Abstract:Size-tunable crystalline core-crystalline shell Zn2GeO4 nanorods were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction. High purity Zn2GeO4 nanorods were obtained at pH = 7. The length of Zn2GeO4 nanorods (L = 50-100 nm) can be controlled through a one-step process, while micro-sized nanorods with an aspect ratio of the length to the diameter of 10 were yielded in a two-step process. The single crystalline nature of Zn2GeO4 nanorods with a core-shell structure was verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) measurements. The Raman study revealed that there is no oxygen defect (V-O(center dot)) in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals, suggesting that photoluminescence emission of Zn2GeO4 can be attributed to the presence of the interstitial Zn defect (Zn-i(center dot)) in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals. As the diameter of nanorods decreased, the excitation and emission peaks appeared to be redshifted due to the quantum size effect.

Abstract:Core-shell nested structure of amorphous carbon coated on crystalline ZnO (carbonized ZnO) was synthesized by sol-gel method as precursor. Disordered ZnO nanoparticles were successfully prepared by annealing the carbonized the ZnO precursor. HRTEM, Raman and XPS analyses showed that the ZnO nanoparticles contain high concentration of oxygen-deficiency defects which enable them exhibiting an abnormal intense deep-level emission centered at green luminescence and spreading over a wide wave length range of 420-660 nm and having a negligible UV emission in its photo luminescence (PL) spectrum. They also show an enhanced photocatalytic activity in degradation of methylene blue (MB). Experiments and theoretical simulation based on density functional theory showed that the intense deep-level emission and improved photocatalytic ability should attributed to their abundant oxygen-deficiency defects in the ZnO nanoparticles introduced by the two-step preparation method. Abstract:Surface decoration techniques are emerging as promising strategy to improve the optical properties of the ZnO based materials. The core-shell ZnO/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 nanorods were grown on a FTO substrate through a facile hydrothermal and magnetron sputtering combined approach. The microstructure of the core-shell nanorod arrays were investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field emission Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HTEM). The optical properties of the core-shell nanorod arrays were investigated through the diffuse reflectance absorption spectra and photoluminescence emission. The visible light absorption and especially the photoluminescence emission of the ZnO nanorods are enhanced markedly with the Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 grains coating the ZnO nanorods through the electron charge. Abstract:Zn2GeO4 nanorods were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method at different pH values, and the morphology and luminescence properties of Zn2GeO4 nanorods were systematically studied. The SEM results indicate that the particle sizes decreased with the increased in pH values from micro- to nano-size, and the length of Zn2GeO4 nanorods (L=200 similar to 500 nm) can be controlled through the pH values. Two emission bands centered at 450 and 530 nm were observed which are associated with different native defects in Zn2GeO4 nanocrystals.

Abstract:We report a remarkable improvement of photoluminescence from ZnO-core/a-SiN(x):H-shell nanorod arrays by modulating the bandgap of a-SiN(x):H shell. The a-SiN(x):H shell with a large bandgap can significantly enhance UV emission by more than 8 times compared with the uncoated ZnO nanorods. Moreover, it is found that the deep-level defect emission can be almost completely suppressed for all the core-shell nanostructures, which is independent of the bandgaps of a-SiN(x):H shells. Combining with the analysis of infrared absorption spectrum and luminescence characteristics of NH(x)-plasma treated ZnO nanorods, the improved photoluminescence is attributed to the decrease of nonradiative recombination probability and the reduction of surface band bending of ZnO cores due to the H and N passivation and the screening effect from the a-SiN(x):H shells. Our findings open up new possibilities for fabricating stable and efficient UV-only emitting devices.
Size-Dependent Surface Effects on the Photoluminescence in Zno Nanorods

Abstract:One-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures are expected to show significant surface effects, which results in remarkable modification of the optical properties. In this work, an experimental study of surface effects on the photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO nanorods with different sizes is reported. A thin shell layer of Al(2)O(3) is used to passivate the nanorods' surface, which allows one to compare the PL spectra before and after dielectric coating. It is found that strong surface exciton recombination is present in ZnO nanorods with average diameter as large as similar to 500 nm. Coating the nanorods by Al(2)O(3) significantly reduces the surface state-related emissions, indicating that surface passivation rather than surface band-bending mechanism dominates. We also provide evidence that the long controversial 3.31 eV emission in ZnO is not related to surface states but a free-to-bound transition involving an unknown acceptor level of similar to 125 meV. In the visible spectral region, an orange emission around 2.1 eV together with the normal green emission is observed in the thick nanorods. The little change in intensity after Al(2)O(3) coating allows us to conclude that the visible emissions are unlikely from the surface. Based on a DAP-like transition model, we are able to interpret the blue shift of the orange emission with increasing temperature and attribute the emission to zinc vacancy defects.
