Abstract:High molecular weight aliphatic polyesters were synthesized from biobased 1,5-pentanediol and aliphatic diacids with 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, or 12 carbon atoms via melt polycondensation. The poly(1,5-pentylene dicarboxylate)s were characterized with intrinsic viscosity, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile testing. The effects of dicarboxylate chain length on crystalline structure and thermo-mechanical properties were investigated. All the polyesters had weight-average molecular weight over 100,000 g/mol or intrinsic viscosity over 1.05 dL/g except poly(1,5-pentylene adipate) (PPeA), which was less thermally stable than others. As semicrystalline polymers, they have a polyethylene-like crystal structure and crystallize rapidly except poly(1,5-pentylene succinate) (PPeS). Abstract:Simultaneous graft polymerization of polypropylene(PP) with two different monomers,maleic anhydride(MAH) and butyl acrylate(BA),using melting method was studied.Experimental results revealed that: if the grafting modification of PP was carried out only with MAH,the grafting degree(G) reached a maximum(0.65 mmol/g PP) when the dosage of MAH was 4%(mass ratio).In the co-grafting process,with the dosage of MAH at a constant amount(4%,mass ratio),it was found that the grafting degree attained a maximum(1.34mmol/g PP) when the amount of BA was 3%(mass ratio),which is double that with one monomer and higher than the value(0.36mmol/g PP) ever reported.Characterization by chemical titration,IR,DSC and TGA revealed that both MAH and BA are grafted with PP as short-chain branches.

Abstract:Most commodity polyesters are synthesized via melt polycondensation of dicarboxylic acid and diol using metallic catalysts; however, the resultant metal residues can pose toxic effects on human and environment. Although polyesters can be synthesized through autocatalysis of dicarboxylic acid without additional catalysts, high molecular weight (HMW) products cannot be obtained by this strategy, which was previously attributed to the low equilibrium constant of esterification and the difficulty of removing water. Herein, we get a new understanding that the kinetic deviation of dicarboxylic acid/diol monomers is the only reason for the low molecular weight of polyesters by autocatalysis. Accordingly, we introduce a dynamic stoichiometric strategy to overcome this difficulty using anhydride-formable dicarboxylic acids as monomers through a tandem mechanism involving proton transfer, anhydride formation and re-esterification. A series of catalyst-free HMW polyesters, including poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(ethylene succinate) (PES), poly(butylene succinate-cobutylene adipate) (PBSA), and poly(ethylene succinate-co-ethylene terephthalate) (PEST), were thereby synthesized. This new approach not only enables large-scale production of HMW polyesters comparable to commercial products, but also avoids the problems associated with catalysts, which is very promising for the applications with high safety requirements.
Preparation of high melt strength polypropylene by the reactive extrusion process and its foaming application

Abstract:The reactive extrusion of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) with ethylenediamine (EDA) as coupling agent was carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder to produce long chain branched polypropylene (LCBPP). Part of PP-g-MAH was replaced by maleic anhydride grafted high-density polyethylene (HDPE-g-MAH) or linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-MAH) to obtain hybrid long chain branched (LCB) polymers. Compared with the linear PP, PE and their blends, the LCB polyolefins exhibit excellent dynamic shear and transient extensional rheological characteristics such as increased dynamic modulus, higher low-frequency complex viscosity, significantly enhanced melt strength and strain-hardening behaviors. LCB polymers also have higher tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact strength and lower elongation at break than linear polymer and their blends. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was introduced in the reactive extrusion process. With the presence of scCO 2, the motor current of twin extruder was decreased and LCB polyolefins with lower MFR, higher complex viscosity and increased tensile strength and modulus were obtained. This indicates that the application of scCO2 can reduce the viscosity of melt in extruder, enhance the diffusion of reactive species, facilitate the reaction between functional groups, and increase the LCB density. The foaming behavior of both linear and LCB polyolefins were studied. The results show that cellular materials produced from the LCB polyolefins have higher weight reduction, smaller cell size and better mechanical properties than those produced from the linear polymers.
High Molecular Weight Soybean Oil-based Polyesters through Carboxyl-ester Transesterification

Abstract:Soybean oil-based diols (SOD) can be synthesized from soybean oil and polymerized with diacids to give soybean oil-based polyesters. However, the conventional esterification and transesterification mechanisms of polycondensation are incapable of obtaining high molecular weight (HMW) soybean oil-based polyesters due to the kinetic deviation of diol/diacid unit ratio from 1 : 1, which is required for producing HMW polyesters. Here we introduce a novel carboxyl-ester transesterification (CET) mechanism to synthesize HMW soybean oil-based polyesters through melt polycondensation. Using excess diacids to esterify with SOD, a carboxyl-terminated prepolymer was first afforded. Then the excess diacids were regenerated via CET and removed through sublimation, thus dynamically approaching the stoichiometric condition of the diol/diacid unit, through which a series of HMW soybean oil-based polyesters with viscosity-average molecular weights up to 123 kDa were obtained. The resultant polyesters exhibit good thermal stability and high transparency, and their adhesive performances are comparable to those of commercial pressure-sensitive adhesives. Furthermore, antibacterial soybean oil-based polyesters were achieved via thiol-ene "click" reaction of the alkene groups in the aliphatic side chain of polyesters with a thiolated quaternary ammonium salt.
Organic guanidine catalysis melt/solid polycondensation synthesis of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)

Abstract:Provided is a new process for using organic guanidine catalysis melt/solid polycondensation (MP-SSP) to synthesize poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). The method employs a highly effective ternary catalytic system constituted by organic guanidine, a promoter 1, and a promoter 2; by means of MP-SSP coupling technology, high-molecular-weight PBAT is synthesized. The beneficial features of the present invention are: highly efficient catalysis, short polymerization reaction time, and high polymer molecular weight; furthermore, the synthesis of the product PBAT may be controlled according to actual demands so that its molecular weight is within a range of 1.55×105 to 2.40×105; the product molecular weight distribution index (PDI) is narrow (1.50-1.90) and the product color is good (white); the process flow is simplified and production operation is safe, such that it is readily implemented on a large industrial scale.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to obtain the material that, in the future, may become a better alternative, as a functionalizing agent, to maleic anhydride (MA), or a crosslinking agent with the least amount of functional groups. To achieve that goal, a hyperbranched polyester polyol (HBP) of the second generation (HBP2G) was modified with MA to obtain HBP2GMA. The effects of the proportion of MA in the structural, thermal, and rheological properties of the HBP2GMAs were evaluated. Furthermore, these properties were compared with those of the HBP2G. A reduction in the intensity of peak corresponding to the OH stretching of HBP2G was observed with the increase in the extent of HBP2G modification by the analysis of the infrared (IR). HBP2GMAs showed a peak at 3030 cm-1 in their IR spectra, which was due to the -CH=CH- stretching of MA. This was further assessed by 1H NMR analysis. The number of MA units grafted into HBP2G was between 4 and 9, indicating a high degree of functionality. All materials possessed viscosity values below 34.94 Pa·s at 110 °C, which were dependent on the grade of the modification percentage (MP) and the molar content of MA grafted into HBP2G. Mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated the formation of products by the esterification reaction between the HBP2G and MA. The thermal stability of the HBP2GMAs determined as the decomposition temperature (Td) was between 258 and 281 °C which was better than that of the HBP2G.

Abstract:Maleic anhydride (MAH) was readily grafted onto polypropylene (PP) film by means of introducing the electron donor monomer n -butyl vinyl ether ( n -BVE), via two-step method. In the first step, the semibenzopinacol (SBP) groups were introduced onto the film surface under UV irradiation, and they were subsequently detected by both gravimetric method and UV spectra. In the second step, the “dormant” SBP groups were activated and cleaved from the substrate under heat, resulting in the formation of surface free radicals (grafting points) and the immediate initiation of graft polymerization; the temperature required for this process was found to be around 80 °C. The grafting results show that the grafting yield ( Y g ) of two-step method can be much higher than that of one-step method, and that the novel electron donor-acceptor grafting system is much more effective than that of pure MAH. Properly speaking, the Y g value could reach as high as 180% within 1 h, and the density of polar groups ( D p ) on the substrate was 49.5 μmol cm -2 correspondingly. Besides, the maximum Y g can be always attained at 1:1 molar feed ratio of MAH to BVE, indicating that the facile grafting process is attributed to the formation of charge transfer complex (CTC) between the binary monomers. Another significant result is that the good affinity of solvent towards substrate, and especially the desirable solubility for the graft chains are both preferable to heterogeneous graft polymerization. In addition, some phenomena characterizing “living” graft polymerization were revealed in this particular grafting system, which is expected to favor the control of the length and chemical structure of the graft chains.

Abstract:A mechanochemical process is proposed as an innovative approach to the synthesis of polypropylene-based macromolecular stabilizers with outstanding thermal behavior. Properly designed butylated hydroxytoluene antioxidants (BHT) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are covalently linked to polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) using a ball-mill apparatus under mild and solvent-free conditions. The study reports a quantitative evaluation of the degree of functionalization based on ATR-FTIR quantification technique and the solid-state NMR spectroscopy characterization of the ensuing materials. This strategy is a significant step towards safe and sustainable chemical synthesis in the field of macromolecular materials.

Abstract:An increase in plastic waste pollution and the strengthening of global environmental policies have heightened the need for research on biodegradable plastics. In this regard, polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) are notable examples, serving as alternatives to traditional plastics. In this study, the compatibility and mechanical properties of PLA/PBAT blends were improved by the chemical grafting of maleic anhydride (MAH). In addition, qualitative analyses were conducted, dynamic mechanical properties were investigated, and the structure and mechanical characteristics of the blends were analyzed. With an increase in the MAH concentration, the grafting yield of the blends increased, and significantly improved the compatibility of the PLA/PBAT blend, with an ~2 and 2.9 times increase in the tensile strength and elongation at break, respectively. These findings indicate that the modified PLA/PBAT blend demonstrates potential for applications that require sustainable plastic materials, thereby contributing to the development of environmentally friendly alternatives in the plastics industry.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years there have been a number of papers devoted to the special features of mechanochemical copolymerization of a number of natural and synthetic polymers with some special comonomer such as maleic anhydride. As a result of this mechanochemical copolymerization there are formed linear and branched products, containing isolated units of maleic anhydride. The anhydride rings of maleic anhydride are easily opened in the presence of moisture, and each unit of maleic anhydride in the copolymeric product forms the group (see PDF for diagram) Thus mechanochemical binding of the maleic anhydride makes it possible to “carboxylate” the polymers, modifying the properties of the original polymers according to the nature and amount of the carboxyl units added. In general mechanochemical modification by maleic anhydride leads to an increase in the stiffness, strength, adhesion to metals, hydrophilic nature and the possibility of carboxyl crosslinking. Thus the properties of modified natural rubber and SKS (butadiene-styrene rubber) approximate to those of carboxylated rubbers. This method of modification offers particular interest as a result of the simplicity and general availability of the mechanical apparatus (mills and internal mixers) required for the process.

Abstract:A convenient method for preparing high molecular weight polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poly (acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate) (P(AN-co-MA)) using a Lewis base (LB)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) system for controlled anionic polymerization was explored. Nine systems were shown to achieve high conversion and high molecular weight polymerization while maintaining low molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index, PDI = 1.03-1.57). Among them, the 1,8-Diazabicyclo [5,4,0] undec-7-ene (DBU)/DMSO and P(OEt)(3)/DMSO systems, notably, exhibited quasi-living polymerization allowing us to prepare PAN with ultra-high MW (1,110,000 g/mol), with high linearity while maintaining low PDI (1.49). Evidence has been shown that DMSO can interact with monomers, LB catalysts, and propagating chains during polymerization, unlike other aprotic solvents. Such interactions are found to increase the rate of chain initiation, stabilize chain propagation, and prevent chain transfer, branching and chain termination. P(AN-co-MA) was also prepared with this new method resulting in high M-w (880,000 g/mol) and better spinnability. Because of the good scalability of this method, it can be applied to other anionic monomers. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) shows lower cyclization temperatures and high thermal stability providing promise towards in the development of high-performance carbon fibers.

Abstract:A method for synthesizing biodegradable poly(succinic acid-co-butylene terephthalate) (PBST50-50) catalyzed by organic guanidine; the method uses a non-toxic biomass organic guanidine compound as a main catalyst and uses a non-toxic acid salt of zinc as a co-catalyst to form a bi-component high activity catalytic system, and uses succinic acid (SA), terephthalic acid (TA), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as monomers; the biodegradable PBST50-50 is synthesized first by means of direct melt polycondensation, and then by means of solid phase polycondensation. The PBST50-50 synthesized by employing the method has an average molecular weight Mw that may reach 1.0×105-1.2×105, and a melting point of Tm≥170°C, the product color being white.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP) is a widely used polymer matter, which has many advantages, such as rich sources, simple synthesis process, small density, low cost, easy processing and molding. At present, there has been a lot of progress in the research of polypropylene modified blending, including PP/ABS system, PP/SBS system, etc. However, the research on PP/AS blend is relatively few, and the experimental formula range is large, so it is difficult to determine the optimal ratio. On the basis of previous experiments, this study further narrowed the proportion range. Through AS modifying PP, the interface physical effect of maleic anhydride addition on the mechanical properties of the blend was discussed, and the optimal proportion was found to obtain the modified PP resin with significantly improved mechanical properties.

Studies on Modification of End Groups of Aliphatic Hyperbranched Polyester

Abstract:A new process was designed to modify the hydroxy capped aliphatic hyperbranched polyester, derived from 2,2-bis(methylol) propionic acid and trimethylopropane in which the crude polyester reacted directly with maleic anhydride in bulk to transfer the hydroxy end groups to 4-carboxy-2-butante end groups. The modified polyester was characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, DSC and viscosity measurement. The results indicated that no side reaction took place during the modifying step and the conversion for the reaction was calculated to be 88.9% based on the H-1 NMR spectra, The T-g value shifted from 320.3 K for the crude polymer to 288.4 It for the modified polymer. Moreover, the UV curing coating of the midified polyester showed high performances in hardness, adhensive and water resistance.
Synthesis by fast thiol-Michael click addition of biodegradable and potentially fully biobased architectures based on starch and polyester, towards sustainable and performing multiphase systems.

Abstract:For short-term sustainable applications such as packaging and agriculture, new biodegradable and renewable macromolecular architectures based on polysaccharide and polyester have been developed with an original multistep pathway, and then characterized. In a first step, amylomaize starch (AMS), based on rather linear polysaccharides with very high amylose content, and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), a potential fully biobased and biodegradable co-polyester, were chemically modified. Reactive maleimide and thiol groups have been added to their chemical structures. They have undergone a thiol-Michael addition, yielding a cross-linked network based on AMS and PBAT oligomers. In this large study, the structures of the different AMS and PBAT derivatives were precisely determined by FTIR, 1H, 13C APT and 31P NMR. Nitrogen containing products were also analyzed by 1H-15N NMR, a useful but largely underutilized tool, to determine the chemical structures of these synthesized products. This study clearly shows the high potential of these macromolecular architectures based on AMS and PBAT obtained by a fast click reaction, to develop reactive additives in the case of rather incompatible multiphase materials (blends, multilayers,) for a large range of short-term and demanding applications (packaging, agriculture,) for a greener future.

Abstract:Maleic anhydride (MAH)⁻divinyl benzene (DVB) multi-monomer melt-grafting onto isotactic polybutene-1 (iPB-1) was carried out in a torque rheometer. The effects of dicumyl peroxide (DCP), MAH, and DVB concentrations, and temperature, on the reaction, were investigated. The optimized conditions were 170 °C, DVB/MAH = 4:6 (mass ratio). DVB as a comonomer enhanced the grafting degree (Gd) and grafting efficiency (Ge) of iPB-g-MAH better than styrene. The initiator DCP had little effect on Gd as its concentration over 0.2 phr, but the grafts' melt flow rate (MFR) increased significantly, and relative molecular weight decreased remarkably with increased DCP concentration. With increasing Gd, the contact angle of grafts with water decreased, and there was a larger crystallization rate. The study of iPB-1 and iPB-g-MAH (Gd = 1.5%)-modified polyamide 6 (PA6) showed that iPB-g-MAH had an obviously toughening effect on PA6. With increasing iPB-g-MAH concentration, the blends of impact strength and elongation at break increased obviously, tensile strength decreased slightly, and MFR decreased prominently, which greatly slowed the processing degradation of PA6. The properties of iPB-1/PA6 blends deteriorated. Both DSC curves and SEM micrographs confirmed that PA6/iPB-g-MAH blends had much better compatibility than PA6/iPB. The reason was that the anhydride group in iPB-g-MAH reacted with amide group in PA6 to improve the compatibility between two phases, and iPB-g-MAH is an excellent modifier for PA6.

Abstract:Controlled polymerization to improve molecular weight by controlling side reactions has always been a major challenge in the commercial preparation of polyamides with new chain structures. Traditionally, it has been assumed that the side reaction of decarboxylation makes increasing the molecular weight of polyamide difficult, whereas the side reaction of deamination causes cross-linking phenomena such as gel. In this work, a new understanding was revealed by studying the high-temperature solution prepolymerization - solid phase post-polycondensation based on pentanediamine, terephthalic acid and adipic acid, that is, the deamination reaction of the high-temperature cyclization of pentanediamine and the subsequent condensation reaction between piperidine (the deamination cyclization product) and oligomer are the most critical reasons for the difficulty in the growth of the molecular weight for the polyamide polymerization. The phase diagrams of reversible and non-reversible control reaction regions were obtained by analyzing the reaction kinetics of the prepolymerization parameter-reaction degree. As a result, bio-based polyamides with properties comparable to commercial high-temperature resistant polyamides were prepared. This work will provide strong theoretical support for the large-scale preparation of high-temperature resistant polyamides based on the bio-based monomer pentanediamine.
