Abstract:We report the room temperature formation of aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (NH2-MSNs) by means of co-condensation of different molar ratios of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) in the synthesis feed. The resulting materials are characterized by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements. Analysis reveals that an increase in APTES loading (mol %) leads to structural transitions in the MSNs from hexagonal (0–49 mol %) to cubic Pm3̅n (54–64 mol %) to disordered at very high APTES amounts (69 mol %). Investigation of structural evolution during cubic Pm3̅n particle synthesis reveals early particle formation stages that are surprisingly similar to those discussed in recent literature on nonclassical single crystal growth. These include significant heterogeneities in particle density despite crystallographic orientation across the entire particle as well as particle growth via addition of preformed and prestructured silica clusters. Syntheses at varying pH reveal further details of the structure formation process. The results pose fundamental questions about the relation between formation mechanisms of classical crystalline materials and mesoscopically ordered, locally amorphous materials.

Synthesis of Zeolite ZSM-5 Small Particle Aggregates by a Two-Step Method in the Absence of an Organic Template

Abstract:The preparation of zeolite ZSM-5 without using a template was extensively investigated. Zeolite ZSM-5 small particle aggregates were synthesized in the absence of a template using sodium silicate as the silica source and by controlling the nucleation time at high temperature with a simple two-step method in a rotating autoclave on a spit within an oven. The first stage at higher temperature consisted of accelerating the nucleation and the second stage at lower temperature consisted of obtaining small crystals in the absence of a template. The resulting zeolites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, and N2 adsorption. Compared with the micron-sized zeolite crystals that are synthesized in the one-step method, zeolite ZSM-5 small particles prepared by the two-step method have a higher specific surface area and an equivalent acid site content. The sample synthesized by the two-step method mainly contains Brönsted acid sites and a few Lewis acid sites indicating that Al is incorporated into the framework of the zeolite.

Abstract:Abstract Mesoporous silica can be synthesized by either the alkaline route or the acidic route, both using surfactants as templates. Morphological transformations of mesoporous silica can produce various hierarchical orders. Different morphologies are produced under different synthetic conditions. In the alkaline route, the surfactant/silicate liquid crystal system undergoes phase transformation to form vesicles and further transforms to the hexagonal phase. The results are tubule-within-tubule and hollow pillar-within-sphere structures depending on cosurfactant/surfactant composition. Using nitric acid in the acidic route, one can obtain hierarchical ropes or gyroids depending on stirring conditions. Ammonia hydrothermal treatment can induce further morphological transformation to nanotubes of mesoporous silica.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica molecular sieves have been prepared using nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 as template and tetraethylorthosilicate as silica source.The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD,N_2 adsorption-desorption isotherms,SEM,and TG-DTA methods.Characterization results indicate that these materials possess ordered mesoporous structure,high surface area and high pore volume.We also compared morphologies of samples synthesized under different conditions,and investigated the formation mechanism of these structures.

Abstract:In this study, a novel sol-gel method is used to synthesize amorphous silica-alumina materials with a narrow mesoporous distribution and various Si/Al molar ratios without using any templates and pore-regulating agents. During the preparation procedure, only inexpensive inorganic salts were used as raw materials, instead of expensive and harmful alkoxides. The precursor sol was dried at room temperature in a vacuum box kept at 60 mmHg until it began to form the gel. The results of a nitrogen sorption experiment indicate that the synthesized materials with different Si/Al molar ratios have similar mesoporous distributions (within 2-12 nm). Moreover, it was found that the material's pore size distribution remains at a similar value during the heat treatment from room temperature to 550 degreesC. On the basis of the nitrogen sorption, TEM, and AFM characterization results, a formation mechanism of mesopores which accounts for the experimental data is also suggested. This suggested mechanism involves rearrangement of the primary particles during the drying process to form the precursors of the similarly sized mesopores. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, thermal analysis (TG/DTA), Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and AFM. The results of Al-27 and 29Si MAS NMR indicate that the distribution of silicon and aluminum in the synthesized materials is more uniform and homogeneous than that in the mixed oxides prepared via the traditional sol-gel method even at high alumina contents. The type and density of the acid sites were studied using pyridine adsorption-desorption FTIR spectroscopy. It was shown that the acidity of the synthesized materials is higher than that of the silica-alumina materials prepared by conventional methods.

Abstract:A novel templating approach to the synthesis of vesicular mesostructured silica is demonstrated. Based on vesicular self-assembly formed in dilute cationic and anionic surfactants solution, and the hydrolysis and condensation of silicon alkoxide precursor on the interface of inorganic and organic species, this method is a simple and economic way to obtain vesicle-like mesostructure. The resulting vesicular mesoporous material is a good candidate in catalysis and separation as well as nanoscale devices.

Abstract:"Noodle-like" mesoporous silica with a diameter of about 180 nm and a length of ca. 10 mum was prepared through sol-gel process by using poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) complex as template. Parallel oriented regular mesopores with a diameter of around 2-4 mn are distributed along the wall of the particles, while the "worm-like" disordered mesopores can be found in the fringe part. This approach provides a new series of templates and a novel route to prepare inorganic mesoporous materials with special morphology.

Abstract:A novel sol−gel process has been developed for the synthesis of amorphous silica−aluminas with controlled mesopore distribution without the use of organic templating agents, e.g., surfactant molecules. Ultrasonic treatment during the synthesis enables production of precursor sols with narrow particle size distribution. Atomic force microscopy analysis shows that these sol particles are spherical in shape with a narrow size distribution (i.e., 13−25 nm) and their aggregation during the gelation creates clusters containing similar sized interparticle mesopores. A nitrogen physiadsorption study indicates that the mesoporous materials containing different Si/Al ratios prepared by the new synthesis method has a large specific surface area (i.e., 587−692 m2/g) and similar pore sizes of 2−11 nm. Solid-state 27Al magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR shows that most of the aluminum is located in the tetrahedral position. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image shows that the mesoporous silica−alumina consists of 12−25 nm spheres. Additionally, high-resolution TEM and electron diffraction indicate that some nanoparticles are characteristic of a crystal, although X-ray diffraction and 29Si MAS NMR analysis show an amorphous material.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.
A Unique Transformation Route for Synthesis of Rodlike Hollow Mesoporous Silica Particles

Abstract:Rodlike hollow mesoporous silica particles with ordered mesopores parallel to the axis were synthesized by using a surfactant mixture composed of zwitterionic and anionic surfactants as the templates with the assistance of a costructure-directing agent. The products were intact and dispersed hollow particles with a hexagonal cross section and an aspect ratio in the range 1.8-2.5. The mesostructure was stable even after calcination at 500 degrees C. Furthermore, the morphology and mesostructure of the products could be tuned through adjusting the surfactant molar ratio, which changed from rods to nearly spheres. After detailed detection of the morphology change of the products at different reaction times, it was found that the products were produced through a specific way that hollows out the chiral mesoporous silica solid nanrods and the addition of triethanolamine is the key step to produce hollow particles. Moreover, removal of surfactants by extraction led to a surface-functionalized sample with positive organic groups on the mesopore surface and with a high specific surface area up to 430 m(2) g(-1) which provided a good candidate for drug delivery and absorption matrix.

The cubic mesoporous silica product has an \{average\} pore size of 2.9 nm, a large BET specific surface area of 991 m\+2/g and a large pore volume of \{0.98 cm\+3/g\}.

Abstract:A new N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine-functionalized hollow mesoporous silica sphere (DA-HMSS) was synthesized by a two-step self-templating method, including hydrolysis and co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate and N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine in the presence of ammonia solution and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, following with hydrothermal incubation in pure water after the removal of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. The successful formation of silica framework and incorporation of organic component in DA-HMSS were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and solid-state 29Si cross-polarization/magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic measurements as well as CHN elemental analysis. The hollow morphology of DA-HMSS was revealed by transmission electron microscopy, whereas its porosity was disclosed by nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm measurement. Furthermore, its carbon dioxide adsorption capability was also investigated.

Abstract:Periodic mesoporous silica was synthesized within the pores of an anodic alumina membrane (AAM) by acid-catalyzed vapor phase synthesis. Three different surfactants, ionic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and nonionic F127 and P123, were used as a structure directing agent (SDA). Surfactant solution containing HCl was introduced into the AAM pores under moderate aspiration to avoid the formation of an undesirable mesoporous silica layer on the AAM surface. As-prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), small-angle X-ray diffraction and nitrogen sorption measurements. When using CTAB as an SDA, columnar hexagonal, circular hexagonal, and columnar hexagonal surrounded by circular hexagonal mesostructures were formed depending on the mass ratio of CTAB to HCl solution. This was a new observation in contrast to the previous reports where only the hexagonal columnar structure was obtained for CTAB irrespective of synthesis conditions. When F127 was used as an SDA, a cubic mesostructure was formed and the cubic mesostructure could be synthesized over a relatively wide concentration range of F127. When using P123 as an SDA, various mesostructures were formed such as disordered lamellar, silica nanotube filled with closely stacked silica nanoparticles, inverse circular hexagonal, inverse columnar hexagonal, and lamellar structures. These characteristic mesostructures within AAM pores were observed for the first time. In addition, a high filling factor was confirmed for all structural types of mesoporous silica within the AAM pores.
Design and Synthesis of Microporous and Micro/Mesoporous Silica Materials with Excellent Adsorption Properties Via Self-Assembly of Silica Species with Tetraethyl Ammonium in Acidic Aqueous Media

Abstract:The concentration dependence of tetraethyl ammonium cations (TEA(+)) in strongly acidic media was investigated through a pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR) technique. The results indicated that TEA(+) is morrodispersed in aqueous solution at relatively low concentration (<6 wt %), whereas they partially aggregate with each other at relatively high concentration (6-40 wt %). Different states of TEA(+) cations are expected to be used as possible templates for design of micropores or micro/mesopores mixed materials. Accordingly, a series of microporous silica materials and hierachically micro/mesoporous silica materials have been synthesized via self-assembly of silica species with TEA(+) cations in acidic solutions by simply controlling TEA(+) concentration. N-2 isotherms show that the samples synthesized at low TEA(+) concentration (<6 wt %) have uniform micropores (0.64-0.65 nm) and the samples synthesized at high TEA' concentration (6-16 wt %) exhibit both micropores (0.66-0.68 nm) and mesopores (3.5-3.6 nm). Furthermore, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric (DTA-TG) curves and infrared (IR) spectra indicated that TEA(+) species were certainly included in as-synthesized samples, confirming that TEA(+) species were the templates for the formation of porosity. Very importantly, these porous silica materials showed higher adsorption capacity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and cyclohexane at low relative pressure than conventional zeolites (Y and ZSM-5) and mesoporous materials (SBA-15 and MCM-41), which would be potentially important for the removal of VOCs in the future.

Abstract:We report a kinetically-controlled template-free room-temperature production of hollow silica materials with various novel morphologies, including tubes, crutches, ribbons, bundles and bells. The obtained products, which grew in a well-controlled manner, were monodispersed in shape and size. The role of ammonia, sodium citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone, chloroauric acid and NaCl in shape control is discussed in detail. The oriented growth of these micro-/nanostructures directed by reverse micelles followed a solution-solution-solid (SSS) mechanism, similar to the classic vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. The evolution processes of silica rods, tubes, crutches, bundles and bells were recorded using transmission electron microscopy to prove the SSS mechanism.

Abstract:Two different approaches, the conventional solvent evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) and the novel solvent evaporation induced aggregating assembly (EIAA), were employed to synthesize ordered mesoporous silicas (OMSs), respectively, by using amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) as the template, with an aim to systematically investigate the difference of the two approaches and their effect on the textural properties of the obtained porous materials. The mesoporous silicas synthesized via the two methods possess face centered cubic (fcc) mesostructure, large pore size and high surface area. However, compared with the OMSs with a film-like morphology from EISA, the OMSs from the EIAA have a particle-like morphology, thinner pore wall and higher surface area, which is favorable for their applications. More importantly, the novel EIAA process is more versatile and can be used to synthesize ordered mesoporous silicas and silica-based nanostructured materials with different morphologies. By introducing ethanol as the additive in the EIAA system, unique mesoporous silica spheres with a diameter of 1-5 mu m, large pore size (similar to 16.8 nm), huge window size (similar to 8.9 nm), and high surface area (similar to 482 m(2) g(-1)) can be synthesized. Through increasing the content of water, uniform silica hollow spheres (20-40 nm in diameter) and silica nanotubes (diameter similar to 30 nm) can be obtained by using templates with higher and lower molecular weight, respectively.

Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:Mesoporous silica particles have been prepared with functionalized precursors, used either in situ co-condensation process or as post-synthesis grafting agents, in order to deliver surface functionalisation. Aminopropyl, mercaptopropyl, vinyl and hexyl organosilanes were used as funtionalized precursors, tetraethyl orthosilicate as the base silica precursor material, hexadecyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as directing agent and water-ethanol mixture as solvent, with ammonia catalyst. The aim was to explore the effect of various recipes on the structural properties of the composite materials. The samples' microstructures have been evaluated using nitrogen sorption and small angle neutron scattering. Ordered mesoporous structures were obtained, for almost all synthesis conditions, after the solvent-extraction of the template agent. Only in one case, for the materials functionalized by mercaptopropyl groups in co-condensation route, disordered amorphous structure was obtained. All samples functionalized by post-grafting presented well-ordered mesoporous structures. The results have potential use for easy design of sorbent materials for drug loading or pollutant adsorption applications.

Abstract:Microporous silicas with pore sizes in the range intermediate between traditional microporous and mesoporous materials have been synthesized by using dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride as a template. These microporous silicas can be synthesized by either acidic S(+)X(-)I(+) or basic S(+)I(-) assembly pathways and consist of disordered channels with almost identical pore sizes of 12.2 Angstrom in both cases. Their BET surface areas are larger than 1000 m(2)/g after being calcined in air.
