Abstract:Harvesting energy from water movement directly has played a critical role, as water is one of the most common resources in our daily life as well as in our bodies. In this work, a kind of sandwich-like centimeter-sized hydrocapacitor has been designed, which can directly combine the energy harvesting and storage processes together. When small-scale water is dropped onto the device, energy can be transformed without a concentration difference or pressure gradient and stored through the electrodes simultaneously. To improve the performance of the hydrocapacitors, the structural effects of the device have been studied using different types of electrodes, membranes, and electrolytes. A single device can extract a maximal output voltage of 245 mV from tap water movement based on carbon nanotube/polyaniline composite (CNT/PANT) electrodes. In addition, the energy harvested by the hydrocapacitor using Phragmites communis membranes could reach 2.85 mJ cm(-2) from dropping tap water. What's more, the hydrocapacitor has good extendibility. Nine single devices in series could light up a light emitting diode (LED) therefrom. The mechanism of the hydrocapacitors based on streaming potential is discussed. These environmental friendly hydrocapacitors with a simple structure could provide a direction for application in self-powered portable and implanted medical devices.
