Abstract:The earliest attempts in analyzing the heart period signal, through time domain analyses, were based on an analysis of the histogram shape. Time domain analysis techniques are relatively simple to compute but the predictive power is less desirable. Frequency domain analyses have been proposed. Parasympathetic and sympathetic system power can be attributed to distinct frequency spectra. In more recent years, many researchers have proposed other techniques such as the chaotic analyses of the heart period signal. It was conjectured that the heart period signal is a chaotic signal and the chaotic dimension can be used to estimate the severity of the potential risk of the subject. The authors have proposed another alternative technique based on the concept of dynamical noise and statistical complexity. Dynamical noise is a measure of the degree of structured noise in the underlying system. Statistical complexity is also an attempt to measure the degree of correlated randomness in the underlying structure of the system. In this paper, the various techniques and their efficacies are compared based on the same set of real data.
