Abstract:A free-end comb-like hollow fiber membrane bioreactor was applied to treat wastewater. The results clearly showed that membrane fouling, defined as permeate flux decline, was greatly influenced by membrane module configuration. The permeate flux decline was much less for module b, demonstrating the superiority of module b over module a. Its permeate flux could be maintained in the range of 4.0 to 8.0 L x (m2 x h)(-1) under the operating conditions that temperature was 22-26 degrees C, the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration was 7500-10500 mg/L, aeration intensity was 200 L/h, suction time/ suspended time ratio was 9 min/1 min and suction pressure was 0.02 MPa. As this novel kind of membrane module resulted in high air scouring efficiency, relatively low aeration intensity was needed for the MBR maintenance. In addition, the permeate flux varied a little when suction time/ suspended time ratio changed from 12 min/1 min to 6 min/1 min. The performances of several different cleaning methods were tested and the results indicated that water cleaning + chemical cleaning + ethanol soaking had the best cleaning efficiency. SEM images clearly showed that the membrane surface became cleaner and the membrane holes became more visible after water cleaning + chemical cleaning, compared with water cleaning solely.
An A/O submerged membrane bioreactor and its membrane fouling research in treating bathing wastewater

Abstract:A membrane bioreactor (MBR) process was used to, treat the bathing wastewater from Tongji University and the effluent was reclaimed to supply the water body of University. The influent LAS, Turbidity, BOD5, COD, SS, T-N and T-P averaged at 7, 110, 50, 108, 160, 36 and 0.6 mg/L respectively. The final treated effluent LAS, Turbidity, BOD5, COD, SS, T-N and T-P for the same period averaged 0.2, 0.4, 2, 15, 0, 6 and 0.02 mg/L respectively. The operating results of the process demonstrate that the MBR process is both effective and efficient in meeting the water discharge and reuse quality requirements (GB/T 18921-2002). Membrane fouling was analyzed by trans-membrane pressure (TMP), and floc size of sludge. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) was used to analyze the microbial community structure on the surface of membrane in order to study the biofouling of membrane of MBR. The results indicated that the biofilm formation induced the membrane fouling and that some specific phylogenetic group of bacteria, the Pseudomonas sp., Ochrobactrum anthropi. sp. and Enterobacter sp., probably played a major role in the development of the biofilms, which led to the severe irreversible membrane biofouling.
Impact of Bubbly Flow in Feed Channel of Forward Osmosis for Wastewater Treatment: Flux Performance and Biofouling

Abstract:In this study, the effect of bubbly flow on the performance of water flux of forward osmosis (FO) membranes was investigated, in terms of membrane biofouling causing by treating wastewater under a lower flow rate operation (cross flow velocity=0.04m/s) in feed channel. It was found that water flux exhibited a better performance through bubbly flow (aeration rate=0.4L/min) in the feed channel compared to that under single-phase flow. After a 20-circle operation, the period of time required for collecting a total of 7000ml water under bubbly flow condition was approximately half (17d) of that under single-phase flow (36d). Water flux dropped from 11.0 to 4.5LMH with the presence of air bubbles, and to 2.0LMH in the absence of air bubbles in the feed channel. In addition, it was found that the biofilm under bubbly flow condition was more homogeneous than that under single-phase flow. This finding has suggested that shear stress created by the bubbly flow has affected total biomass loading. Analysis of the characteristics of the fouling layer indicated that the fouling layer was composed of bacterial cells surrounded by scaling-like foulant, protein, polysaccharide, humic-like substances and inorganic particulates. The biofilms exhibited the dissimilarity of certain bacterial populations in the absence and presence of air bubbles. Larger molecular weight humic-like substances and inorganic particulates were present in the biofilm under single-phase flow condition. Results from this work indicated that bubbly flow condition within the feed channel can lead to intense tangential flow and uniform shear stress distribution on the vicinity of the membrane surface, and reduce the accumulation of biofoulants with higher molecular weight.

Abstract:Fouling control strategies play a crucial role in membrane distillation (MD) process, primarily due to the significant limitation of fouling during the scaling-up process. The utilization of microbubbles (MBs) aeration has exhibited promising potential in mitigating membrane fouling when treating high salinity wastewater. Aeration can introduce gas-liquid two-phase flow on the membrane surface, thereby increasing the membrane surface shear force. The mechanism of aeration technology for controlling fouling includes the following points: introduction of gas-liquid two-phase flow; physical substitution of concentration polarization layer; pressure pulses caused by bubbles flowing through the membrane surface and increasement of the cross flow velocity. This research aims to optimizing the effect of air MBs with different concentrations and sizes introduced in the feed side on membrane fouling control, we creatively used the method of releasing pressure gradiently to achieve size regulation of MBs within a certain range for the first time, firstly regulated the generation of MBs by manipulating gas flow rate and release pressure. Under the optimal condition of 40 mL/min and 0.6 MPa, it will yield concentration of 1.58 × 10 4 /mL and D50 Sauter size of 64.69 μm MBs with pure water permeance flux of 12.32 kg/(m 2 ·h). It was observed that higher gas flow rates primarily increased MBs concentration, while lower pressures predominantly reduced MBs size through the method of inline imaging. Experimental results indicated that introduction of MBs can slightly improve the temperature polarization coefficient and mass transfer coefficient under different operating modes. Consequently, further investigations focused on the influence of MBs characteristics on different fouling control. All conditions reach 99 % rejection for inorganic salt and HA. This study provided empirical evidence that higher concentration and larger size of MBs intensify the gas-liquid two-phase flow disruption and exhibit a better shear effect on scaling phenomena, which yield advantageous outcomes in terms of augmenting permeance flux and water vapor production, with permeance flux increased from 40.12 % to 55.42 % for inorganic fouling and increased from 68.35 % to 80.15 % for inorganic and HA fouling. These results were confirmed via membrane surface using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. In summary, this research aided in identifying appropriate operating conditions for mitigating inorganic and composite scaling by implementing air-infused MBs in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD), which provides scientific and technical guidance for controlling fouling in MD in practical applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the influences of air bubbling mode, air flow rate, air bubble size and feed water quality on the membrane fouling of immersed hollow-fiber (HF) membrane for ultrafiltration of river water were investigated. The membrane was operated in the intermittent suction mode of 9min on/1min off. The results showed that continuous air bubbling was more effective for mitigating membrane fouling than intermittent bubbling (1min on/9min off in the study) at the same air flow rates of 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5m3/m2h, respectively. Furthermore, an optimum air flow rate was observed for immersed HF membrane system when considering the alleviating effect on membrane fouling and energy consumption simultaneously, with the optimum value determined as 5.0m3/m2h in this investigation. It was also found that the smaller the air bubble was (4dia of 3.5, 5.0, 6.5, and 8.0mm were investigated), the more effective the air bubbling would be for mitigating the membrane fouling of immersed HF membrane. However, even if air bubbling was performed, eliminating membrane foulants from the feed water before ultrafiltration was still necessary for the reduction of membrane fouling.

Abstract:In current work, bubbly flow was applied to control membrane fouling in photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) under different aeration rate. The fine particles of TiO2 (d(0.5) = 1.75 mu m) in combination with natural organic matter (NOM) in suspended solutions were employed to conduct membrane fouling experiments in a submerged hollow fiber membrane tank The results revealed that bubbly flow was an efficient approach to mitigate membrane fouling, leading to a rapidly decreasing fouling rate (dTMP/dt) (0.0908-0.0069 kPa/min) with the aeration increase. Additionally, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were implemented to calculated shear stress distribution on the spatial point of the membrane surface. Based on the detailed CFD simulation results, it was observed that the mean shear stress (0.505-2.111 Pa) increased rapidly with the increase of air flow rate (0-3.2 L/min). Furthermore, the forces exerted on the fine particles were analyzed in terms of calculated shear stress. It was quantitatively demonstfated that the streaming particles were prone to deposit on the vicinity of the layer and the particles deposited on the layer cannot be removed by hydrodynamics forces. It is expected that this study would be basis for further improvement of hydrodynamic condition design induced by bubbly flow in PMRs. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Impacts of micron-sized aeration bubble on sludge properties and hydraulic dynamics in relation to membrane fouling alleviation

Abstract:This investigation elucidates the influence of micron-scale aeration bubbles on the improvement of anti-fouling characteristics within submerged membrane bioreactors (sMBRs). A systematic examination of sludge properties, hydraulic dynamics, and fouling tendencies revealed that the application of microbubble aeration, specifically at dimensions of 100 μm, 80 μm, and 30 μm, significantly reduced sludge electrostatic repulsion and augmented particle size distribution, as opposed to the utilization of coarse bubble aeration of 1 mm. Notably, the employment of 100 μm bubbles achieved a significant reduction in the proportion of smaller particles (<10 μm) and sludge viscosity, thereby facilitating a more homogenous and vigorous turbulence at the membrane interface. These optimized conditions were instrumental in the substantial reduction of membrane fouling, which was corroborated by the diminished rate of fouling, reduced resistance accumulation, and lesser foulant deposition. The investigation identified sludge particle size, turbulent kinetic energy, and shear stress as the predominant factors influencing the development of membrane fouling. The findings underscore the pronounced advantages of employing 100 μm-sized bubbles in aeration strategies, providing enhanced understanding for the optimization of aeration parameters to improve sMBR efficiency and maintenance.

Improved Ultrafiltration Performance Through Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite Pretreatment: Effects of Water Matrices and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.

Abstract:A pilot scale self-forming dynamic membrane bioreactor (SFDMBR) was used for municipal wastewater treatment and its fouling control was investigated. Two methods, on-line bottom aeration flushing and off-line high-pressure water flushing, were applied to control the self-forming dynamic membrane (SFDM) fouling. Aeration intensity of 22 m 3 /(m 2 ·h) and aeration time of 2 min were the optimized operational conditions. Fouling of SFDM could be on-line controlled by bottom aeration flushing to keep the bioreactor continuously working for about 50 days. However, the intervals of bottom aeration flushing were gradually shortened which suggested that fouling could be controlled to some extent but gel layer could not be removed effectively. High-pressure water flushing could remove cake layer and most gel layer, and the membrane flux could be almost 100% recovered. Through the convenient fouling control by combination of bottom aeration and high-pressure water flushing, the present SFDMBR has been normally operated for more than one year and the effluent was suitable for urban miscellaneous water consumption if disinfection was added.

Abstract:Direct membrane filtration (DMF) technology achieves energy self-sufficiency through carbon recovery and utilization from municipal wastewater. To control its severe membrane fouling and improve DMF technology, targeted research on fouling behaviour and mechanisms is essential. In this study, a DMF reactor equipped with a flat-sheet ceramic membrane was conducted under three scenarios: without control, with intermittent aeration, and with periodic backwash. This system achieved efficient carbon concentration with chemical oxygen demand below 50 mg/L in permeate. Membrane fouling was dominated by intermediate blocking and cake filtration. And reversible external resistance accounted for over 85 % of total resistance. Predominant membrane foulants were free proteins, whose deposition underlies the attachment of cells and biopolymers. Backwash decreased the fouling rate and increased fouling layer porosity by indiscriminately detaching foulants from the membrane surface. While aeration enhanced the back transport of large particles and microbial activity, causing a relatively thin and dense fouling layer containing more microorganisms and β-d-glucopyranose polysaccharides, which implies a higher biofouling potential during long-term operation. In addition, aeration combined with backwash enhanced fouling control fivefold over either one alone. Therefore, simultaneous operation of backwash and other mechanical methods that can provide shear without stimulating aerobic microbial activity is a preferred strategy for minimizing membrane fouling during DMF of municipal wastewater.

Abstract:The practical applications of water treatment techniques based on hydrophobic aeration membrane are limited due to membrane pores blocking. Various studies have revealed that both biofilm and microbial secretion can exacerbate membrane fouling. Recently, we constructed a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) system for treating micro-polluted surface water in order to identify the primary cause for oxygen transfer rate (OTR) decline. It was found that microbial secretion had a more prominent negative effect than that caused by biofilm, as manifested by the fact the effect of microbial secretion (66.49%) was greater than the resistance of biofilm (38.83%). Fouling decreased the total pore volume of all membrane. The peak location of adsorption capacity was more likely to occur at smaller pore sizes with longer running time. Notably, continuous fluorescence distribution between the separating layer and pores like finger in MABR system exhibited an increasing trend with the operation time, indicating a gradual increase of microbial viability. Core protein structure was revealed by different bond peaks (0–90 d). Specifically, for different organic components of EPS, the hydrophilic HIS was the main content, while the mass transfer resistance caused by the gel increased, which reduced the contact angle and increased the bubble point pressure. Therefore, effects of EPS content and composition should be considered during the application of water treatment techniques based on MABR.

Abstract:Forward osmosis (FO) membrane fouling is a big obstacle in real textile wastewater treatment. Herein, a series of pretreatments include coagulation (C), microbubbles (Mbs) and their combination process (Mbs + C) were used to alleviate membrane fouling. Their different effects on flux and rejection rate of FO membrane were also investigated. Satisfactory removal efficiencies for UV254, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and antimony (Sb) of 48.27, 47.80, 40.70 and 41.87% were obtained at the optimum polyaluminum chloride (PAC) dosage of 300 mg L−1 and combined treatment time of 15 min. Compared with C alone, combined Mbs + C resulted in smaller flux decrease (~40%) and higher rejection rate (>98%) of FO membrane. This result confirmed the positive effect of Mbs on the combined processes. Fluorescence excitation-emission matrices coupled with parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) measurements were further carried out to investigate the mitigation effect of pretreatments on membrane fouling. Results exhibited Mbs + C can significantly remove tryptophan-like substance and aliphatic alcohols due to enhanced coagulation-floatation property and oxidation of hydroxyl radicals. This study provides useful insights for fouling mitigation through Mbs and coagulation in actual FO process when dealing with textile wastewater.

In Situ Ozonation to Control Ceramic Membrane Fouling in Drinking Water Treatment

Abstract:The effectiveness of ozonation was investigated in the aspect of in situ control of the membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. A compacted system with a scale of 120m3/d was built by integrating coagulation, ozonation and ceramic membrane into one tank. A flat-sheet ceramic membrane with a pore size of 60nm was selected. The quantity of foulants was measured in terms of total organic carbon and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The properties of organic fouling were characterized with hydrophobicity and specific ultraviolet absorbance. The results showed that membrane fouling was alleviated through in situ ozonation with ozone dosages of 2.0~2.5mg/L; the membrane working cycle time could be doubled under the tested conditions. However, the membrane fouling accumulated gradually with DOC as the major foulants. The in situ ozonation may have transformed organic molecules into smaller ones and derived more carboxylic groups, thus made them to be more hydrophilic during the oxidation process. It was concluded that ozonation had happened inside the membrane pores, leading to the change of the molecular structures of the organics. It is believed that in situ ozonation is of substantial significance in the improvement of ultrafiltration for drinking water treatment.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation on fouling and cleaning of a tubular microfiltration membrane for municipal wastewater reclamation. A bi-level complex model, namely channel clogging and pore plugging, was introduced to elucidate the fouling mechanism. Based on 135 days of microfiltration of activated sludge, a preventive method for channel clogging was reasonably proposed and proven to be effective. Without channel clogging, the operation period was observed a five-fold increase on average, reaching 3-4 weeks. To remove pore plugging, a multi-step chemical cleaning was employed and further optimized in terms of temperature and alkaline concentration. Generally, the chemical cleaning could restore the membrane permeability to higher than 90%.
Insights into the alleviation of membrane fouling in AGMBR through thermal/Fe 2+ -activated persulfate pre-oxidation: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactors (AGMBRs) are a viable option for municipal sewage reuse; however, the issue of membrane fouling remains a significant obstacle to overcome to achieve large-scale implementation. Therefore, a novel thermal/Fe 2+ /persulfate (PDS) system was proposed to investigate its alleviation effect on membrane fouling in AGMBR. The findings indicated that the thermal/Fe 2+ /PDS system demonstrated superior efficacy in eliminating pollutants from raw sewage. Radical scavenging experiments demonstrated that sulfate radicals and coagulation were the primary contributors to mitigating membrane fouling in the thermal/Fe 2+ /PDS system, effectively reducing fouling resistance and retarding the decline in membrane flux. Analysis of interfacial interaction energy indicated that increasing the electrostatic double-layer repulsion between foulant–membrane and foulant–foulant could mitigate membrane fouling. Additionally, the interfacial characteristics (membrane surface morphology and foulant content) of the fouled membranes were characterized to further validate the efficacy of this system in alleviating membrane fouling. The correlation analysis revealed a positive association between the mitigation of membrane fouling and the substantial elimination of various pollutants, such as chemical oxygen demand, polysaccharides, and suspended solids. This study highlights the exceptional performance of the thermal/Fe 2+ /PDS system and provides novel insights into alleviating AGMBR membrane fouling.

Abstract:This study proposed and applied an innovative heat/powdered activated carbon (PAC)/persulfate (PS) pre-treatment system for the first time in an aerobic granular sludge–membrane system (AGSMS). We examined the effects of the heat/PAC/PS system on membrane fouling mitigation and contaminant removal and qualitatively evaluated the contribution of adsorption and oxidation to membrane fouling control. Compared to other pre-treatment systems, the heat/PAC/PS system could enhance the removal of pollutants, reduce fouling resistance, and delay the decline of permeation flux, resulting in low foulant content on the membrane surface and formation of a loose and porous cake layer. According to radical scavenging experiments, the excellent heat/PAC/PS system pre-treatment performance was attributed to the PAC adsorption capacity and non-radical oxidation pathway. Thermal synergy played a significant role in promoting adsorption and oxidation abilities. The extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory indicated that the high-energy barrier in the heat/PAC/PS system was an important factor in inhibiting the adhesion of foulants to the membrane surface. Furthermore, the correlation analysis suggested that membrane fouling control should focus on the removal of chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids. This study provides a new approach for membrane fouling mitigation through AGSMS in municipal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, the membrane filtration process was proposed as a post-treatment process to treat the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) effluent. The flat-sheet membrane modules were submerged into the UASB reactor to retain the suspended solids in the UASB effluent under intermittent permeation and air sparging conditions. The results indicated that intermittent permeation enhanced the sustainability of the submerged membrane and an idle time of 4 min with a 10-min filtration was optimal for reducing membrane fouling under the experimental conditions. Air sparging could also alleviate membrane fouling, and the lowest transmembrane pressure (TMP) change rate (dTMP/dt) was achieved at the moderate aeration rate of 2 L/min. It appears to be effective to alleviate membrane fouling and achieve high effluent production at a flux of 25 L/m2 h and an idle time of 4 min with a 10-min filtration considering the energy consumption.
Effective Biofouling Control Using Periodic H2O2 Cleaning with CuO Modified and Polypropylene Spacers

Abstract:Feed spacer biofouling is a major challenge in membrane processes such as nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. The bubbling of gas using air can be effective in partially controlling biofouling, but additional chemical control is still needed, and pressurized air systems can be difficult to integrate into existing systems. A simpler approach that combines both bubbling and cleaning was developed here on the basis of intermittently adding a low concentration hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to the feedwater. With periodic dosing (every 12 h) of 0.3% (w/w) H2O2, no detectable biofouling occurred after 10 days of operation, while biofouling was evident without H2O2 dosing. A single dose of 0.3% (w/w) H2O2 to prefouled spacers and membranes rapidly reduced biofouling, with decreased feed channel differential pressures of 69% (CuO spacer) and 54% (polypropylene spacer). The control of biofouling mainly resulted from bubble production when H2O2 dissociated to shear biofilms off the spacers. Using a CuO spacer did not impact biofouling, suggesting that additional cleaning based on hydroxyl radical formation via Fenton-reaction was not necessary. The use of H2O2 alone had the combined advantages of physically shearing off biofilms from spacers and chemically killing bacteria, while providing a low cost approach for biofouling control in membrane-based desalination processes.

Improvement of Membrane Filterability of the Mixed Liquor in a Membrane Bioreactor by Ozonation

Abstract:The main problem preventing the widespread use of membrane bioreactors (MBR) for wastewater treatment is membrane fouling. In this study, we proposed ozonation as a new method for controlling membrane fouling in MBR. Through a batch test, we found that membrane filterability of the mixed liquor was improved by ozonation with a dosage less than 0.7 mg/g-SS. In a further experiment, an ozonation-coupled MBR and a conventional MBR were run for over 30 days twice, which confirmed the long-term effectiveness of ozone on fouling control. Chemical oxygen demand and ammonia removals in the ozonation-coupled MBR were not affected by ozonation. From the batch test, effects of varying ozone dosages on the mixed liquor properties were measured. When the dosage was less than 0.7 mg/g-SS, extra-cellular polymeric substances were reduced, leading to a slight increase of supernatant organic concentration and more hydrophobic flocs' surface. Moreover, the zeta-potential of colloids was simultaneously decreased. Enhanced hydrophobicity of the flocs' surface and decreased zeta-potential of colloids provided a beneficial condition for re-flocculation among bioflocs. After the ozonated mixed liquor was aerated, the flocs re-flocculated. Floc size increased while supernatant organic concentration decreased. These were responsible for improved membrane filterability of the mixed liquor by ozonation.
