Abstract:FeNiHCF was prepared by co-precipitation method, and the influence of synthetic temperature on the sodium storage performance was studied. The microstructure and micromorphology of the as-prepared FeNiHCF were characterized by XRD and SEM. A sodium ion half cell was constructed with FeNiHCF as cathode and sodium as anode. The sodium storage performance of the prepared FeNiHCF was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge test. The results show that the change of synthetic temperature affects the micromorphology and sodium storage performance of the material. The initial sodium content, specific capacity and cycle stability of FeNiHCF prepared at 60 degrees C are the best. The FeNiHCF prepared at 60 degrees C is a very promising cathode material for sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues have attracted tremendous interests as cathode materials for sodium ion batteries because of their low cost and high capacity. However, their commercial applications are hindered by low capacity utilization and insufficient cycle life. Here, we report on a MnCoNi-co-doped Prussian blue analogue with high purity and crystallinity by a citrate-assisted controlled crystallization process. Moreover, a novel strategy of in situ capturing for residual coordinated water during sodiation/desodiation process is proposed to achieve a high cyclability by using the aluminium chloride Lewis acid as electrolyte additive. The reversible cubic-rhombohedral phase transition is revealed by in situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transient electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The MnCoNi-co-doped composite delivers a capacity of 111 mAh g(-1) even at 1C and retains a capacity retention of 78.7% after 1500 cycles for sodium ion batteries. This work provides important insights on eliminating the parasitical coordinated water in lattice and modulating the crystallinity to develop high-performance Prussian blue and its analogues.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been regarded as prospective cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to tunable chemical composition and structure. Herein, a high-performance rhombohedral nickel hexacyanoferrate is synthesized via a controllable low-temperature reaction process. It can deliver impressive capacity retention of 87.8% after 10 000 cycles at 10C and high rate discharge capacity of 53 mAh g(-1) at 40C. According to the structural evolution and lattice water movement, superior electrochemical performance is ascribed to small lattice alteration and high reversibility of rhombohedral-cubic transition upon Na+ insertion/extraction. The environment information of local- and long-range structure evolution is revealed by ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Importantly, lattice water movement during cycling by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements offers an experimental validation about Na+ nonlinear migration path, as well as the accumulative lattice distortion effect from large-size Na(OH2)(+) unit. The revealed mechanism points out the modified path for PBAs.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries are attracting great attention due to the naturally alternative energy storage for large-scale applications. The reliable and high performance cathode materials are urgently needed for their practical applications. Here, we report sodium iron–nickel hexacyanoferrate (FeNiHCF) with Prussian blue structure by substitution of a portion of iron ions with nickel ions, and characterize it as cathode material of sodium ion battery for the first time. The low-spin Fe2+/Fe3+ couple in FeNiHCF is sufficiently activated for sodium storage, which leads to higher capacity contribution at larger potential and better stability on redox energy comparing with the single metal hexacyanoferrate of FeHCF or NiHCF. The FeNiHCF cathode presents synergistic advantages of high capacity, remarkable cycling stability, superior rate capability and good Coulombic efficiency. Significant improvement on electrochemical performance have been achieved with a discharge capacity of 106 mAh g−1, a Coulombic efficiency of ∼97% and excellent capacity retention of 96% over 100 cycles. Impressively, the FeNiHCF cathode present a good and stable cycling at high current densities, e.g. a capacity of 71 mAh g−1 and 100% capacity retention at a current density as high as 500 mA g−1. The intercalation chemistry manner for improving the sodium storage of material may shed light on improving the Na-storage performance of Prussian blue analogues.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) with stable framework structures are ideal cathodes for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries. The chelating agent-assisted coprecipitate method is an effective way to obtain low-defect PBAs that can limit the appearance of too many vacancies and water molecules and achieve an optimized Na-storage performance. However, for this method, the mechanism of chelating agent-assisted synthesis is still unclear. Herein, the synthesis process of nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) has been investigated by in situ infrared spectroscopy detection. The results show that the chelating agent oxalate slows down the nucleation process and effectively inhibits the formation of the Fe-C N-Ni frame in the aging process, producing highly crystallized and low-defect NiHCF samples. High quality NiHCF presents a high specific capacity of 86.3 mAh g(-1) (a theoretical value of similar to 85 mAh g(-1)), an ultrastable cyclic retention of 90% over 800 cycles, and a remarkable high capacity retention of 74.6% at a current density of 4250 mA g(-1) (50C). Particularly, the NiHCF//hard carbon full cell presents a high specific energy density of over 210 Wh kg(-1) and an outstanding cyclic stability without obvious capacity attenuation over 1000 cycles.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogs with an open framework are ideal cathodes for Na‐ion batteries. A superior high‐rate and highly stable monoclinic nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF‐3) is synthesized via a facile one‐step crystallization‐controlled co‐precipitation method. It gives a high specific capacity of 85.7 mAh g−1, nearly to its theoretical value. It also exhibits an excellent rate capability with a high capacity retention ratio of 78% at 50 C and a stable cycling performance over 1200 cycles. Through the ex situ X‐ray diffraction and pair distribution function measurements, it is found that the monoclinic structure with distorted framework is greatly related to the high Na content. The electronic structure studies by density functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrate that NiHCF‐3 deformation promotes the framework conductivity and improves the electrochemical activity of Fe, which results in an ultrahigh‐rate performance of monoclinic phase. Furthermore, the high‐quality monoclinic (NiHCF‐3) exhibits excellent compatibility with both hard carbon and NaTi2(PO4)3 anodes in full cells, which shows great prospects for the application in the large‐scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues have received particular attention as superior cathodes for Na-ion batteries due to their potential 2-Na storage capacity (∼170 mAh g(-1)) and low cost. However, most of the Prussian blue compounds obtained from the conventional synthetic routes contain large amounts of Fe(CN)6 vacancies and coordinated water molecules, which leads to the collapse of cyano-bridged framework and serious deterioration of their Na-storage ability. Herein, we propose a facile citrate-assisted controlled crystallization method to obtain low-defect Prussian blue lattice with greatly improved Na-storage capacity and cycling stability. As an example, the as-prepared Na2CoFe(CN)6 nanocrystals demonstrate a reversible 2-Na storage reaction with a high specific capacity of 150 mAh g(-1) and a ∼ 90% capacity retention over 200 cycles, possibly serving as a low cost and high performance cathode for Na-ion batteries. In particular, the synthetic strategy described in this work may be extended to other coordination-framework materials for a wide range of energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues are actively explored as low cost and high capacity cathodes for Na ion batteries; however, their applications are hindered by low capacity utilization and poor cyclability of these compounds. Here we show that this problem can be solved by controlling the purity and crystallinity of the Prussian blue lattices. As a model compound, single-crystal (FeFeIII)-Fe-III(CN)(6) nanoparticles are synthesized and found to have a sufficiently high capacity of 120 mA h g(-1), an exceptional rate capability at 20 C and superior cyclability with 87% capacity retention over 500 cycles, showing great promise for Na ion battery applications. More significantly, these results provide a new insight into the intercalation chemistry of Prussian blue analogues and open new perspectives to develop Na storage cathodes for widespread applications of electric energy storage.

Abstract:Prussian blue analogues are potential competitive energy storage materials due to their diverse metal combinations and wide three-dimensional ion channels. Here, we prepared a new highly crystalline monoclinic nickel-doped cobalt hexacyanoferrate via a feasible and simple one-step co-precipitation method. In the process of sodium-ion de-intercalation, three stable charge and discharge platforms, which are consistent with the cyclic voltammetry performance, are seen for the first time, showing the function of nickel ions in Prussian blue. Furthermore, the charge transfer and structural evolution caused by the transmission of sodium ions were well revealed via ex situ XRD, ex situ XPS, and in situ EIS studies. Simulation calculations are performed relating to the energy band structure and the highest-occupied bonding orbitals of the system in different charge states, revealing the charge and discharge mechanism of the nickel-doped material and the reason for the emergence of the new platform at low voltages. In addition, NaNi0.17Co0.83Fe(CN)(6) also delivers a striking capacity of 146 mA h g(-1) and superior cyclability, with 93% capacity retention over 100 cycles; it can be considered as a promising alternative cathode material for use in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues are regarded as promising cathodes for sodium ion batteries. However, the structural stability and interfacial compatibility of Prussian blue cathode are major issues for achieving superior performance. Sodium copper hexacyanoferrate is synthesized by an ion-exchange method, with large specific surface area and hierarchical core-shell structure. When used as cathode for half-cell, the material delivers an initial capacity of ~90 mAh g−1 and maintain more than 81% capacity retention after 1000 cycles. Even at a high rate of 20C, an impressive capacity of ~50 mAh g−1 is retained. Especially, a full-cell assembled by sodium copper hexacyanoferrate cathode and NaTi2(PO4)3@C anode shows a high capacity of more than 80 mA h g−1 for 400 cycles. A series of electrochemical techniques and in situ tests are carries out to confirm the advantages of stable structure and high conductivity after dopping copper ions. Furthermore, the low adsorption energy of Na+ on cathode surfaces is revealed by the first principle calculation.

Abstract:A novel air-stable sodium iron hexacyanoferrate (R-Na1.92Fe[Fe(CN)(6)]) with rhombohedral structure is demonstrated to be a scalable, low-cost cathode material for sodium-ion batteries exhibiting high capacity, long cycle life, and good rate capability. The cycling mechanism of the iron redox is clarified and understood through synchrotron-based soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which also reveals the correlation between the physical properties and the cell performance of this novel material. More importantly, successful preparation of a dehydrated iron hexacyanoferrate with high sodium-ion concentration enables the fabrication of a discharged sodium-ion battery with a non-sodium metal anode, and the manufacturing feasibility of low cost sodium-ion batteries with existing lithium-ion battery infrastructures has been tested.

Abstract:The nucleation rate plays a critical role in the synthesis of Prussian blue analogs. Rapid precipitation may lead to a large number of vacancies and a large amount of interstitial water in the material, resulting in poor electrochemical performance in batteries. Hence, sodium citrate is used to compete with [Fe(CN)6]4- to slow down the coordination rates of Ni2+ and Mn2+ ions with ferrous cyanide ions. The feasibility of the experiment is also confirmed by theoretical analysis. Benefiting from stable crystal structure and the removal of interstitial water, the as-prepared Na2NixMnyFe(CN)6 sample exhibits a high reversible capacity of 150 mA h g-1. In addition, a high rate performance of 77 mA h g-1 is achieved at a current density of 1600 mA g-1. Most noteworthy, the Coulombic efficiency and specific capacity gradually increase in the first few cycles, which can be ascribed to the formation of a passivation layer on the surface of the electrode. Continuous testing in an electrolyte solution of 1 M NaPF6 dissolved in sulfone reveals that the presence of a passivation film is very important for the stability of the electrode.

Abstract:In this study, highly crystalline Fe‐based Prussian blue analogs (Fe‐HCF) are synthesized via a one‐step pyrophosphate‐assisted co‐precipitation method. The as‐prepared Fe‐HCF can deliver a high specific capacity of up to 152.0 mA h g−1 and an excellent rate capability. A highly reversible three‐phase‐transition sodium‐ion storage mechanism has been revealed via multiple in situ techniques. Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) have attracted wide interest as a class of ideal cathodes for rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries due to their low cost, high theoretical capacity, and facile synthesis. Herein, a series of highly crystalline Fe‐based PBAs (FeHCF) cubes, where HCF stands for the hexacyanoferrate, is synthesized via a one‐step pyrophosphate‐assisted co‐precipitation method. By applying this proposed facile crystallization‐controlled method to slow down the crystallization process and suppress the defect content of the crystal framework of the PBAs, the as‐prepared materials demonstrate high crystallization and a sodium‐rich induced rhombohedral phase. As a result, the as prepared FeHCF can deliver a high specific capacity of up to 152.0 mA h g−1 (achieving ≈90% of its theoretical value) and an excellent rate capability with a high‐capacity retention ratio of 88% at 10 C, which makes it one of the most competitive candidates among the cathodes reported regarding both capacity and rate performance. A highly reversible three‐phase‐transition sodium‐ion storage mechanism has been revealed via multiple in situ techniques. Furthermore, the full cells fabricated with as‐prepared cathode and commercial hard carbon anode exhibit excellent compatibility which shows great prospects for application in the large‐scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:Abstract Iron-based Prussian blue analogs are promising low-cost and easily prepared cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Their materials quality and electrochemical performance are heavily reliant on the precipitation process. Here we report a controllable precipitation method to synthesize high-performance Prussian blue for sodium-ion storage. Characterization of the nucleation and evolution processes of the highly crystalline Prussian blue microcubes reveals a rhombohedral structure that exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate performance, and cycling properties. The phase transitions in the as-obtained material are investigated by synchrotron in situ powder X-ray diffraction, which shows highly reversible structural transformations between rhombohedral, cubic, and tetragonal structures upon sodium-ion (de)intercalations. Moreover, the Prussian blue material from a large-scale synthesis process shows stable cycling performance in a pouch full cell over 1000 times. We believe that this work could pave the way for the real application of Prussian blue materials in sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Recently, Prussian blue and its analogues (PBAs) have attracted tremendous attention as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of their good cycling performance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, they still suffer from kinetic problems associated with the solid-state diffusion of sodium ions during charge and discharge processes, which leads to low specific capacity and poor rate performances. In this work, novel sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanospheres with a hierarchical hollow architecture have been fabricated as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries by a facile template method. Due to the unique hollow sphere morphology, sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanospheres can provide large numbers of active sites and high diffusion dynamics for sodium ions, thus delivering a high specific capacity (142 mAh/g), a superior rate capability, and an excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the sodium insertion/extraction mechanism has been studied by in situ X-ray diffraction, which provides further insight into the crystal structure change of the sodium iron hexacyanoferrate nanosphere cathode material during charge and discharge processes.

Abstract:Low‐defect sodium nickel ferrocyanide is constructed as cathode material for Na‐ion batteries, contributing ultra‐long lifetime over 13 000 cycles and great rate capability based on a "zero‐strain" solid solution reaction mechanism. Prussian blue analogues are recognized as one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) owing to the open 3D framework structure with large interstitial sites and developed Na‐ion diffusion channels. However, high content of anion vacancy and poor structural stability have hampered the prospect of their application. In this work, sodium nickel ferrocyanide (Na1.34Ni[Fe(CN)6]0.92, NNHCF) is proposed as cathode material for SIBs. N‐coordinated Ni‐ion can boost NNHCF to possess less Fe[(CN)6]4− defect, low Na‐ion migration barrier, and more negative formation energy compared with Na0.91Cu[Fe(CN)6]0.77 (NCHCF), thus exhibiting more active sites, fast electrochemical kinetics behavior and great structure stability. It is confirmed that NNHCF undergoes a solid solution mechanism without phase evolution for reversible Na‐ion intercalation/deintercalation, employing Fe associated with C atom as redox center for charge compensation. Therefore, NNHCF contributes a high initial energy density of 180.94 Wh·g−1 at 10 mA·g−1, excellent rate capability, superior cycling stability with ultra‐long lifespan of 13 000 cycles, and low fading rate of 0.0027% per cycle at 500 mA·g−1. This work sheds light on the construction of low‐defect PBA cathodes with outstanding dynamics and stability.

Abstract:Prussian blue and its analogues are regarded as superior cathode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) owing to low cost, open framework and large interstitial spaces for the insertion/extraction of sodium ion. Herein, a highly stable monoclinic sodium rich nickel hexacyanoferrate (II) nanocube (m-NiHCF) has been synthesized via a facile coprecipitation method with the aid of chelating agent and surfactant. It delivers a high specific capacity of 70.1 mAh g−1 and maintains 97.1% capacity retention after 8000 cycles. Even at a high current density of 2000 mA g−1, an impressive capacity of 53.2 mAh g−1 is obtained. The fast kinetics of m-NiHCF is mainly benefited from the capacitive-controlled domination under the charge storage process. Meanwhile, ex-situ X-ray diffraction together with ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscope and ex-situ Raman and ex-situ Fourier transform infrared analysis have revealed the reversible phase transition between monoclinic and cubic phases with the reaction of carbon coordinated FeII/FeIII redox-active site during extraction and insertion of sodium ion in m-NiHCF framework. Furthermore, a high voltage aqueous SIB full cell assembled with NaTi2(PO4)3@C anode achieves a high energy density of 86 Wh kg−1 with capacity retention of 83% after 600 cycles, showing great prospects in the grid-scale energy storage application.
