Abstract:In this study, the degradation of a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Fe(III)/Oxone was conducted. IBP decomposition by sole-UV, UV/Fe(III), Fe(III)/Oxone and UV/Oxone processes was also carried out to evaluate the isolated effects contributing to IBP degradation. The influence of pH levels, the concentration of Fe(III) and Oxone, and inorganic anions on the performance of UV/Fe(III)/Oxone process was evaluated. SPME (Solid phase microextraction)/GC/MS were used to identify the intermediates for the first time. Nineteen intermediates/byproducts were detected during IBP degradation, among which six escaped from the detection in previous studies. Based on the analysis of intermediates, possible decay pathways of IBP were proposed accordingly. Decarboxylation and hydroxylation were believed to be major reaction mechanisms involved in IBP degradation by UV/Fe(III)/Oxone process. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Oxidation of Ibuprofen in Water by Uv/O3 Process: Removal, Byproducts, And Degradation Pathways

Abstract:Owing to the huge consumption of ibuprofen (IBP), its risk of exposure in water is of concern. The UV/O3 process has advantages in IBP degradation compared with the single UV and O3 processes. To promote the utilization of UV/O3, further exploration is necessary. In this study, the degradation mechanisms, byproduct security and cost of the UV/O3 process were investigated. Degradation kinetics showed that adding of UV irradiation into 0.6 mg/ L of O3 increased the IBP degradation rate by 10 times, subsequently achieving a superior mineralization result. When the pH values changed (4.0-10.0) or humic acid existed in water, the UV/O3 efficiency was less affected compared with that of O3 process, which mainly attributed to the promotion of HO center dot formation during UV/O3. Eleven byproducts with-OH/-COOH groups were identified in UV/O3, most of which contained 2-6 carbons. Ozonation produced the same types of byproducts, but the byproducts from UV irradiation were aromatics. Toxicity evaluation indicated that the 4 '-(2-Methylpropyl)acetophenone formed in the UV process had stronger bioaccumulation potential than IBP, and some byproducts produced in the O3 and UV/O3 processes were more harmful based on the oral rate LD50 values. Because the byproduct transformations in UV/O3 accomplished within 10 min compared with the 100 min in the separate processes, the UV/O3 technology could better ensure byproduct security. In addition, the cost of UV/O3 was most acceptable among the three technologies under the same IBP degradation target. The UV/O3 technology had the promotion potential in IBP wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was employed as an activator of ozone (O3) to degrade non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (aspirin (ASA) and phenacetin (PNT)) in study. The combination of PMS in O3 system promoted the O3 decomposition and NSAIDs removal significantly. O3 molecule, hydroxyl radical (OH) and sulfate radical (SO4−) were responsible for the removal of target pollutants in O3/PMS system. The second-rate constants between O3, OH and SO4− with ASA were determined to be 7.32, 4.18 × 109 and 3.46 × 108 M−1·s−1, and 37.3, 4.99 × 109 and 5.64 × 108 M−1·s−1 for PNT, respectively. The pattern of pollutant removal and contributions of oxidative species were fitted by experiments and two models. Nevertheless, the wide variety of two models suggested that a comprehensive model for O3/PMS based on a first-principles approach was not yet possible, due to the number of radicals and subsequent chain reaction, such as SO5− or O3−. In addition, the formation of five typical CX3R -type disinfection by products was evaluated from post‑chlorine tests and theoretically calculation by frontier electron density calculation. The calculated toxicity of typical CX3R -type DBPs was found to decrease with the increase of pH. The results of this study provide a basis for exploring the mechanism of pollutant degradation in O3 system.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have received extensive attention in the elimination of persistent organic pollutants in recent years. The activation of PMS depends on the selection and preparation of the catalyst. This study prepared nano-plate Bi2Fe4O9 using a one-step hydrothermal method to active PMS for the elimination of ibuprofen (IBP). The influence of hydrothermal reaction parameters on the activity of Bi2Fe4O9 (BFO) toward PMS was investigated to optimize the synthesis conditions. The obtained optimal BFO exhibited higher catalytic activity toward PMS in terms of IBP degradation than its homogeneous counterpart (Fe2+/PMS). IBP (0.025 mM) was completely degraded within 5 min at pH ranging from 5 to 9; the optimal pH level was neutral. Based on EPR measurements and radical quenching tests, both SO4 center dot- and center dot OH contributed to IBP degradation in BFO/PMS system. Oxygen vacancies (OVs) and Fe(III) are believed as the active sites on BFO surface to activate PMS based on EPR measurements, Raman spectra and DFT calculation. The degradation pathways of IBP include decarboxylation, the oxidation of methylene, hydroxylation and demethylation in BFO/PMS system. Based on the yield of intermediates, decarboxylation was considered as a major degradation pathway.

Abstract:Ibuprofen (IBU), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is one of the most widely used and frequently detected pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water bodies. This study examined the IBU degradation in aquatic solutions via ferric ion activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupled with electro-oxidation (EC/Fe3+/PDS). The degradation mechanisms involved three synergistic reactions in the EC/Fe3+/PDS system, including: (1) the electro-oxidation; (2) SO4•− generated from the activation of PDS by ferrous ions formed via cathodic reduction; (3) SO4•− generated from the electron transfer reaction. The radical scavenging experiments indicated that SO4•− and •OH dominated the oxidation process. The effects of the applied current density, PDS concentration, Fe3+ dosage, initial IBU concentration and initial pH as well as inorganic anions and humic acid on the degradation efficiency, were studied, and the degradation process of IBU followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. About 99.37% of IBU was removed in 60 min ((Fe3+ concentration) = 2.0 mM, (PDS concentration) = 12 mM, (initial IBU concentration) = 30 mg/L, current density = 15 mA/cm2, initial pH = 3). Finally, seven intermediate compounds were identified and probable IBU degradation pathways in the EC/Fe3+/PDS system were speculated.

Abstract:The advanced oxidation technologies based on •OH can effectively degrade the pharmaceutical and personal care products under operating conditions of normal temperature and pressure. In this study, direct photolysis of ibuprofen (IBU) is slow due to the relatively low molar extinction coefficient and quantum yield. Compared to direct photolysis, the degradation kinetics of IBU was significantly enhanced in the UV/H2O2 system, mainly by •OH radical mediated oxidation. In the UV/H2O2 system, the degradation rate of ionic IBU was slightly faster than that of the molecular form. Kinetic analysis showed that the second-order reaction rate constant of ionic IBU (5.51 × 109 M-1 s-1) was higher than that of the molecular form (3.43 × 109 M-1 s-1). The pseudo first-order rate constant for IBU degradation (kobs) increased with increasing H2O2 dosage. kobs can be significantly decreased in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM), which is due to (i) NOM radical scavenging effects (dominant role) and (ii) UV absorption. The degradation of IBU was inhibited by HCO3-, which was attributed to its scavenging effect. Interestingly, when NO3- was present in aqueous solution, a slight increase in the degradation rate was observed, which was due to NO3- absorbing photons to generate •OH at a low quantum yield. No obvious effects were observed when SO42 and Cl- were present.

Abstract:An electrogenerated peroxone process was innovatively structured to effectively degrade the antiphlogistic ibuprofen (IBU) representing typical refractory pharmaceutical. The process involved electrogenerated O 3 from H 2 O oxidation using a Ti mesh/SnO 2 -F anode in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and electrogenerated H 2 O 2 from O 2 reduction using a carbon-polytetrafluoroethylene (C/PTFE) cathode. The synergetic system of H 2 O 2 and O 3 formed in situ could generate hydroxyl radical (OH) to achieve IBU degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) removal. The effects of current density, aqueous initial pH, and coexisting anions on IBU removal efficiencies were investigated and then optimized as 30 mA/cm 2 and neutral condition. As a result, IBU decomposition and TOC mineralization could be finished after 10 min and 120 min electrolysis, respectively. The stability of the synergetic system combining MEA with C/PTFE-O 2 was also evaluated and confirmed through multiple cycles of electrogenerated peroxone based on TOC removal efficiency. In addition, IBU degradation pathways were proposed according to the identification of intermediates (e.g. hydroxylated IBU, phenolics, and carboxylic acids) by HPLC-MS/MS. These results manifested that this synergetic system is a promising technology to remove aqueous recalcitrant pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV328) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant ubiquitously found in environmental matrices. Though some advanced oxidation processes have been tested to degrade UV328 in waste streams, the degradation mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, the degradation of UV328 by ozone (O3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was systemically investigated. At neutral pH, 97.0% UV328 was removed in 5 min with 6.4 mg/min O3 and 2 mM PMS, and the degradation rate was positively correlated with the concentration of oxidants. Hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) participated in the degradation of UV328, in which 1O2 played a key role. Based on the identified transformation intermediates and density functional theory simulations, three degradation pathways of dehydrogenation, cycloaddition and hydroxylation were proposed. •OH and SO4•- radicals could attack UV328 through hydrogen atom abstraction channel. 1O2-mediated cycloaddition reaction is favorable, and •OH could react with UV328 via radical adduct formation pathway. Toxicity assessment indicated that O3/PMS treatment mitigated the ecological risks of UV328.
The degradation mechanism of sulfamethoxazole under ozonation: a DFT study.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a kind of antibiotic, remains in the environment and threatens public health. Ozone as a strong and green oxidant was widely used for selective oxidation degradation of residual SMX. However, it is hard to elucidate the detailed oxidation mechanism through current experimental approaches. A theoretical study has been carried out herein for exploring possible ozonation pathways of SMX. Two reaction mechanisms, viz., direct addition (DA) and H atom transfer (HAT), are considered. The results show that the primary oxidation of aromatic rings (benzene or isoxazole rings) of SMX follows the DA mechanism, featuring an electrophilic addition. Whereas, the oxidation of amino and methyl groups of SMX follows the HAT mechanism. Following the proposed mechanisms, the primary oxidation products detected in previous experiments could reasonably be obtained according to the current calculations. More importantly, O-3 molecules as an electrophilic agent feasibly attack the moiety having a large orbital contribution to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of sulfonamides. This result suggests that the primary ozonation site of sulfonamides could be theoretically predictable through the information of their frontier molecular orbitals. Meanwhile, a positive correlation between the O-3-mediated HAT energy barriers and bond dissociation energies has been found for N-H and C-H bond oxidations.
Degradation Characteristics and Mechanism of Ibuprofen by Ozone Catalyzed by Nitrogen-Doped Biochar

Abstract:This study used a novel nitrogen-doped biochar (N-C) to catalyze the oxidative degradation of IBP in water by ozone and studied the catalytic ozone oxidation degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) efficiency and mechanism. Furthermore, it explored the influence of pH, ozone dosing quantity, catalyst dosing quantity, different anions, and background of water quality conditions on the IBP degradation efficiency. The results showed that, compared with that of some common carbon-based catalysts (g-C3N4, biochar, and granular-activated carbon) and metal catalysts (MnO2 and Fe3O4), the N-C catalytic ozone system had a very outstanding oxidation degradation performance of organic pollutants; the removal rate of IBP reached 100% in 5 min, and the utilization rate of ozone was increased from 10% to 46%. The treatment efficiency of the system was enhanced with the increase in pH. Compared with that by increasing the ozone dosage, the treatment capacity of the system was significantly improved by increasing the concentration of catalyst. The quenching experiment and EPR further confirmed that N-C could effectively catalyze ozone to produce more reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide radicals (·O2-) and H2O2. It was also found that·O2- was the main active substance in the reaction system and played a leading role in the degradation of IBP.

Abstract:Electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) treatment of the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen aqueous solution was investigated in this study. The E-peroxone process combined conventional ozonation with electrolysis processes, and used a carbon-polytetrafluorethylene cathode to electrochemically generate H2O2 from O2 in the sparged ozone generator effluent (O2 and O3 mixture). The in-situ generated H2O2 then reacted with the sparged O3 to produce aqueous •OH, which can in turn oxidize pollutants effectively in the bulk solution. The E-peroxone process overcomes several intrinsic limitations of conventional ozonation and electrolysis processes for pollutant degradation such as the selective oxidation with O3 and mass transfer limitations of pollutants to the electrodes, and thus significantly enhanced both ibuprofen degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization. Results show that ibuprofen could be completely degraded much more rapidly in the E-peroxone process (e.g., 5-15 min under all tested reaction conditions) than in ozonation (≥30 min) and electrolysis (several hours) processes. In addition, thanks to the powerful and non-selective oxidation capacity of •OH, toxic intermediates formed during ibuprofen degradation could be completely mineralized in the E-peroxone process. The E-peroxone effluent (2 h) thus exhibited much lower toxicity (5% inhibition of bioluminescence of Vibrio fisheri) than the ozonation and electrolysis effluents (22% and 88% inhibition, respectively). The results of this study indicate that the E-peroxone process may provide a promising technology for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This paper explored ozonation for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater and p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) was selected as the model pharmaceutical intermediate. The results showed that the ozonation process is efficient for the degradation of PTSA both in concentration and COD removal. The mono factor results showed that 60L/h was a suitable ozone flow rate. There were sharp difference between acid condition and alkaline condition, under acidic conditions, the direct oxidation with molecular ozone is of primary importance, and under alkaline conditions the hydroxyl oxidation starts to dominate, and pH=12 was a suitable value. Further, intermediates of PTSA degradation were analyzed and the reaction mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:The degradation of ibuprofen was investigated by using Fenton method. The effects of different tactors on the removal efficiency of ibuprofen were evaluated. The order of main factors were O O rthogo ptimal nal experiments as follow: the mole ratio of Fe2+ to H2O2 〉 H2O2 dosage 〉 reaction conditions were as follow : dosage of H2O2 was 3 mL. L- 1, the mole ratio 1 : 10, the initial pH was 3 and the reaction time was 40 min. Under such conditions, the ibuprofen was over 86%. The reaction kinetics was also investigated. The degradation of oxidation was accord with the second order kinetics.
Synergistic Effects of Ozone/peroxymonosulfate for Isothiazolinone Biocides Degradation: Kinetics, Synergistic Performance and Influencing Factors.

Abstract:Synergistic effects of ozone (O3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5xe213; ) for isothiazolinone biocides degradation was studied. The synergistic ozonation process (O3/PMS) increased the efficiency of methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT) degradation to 91.0% and 81.8%, respectively, within 90 s at pH 7.0. This is 30.6% and 62.5% higher than the corresponding ozonation efficiency, respectively. Total radical formation value (Rct,center dot R) for the O3/PMS process was 24.6 times that of ozonation alone. Calculated second-order rate constants for the reactions between isothiazolinone biocides and xfffc; (kSO4 center dot-,MIT and kSO4 center dot-,CMIT) were 8.15 x 109 and 4.49 x 109 Mxe213; 1 sxe213; 1, respectively. Relative contributions of O3, hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) and oxidation to MIT and CMIT removal were estimated, which were 15%, 45%, and 40% for O3, center dot OH and oxidation to MIT, and 1%, 67%, and 32% for O3, center dot OH and xfffc; oxidation to CMIT at pH 7.0, respectively. Factors influencing the O3/PMS process, namely the solution pH, chloride ions (Clxe213; ), and bicarbonate (HCO3xe213; ), were evaluated. Increasing the solution pH markedly accelerated O3 decay and center dot OH and xfffc; formation, thus weakening the relative contribution of O3 oxidation while enhancing that of center dot OH and xfffc; . Clxe213; had a negligible effect on MIT and CMIT degradation. Under the dual effect of bicarbonate (HCO3xe213; ) as inhibitor and promoter, low concentrations (1-2 mM) of bicarbonate weakly promoted MIT and CMIT degradation, while high concentrations (10-20 mM) induced strong inhibition. Lastly, oxidation performance of O3 and O3/PMS processes for MIT and CMIT degradation in different water matrices was compared.
Efficiently photocatalysis activation of peroxymonosulfate by bimetallic metal-organic frameworks Mn-MIL-53(Fe) for ibuprofen degradation: Synergistic efficiency, mechanism and degradation pathways

Abstract:In this study, a UV-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was constructed using bimetallic metal-organic frameworks to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Mn-MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesised by adjusting the doping ratio of Mn using solvothermal method. The removal of ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process was as high as 79.7% in 30 min with a Mn doping ratio of 1.0 (molar ratio of Mn to Fe), and the reaction rate constant was 26.9% higher than undoped. Mn-MIL-53(Fe) had been systematically characterized in terms of its physical structure, microscopic morphology, surface functional groups and photoelectric properties. The mechanism investigation revealed that the cycling of Mn and Fe accelerated the rate of electron transfer in the system, which significantly increased the activation efficacy of PMS to generate more hydroxyl and sulfate radicals for IBP degradation. A total of 13 transformation products were detected during the degradation of IBP by the UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process. Theoretical calculations were used to predict the sites on the IBP molecule that were vulnerable to attack, and four possible degradation pathways were deduced. The excellent stability and efficient catalytic properties of Mn-MIL-53(Fe) provided a promising solution to the problem of water treatment contaminated with PPCPs.
Enhanced Removal of Bisphenol S in Ozone/Peroxymonosulfate System: Kinetics, Intermediates and Reaction Mechanism

Abstract:The degradation process of bisphenol S (BPS) in ozone/peroxymonosulfate (O3/PMS) system was systematically explored. The results showed that the removal efficiency of BPS by O3 could be significantly improved with addition of PMS. Compared with ozonation alone, the pseudo-first-order constant (kobs) was increased by 2–5 times after adding 400 μM PMS. In O3/PMS system, accelerated removal of BPS was observed under neutral and alkaline conditions. The removal efficiency of BPS reached 100% after 40 s of reaction at pH 7.0, with the kobs of 0.098 s−1. Moreover, Cu2+ had a catalytic effect on the O3/PMS system, because it could catalyze the decomposition of ozone and PMS to produce •OH and SO4•-, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance illustrated that •OH and SO4•- were the reactive species in O3/PMS system. Twelve intermediates were identified by mass spectrometry, and the degradation reactions in O3/PMS system mainly included hydroxylation, sulfate addition, polymerization and β-scission. Finally, the toxicity of the products was evaluated by the EOCSAR program. Our results introduce an efficient method for BPS removal and would provide some guidance for the development of O3-based advanced oxidation technology.

Abstract:Ibuprofen (IBP), a widely used anti-inflammatory drug, has been detected in many rivers and lake waters. This study was aimed to degrade the ibuprofen from synthetic wastewater by using UV-LED/catalytic and UV-LED/ oxidants advanced oxidation process. The degradation of IBP was investigated with ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED) irradiation in presence of Titanium dioxide (TiO2), Zinc oxide (ZnO), Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Potassium peroxomonosulfte (PMS) and Potassium peroxodisulfate (PDS). It was observed that the degradation of IBP was directly influenced by the pH of IBP solution, and higher degradation rate was observed at lower pH values. The study on effect of irradiation time showed that both TiO2 and ZnO can completely degrade the IBP within 90 min, while H2O2, PMS, and PDS degraded 38%, 55%, and 74% IBP respectively. The UV-LED/TiO2 system was found to be the most efficient among all selected systems (UV-LED/ZnO; UV-LED/ H2O2; UV-LED/PMS; UV-LED/PDS). The SPME (Solid phase microextraction)/GC-MS was used for the better illustration of Ibuprofen degradation mechanism and to identify generated byproduct in the degradation process. Four byproducts(benzene-1-ethenyl-4-(2-methypropyl), benzene 1-(1-hydroxyethyl)-4-isobutyl, 4'-(2-methylpropyl)acetophenone, ibuprofen methyl ester) were detected after UV-LED catalytic degradation of IBP solution. The present study showed that the UV-LED/catalyst process significantly enhanced the degradation of IBP in comparison to direct photolysis by UV-LED.

Abstract:Ibuprofen (IBU), a widely used antipyretic and analgesic, has been frequently detected in various natural water systems. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are effective ways to remove pollutants from water. The degradation of IBU under UV/H2O2 conditions in the presence of various natural dissolved matter was investigated using density functional theory (DFT). The eco-toxicological properties were predicted based on quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model. Calculated results showed that two H-abstraction reactions occurring at the side chain are predominant pathways in the initial reaction. H2O, NH3, CH3OH, C2H5OH, HCOOH and CH3COOH can catalyze the H transfer in the degradation process through decreasing the energy barriers and the catalysis effects follow the order of NH3 > alcohols > acids > H2O. The catalysis effects differ at acid or alkaline conditions. The overall rate coefficient of the reaction of IBU with •OH is calculated to be 5.04  109 M-1 s-1 at 298 K. IBU has harmful effects to aquatic organism and human beings and the degradation process cannot significantly reduce its toxicity. Among all products, 2-(4-formylphenyl)propanoic acid, which is more toxic than IBU, is the most toxic with acute and chronic toxicity, developmental toxicity, mutagenicity, genotoxic carcinogenicity and irritation/corrosivity to skin. The findings in this work provide new insights into the degradation of IBU and can help to assess its environmental risks.

Abstract:Ibuprofen (IBP) is a typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with a wide range of applications, large dosages, and environmental durability. Therefore, ultraviolet-activated sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC) technology was developed for IBP degradation. The results showed that IBP could be efficiently removed using UV/SPC. The IBP degradation was enhanced with prolonged UV irradiation time, with the decreasing IBP concentration and the increasing SPC dosage. The UV/SPC degradation of IBP was highly adaptable to pH ranging from 4.05 to 8.03. The degradation rate of IBP reached 100% within 30 min. The optimal experimental conditions for IBP degradation were further optimized using response surface methodology. IBP degradation rate reached 97.3% under the optimal experimental conditions: 5 mu M of IBP, 40 mu M of SPC, 7.60 pH, and UV irradiation for 20 min. Humic acid, fulvic acid, inorganic anions, and natural water matrix inhibited the IBP degradation to varying degrees. Scavenging experiments of reactive oxygen species indicated that hydroxyl radical played a major role in the UV/ SPC degradation of IBP, while carbonate radical played a minor role.
