Abstract:This review describes recent progress in creation of nanojunctions between individual nanoobjects. The accomplishments of various strategies used for nanojunction creation are highlighted and the corresponding challenges are discussed. The possible ongoing development for the creation of device-oriented nanojunctions is speculated upon.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, various techniques for fabricating nano-gapped electrodes have emerged, promoting rapid development in the field of single-molecule electronics, on both the experimental and theoretical sides. To investigate intrinsic quantum phenomena and achieve desired functionalities, it is important to fully understand the charge transport characteristics of single-molecule devices. In this Review, we present the principles that have been developed for fabricating reliable molecular junctions and tuning their intrinsic properties from an engineering perspective. Through holistic consideration of the device structure, we divide single-molecule junctions into three intercorrelated components: the electrode, the contact (spacer-linker) interface and the molecular backbone or functional centre. We systematically discuss the selection of the electrode material and the design of the molecular components from the point of view of the materials, the interface and molecular engineering. The influence of the properties of these elements on the molecule-electrode interface coupling and on the relative energy gap between the Fermi level of the electrode and the orbital energy levels of the molecule, which directly influence the charge transport behaviour of single-molecule devices, is also a focus of our analysis. On the basis of these considerations, we examine various functionalities demonstrated in molecular junctions through molecular design and engineering. In this Review, the principles developed for fabricating reliable molecular junctions and tuning their intrinsic properties are examined from the point of view of the electrode, the interface and molecular engineering. The various functionalities demonstrated in molecular junctions through molecular design are discussed, along with the open challenges in the field.

Abstract:Interconnection of one-dimensional nanomaterials such as nanowires and carbon nanotubes with other parts or components is crucial for nanodevices to realize electrical contacts and mechanical fixings. Interconnection has been being gradually paid great attention since it is as significant as nanomaterials properties, and determines nanodevices performance in some cases. This paper provides an overview of recent progress on techniques that are commonly used for one-dimensional interconnection formation. In this review, these techniques could be categorized into two different types: two-step and one-step methods according to their established process. The two-step method is constituted by assembly and pinning processes, while the one-step method is a direct formation process of nano-interconnections. In both methods, the electrodeposition approach is illustrated in detail, and its potential mechanism is emphasized.

Abstract:Great efforts have been made recently to fabricate one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured materials and ordered nanomaterial arrays due to their novel chemical and physical properties for future application in nanodevices. One-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanowires (NWs), nanoribbons and nanotubes, are promising components in a wide range of nanoscale device applications. A large amount of fabrication methods have been developed to synthesize the nanomaterials, such as vapour growth and solution growth processes. In this feature article, we provide a review of some progress in the field of one-dimensional inorganic nanowires, including the syntheses, structures, properties and applications of nanowires and nanowire arrays of Si, ZnO, metals, heterojunctions, etc. materials.

Abstract:Plasmonic tunnel junctions are metal-insulator-metal structures with a nanoscale dielectric gap that can simultaneously support surface plasmons and electron tunneling.The extremely strong confinements and interactions of electrons,plasmons,and photons in the junctions provide a novel platform,merging electronics and photonics for studying and manipulating electrons and photons at the nanoscale.In this review,the recent progress in the field of plasmonic tunnel junctions is overviewed as concerns their applications in plasmon/light generation and plasmon/light-electron conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, 1D nanostructure-based devices have achieved widespread usage in various fields, such as sensors, energy harvesters, transistors, and electrodes owing to their exceptional and distinct properties. The pioneering work of Dr. R. S. Wagner at Bell Laboratories in 1964 introduced the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process, a powerful synthesis method. Since then, numerous synthesis techniques, including sol-gel, hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), and more, have been developed. These methods have enabled researchers to effectively control the shape (length and diameter) and material properties of nanowires. However, it was only about two decades ago that nanowires started to be widely utilized as key components in functional devices, primarily due to the lack of proper integration methods. Although dozens of integration techniques have been developed, none have emerged as a predominant choice, with each method presenting its own set of advantages and limitations. Therefore, this work aims to categorize these methods based on their working principles and provide a comprehensive summary of their pros and cons. Additionally, state-of-the-art devices that capitalize on the integration of 1D nanomaterials are introduced.

Abstract:<p>Molecular electronics is a promising subject to overcome the size limitation of silicon‐based electronic devices. In the past decades, various micro/nanofabrication techniques have been developed for constructing molecular junctions, and a number of breakthroughs are made in the characterizations and applications of the single‐molecule device. The history and progress are reviewed in this article, laying emphasis on the recent works on the combination of micro/nanofabrication techniques with other techniques such as electrochemical deposition and surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Some prototypical single‐molecule devices such as molecular transistors are presented. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the fabrication of single‐molecule devices are discussed.</p>

Abstract:The shape‐controlled synthesis of nanocrystals remains a hot research topic in nanotechnology. Particularly, the fabrication of one‐dimensional (1D) structures such as wires, rods, belts, and tubes has been an interesting and important subject within nanoscience in the last few decades. 1D necklace‐like micro/nano‐structures are a sophisticated geometry that has attracted increasing attention due to their anisotropic and periodic structure, intrinsic high surface area, abundant transport channels, exposure of each component to the surface, and multiscale roughness of the surface. These characteristics enable their unique electrical, optical, and catalytic properties. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the advanced research progress on the fabrication strategies, novel properties, and various applications of necklace‐like structures. It begins with the main fabrication methods of necklace‐like structures and subsequently details a variety of their properties and applications. Abstract:The development of semiconductor nanowires has recently been the focus of extensive research as these structures may play an important role in the next generation of nanoscale devices.Using semiconductor nanowires as building blocks, a number of high performance electronic devices have been fabricated.In this review, we discuss synthetic methodologies and electrical characteristics of Si, Ge and Ge/Si core/shell nanowires.In particular the fabrication and electrical properties of a variety of nanowire-based field effect transistors (FETs) are discussed.Although the bottom-up approach has the potential to go far beyond the limits of top-down technology, new techniques need to be developed to realize precise control of structural parameters, such as size uniformity, growth direction and dopant distribution within nanowires to produce nanowire-based electronics on a large scale.

Abstract:Synthesis and assembly of 1-dimentional (1-D) nanostructures and measurement of their electrical and optical properties are very important in fabrication of nanodevices. Recent developments in this field are summarized in this review. The assembling methods can be divided into two classes: assembly using macroscopic field forces and microfluidic-assisted-template-integration. The former can assemble nanowires by controlling direction and intensity of electric or magnetic field, while the latter represents a general assembly strategy for any kind of 1-D nanostructures. The assembly of 1-D nanostructures will make it possible to fabricate nanosensors, nanolasers and nanoscale logic gate circuits for computation.

Abstract:With the development of nano fabrication techniques,nano structure devices will be the basis of the next generation integrated circuits.We report process of Si quantum wire and dot based on EBL and RIE processes and process of nano structure metal gate based on EBL,electron beam evaporation and lift off techniques.Single electron transistors (SETs) on p type SIMOX substrates were also fabricated based on the processes.Coulomb blockade and single electron tunneling are observed in the SETs.

Abstract:The preparation of molecular junctions networks using self-assembly and microcontact printing of ligand-protected metallic nanoparticles is demonstrated. A subsequent in situ ligand-exchange reaction permits the interlinking of neighboring nanoparticles. The exchange process is shown to be reversible (see figure).

Abstract:Semiconductor nanowires are ideal for realizing various low-dimensional quantum devices. In particular, topological phases of matter hosting non-Abelian quasiparticles (such as anyons) can emerge when a semiconductor nanowire with strong spin-orbit coupling is brought into contact with a superconductor. To exploit the potential of non-Abelian anyons-which are key elements of topological quantum computing-fully, they need to be exchanged in a well-controlled braiding operation. Essential hardware for braiding is a network of crystalline nanowires coupled to superconducting islands. Here we demonstrate a technique for generic bottom-up synthesis of complex quantum devices with a special focus on nanowire networks with a predefined number of superconducting islands. Structural analysis confirms the high crystalline quality of the nanowire junctions, as well as an epitaxial superconductor-semiconductor interface. Quantum transport measurements of nanowire 'hashtags' reveal Aharonov-Bohm and weak-antilocalization effects, indicating a phase-coherent system with strong spin-orbit coupling. In addition, a proximity-induced hard superconducting gap (with vanishing sub-gap conductance) is demonstrated in these hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires, highlighting the successful materials development necessary for a first braiding experiment. Our approach opens up new avenues for the realization of epitaxial three-dimensional quantum architectures which have the potential to become key components of various quantum devices.

Abstract:For the miniaturization of microelectronics, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are regarded as ideal candidates for the next generation of nanoelectronics because of their excellent properties. To realize CNT-based electronics, intramolecular junctions are required components, which can not only connect different CNTs for integration, but can also act as functional building blocks in the circuit, such as rectifiers, field-effect transistors, switches, amplifiers, photoelectrical devices, etc. Therefore, intense attention has been focused on this topic and many advances have been achieved, especially in recent years. On the other hand, some challenges also exist. To provide researchers with a comprehensive overview of this field, this review discusses the synthesis, properties, and applications of intramolecular junctions of CNTs in detail. Among them, the applications of CNT integration are discussed specially. Furthermore, a brief summary and an outlook of future work are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Nanopores are valuable single-molecule sensing tools that have been widely applied to the detection of DNA, RNA, proteins, viruses, glycans, etc. The prominent sensing platform is helping to improve our health-related quality of life and accelerate the rapid realization of precision medicine. Solid-state nanopores have made rapid progress in the past decades due to their flexible size, structure and compatibility with semiconductor fabrication processes. With the development of semiconductor fabrication techniques, materials science and surface chemistry, nanopore preparation and modification technologies have made great breakthroughs. To date, various solid-state nanopore materials, processing technologies, and modification methods are available to us. In the review, we outline the recent advances in nanopores fabrication and analyze the virtues and limitations of various membrane materials and nanopores drilling techniques.

Microfluidic Synthesis of Nanohybrids

Abstract:Nanohybrids composed of two or more components exhibit many distinct physicochemical properties and hold great promise for applications in optics, electronics, magnetics, new energy, environment protection, and biomedical engineering. Microfluidic systems exhibit many advantages due to their unique characteristics of narrow channels, variable length, controllable number of channels and multiple integrations. Particularly their spatial-temporarily splitting of the formation stages during nanomaterials formation along the microfluidic channels favors the online control of the reaction kinetic parameters and in situ tuning of the product properties. This Review is focused on the features of the current types of microfluidic devices in the synthesis of different types of nanohybrids based on the classification of the four main kinds of materials: metal, nonmetal inorganic, polymer and composites. Their morphologies, compositions and properties can be adjusted conveniently in these synthesis systems. Synthesis advantages of varieties of microfluidic devices for specific nanohybrids of defined surfaces and interfaces are presented according to their process and microstructure features of devices as compared with conventional methods. A summary is presented, and challenges are put forward for the future development of the microfluidic synthesis of nanohybrids for advanced applications.

Abstract:Abstract The developments of advanced manufacturing have promoted the miniaturization of semiconductor electronic devices into a near-atomic scale, which continuously follows the “top-down” construction method. However, huge challenges have be encountered with the exponentially increased cost and inevitably prominent quantum effects. Molecular electronics is a highly-interdisciplinary subject that studies the quantum behavior of electrons tunneling in molecules. It aims to assemble electronic devices in a "bottom-up" manner on this scale through a single molecule, thereby shedding lights on the future design of logic circuits with new operating principles. The core technologies in this field are based on the rapid development of the precise fabrication at molecular scale, regulation at quantum scale and related applications of the basic electronic component of "electrode-molecule-electrode junction". Therefore, the quantum charge transport properties of the molecule can be controlled to pave the way for the bottom-up construction of single-molecule devices. The review firstly focuses on the collection and classification of construction methods of molecular junctions. Thereafter, various characterization and regulation methods for molecular junctions are discussed, then the properties based on tunneling theory at quantum scale from the corresponding molecular electronic devices have been introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to discuss further challenges and opportunities for future design of electronic devices.

Abstract:Intramolecular junctions can be formed in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by introducing a pentagon and/or heptagon into the hexagonal carbon lattice. The realization of these carbon-based molecular electronics is still quite challenging. Here, it is reported that nickel or cobalt catalyzed etching can be applied to partially unzip an SWNT into an intermolecular junction of SWNT/graphene nanoribbon, directly confirmed by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
