p-orbital electrons. As temperature rises, I4/mmm Li4Pb first transitions into a plastic phase, marked by continuous collective rotation of intralayer four-membered lithium rings, and then shows superionic behavior characterized by the emergence of interlayer lithium atom diffusion. These unique behaviors stem from stronger Li-Li bonds within four-membered lithium rings and a lower energy barrier for collective motion, distinct from interstitial localized electrons in electrides found in other lithium-based systems. This work provides an intriguing platform for exploring distinct states and establishes a correlation between various physical phenomena and the system's structure and bonding.
Ab Initio Study of Magnetic Phase Transition and Electronic Properties of CeFe2 under High Pressure

Abstract:C15 Laves phase intermetallic CeFe2 2 show reduced lattice constant and lower Curie temperature due to a strong 4 f-3d d hybridization. This hybridization is also believed to cause a ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition in CeFe2 2 under hydrostatic pressure. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to study the magnetic stability of CeFe2 2 under high pressure. With LDA functional, we predict a ferromagnetic-toantiferromagnetic phase transition of CeFe2 2 at 42.5 GPa. We also study how the projected density of states of Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d evolves with pressure. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we find an enhanced hybridization between Ce-4f f and Fe-3d d states which favors antiferromagnetism with the increase of pressure.
