Abstract:This paper comprehensively reviews the recent experimental investigations and theoretical modellings on the mechanics-related material damages and their caused performance degradation of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Mechanics-related material damages in ASSBs at different scales and in different components can occur if stress exceeds material strength. Damages during ASSB charge/discharge processes, including cracking, debonding and Li dendrite growth are thoroughly discussed along with presentations of associated mechanisms. In addition, strategies and challenges to mitigate these damages and associated battery degradations are also reviewed. Finally, research directions to further reduce the impacts of mechanics-related material damages in ASSBs are provided to facilitate future research and development. Overall, the fundamental understanding of mechanics-related material damages discussed in this review will assist in the design and optimization of novel ASSBs towards practical application.
