Abstract:The discharge of organic pollutants poses a serious threat to public health and the environment. Developing new strategies and materials to remove organic pollutants from water efficiently and completely is of great importance. Herein, a SnS2-modified porous -cyclodextrin-containing polymer (SnS2@PCDP), which was derived by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of the hydroxyl groups of both -CD and SnS2-OH by tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile, was prepared for the rapid, complete removal of organic pollutants from water . The porous structure and well-defined cavities of -CD endow SnS2@PCDP with a facile and high adsorption capacity, and the modification with SnS2 leads to simultaneous adsorption and photodegradation processes for the rapid and complete removal of organic pollutants. In addition, SnS2@PCDP can be regenerated several times using light irradiation with no loss in performance. Overall, the efficient removal performance and excellent reusability indicate that SnS2@PCDP has potential for practical applications in the efficient treatment of organic pollutants.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to study reverse solute flux (RSF) from osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR) and consequent solute buildup in the feed side. A polyelectrolyte (PAA-Na) served as a draw solute (DS) to minimize RSF in OMBRs. In addition, a bioelectrochemical system (BES) was employed to drive accumulated cations from the feed/anode side into the cathode compartment, subsequently achieving PAA-Na DS recovery with the aid of high catholyte pH. Compared to the 1 M NH4HCO3 DS, the 0.48 g mL(-1) PAA-Na DS produced consistently stable water flux, enhanced water recovery and increased ammonium removal efficiency. Due to a dynamic balance between PAA removal and continuing RSF, the residual PAA concentration was 72 mg L-1. on the feed side (27.0% of TOC). These results demonstrate the advantages of integrating a PAA-Na DS with a BES to mitigate RSF and to support further development of OMBR technology.
Mitigation Of Membrane Fouling Using An Electroactive Polyether Sulfone Membrane

Abstract:Membrane fouling is the bottleneck limiting the wide application of membrane processes. Herein, we adopted an electroactive polyether sulfone (PES) membrane capable of mitigating fouling by various negatively charged foulants. To evaluate anti-fouling performance and the underlying mechanism of this electroactive PES membrane, three types of model foulants were selected rationally (e.g., bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate (SA) as non-migratory foulants, yeast as a proliferative foulant and emulsified oil as a spreadable foulant). Water flux and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency in the filtering process of various foulants were tested under an electric field. Results suggest that under electrochemical assistance, the electroactive PES membrane has an enhanced anti-fouling efficacy. Furthermore, a low electrical field was also effective in mitigating the membrane fouling caused by a mixture of various foulants (containing BSA, SA, yeast and emulsified oil). This result can be attributed to the presence of electrostatic repulsion, which keeps foulants away from the membrane surface. Thereby it hinders the formation of a cake layer and mitigates membrane pore blocking. This work implies that an electrochemical control might provide a promising way to mitigate membrane fouling.

Abstract:A key challenge for osmotic membrane bioreactors (OMBRs) application is reverse solute flux and consequent salt accumulation in the feed side. Herein, a bioelectrochemical system (BES) was employed to drive reverse-fluxed solutes from the feed of an OMBR into a cathode compartment for recovery and subsequent reuse as a draw solute (DS). Compared to an OMBR without BES function, the present OMBR system enhanced water recovery from 925 to 1688 mL and increased the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency from 40.2 ± 8.1 to 75.2 ± 3.3%, benefited from its lower anolyte conductivity of 9.0 mS cm-1 than that of the control system (24.1 mS cm-1). The CO2 addition significantly improved the ammonia recovery rate to 93.3-116.7 g N m-3 h-1 (or 248.0-307.4 g N m-2 d-1), 12.1-14.5 times higher than that without CO2 addition. The recovered DS was successfully applied to accomplish water extraction in the reuse test, and such a recovery/reuse process could result in a normalized water recovery of 3870 mL mol DS-1 or a DS usage of 0.26 mol L-1 (of the recovered water). The energy consumption of the system might be compensated by the production of bioenergy, and the net specific energy consumption was estimated to be 0.004-0.112 kWh m-3 wastewater, 0.007-0.179 kWh kg-1 removed COD, or 0.001-0.020 kWh kg-1 recovered NH4+-N. Those results have demonstrated that bioelectrochemical processes can be an effective approach for in situ mitigation of reverse-fluxed solute in OMBR and recovering "the lost DS" towards both reuse and reduced operational expense.
Evaluating Ionic Organic Draw Solutes in Osmotic Membrane Bioreactors for Water Reuse

Abstract:The performance of two ionic organic draw solutes, namely sodium acetate (NaOAc) and ethylene-diamine-tetra acetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na), during osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR) operation was investigated in this study. Their performance was compared to that of sodium chloride (NaCl). A reverse osmosis (RO) process was integrated with OMBR to form an OMBR-RO hybrid system for draw solute recovery and clean water production. Results show that the NaOAc and EDTA-2Na draw solutes significantly reduced salinity build-up in the bioreactor in comparison with NaCl during OMBR operation. At the same osmotic pressure, these two ionic organic draw solutions produced slightly lower water flux, but considerably less reverse salt flux than NaCl. Compared to NaCl and NaOAc, EDTA-2Na resulted in significantly less fouling to the forward osmosis membrane. Regardless of the draw solutes, the OMBR-RO hybrid system could remove all 31 trace organic contaminants investigated in this study by more than 97%. Results reported here suggest that ionic organic draw solutes can be used to mitigate salinity build-up in the bioreactor during OMBR operation.

Abstract:Polymeric membranes have garnered widespread adoption in applications such as desalination, wastewater treatment, and water reuse. Nevertheless, the current disposal practices for these end-of-life (EoL) polymeric membranes, primarily landfill and incineration, are neither economically nor environmentally sustainable. To address this challenge, we first analyzed the factors leading to the EoL phase for these membranes; an understanding that is critical in developing or selecting appropriate recycling technologies. We further proposed a technological framework to guide recycling choices based on the specific state of the EoL membrane. In cases where the membrane exhibits significant breakage, dissolution using eco-friendly solvents, followed by membrane re-preparation, is recommended. For membranes without substantial breakage, regeneration, upcycling, or downcycling strategies can be deployed based on scenarios. We underscored the crucial role of irrecoverable foulant removal within the regeneration technology. Additionally, the reaction interface must be suitably remediated before the application of upcycling technology to EoL microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes. The downcycling strategy, facilitated by NaOCl oxidation, is readily applicable to EoL nanofiltration/reverse osmosis membranes. This brief frontier review aims to serve as a valuable reference for recycling end-of-life water treatment polymeric membranes.

Abstract:Recently, thermo-responsive nonionic amphiphilic copolymers have shown a great potential as forward osmosis (FO) draw solutes for high-salinity water desalination and zero-liquid discharge (ZLD). However, the relationship between the copolymer structural properties and key characteristics as draw solutes, as well as copolymer's chemical stability after regeneration have not been much studied. In this work, we systematically investigated poly (ethylene oxide)-block-poly (propylene oxide)-block-poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) copolymers as draw solute. The results showed that the PEO segments significantly influenced the viscosity, osmotic pressure and lowest phase separation temperature of the copolymer aqueous solutions. Among four commercial copolymers studied, Pluronic® L35 with moderate molecular weight (Mn 1,900 Da), 50% PEO, and relatively high hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) showed the best draw solution (DS) performance. It also showed great stability in physiochemical properties and draw capacity after more than ten cycles of regeneration. On the other hand, despite the fact that membrane fouling was observed due to the use of copolymer DS, the FO flux (∼1.2 L m‒2 h‒1, as similar with the virgin membrane) was not affected when high-salinity feedwater such as seawater RO brine was applied. Overall, our study has provided a more comprehensive understanding on the characteristics of nonionic amphiphilic copolymer DS and showcased the promise of copolymer-driven FO process in high-salinity water desalination and ZLD.
Enhancing the Performance of a Bioelectrochemically Assisted Osmotic Membrane Bioreactor Based on Reverse Diffusion of Organic and Buffering Draw Solutes

Abstract:By combining the merits of bioelectrochemical systems and osmotic membrane bioreactors (OMBRs), bioelectrochemically assisted OMBRs (BEA-OMBRs) can achieve simultaneous water/electricity recovery and salinity mitigation. One of the key challenges is reverse solute flux (RSF). The "negative effect" of RSF was turned into a "beneficial effect" by using a reverse-fluxed draw solute (DS) as a buffering agent or a carbon source supplement. The reverse-fluxed anions from the alkaline buffering DSs (NaHCO3 and PBS) stabilized the anolyte pH and had a positive effect on system performance, such as a high total Coulomb of 278.16-289.80C, a high recovered water of 261.64-277.80 mL, and a high COD removal of 90.91-91.61%. The reverse-fluxed cations from the acidic buffering DS (NH4Cl) promoted the accumulated ammonium to diffuse from the feed/anode to the cathode side due to the production of ammonia gas in the alkaline catholyte. The organic DS exhibited a lower RSF and a lower anolyte conductivity of 5.12-8.49 mS cm(-1). However, the reverse-fluxed organic DSs (glucose and NaOAc) had a negative effect on the electricity generation due to carbon source competition. These results have demonstrated the advantages of the reverse-fluxed DS to enhance the system performance and to encourage further development of BEA-OMBR technology.
Deciphering mono/multivalent draw solute-induced microbial ecology and membrane fouling in anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactor

Abstract:Anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactor (AnOMBR) attracted attention due to high quality effluent production with low energy demand, and draw solute has significant effect on the system performance. However, the mutual relationship between draw solute-induced salinity accumulation and microbial community had many unknown questions to be solved. This study purpose was to construct two AnOMBR to compare the impact of draw solutes of NaCl and MgCl2 on the dynamic change of microbial ecology and membrane fouling. The result indicated that the draw solute of MgCl2 caused less salinity and more membrane biofouling than that of the draw solute NaCl. Multiple microbiological analysis methods were applied to discover keystone species related to the conductivity change and membrane fouling, especially for the MgCl2-AnOMBR system. It was found that draw solute NaCl could benefit the growth of Proteobacteria to become the most abundant phylum to affect the membrane fouling, while Mg2+ introduction could stimulate the growth of NS9, Hydrogenphilaceae and Pedosphaeraceae to potentially cause the biofouling. Furthermore, phylogenetic molecular ecological networks (pMENs) deeply analyzed the microbial structure difference under Na+ and Mg2+ introduction, and indicated that the family Lentimicrobiaceae and Candidatus_Kaiserbacteria were the keystone species in NaCl-AnOMBR, while two genus Anaerolinea and SWB02, and two families Saprospiraceae and NS9 were discovered to have key effect in MgCl2-AnOMBR due to their strong extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production ability for survival of other microorganisms. This study was significant to give microbial targets under the impact of various draw solutes, as the reference for the engineers to further investigate how to improve the microbial structure to enhance AnOMBR performance and inhibit the membrane biofouling.

Application of Polysaccharide Derivatives As Novel Draw Solutes in Forward Osmosis for Desalination and Protein Concentration

Abstract:In this study, a series of anionic polyelectrolytes, sodium carboxymethyl dextrans with different molecular weights (CM-dextran-1000/5000/20,000), are facilely prepared via a one-step reaction and applied as novel draw solutes in forward osmosis (FO) process. Various characterizations (FTIR, NMR, conductivity titration and cytotoxicity test) are performed to investigate the chemical structure, degree of substitution (DS) and toxicity of synthesized CM-dextrans. Effects of the solution concentration and solute molecular weight on physicochemical properties (relative viscosity, conductivity and osmotic pressure) of CM-dextran draw solutions as well as their corresponding FO performances are investigated systematically. In comparison with FO performance of 1 M NaCl draw solution (water flux of 22.1 LMH; reverse solute flux of 9.8 gMH), 40 wt% CM-dextran-1000 draw solution shows a higher water flux (24.9 LMH) and a much lower reverse solute flux (0.97 gMH) in PRO mode. Furthermore, CM-dextran solution with the low reverse solute diffusion, nontoxicity, and the high osmotic pressure, can be potentially used as draw solution for desalination and protein enrichment via FO. The theoretical calculation also confirms that FO process shows lower special energy consumption than OF process in the application of protein concentration. Enhanced sequestration of large-sized dissolved organic micropollutants in polymeric membranes incorporated with mesoporous carbon

Abstract:Efficient removal of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a challenge in advanced water/wastewater treatment, especially for high-molecular-weight polar or charged contaminants. Herein, we report a novel type of self-supported hybrid poly(vinylidene fluoride, PVDF) membrane incorporated with mesoporous carbon. It is fabricated via a simple organic-inorganic mixture and phase inversion process, in which the mesoporous carbon is used as an inorganic additive (up to 40 wt%) for the manipulation of polymeric pore structure and distribution, porosity, thickness, surface area and fouling characteristics. The hybrid membrane combines easy scaleup of polymers and large adsorption capacity of the mesoporous carbon. It possesses high surface areas (up to 550 m(2) g(-1)), three-dimensionally interpenetrating porous structures, improved mechanical strength and chemical property, and favorable water flux (43 to 32 L m(-2) h(-1)). The membrane with 25 wt% of mesoporous carbon shows the best separation performance for large-molecular-sized microcystin-LR (M-w = 995) and Rhodamine B (M-w = 479) (3.8 and 14.8 mg g(-1), respectively). Moreover, the complementary properties allow the hybrid membrane be regenerated conveniently and reused with steady cyclic performance. This membrane-forming procedure demonstrates a trade-off relationship of thermodynamics versus kinetics. It is also affected simultaneously by particle-polymer interactions on the micron-sized interfaces during the phase inversion. Results suggest a promising route toward hybrid membranes for efficient sequestration of large-molecules of dissolved organic pollutants.
Effects of Surfactant Addition to Draw Solution on the Performance of Osmotic Membrane Bioreactor

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of surfactant addition to the draw solution on the performance of osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR). Forward osmosis (FO) tests were conducted with the addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), a representative surfactant, to both inorganic and ionic organic draw solutions, including sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium acetate (NaOAc), and sodium propionate (NaPro), to determine the desirable draw solution for OMBR operation. Results show that SDBS impacts were more notable for inorganic draw solution in comparison to its ionic organic counterparts at the same osmotic pressure (60 bar) in FO operation. In specific, SDBS addition up to 5 mM considerably reduced the reverse diffusion of NaCl draw solute (approximately 69.7%) with insignificant impact on water flux. Thus, salinity build-up in the bioreactor could be effectively mitigated when SDBS was added to the NaCl draw solution in OMBR operation. This mitigation led to stable sludge characteristics and biological treatment to sustain OMBR performance regarding water production (approximately 10 L/m(2)h) and contaminant removal (e.g. over 90% for pharmaceutically active compounds).
Biomimetic Hydrophilization Engineering on Membrane Surface for Highly-Efficient Water Purification

Abstract:The polymeric membrane has been widely used for wastewater remediation due to its low energy consumption and benign mechanical properties. Its inherent hydrophobicity leads to non-ideal performances during energy-/environmental-related processes, the surface manipulation strategies towards much hydrophilicity are urgently to be developed for practical usages. Herein, a biomimetic coating is realized on porous membrane surface for surface hydrophilization via facilely combining mussel-inspired chemistry with polyphenol-based surface engineering. The as-deposited eco-friendly biomimetic coating greatly enhanced membrane hydrophilicity, infiltration, and antifouling potential via one-step co-depositing dopamine and plant-derived tannic acid. As a demonstration, water remediations of oil-in-water emulsion and simulated protein wastewater were conducted, leading to highly-efficient separation performances and antifouling potential. The initial flux of modified microfiltration membrane for the cycling oil-in-water emulsion separation could reach ca. 2100 L m(-2)h(-1) with oil rejection of > 99.6%; the corresponding ultrafiltration membrane exhibited benign protein interception performance (BSA rejection of 93% with water flux of 490 L m(-2) h(-1)) and antifouling ability (80% enhancement). Most importantly, the novel modified membrane demonstrates the ultra-stability under harsh bending and leaching tests. The facile biomimetic surface hydrophilization engineering will greatly power the membrane-based water environment remediation and stimulate the rapid advances in control release, anti-corrosion coating and other fields highly depending on surface properties.

Abstract:Developing an inexpensive green method for preparing membranes is crucial to reduce the cost of electrodialysis (ED). Introducing cationic functional groups into the main polymer chain of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) is a common approach for modifying AEM materials, despite involving complex chemical processes. This study employs various cationic surfactants as functional materials, PVP as a hydrophilic agent, and polyether sulfone as the skeleton material to prepare AEMs using a simple procedure. The evaluated cationic surfactants have identical quaternary ammonium groups but different lengths of hydrophobic alkyl chains. The internal structures of the resulting AEMs are regulated by the compounding effects between the PVP and surfactants with distinct alkyl chains. The prepared AEMs were integrated into an ED system to evaluate their performance in the (i) desalination of brackish water, (ii) desalination of salt solutions containing organic matter, and (iii) removal of phenol from phenolic solutions. All AEMs exhibited good membrane-forming properties, although that prepared with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride as the functional material achieved the best overall performance. Overall, this report describes a simple and green method for preparing AEMs that can efficiently separate salts from organic solutions.

Abstract:The selection of proper draw solution is crucial to guarantee a high-performance FO process with minimal reverse solute flux and easy draw solution recovery. In this study, a polyelectrolyte salt-poly (4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) sodium (P(SSA-co-MA)-Na), was applied as draw solutes in FO process. The effects of the chemical structure, osmotic pressure, viscosity of the draw solution and the resulted FO performance are investigated systematically. Because of the high osmotic pressure of the solution and the large molecular size, P(SSA-co-MA)-Na exhibits a higher water flux and a lower salt leakage as compared with polyacrylic acid sodium salts (PAA-Na) and poly (sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS-Na). Especially, a high water flux of about 15LMH and a significantly lower solute leakage of about 0.04gMH can be generated with 0.25g/ml P(SSA-co-MA)-Na draw solution and deionized water as the feed solution under PRO mode. The potential of P(SSA-co-MA)-Na draw solution is further evaluated for water recovery from the dye-containing wastewater via FO process. In addition, the diluted P(SSA-co-MA)-Na can also be regenerated by nanofiltration (NF) system. The overall performance proves that P(SSA-co-MA)-Na as draw solute in FO process is applicable.
Construction of Solvent Resistance O‐PASS @ UiO‐66‐NH 2 / O‐PASS Composite Membrane for Methylene Blue Removal

Abstract:The purification of dye wastewater plays a critical role in water pollution treatment. Adsorption is a cheap and effective separation technology but is limited by the reuse of adsorption materials. Ultrafiltration membranes have a relatively high flux but their pores are too large to reject small dye molecules. In this study, negatively charged oxidized poly (arylene sulfide sulfone) (O-PASS) membrane, NMP pretreatment oxidized O-PASS (N-O-PASS) membrane, and O-PASS@UiO-66-NH2/O-PASS composite membranes were fabricated to retain cationic methylene blue (MB) from wastewater by combining ultrafiltration and adsorption techniques. The increased porosity of the N-O-PASS membrane provides more available adsorption sites for an equilibrium MB adsorption amount of 22.5 (mg g(-1)) and 100% rejection in the first 10 min during ultrafiltration with a pure water flux of 162.32 (L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)). Due to the enhanced hydrophilicity and separating property by deposited UiO-66-NH2 particles and PASS resin, O-PASS@UiO-66-NH2/O-PASS composite membrane shows a flux of 170.32 (L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) and a 100% MB rejection in 60 min with great reusability. The O-PASS@UiO-66-NH2/O-PASS composite membrane is a new promising membrane for the removal of dyes from wastewater. Meanwhile, the superior solvent resistance endows it great adaptability in wide applications, especially in harsh conditions.
Sustainable operation of osmotic microbial fuel cells through effective reproduction of polyelectrolyte draw solutes facilitated by cathodic pH increase

Abstract:Osmotic microbial fuel cells (OsMFCs) take advantages of synergy between forward osmosis (FO) and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for simultaneous wastewater treatment, bioenergy production, and water recovery. A unique feature for healthy operation of OsMFCs is an appropriate draw solute (DS) that can also act as a catholyte. Herein, polyelectrolytes (polyacrylic acid sodium salts, PAA-Na) was investigated as a DS/catholyte and reproduced with the aid of the high catholyte pH. Such a reproduction method is innovative, because it turns a drawback (high catholyte pH) into a useful resource, thereby reducing the demand for external input and leading to a clean production process. The results have showed that the OsMFC achieved a current density of 159 +/- 6 A m(-3), water flux of 12.7 +/- 0.2 LMH, and low reverse salt flux of 0.05 +/- 0.00 gMH with 32 wt% PAA-Na (2000 Da) as the DS. The DS recovery efficiency could be as high as 99.86 +/- 0.04%, and the reproduced DS was successfully applied in the subsequent operation. With this reproduction method, the highest total operation cost was estimated at 0.104 $ m(-3). Those results have demonstrated a new approach based on pH-dependent PAA DS reproduction towards further development of OsMFC technology for sustainable water/wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Bioadhesion-inspired Surface Engineering Constructing Robust, Hydrophilic Membranes for Highly-Efficient Wastewater Remediation

Abstract:The membrane separation technique can strongly advance the energy-efficient water remediation due to its low cost and small footprint. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of most polymeric membrane materials limits the water-treatment efficiency, which urgently requires to develop surface hydrophilization engineering on hydrophobic polymeric membranes. Inspired by the structure/function characteristics of robust mussel/tunicate adhesive proteins, a one-step, eco-friendly, and cost-effective biomimetic coating system was designed and utilized to realize membrane surface hydrophilization via the intermolecular "amino/mercapto-pyrogallol bridges". The as-coated poly(vinylidene fluoride) micro-/ultra-filtration (MF/UF) membranes exhibited greatly enhanced wettability, good harsh condition tolerance, high filtration efficiency, and excellent fouling resistance. Both of emulsified oily and simulated protein wastewater were remediated accordingly. The optimal MF membrane demonstrated a pure water flux as high as ca. 7900 L m(-2) h(-1) (47 times higher regarding the pristine membrane), and oil rejection efficiency beyond ca. 99.5% during the cycling emulsion filtration tests. The coated OF membrane possessed a benign protein interception efficiency (BSA rejection of ca. 95.4% with water flux of ca. 400.7 L m(-2) h(-1)) and greatly enhanced fouling resistance (78.0% increment). The new biomimetic synergistic coating strategy can promote the rapid development of advanced membranes via elegant surface manipulation towards water-energy nexus.
Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole in Low-C/n Ratio Wastewater by a Novel Membrane Bioelectrochemical Reactor.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) pollution in wastewater threatens public health. A novel membrane bioelectrochemical reactor (MBER) with loop operation was developed for SMX degradation in low-C/N ratio wastewater. A gas-permeable silicone membrane module was used to precisely control the dissolved oxygen in the catholyte and save energy. Compared with a traditional membrane bioreactor (i.e., open-circuit reactor), the removal of SMX was increased from 49.91% to 71.10% in the proposed MBER (i.e., closed-circuit reactor). Sequencing analyses revealed that SMX was removed via cometabolism with NH4+-N and COD removal in both the anode and cathode chambers. Six intermediates were detected as degradation products in the cathodic effluent; these intermediates pose a similar potential threat to the environment as SMX. Two possible degradation pathways, deduced from the sequencing analyses and degradation products, were proposed. These results provide a new technology for improving SMX removal through the integration/coupling of bioelectrochemical technology into a membrane bioreactor.
