Abstract:Compact heat exchangers are becoming an increasingly established tool in the inventory of the process plant designer, in one or more applications across the entire range of process industry sectors. The knowledge about the heat transfer parameters of the air flow near the heated wall is essential to the design of a heat exchanger. Artificial roughness on a surface has been widely accepted as an effective technique to enhance the heat transfer rate in a heat exchanger. Roughness elements are used to improve the convective heat transfer by creating turbulence in the flow, however, it results in an increase in pressure losses and greater blower is required. With the advance of laser technology, the fabrication of more advanced surface geometries can be greatly facilitated. Hence, the main objective of this study is to investigate the heat transfer enhancement effect of laser-welded cross-ribs of different angles. This study showed that maximum heat transfer occurred when the cross-rib angle was approximately 68degrees-72degrees and maximum power requirement occurred at 72degrees-76degrees.
