Abstract:Highly transparent zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire networks have been used as the active material in thin film transistors (TFTs) and complementary inverter devices. A systematic study on a range of networks of variable density and TFT channel length was performed. ZnO nanowire networks provide a less lithographically intense alternative to individual nanowire devices, are always semiconducting, and yield significantly higher mobilites than those achieved from currently used amorphous Si and organic TFTs. These results suggest that ZnO nanowire networks could be ideal for inexpensive large area electronics.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the synthesis and applications of semiconducting nanostructures. Nanostructures of interest were zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes where transistors/phototransistors and photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion cells have been fabricated. ZnO nanowires were grown with both high- and low-temperature approaches, depending on the application. Individual ZnO nanowire side-gated transistors revealed excellent performance with a field-effect mobility of 928 cm(2)/V . s. ZnO networks were proposed for large-area macroelectronic devices as a less lithographically intense alternative to individual nanowire transistors where mobility values in excess of 20 cm(2)/V . s have been achieved. Flexible PV devices utilizing ZnO nanowires as electron acceptors and for photoinduced charge separation and transport have been presented. Phototransistors were fabricated using individual WS2 nanotubes, where clear sensitivity to visible light has been observed. The results presented here simply reveal the potential use of inorganic nanowires/tubes for various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanowire networks are attractive as alternatives to organic and amorphous semiconductors due to their wide bandgap, flexibility and transparency. We demonstrate the fabrication of thin film transistors (TFT)s which utilize ZnO nanowires as the semiconducting channel. These thin film transistors can be transparent and flexible and processed at low temperatures on to a variety of substrates. The nanowire networks are created using a simple contact transfer method that is easily scalable. Apparent nanowire network mobility values can be as high as 3.8 cm(2)/VS (effective thin film mobility: 0.03 cm(2)/VS) in devices with 20 mu m channel lengths and ON/OFF ratios of up to 10(4).

Abstract:Abstract Nanostructured n-type metal oxides/p-type boron-doped diamond heterojunctions have demonstrated a typical rectification feature and/or negative differential resistance (NDR) potentially applied in wide fields. Recently, the fabrication and electronic transport behavior of n-WO 3 nanorods/p-diamond heterojunction at high temperatures were studied by Wang et al (2017 Appl. Phys. Lett. 110 052106), which opened the door for optoelectronic applications that can operate at high-temperatures, high-power, and in various harsh environments. In this perspective, an overview was presented on the future directions, challenges and opportunities for the optoelectronic applications based on the n-WO 3 nanostructures/p-diamond heterojunction. We focus, in particular, on the prospects for its high temperature NDR, UV photodetector, field emission emitters, photocatalyst and optical information storage for a wide range of new optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) is a wide band gap semiconductor with unintentionally n−doping performance, excellent conductivity, and high electron hall mobility, which is considered as a candidate material for application in optoelectronics. Several reviews on WO3 and its derivatives for various applications dealing with electrochemical, photoelectrochemical, hybrid photocatalysts, electrochemical energy storage, and gas sensors have appeared recently. Moreover, the nanostructured transition metal oxides have attracted considerable attention in the past decade because of their unique chemical, photochromic, and physical properties leading to numerous other potential applications. Owing to their distinctive photoluminescence (PL), electrochromic and electrical properties, WO3 nanostructure−based optical and electronic devices application have attracted a wide range of research interests. This review mainly focuses on the up−to−date progress in different advanced strategies from fundamental analysis to improve WO3 optoelectric, electrochromic, and photochromic properties in the development of tungsten oxide−based advanced devices for optical and electronic applications including photodetectors, light−emitting diodes (LED), PL properties, electrical properties, and optical information storage. This review on the prior findings of WO3−related optical and electrical devices, as well as concluding remarks and forecasts will help researchers to advance the field of optoelectric applications of nanostructured transition metal oxides.

Abstract:Transparent conducting electrodes which allow photons passing through and simultaneously transfers the charge carriers are critical for the construction of high-performance photovoltaic cells. Electrodes based on metal oxides, such as indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) or fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), may have limited application in new generation flexible solar cells, which employ solution-processed roll-to-roll or ink-printing techniques toward large-area-fabrication approach, due to their brittleness and poor mechanical properties. Metal nanowire network (MNWN) emerges as a highly potential alternative candidate instead of ITO or FTO due to the high transparency, low sheet resistance, low cost, solution processable and compatibility with a flexible substrate for high throughput production. This feature article systematically summarizes the recent advances of the MNWNs, including new concepts and emerging strategies for the synthesis of metal nanowires (MNWs), various approaches for the preparation of MNWNs and comprehensively discusses the novel MNWN electrodes prepared on different substrates. The state-of-the-art new generation solar cell devices, such as transparent, flexible and light-weight solar cells, with MNWN as a transparent conductive electrode are emphasized. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the development of MNWN electrodes toward application in the new generations of photovoltaic devices are discussed.

Abstract:Metallic nanowire networks (MNNs) are promising emerging transparent electrodes (TEs) in multiple application fields. In the last few years, they have been widely reported in the literature as they present attractive physical properties (both electrical and optical) while reducing the amount of required material with respect to conventional TEs, which makes them highly competitive in terms of cost, flexibility, and integrability. Despite all their virtues, MNNs have shown several drawbacks such as rapid degradation and limited capacity for fine-tuning the properties for each specific application. To overcome these issues, several coatings have been thoroughly studied, from polymers, carbonaceous materials, and oxynitrides, to metal oxides. Among these, metal oxides have been largely studied due to their large panoply of properties and different possible synthetic approaches. In this minireview, we provide an overview of the research on metal oxide-coated MNNs, with a particular focus on silver nanowire (AgNW) networks, as they are the most extensively studied. However, the discussion and conclusions drawn here can be directly applied to other metallic nanowires as well. Most importantly, we evaluate the impact of the coating on the fundamental properties and stability of these promising nanocomposites. Finally, a comprehensive overview of various applications based on these specific nanocomposites is presented, including photovoltaics, transparent heaters, smart windows, sensors, diodes, plasmonics, microelectronics, among others. This work offers insights into the potential applications of AgNW-metal oxide nanocomposites in the future and outlines the critical parameters of metal oxide coatings and their functionalities. This work will serve as a guideline towards designing more efficient metal oxide-MNNs through processes compatible with roll-to-roll mass manufacturing for industrial use.

Abstract:We report on studies of field-effect transistor (FET) and transparent thin-film transistor (TFT) devices based on lightly Ta-doped SnO2 nanowires. Uniform device performance was obtained using an in situ doping method, with average field-effect mobilities exceeding 100 cm2/(V•s). Prototype fully-transparent TFT devices on glass substrates showed excellent performance metrics in terms of transconductance and on/off ratio. The combined advantages of SnO2 nanowires: namely a low cost growth process, high electron mobility, and optical transparency; make the system well suited for large-scale transparent electronics on low-temperature substrates.

Abstract:There is an on-going drive to replace traditional transparent conducting electrode (TCE), indium tin oxide (ITO), as its brittleness and scarcity, and to meet the development of flexible and wearable electronics. Metal nanowires, typically Ag and Cu nanowires (NWs), are of particular interest for optoelectronic applications as the next-generation flexible, stretchable and transparent conductive electrodes due to their excellent mechanical and electrical properties. It is necessary to develop a facile route to produce well-defined metal nanowires for their large scale production and commercialization. Among a variety of processes that used to prepare Cu NWs and Ag NWs, solution synthesis was considered to be a promising approach due to the precursors are abundant and the morphology and structure of the product could be modulated by tuning reaction conditions. Herein, we highlight the review of latest developed strategies based on published patents and researches to prepare Ag NWs and Cu NWs with particular discussion on flexible and transparent conductors based on their percolating networks. The applications of these flexible transparent conductors with future research perspectives and challenges are also concluded and discussed. Zinc Oxide-Encapsulated Copper Nanowires for Stable Transparent Conductors

Abstract:Cu nanowire (NW)-based transparent conductors are considered to be highly promising constituents of next-generation flexible transparent electronics. However, the fast oxidation of copper under ambient conditions hinders the use of Cu NWs. Herein, we demonstrate a low-cost and scalable approach for preparing a ZnO shell on the surface of Cu NWs under ambient conditions. The covered ZnO shells enhance the oxidative stability of Cu NWs. The optical and electrical properties of ZnO@Cu NWs remain similar to the original performance of the Cu NWs (for example, before encapsulating: 13.5 Ω/sq. at 84.3%, after encapsulating: 19.2 Ω/sq. at 86.7%), which indicates that encapsulation with a ZnO shell enables the preservation of the transparency and conductivity of Cu NW networks. More importantly, the ZnO@Cu NWs exhibit excellent stability in terms of long-term storage, hot/humid environments, and strong oxidizing atmosphere/solution.

Abstract:For transparent conducting electrodes in optoelectronic devices, electrical sheet resistance and optical transmittance are two of the main criteria. Recently, metal nanowires have been demonstrated to be a promising type of transparent conducting electrode because of low sheet resistance and high transmittance. Here we incorporate a mesoscale metal wire (1–5 μm in diameter) into metal nanowire transparent conducting electrodes and demonstrate at least a one order of magnitude reduction in sheet resistance at a given transmittance. We realize experimentally a hybrid of mesoscale and nanoscale metal nanowires with high performance, including a sheet resistance of 0.36 Ω sq −1 and transmittance of 92%. In addition, the mesoscale metal wires are applied to a wide range of transparent conducting electrodes including conducting polymers and oxides with improvement up to several orders of magnitude. The metal mesowires can be synthesized by electrospinning methods and their general applicability opens up opportunities for many transparent conducting electrode applications.

Abstract:Metals possess the highest conductivity among all room-temperature materials; however, ultrathin metal films demonstrate decent optical transparency but poor sheet conductance due to electron scattering from the surface and grain boundaries. This article discusses engineered metal nanostructures in the form of nanogrids, nanowires, or continuous nanofibers as efficient transparent and conductive electrodes. Metal nanogrids are discussed, as they represent an excellent platform for understanding the fundamental science. Progress toward low-cost, nano-ink-based printed silver nanowire electrodes, including silver nanowire synthesis, film fabrication, wire-wire junction resistance, optoelectronic properties, and stability, are also discussed. Another important factor for low-cost application is to use earth-abundant materials. Copper-based nanowires and nanofibers are discussed in this context. Examples of device integrations of these materials are also given. Such metal nanostructure-based transparent electrodes are particularly attractive for solar cell applications.

Abstract:Flexible and transparent electronics enters into a new era of electronic technologies. Ubiquitous applications involve wearable electronics, biosensors, flexible transparent displays, radio-frequency identifications (RFIDs), etc. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and relevant materials are the most commonly used inorganic semiconductors in flexible and transparent devices, owing to their high electrical performances, together with low processing temperatures and good optical transparencies. In this paper, we review recent advances in flexible and transparent thin-film transistors (TFTs) based on ZnO and relevant materials. After a brief introduction, the main progress of the preparation of each component (substrate, electrodes, channel and dielectrics) is summarized and discussed. Then, the effect of mechanical bending on electrical performance is highlighted. Finally, we suggest the challenges and opportunities in future investigations.

Abstract:High-quality transparent electrodes are indispensable components of flexible optoelectronic devices as they guarantee sufficient light transparency and electrical conductivity. Compared to commercial indium tin oxide, metal nanowires are considered ideal candidates as flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) owing to their superior optoelectronic properties, excellent mechanical flexibility, solution treatability, and higher compatibility with semiconductors. However, certain key challenges associated with material preparation and device fabrication remain for the practical application of metal nanowire-based electrodes. In this review, we discuss state-of-the-art solution-processed metal nanowire-based FTEs and their applications in flexible and stretchable optoelectronic devices. Specifically, the important properties of FTEs and a cost-benefit analysis of existing technologies are introduced, followed by a summary of the synthesis strategy, key properties, and fabrication technologies of the nanowires. Subsequently, we explore the applications of metal-nanowire-based FTEs in different optoelectronic devices including solar cells, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Finally, the current status, future challenges, and emerging strategies in this field are presented.

Copper nanowires (Cu NWs) are considered as one of the most promising alternatives due to their excellent electrical properties and low-cost processing. This review summarizes the recent progress on the synthesis methods of long Cu NWs, and the fabrication techniques and protection measures for Cu NW TEs. Abstract:With the advance in flexible and stretchable electronics, one-dimensional nanomaterials such as metal nanowires have drawn much attention in the past 10 years or so. Metal nanowires, especially silver nanowires, have been recognized as promising candidate materials for flexible and stretchable electronics. Owing to their high electrical conductivity and high aspect ratio, metal nanowires can form electrical percolation networks, maintaining high electrical conductivity under deformation (e.g., bending and stretching). Apart from coating metal nanowires for making large-area transparent conductive films, many applications require patterned metal nanowires as electrodes and interconnects. Precise patterning of metal nanowire networks is crucial to achieve high device performances. Therefore, a high-resolution, designable, and scalable patterning of metal nanowire networks is important but remains a critical challenge for fabricating high-performance electronic devices. This review summarizes recent advances in patterning of metal nanowire networks, using subtractive methods, additive methods of nanowire dispersions, and printing methods. Representative device applications of the patterned metal nanowire networks are presented. Finally, challenges and important directions in the area of the patterning of metal nanowire networks for device applications are discussed.

Abstract:This research addresses challenges with silver nanowires (Ag NWs) as transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) and heaters in commercial devices. Here, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are first reported as a protective layer for Ag NWs. Multi-physics simulations confirm enhanced thermal stability due to improved heat dissipation, temperature distribution, and thermal conductivity from ZnO. When Ag NWs are surrounded by air, heat transfers mainly through convection and radiation because of air's low conduction coefficient. Encasing Ag NWs in ZnO enhances heat transfer to the ZnO surface, accelerating cooling and dissipating more heat into the atmosphere via convection. The results show composite's efficiency in the Joule effect, maintaining a consistent temperature of 78 °C for 700 s after 500 bending cycles, a significant improvement over Ag NWs operating for only 5 s at 80 °C. Additionally, the composite film exhibited exceptional performance, including a sheet resistance of 9.8 Ω sq-1 and an optical transmittance of 96.96 %, outperforming Ag NWs, which have a sheet resistance of 12 Ω sq-1 and a transmittance of 94.11%. The combination of enhanced electrical, thermal, and mechanical stability, along with impressive optical properties, makes Ag NWs/ZnO NPs a promising candidate for transparent conductive electrode materials in various applications.

Abstract:In this invited talk, our recent progresses in the research of field emission from several oxide nanowires and their applications in vacuum microelectronic devices will be reviewed. Field emission properties from of CuO, $WO_{3-x}$ and ZnO nanowires were studied and their field emission mechanism were discussed. Applications of nanowire field emitter in gated field emitter, flat panel x-ray source and imaging detector were explored. Prototype of flat panel X-ray source using ZnO nanowire field emitters was fabricated and its high resolution imaging capability was demonstrated. The feasibility of a large area high-sensitive detector using ZnO nanowire field emitters is also verified.
