Abstract:Two dimensional conjugated polymers have emerged as excellent polymer donor components in recent years. Here, all-polymer solar cells based on two conjugated side-chain isolated polythiophene derivatives (PT4TV and PT4TV-C) as donors and perylene diimide (PDI)-based polymer (PPDI-DTT) as acceptor are fabricated and investigated in detail. The structure similarity of the two polymers provides more insightful structure-property relationships. PT4TV based device displays a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.99%, higher than that of PT4TV-C based device (0.55%). The high fill factor of larger than 50% in PT4TV based device is ascribed to the balanced hole and electron mobility of the donor and the acceptor. By adding chloronaphthalene solvent in PT4TV: PPDI-DTT solution, the PCE of PT4TV based solar cells is enhanced to 1.17%. Such improvement is interpreted in terms of the refined morphology of the film and ideality factor of the solar cell diode. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Side-Chain-Promoted Benzodithiophene-based Conjugated Polymers Toward Striking Enhancement of Photovoltaic Properties for Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:In this work, we have reported a highly efficient photovoltaic material, PBDTTz-SBP, by fine-tuning the side chains of the benzodithiophene (BDT) unit. With the replacement of alkoxy chains with alkylthio chains, a large increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) was realized. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs) without any post-treatment generate an optimal PCE of up to 12.09%, with a high VOC of 0.914 V, JSC of 18.52 mA cm-2, and fill factor of 71.43%. Notably, the efficiency of a PBDTTz-SBP-based solar cell was about 1.31-fold of the PCE (9.20%) of its counterpart based on the polymer, PBDTTz-BP, with alkoxy chains, indicating the striking modulation effect of side-chain engineering. Although VOC and JSC were lower than those of non-fullerene devices, the PSCs with PC71BM as the acceptor exhibited a fairly high fill factor of up to 76.69%, affording a moderate PCE. Our work reported a highly efficient polymer solar cell with a PCE of 12.09% and clearly demonstrated the great tuning effect of alkylthio chains on photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Solution-processed bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs) are indispensable in photovoltaics. -Conjugated donor-acceptor copolymers as electron donors have become the cornerstone as the most intensively studied topic in this field. Thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) is one of the most commonly used electron-withdrawing moieties. Based on TPD, a new building block, 1,3-bis(thieno[3,4-b]thiophen-6-yl)-4H-thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6(5H)-dione (TBTT), is designed and a novel low-bandgap TPD-copolymer is developed with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 7.5% with a low open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.633 V when utilizing PC71BM as electron acceptor. To promote the performance of TBTT-based polymers, four conjugated copolymers are designed and synthesized based on TBTT and benzodithiophene (BDT) building blocks by regulating their steric hindrance with side alkyl chains on BDT moiety. PSCs based on polymer P4 with an additional n-hexyl side chain blended with PC71BM deliver a high PCE of 9.1% with a V-oc of 0.78 V increased by 24%, which is among the highest in TPD-based polymers. The study provides new insights into the molecular design and synthesis of high-performance photovoltaic materials.
Two-Dimensional Bdt-Based Wide Band Gap Polymer Donor for Efficient Non-Fullerene Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:In this paper, to study the two-dimensional (2D) conjugated side chain effect on the polymer donor for the non-fullerene polymer solar cells (NFPSCs), the thiophenothiophene (TT) side-chained benzodithio-phene (BDT) and bithiophene copolymer (PBDTDT-TT) has been prepared by the Stille coupling reaction and compared with the copolymer (PBDTDTO) with an alkoxy side group and the same polymer backbone. The 2D conjugated polymer PBDTDT-TT exhibits better thermal stability and wider and red-shifted ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra. These two copolymers were used as the donor materials blended with a new non-fullerene receptor ITM, successfully fabricating the positive devices with an ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:ITM/PFN-Br/Al structure. Compared with the PBDTDT-O:ITM blend film, the PBDTDT-TT:ITM blend film shows a lower LUMO energy level, a narrower optical band gap, and a higher electron and hole mobility in the devices. The best power conversion efficiency (PCE) is 8.43% for the PBDTDT-TT polymer, while the PCE for the PBDTDT-O polymer is <1%. Extending the conjugated plane through the 2D conjugated side chain can help the PBDTDT-TT-based PSC devices show higher exciton dissociation efficiencies of 85.36% [compared with that of PBDTDT-O-based device (13.12%)] and thereby enhance the photovoltaic performance of the NFPSCs.
Improving the Performance of Polymer Solar Cells by Altering Polymer Side Chains and Optimizing Film Morphologies

Abstract:Two donor–acceptor (D–A) type conjugated polymers using dodecyl- and ethylhexyl-thiophene substituted benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT-DDT and BDT-EHT, respectively) as donors and n-alkylthieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) as acceptor were synthesized and characterized. The thiophene substituted BDT unit was recognized as a two-dimensional (2D) π-extended segment with high carrier mobility and TPD unit was a relatively strong electron-drawing acceptor, which could lead to deep-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of the polymers. The optical properties, electrochemical behavior, and charge carrier properties of the polymers were compared in parallel. The results indicated that ethylhexyl-substitution could optimize the polymer structures and properties. The bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the two polymers were fabricated and characterized. The devices based on ethylhexyl-substituted polymer showed better performance than that of dodecyl-substituted one. Further analysis proved that the improvement was mainly ascribed to the formation of well-defined nanostructures by using branched ethylhexyl side chains, which facilitated charge separation and transport in the bicontinous active layer. This study suggests that obtaining appropriate film morphology and phase separation by altering alkyl side chains is extraordinary important for high performance PSCs based on D–A type polymers.

Abstract:With their rapid development in recent years, organic solar cells hold the exciting potential to be a ground-breaking form of solar harvesting technology. Among these, all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) stand out owing to various advantages such as complementary absorption and superior stability. However, the advance of all-PSCs has been greatly impeded by energy level mismatches and unfavorable morphology of the active layer. Here, we report a molecular engineering approach featuring asymmetrical 4-methoxythiophene/ thiophene as conjugated side chains of the donor polymer to fine-tune the energy level alignment and phase separation. The corresponding polymer, namely, poly{4-[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-methoxythiophen-2-yl]-8-[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b: 4,5-b']dithiophene}-alt-[bis(5-thiophene-2-yl)-5,6-difluoro-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-4,7-diyl] (PMOT32) exhibited a power conversion efficiency that exceeded 8.5% in all-PSCs with poly{[N, N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenedicarboximide-2,6-diyl]- alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} (N2200) as the acceptor. PMOT32: N2200 also maintained good photovoltaic performance when processed as a thick film or from non-halogenated solvents. Detailed comparisons with two other polymers with pure thiophene or 4-methoxythiophene as their side chains revealed how these side chains affected the photovoltaic performance via energy level alignment and phase separation.

Abstract:Although high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) have already been demonstrated in conventional structure polymer solar cells (PSCs), the development of high performance inverted structure polymer solar cells is still lagging behind despite their demonstrated superior stability and feasibility for roll-to-roll processing. To address this challenge, a detailed study of solution-processed, inverted-structure PSCs based on the blends of a low bandgap polymer, poly(indacenodithiophene-co-phananthrene-quinoxaline) (PIDT-PhanQ) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layer is carried out. Comprehensive characterization and optical modeling of the resulting devices is performed to understand the effect of device geometry on photovoltaic performance. Excellent device performance can be achieved by optimizing the optical field distribution and spatial profiles of excitons generation within the active layer in different device configurations. In the inverted structure, because the peak of the excitons generation is located farther away from the electron-collecting electrode, a higher blending ratio of fullerene is required to provide higher electron mobility in the BHJ for achieving good device performance.

Abstract:A novel polythiophene derivative, PBT1, was designed, synthesized, and applied in polymer solar cells (PSCs). This work provides a successful example of using molecular structure as a tool to realize optimal photovoltaic performance with high polymer content, thus enabling the realization of efficient photoabsorption in very thin films. As a result, an efficiency of 6.88% was recorded in a PSC with a 75 nm active layer.
A Novel Wide Bandgap Conjugated Polymer (2.0 Ev) Based on Bithiazole for High Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:An efficient wide bandgap conjugated polymer (PTZ6) based on alkoxylphenyl substituted benzodithiophene as donor unit and bithiazole as acceptor unit was developed for polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer exhibited a wide bandgap of 2.0eV with strong absorption in the range of 300–620nm, and a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of −5.36eV. The PSCs based on PTZ6: PC71BM show a PCE of 8.1% with a Voc of 0.96V, a Jsc of 10.9mAcm−2 and a high FF of 76.7%, which is among the highest values for the fullerene PSCs based on conjugated polymer donors with bandgap near to 2.0eV. Moreover, for this blend system, the photovoltaic performance of the devices changes little when the active layer thickness increases from 90nm to 220nm. More importantly, the non-fullerene PSCs based on PTZ6: ITIC exhibit a PCE of 10.3% with a high Voc of 1.01V, which should be the best value for the non-fullerene PSCs with the Eloss less than 0.6eV to date. Our results indicate that PTZ6 is a promising wide bandgap polymer donor for the photovoltaic application in PSCs.
A wide-bandgap conjugated polymer for highly efficient inverted single and tandem polymer solar cells

Abstract:We synthesized a wide-bandgap conjugated polymer (named PTZ1) based on thienyl-substituted benzodithiophene as the donor unit and thiazolothiazole as the acceptor unit for photovoltaic applications. The polymer exhibits a desirable broad bandgap of 1.97 eV with the maximum absorption edge of 630 nm, a deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of -5.31 eV and a relatively high hole mobility of 3.86 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Consequently, single junction PSCs based on PTZ1 exhibit outstanding performance with a PCE of 7.7% and a high V-oc of 0.94 V, which are among the highest values for PSCs based on conjugated polymers with a broad bandgap near to 2.0 eV. The excellent performance is attributed to the high polymer crystallinity, favorable backbone orientation and continuous interpenetrating network in blend films. The tandem PSCs based on PTZ1 as the donor material in the front cell exhibited a high PCE of 10.3% with a Voc of 1.65 V.

Abstract:A new wide-band-gap conjugated polymer PBODT was successfully synthesized that showed high crystallinity and was utilized as, the active material in nonfullerene bulk-heterojunction, polymer solar cells (PSCs). The photovoltaic devices based on the as-cast blend films of PBODT with ITIC and IDIC acceptors showed notable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 7.06% and 9:09%, with high open-circuit voltages of 1.00 and 0.93 V that correspond to low energy losses of 0.59 and 0.69 eV, respectively. In the case of PBODT:ITIC, lower exciton quenching efficiency and monomolecular recombination are found for devices with small driving force. On the other hand, the relatively higher driving force and suppressed monomolecular recombination for PBODT:IDIC devices are identified to be the reason for their higher short-circuit current density (J(sc)) and higher PCEs. In addition, when processed with the nonchlorinated solvent 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, a good, PCE of 8.19% was still, achieved for the IDIC-based device. Our work shows that such wide-band-gap polymers have great potential for the environmentally friendly fabrication of highly efficient PSCs.
Highly Efficient Polymer Tandem Cells and Semitransparent Cells for Solar Energy

Abstract:Highly efficient tandem and semitransparent (ST) polymer solar cells utilizing the same donor polymer blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as active layers are demonstrated. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.5% and a record high open‐circuit voltage of 1.71 V are achieved for a tandem cell based on a medium bandgap polymer poly(indacenodithiophene‐co‐phananthrene‐quinoxaline) (PIDT‐phanQ). In addition, this approach can also be applied to a low bandgap polymer poly[2,6‐(4,4‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b;3,4‐b′]dithiophene)‐alt‐4,7‐(5‐fluoro‐2,1,3‐benzothia‐diazole)] (PCPDTFBT), and PCEs up to 7.9% are achieved. Due to the very thin total active layer thickness, a highly efficient ST tandem cell based on PIDT‐phanQ exhibits a high PCE of 7.4%, which is the highest value reported to date for a ST solar cell. The ST device also possesses a desirable average visible transmittance (≈40%) and an excellent color rendering index (≈100), permitting its use in power‐generating window applications.
High-Performance Ternary Polymer Solar Cells from A Structurally Similar Polymer Alloy

Abstract:High-efficiency ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) are fabricated by using two donor polymers (PBDTTPD and PBDTTT-C-T) with similar polymer backbones and complementary absorption and PC71BM as the acceptor. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.3% is achieved with a high short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 17.2 mA cm(-2). The enhanced J(sc) and PCEs are mainly attributed to the broadened photoresponse of the ternary blend. Good miscibility of the two donor polymers is found due to the similar polymer main chains, leading to the desired morphology between the donors and PC71BM in the ternary blends. The trend of open-circuit voltage (V-oc) variations indicates the formation of a polymer alloy in this ternary blend. Our work demonstrates that using two donor polymers with similar backbone structures is a rational strategy for realizing high-performance ternary PSCs.
From Semi- to Full-Two-Dimensional Conjugated Side-Chain Design: A Way Toward Comprehensive Solar Energy Absorption

Abstract:Two polymers with fully two-dimensional (2D) conjugated side chains, 2D-PTB-Th and 2D-PTB-TTh, were synthesized and characterized through simultaneously integrating the 2D-TT and the 2D-BDT monomers onto the polymer backbone. Resulting from the synergistic effect from the conjugated side chains on both monomers, the two polymers showed remarkably efficient absorption of the sunlight and improved π–π intermolecular interactions for efficient charge carrier transport. The optimized bulk heterojunction device based on 2D-PTB-Th and PC71BM shows a higher PCE of 9.13% compared to PTB7-Th with a PCE of 8.26%, which corresponds to an approximately 10% improvement in solar energy conversion. The fully 2D-conjugated side-chain concept reported here developed a new molecular design strategy for polymer materials with enhanced sunlight absorption and efficient solar energy conversion.
A Novel Benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-Based Conjugated Polymer with a Pendant Diketopyrrolopyrrole Unit for High-Performance Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel conjugated polymer of PBDT-TDPP-S was synthesized, which contains a donor unit of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene in main chain and an acceptor unit of diketopyrrolopyrrole in side chain. This kind of side-chain donor-acceptor (D-A) polymer exhibited better solution processability, lower HOMO level (-5.34 eV), and more balanced carrier mobility relative to its corresponding main-chain D-A conjugated polymers. Using PBDT-TDPP-S as electron donor and [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptor, the resulting polymer solar cells exhibited outstanding photovoltaic properties with a power conversion efficiency of 4.89%, an open-circuit voltage of 0.84 V, a short-circuit current of 10.04 mA cm(-2), and a fill factor of 56.0%.
Optimized Molecular Packing and Non-radiative Energy Loss Based on Terpolymer Methodology Combining Two Asymmetric Segments for High-Performance Polymer Solar Cells.

Abstract:In this work, a random terpolymer methodology combining two electron-rich units, asymmetric thienobenzodithiophene (TBD) and thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran segments, is systematically investigated. The synergetic effect is embodied on the molecular packing and nanophase when copolymerized with 1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione, producing an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.2% in IT-4F-based NF-PSCs, which outperformed the corresponding D-A copolymers. The balanced aggregation and better interpenetrating network of the TBD50:IT-4F blend film can lead to mixing region exciton splitting and suppress carrier recombination, along with high yields of long-lived carriers. Moreover, the broad applicability of terpolymer methodology is successfully validated in most electron-deficient systems. Especially, the TBD50/Y6-based device exhibits a high PCE of 15.0% with a small energy loss (0.52 eV) enabled by the low nonradiative energy loss (0.22 eV), which are among the best values reported for polymers without using benzodithiophene unit to date. These results demonstrate an outstanding terpolymer approach with backbone engineering to raise the hope of achieving even higher PCEs and to enrich organic photovoltaic materials reservoir.
High-performance Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency over 18% Enabled by Asymmetric Side Chain Engineering of Non-Fullerene Acceptors

Abstract:Side-chain engineering has been considered as one of the most promising strategies to optimize non-fullerene small-molecule acceptors (NFSMAs). Previous efforts were focused on the optimization of alkyl-chain length, shape, and branching sites. In this work, we propose that asymmetric side-chain engineering can effectively tune the properties of NFSMAs and improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) for binary non-fullerene polymer solar cells (NFPSCs). Specifically, by introducing asymmetric side chains into the central core, both of the absorption spectra and molecule orientation of NFSMAs are efficiently tuned. When blended with polymer donor PM6, NFPSCs with EH-HD-4F (2-ethylhexyl and 2-hexyldecyl side chains) demonstrate a champion PCE of 18.38% with a short-circuit current density (JSC) of 27.48 mA cm−2, an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.84 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.79. Further studies manifest that the proper asymmetric side chains in NFSMAs could induce more favorable face-on molecule orientation, enhance carrier mobilities, balance charge transport, and reduce recombination losses.
High-Performance Semi-Transparent Polymer Solar Cells Possessing Tandem Structures

Abstract:In this study we employed tandem device architectures to tune the external appearance and light-conversion properties of polymer solar cells (PSCs) from visibly transparent to semi-transparent, making them more versatile for integrated photovoltaic applications and more efficient under solar illumination. Our best transparent solar cell was a tandem PSC exhibiting an efficiency of 6.4% and a maximum transmission of 51% at 550 nm; in contrast, a semi-transparent tandem PSC having an average transmission of 30% in the visible range exhibited an efficiency greater than 7%.
A Carbonylated Terthiophene-Based Twisted Polymer for Efficient Ternary Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:In polymer solar cells (PSCs), it is difficult for twisted conjugated polymers to achieve high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) as donors due to their low charge carrier mobilities and poor bulk heterojunction morphologies. In this work, a new twisted conjugated polymer (P3TCO-1) with excellent solubilities (above 30 mg mL-1 ) in common organic solvents at room temperature is reported. UV-visible absorption spectra and cyclic voltammetry indicate that P3TCO-1 has a wide optical bandgap of 1.90 eV and deep HOMO level of -5.39 eV. In binary PSCs, P3TCO-1:ITIC-based device shows a PCE of 10.11%, with JSC of 17.05 mA cm-2 and FF of 62.89%; P3TCO-1:PC71 BM-based device gives a PCE of 6.67% with JSC of 12.31 mA cm-2 and FF of 58.00%. When the two acceptors of ITIC and PC71 BM are combined, the twisted P3TCO-1-based ternary PSCs exhibit a significantly boosted PCE of up to 11.41%, with a simultaneously improved JSC of 18.16 mA cm-2 and FF of 66.78%. These results can guide the improvement of PCE for twisted conjugated polymer-based PSCs.

Abstract:The performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is commonly improved using additives or annealing treatment. However, these processes are accompanied by disadvantages, including poor reproducibility and stability. Herein, a molecular design strategy is proposed to obtain additive- and annealing-free PSCs. IDTOT2F containing two alkoxyl side chains at the central unit of the nonfullerene acceptor IDTT2F was developed. This molecular design results in excellent solubility in solutions, ordered molecular packing in films, slightly elevated energy levels, and a higher film absorption coefficient. Compared with its counterpart IDTT2F, its improved solubility provides an active layer with better morphology, its ordered molecular packing enhances the charge mobility in blend films, and its slightly elevated energy level furnishes a higher open-circuit voltage of devices. As a result, IDTOT2F-based devices display a maximum power conversion efficiency of 12.79%, which is one of the highest values reported for a PSC fabricated without any extra treatment.
