Abstract:Membrane fouling has become the one of main obstacles for the widespread application of membrane technology in water treatment processes. Coagulation as pretreatment is proven to be effective for the alleviation of membrane fouling. In this study, the influence of humic acid (HA)/sodium alginate (SA) fractions in the structure and resistance of cake layer on the membrane surface was investigated. The presence of SA at an appropriate fraction could facilitate the formation of large and loosely branched flocs and thereby form a more permeable cake layer on the membrane surface due to good bridging and charge neutralization abilities of SA molecules. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed for monitoring the dynamic formation process of cake layer under different HA/SA fractions. The cake layer with a higher thickness was observed to be rapidly formed on the membrane surface at the presence of SA in water. According to the theoretical analysis, the membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) combined system demonstrated to be highly dependent on the size and intra-porosity of flocs. The fractal dimension of flocs might have an impact on the resistance of cake layer through affecting the porosity of aggregated flocs. The SA molecules could be used as the coagulant aid for effective alleviation of membrane fouling and the improvement of filtration performance in a coagulation-UF combined system.

Abstract:Turbidity-causing particles and natural organic matter (NOM) in surface water are two major contributors to membrane fouling. This study focused on the effects of particles, NOM and particles-NOM contaminated raw water on membrane fouling in ultrafiltration (UF) and coagulation-UF process, respectively. The kaolinite solution and humic acid (HA) solution was used to simulate the particles and NOM contaminated raw water respectively in the laboratory experiments. It was found that pollutant constituents and concentration of raw water and pre-treatment process had an influence on membrane fouling. There was a linear relationship between the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of raw water and that of effluent in UF when HA-contaminated raw water was tested. The transmembrane pressure increase rate was in exponential relationship with raw water TOC. HA mainly contributed to the irreversible fouling, while kaolinite mainly brought the reversible fouling. It was verified that coagulation pre-treatment could postpone membrane fouling development in the limited range of coagulant dosage. Additionally, it was also found that combined fouling effects of particles and NOM were not the simple addition of the individual's effect.

Abstract:This study investigated the influence of different floc morphologies produced by micro-flocculation process on filtration of a self-constructed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. Aluminum sulfate was used as a flocculant and humic acid (HA) and kaolin as raw water. Both the properties of flocs formed during the micro-flocculation process (floc size and distribution, fractal dimension) and the effects of floc formation on membrane flux under different conditions were investigated. The surface morphology of the contaminated membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and adhesion between the PVDF membrane and organic pollutants was measured to analyze the membrane fouling mechanism. Results showed that the main mechanism during a micro-flocculation process using Al3+ as a flocculant is electrical neutralization to remove organic matter. With an increase in flocculant dosage, floc size increased and the fractal dimension of flocs decreased. The attenuation rate of membrane flux was negatively correlated with floc size. The larger the floc, the lower the membrane flux attenuation rate, and the looser the filter cake layer formed during the ultrafiltration process. Comparatively, membrane fouling caused by flocs with smaller fractal dimension was lighter, and the membrane flux recovery rate was also higher. The interaction force between PVDF and organic matter was positively correlated with the corresponding membrane flux attenuation rate during the initial stage of operation. When dosage of Al3+ was 5 mg·L-1 and initial pH was 7, the HA removal rate was 96.7%, the membrane flux attenuation rate was lowest, and the flux recovery rate reached 88%.

Abstract:Iron/aluminum mixed flocs were pre-deposited onto an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane surface to test their antifouling properties in the presence of humic acid (HA). Membranes modified with higher aluminum mole ratios in the mixture were more effective in controlling membrane fouling. Relatively strong adhesion was observed between the mixed flocs and the UF membrane used. The differences in the structure of the deposited layer were an important contributing factor for antifouling properties, which was significantly influenced by solution pH. Scanning electron microscopy showed that dense deposition layers were formed by small flocs at pH 6.0, while loose deposition layers were formed by large flocs at pH 8.0. Atomic force microscopy showed that the surface roughness of the deposition layer was much larger at pH 6.0 than that at pH 8.0. The corresponding positive charge of the mixed flocs was also higher at pH 6.0, resulting in stronger adsorption ability to the negatively charged HA molecules. These factors reduced the amount of HA getting to the membrane surface and thus helped increase membrane flux at lower pH values. In addition, HA molecules with various molecular weights were removed much faster at pH 6.0 than at pH 8.0.

Abstract:Severe ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling is always induced by humic acid (HA). However, little attention has been paid to the influence of inorganic salts, and even the studies related have been limited to only a single kind of salt. In addition, the concentration of the inorganic salts reported in previous studies is much high. Herein, the effect of HA on UF membrane performance was investigated in the presence of typical inorganic salts, with concentrations similar to those in natural waters or actually used in most current water plants. The results showed that membrane performance was influenced little by monovalent inorganic salts (NaCl and KCl), while divalent inorganic salts (CaCl2 and MgCl2) could exacerbate the membrane fouling. For trivalent inorganic salts (AlCl3·6H2O and FeCl3·6H2O), floc adsorption was the dominant HA removing mechanism, and AlCl3·6H2O behaved better than FeCl3·6H2O. Relating to the floc properties, severe membrane fouling occurred with low dosage, while it was mitigated with high dosage. Compared with the trivalent inorganic salts, more severe membrane fouling was caused by divalent inorganic salts. Additionally, little synergistic or inhibitory effect occurred with mixtures of divalent inorganic salts and trivalent inorganic salts. Furthermore, analysis with the classical fouling models showed that cake filtration was the main fouling mechanism with/without inorganic salts. Based on the findings, we believe these different HA behaviors exhibited during coagulation process with inorganic salts will have a large potential application in UF membrane fouling alleviation in water treatment.

Abstract:The integration of flocs with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes is a promising method to alleviate membrane fouling and reduce land use; however, the floc charge and related pollutant distribution mechanism in the floc-based layer, which are key issues in further improving membrane performance, have been given little attention up to this point. Herein, the UF membrane performance in the presence of differently charged floc layers and the corresponding humic acids (HA) distribution were investigated. The results indicated that the floc charge played an important role in UF membrane behavior due to the different HA distribution mechanisms. Owing to the electrostatic adsorption, most negatively charged HA molecules were relatively uniformly adsorbed inside the positively charged floc layer (pH < 8.5), and fewer HA molecules reached the membrane surface. The HA removal efficiency was as high as 92.5 ± 1.5% at a pH of 6, and the final J/J0 was 0.73. It has been shown that pore adsorption or blocking was mainly alleviated, and the proportion of the irreversible fouling was only 6.0 ± 2.4% at a pH of 6. In contrast, fewer HA molecules were intercepted inside the negatively charged floc layer (pH > 8.5), and they were mostly distributed at the top and bottom of the cake layer due to electrostatic repulsion. The HA removal efficiency significantly decreased to 32.4 ± 1.2%, while the final J/J0 increased to 0.78 at a pH of 9.5. Further experiments demonstrated that the cake-layer resistance was considerably alleviated, and the proportion of the reversible fouling was remarkably reduced to 49.5 ± 3.2% at a pH of 9.5. In addition, membrane fouling caused by large–molecular weight (MW) HA was easily alleviated by the positively charged floc layer, while that caused by small-MW HA was easily alleviated by the negatively charged one. These findings have significant potential applications in practical membrane-based treatments of drinking water.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration (UF) is one of the most promising technologies for surface water treatment, but severe membrane fouling is a significant obstacle for its widespread application. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) was used as a coagulant aid of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in a pre-coagulation process prior to UF to mitigate UF membrane fouling. The influence of SA addition on water treatment efficiency, flocs characteristics and membrane fouling were examined. Results showed that SA dosed after PAC improved coagulation and UF efficiency due to its bridge role and gel network formation. UV254 and DOC removal from UF effluent were over 97% and 70%, respectively, when SA dosage ≥0.3 mg/L. In addition, UF membrane normalized flux was improved from 0.19 to 0.47. The membrane fouling alleviating mechanism of SA application was the formation of a porous cake layer by flocs with looser structures. In addition, these flocs were much larger than membrane pores (flocs sizes >450 μm), which also alleviate pore blocking degree of UF membrane.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) and particles in source water are responsible for the majority of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling that occurs during drinking water treatment. This study was conducted to (1) understand the UF membrane fouling phenomena caused by NOM and turbidity-causing particles and (2) investigate the effect of coagulation pretreatment on the alleviation of membrane fouling. In this study, kaolinite and humic acid (HA) were used to simulate the particles and NOM present in source water. The results revealed that the particles contributed to reversible fouling due to cake layer formation on the membrane surface, but that could be effectively reduced by increasing the frequency of physical backwashing. The results of the molecular weight (MW) distribution measurements, resin fractionation, SEM and FTIR analyses showed that HA primarily contributed to irreversible fouling. Taken together, the results of this study imply that the particles and NOM compounds present in source water may have different fouling behavior, and that particles may mitigate the irreversible fouling caused by HA. The addition of coagulant can lead to a higher rate of removal of large-sized hydrophobic compounds. Coagulation pretreatment can improve membrane performance and postpone membrane fouling development effectively, as well as retard the implementation of membrane chemical cleaning.

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the fouling of a ceramic membrane by a mixture containing high concentrations of humic acid and colloidal silica during cross-flow ultrafiltration under various operating conditions. Two types of feed water were tested: feed water containing humic acid and feed water containing a mixture of humic acid and colloidal silica. The colloidal silica exacerbated the fouling, yielding lower fluxes (109–394 L m−2 h−1) compared to the humic acid feed water (205–850 L m−2 h−1), while the retentions were higher except for the highest cross-flow rate. For the humic acid feed water, the irreversible resistance prevails under the cross-flow rate of 5 L min−1. During the filtration of an organic–inorganic mixture, the reversible resistance due to the formation of a colloidal cake layer prevails under all operating conditions with an exception. The exception is the filtration of the organic–inorganic mixture of a 50 mg L−1 humic acid concentration which resulted in a lower flux than the one of a 150 mg L−1 humic acid concentration under 150 kPa and a cross-flow rate of 5 L min−1. Here, the irreversible fouling is unexpectedly overcome. This is unusual and occurs due to the low agglomeration at low concentrations of humic acid under a high cross-flow rate. Under lower transmembrane pressure and a moderate cross-flow rate, fouling can be mitigated, and relatively high fluxes are yielded with high retentions even in the presence of nanoparticles. In this way, colloidal silica influences the minimization of membrane fouling by organic humic acid contributing to the control of in-pore organic fouling.

Abstract:High-salinity organic wastewater usually consists of diverse highly concentrated ions such as Na+, Ca2+ and Al3+ etc., which may significantly influence the fouling propensity when membrane technique is employed for contaminants removal. The current work investigated the effects of high salinity especially high-concentration Na+, Ca2+ and Al3+ on UF fouling characteristics, where 2 M Na+ and 0.5–1.0 M Ca2+ or Al3+ were applied according to the general composition of high-salinity wastewater. The results demonstrated that the presence of high-concentration Na+ alone benefited the ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution, but posed adverse effects on the ultrafiltration of humic acid (HA) solution. Further addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ on the basis of Na+ was found to aggravate the development of BSA fouling. Such differentiated behaviors were further elucidated by the comprehensive fouling characterizations in terms of foulant properties, specific resistances, filtration modelling and fouling layer observations. Correlation analysis suggested that irreversible fouling had strong relationship with Al3+ addition, while reversible fouling seemed to be primarily influenced by foulant size. Meanwhile, membrane rejection in the presence of various salts remarkably decreased, which was negatively correlated with zeta potential. Consequently, this study should shed light on the membrane fouling formation for treating high-salinity organic wastewater using membrane techniques.

Abstract:The integration of adsorbents with ultrafiltration (UF) membranes is a promising method for alleviating membrane fouling and reducing land use. However, adsorbents typically are only injected into the membrane tank once, resulting in a single dynamic protection layer and low removal efficiency over long-term operation. In addition, the granular adsorbents used can cause membrane surface damage. To overcome these disadvantages, we injected inexpensive and loose aluminum (Al)-based flocs directly into a membrane tank with bottom aeration in the presence of humic acid (HA) or raw water taken from the Miyun Reservoir (Beijing, China). Results showed that the flocs were well suspended in the membrane tank, and multiple dynamic floc protection layers were formed (sandwich-like) on the membrane surface with multiple batch injections. Higher frequency floc injections resulted in better floc utilization efficiency and less severe membrane fouling. With continuous injection, acid solutions demonstrated better performance in removing HA molecules, especially those with small molecular weight, and in alleviating membrane fouling compared with the use of high aeration rate or polyacrylamide injection. This was attributed to the small particle size, large specific surface area, and high zeta potential of the flocs. Additionally, excellent UF membrane performance was exhibited by reservoir water with continuous injection and acid solution. Based on the outstanding UF membrane performance, this innovative integrated filtration with loose Al-based flocs has great application potential for water treatment.

Abstract:In membrane-based water and wastewater treatment processes, understanding the interactive effect of various types of organic components on membrane fouling is crucial in order to identify effective fouling mitigation strategies. In this study, the effect of humic acid on alginate filtration was examined under both dead-end and crossflow constant flux microfiltration conditions using low viscosity and medium viscosity alginate as model foulants. The presence of humic acid (100 mg/L) appeared to accelerate alginate fouling under both dead-end and crossflow filtration conditions, following cake layer filtration mechanism (dead-end) and a combined intermittent pore blocking and cake layer filtration mechanism (crossflow) respectively. Under the crossflow filtration condition, the fouling mechanism of the alginate-humic acid mixture was dependent with the permeate flux and alginate nature, e.g., less pore blocking with more cake layer fouling were present at a higher permeate flux during filtration medium viscosity alginate-humic acid mixture. When intermittent relaxation was employed during crossflow filtration, the presence of humic acid could alleviate medium viscosity alginate fouling. This was attributed by a significant shift of irreversible fouling to reversible cake layer fouling, which was readily removed by shear force during relaxation. A comparison of membrane performance during intermittent filtration with periodical flushing using clean water, NaClO (5%), and persulfate (100 mg/L) at 50 degrees C indicates that high temperature clean water flushing was effective in maintaining membrane performance during filtrating alginate-humic acid complex, which majorly contributed to a reduction of reversible cake layer fouling.

Abstract:In this study, the effects of UV/chlorine pretreatment on ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling derived from different fractions of natural organic matter (NOM) were studied and compared. Three model organic compounds including humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were employed to represent different NOM fractions in natural surface water. The results suggest that membrane fouling induced from HA, SA and HA-SA-BSA mixture could be effectively mitigated by UV/chlorine pretreatment, which could be further improved by increasing the chlorine dose. Although UV irradiation alone severely aggravated BSA fouling, the addition of chlorine (0.0625 mM) to the pretreatment process could effectively avoid the fouling. The alleviation of membrane fouling is primarily ascribed to the reduction of molecular weight (MW) of organic compounds, and the decomposition of unsaturated organic species, thereby reducing the accumulation of organics on the membrane surface and pores. This is confirmed by the reduction of UV254 and fluorescent components in the feed solution and the increase of DOC in the permeate after UV/chlorine pretreatment. Membrane fouling during the filtration of untreated HA, SA, and HA-SA-BSA mixture was occupied by cake filtration and intermediate pore blocking, while UV/chlorine pretreatment led to the exacerbation of pore blocking at the initial filtration stage. The initial fouling mechanism of untreated BSA was mainly governed by complete blocking, which shifted to intermediate pore blocking after UV/chlorine pretreatment.

Abstract:This study systematically investigates the organic fouling behavior of a superhydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane functionalized via post-fabrication tethering of surface-tailored silica nanoparticles to poly(methacrylic acid)-grafted PVDF membrane surface. Sodium alginate (SA), Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as model organic foulants to investigate the antifouling behavior of the superhydrophilic membrane with combined-fouling (mixture of foulants) and individual-fouling (single foulant) tests. A membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant supernatant was also used to verify the organic antifouling property of the superhydrophilic membrane under realistic conditions. Foulant size distributions and foulant–membrane interfacial forces were measured to interpret the observed membrane fouling behavior. Molecular weight cutoff measurements confirmed that membrane functionalization did not adversely affect the intrinsic membrane selectivity. Both filtration tests with the synthetic foulant-mixture solution (containing SA, SRNOM, and BSA) and MBR plant supernatant demonstrated the reliability and durability of the antifouling property of the superhydrophilic membrane. The conspicuous reduction in foulant–membrane interfacial forces for the functionalized membrane further verified the antifouling properties of the superhydrophilic membrane, suggesting great potential for applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The combined fouling during ultrafiltration (UF) of surface water pretreated to different extents was investigated to disclose the roles of polysaccharides, proteins, and inorganic particles in UF membrane fouling. Both reversible and irreversible fouling decreased with enhanced pretreatment (biologically active carbon (BAC) treatment and sand filtration). The sand filter effluent fouled the membrane very slowly. The UF membrane removed turbidity to less than 0.1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU), reduced polysaccharides by 25.4%–29.9%, but rejected few proteins. Both polysaccharides and inorganic particles were detected on the fouled membranes, but inorganic particles could be effectively removed by backwashing. The increase of turbidity in the sand filter effluent to 3.05 NTU did not significantly increase the fouling rate, but an increase in the turbidity in the BAC effluent to 6.11 NTU increased the fouling rate by more than 100%. The results demonstrated that the polysaccharide, not the protein, constituents of biopolymers were responsible for membrane fouling. Membrane fouling was closely associated with a small fraction of polysaccharides in the feed water. Inorganic particles exacerbated membrane fouling only when the concentration of fouling–inducing polysaccharides in the feed water was relatively high. The combined fouling was largely reversible, and polysaccharides were the predominant substances responsible for irreversible fouling.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration is widely employed in treating high-salinity organic wastewater for the purpose of retaining particulates, microbes and macromolecules etc. In general, high-salinity wastewater contains diverse types of saline ions at fairly high concentration, which may significantly change foulant properties and subsequent fouling propensity during ultrafiltration. This study filled a knowledge gap by investigating polysaccharide fouling formation affected by various high saline environments, where 2 mol/L Na+ and 0.5–1.0 mol/L Ca2+/Al3+ were employed and the synergistic influences of Na+-Ca2+ and Na+-Al3+ were further unveiled. The results demonstrated that the synergistic influence of Na+-Ca2+ strikingly enlarged the alginate size due to the bridging effects of Ca2+ via binding with carboxyl groups in alginate chains. As compared with pure alginate, the involvement of Na+ aggravated alginate fouling formation, while the subsequent addition of Ca2+ or Al3+ on the basis of Na+ mitigated fouling development. The coexistence of Na+-Ca2+ led to alginate fouling formed mostly in a loose and reversible pattern, accompanied by significant cracks appearing on the cake layer. In contrast, the fouling layer formed by alginate-Na+-Al3+ seemed to be much denser, leading to severer irreversible fouling formation. Notably, the membrane rejection under various high salinity conditions was seriously weakened. Consequently, the current study offered in-depth insights into the development of polysaccharide-associated fouling during ultrafiltration of high-salinity organic wastewater.

Abstract:One of the critical issues for the widely application of ultrafiltration (UF) in water treatment is membrane fouling owning to the dissolved organic matter. The aim of the present study is to explore the effect of various particle sizes caused by low dosages of coagulant with dissolved organic matter on the UF membrane performance. Aluminum chloride was added to the synthetic water with the hydrophobic humic acid (HA), the hydrophilic bovine serum albumin (BSA) – a protein- and their 1:1 (mass ratio) mixture. The results showed that there was a critical dose of Al that could cause dramatic flux reduction by blocking the membrane pores after coagulating with HA/BSA. For HA or BSA, the critical dose of Al was relatively lower at pH 6.0 than that at pH 8.0. After coagulation, the flux decline caused by HA was slightly varied as a function of pH while that caused by BSA was greatly affected by pH. The flux decline caused by the 1:1 (mass ratio) HA/BSA mixture after coagulation was similar to that caused by HA after coagulation because BSA could be encapsulated by HA. In addition, the peak value of the molecular weight (MW) distribution of HA coagulated with Al was changed more drastically compared to that of BSA after filtration.
Interplay of organic components in membrane fouling evolution: Statistical evidence from multiple spectroscopic analyses

Abstract:Membrane fouling is a complex process that can be caused by multiple organic foulants such as polysaccharides, proteins and humic substances. The key mechanisms, especially interactions between coexisting foulant components, have yet to be well understood. This study proposes a combination of spectral and statistical methods to unravel the interactive role of typical organic foulants during microfiltration, taking bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA) as examples. Results show that the membrane effluent spectra (ultraviolet absorption, fluorescence and circular dichroism) can differentiate the state of foulant interception at the pore adsorption/blocking stage (BSA and HA actively involved) and gel/cake layer stage (SA dominant). Multivariate redundancy analysis revealed interrelations between the spectral characteristics of the effluent and surface fouling layer. Accumulation of proteins and polysaccharides in the fouling layer was detected by infrared spectroscopy while that of humics was more sensitively reflected by Raman spectroscopy, as confirmed by nonnegative linear least square fitting of time-series spectral data during fouling evolution. A variance partitioning analysis nested in multiple linear regression of the infrared or Raman signals offered further statistical evidence for the interplay of organic components by quantifying the single/double/triple-component contributions to the total fouling response. It revealed that ternary BSA × HA × SA interplay is prominent at the initial pore adsorption/blocking stage whereas binary HA × SA interplay prevails at the later gel/cake layer stage. Such role shifting of foulant interactions during the fouling process might provide useful information for a more accurate understanding and control of fouling. The combined spectral and statistical methods, which can effectively trace inter-component relations and link molecular fingerprints to fouling behavior, are particularly promising for exploring fouling mechanisms in complex systems.
