Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:Three perylenediimide (PDI) acceptors (P2O2, P2N2 and P4N4) were synthesized by functionalizing the bay positions of PDI with benzil, 2,3-diphenylquinoxaline and 2,3,7,8-tetraphenylpyrazino[2,3-g] quinoxaline as linkers, respectively. The photovoltaic properties of the three acceptor molecules have been investigated. The different PDI linker units show different physical and chemical properties of the PDIs. The three PDIs display different non-planar geometrical structures because of the different linker units, which affect the corresponding morphology of the blend films and also influence the charge mobility and fill factor (FF) of the organic solar cells (OSCs). Furthermore, the gradient energy levels of the three PDIs provide an efficient research model for the relationship of device open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and energy levels. As the result, the P4N4 based non-fullerene devices show the best photovoltaic performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.71%, whereas the P2O2 and P2N2 based non-fullerene devices show relatively lower PCEs of 2.53% and 3.86%, respectively.

Abstract:A series of PDI-based small molecular acceptors (FPDI-I, FPDI-II, F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II) using 9H-fluorene as the central core and two PDI units or two PDI dimer units (PDI2) as the terminal groups have been synthesized. The optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these four acceptors have been systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit twisted structures mainly due to the dihedral angles between the central fluorene core and the two terminal PDI units. The twisted molecular structures can effectively prevent the acceptor molecules from forming oversized aggregates. The two terminal fused PDI dimer units in F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II can enhance their molar absorption coefficients. Using PBDB-T as the donor polymer, F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II based devices exhibit higher and more balanced charge mobilities. As a result, organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PBDB-T:F2PDI-I give the best device performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.82%, a Voc of 0.90 V, a Jsc of 11.32 mA cm-2 and an FF of 66.65%.

Abstract:Four perylenediimide (PDI) dimers UFPDI, FPDI, UFPDI-T and FPDI-T are synthesized and used as nonfullerene acceptors for the fabrication of organic solar cells with the medium-bandgap polymer PBDB-T as the donor material. These four acceptors with three-dimensional molecular structures display good solubilities in the processing solvent, which is helpful to form nanoscale separation when blended with the polymer donor. The PDI subunits in the unfused PDI dimers UFPDI and UFPDI-T are twisted and the two acceptors display a broad featureless absorption in the visible region. The fused PDI dimers FPDI and FPDI-T display an X-shaped geometry with large dihedral angles of approximately 40° and their PDI subunits are planar. The fused PDI dimers with the X-shaped molecular conformation is helpful for suppressing the formation of large sized aggregations and the planar PDI subunits are in favor of forming closely π-π stacking to ensure reasonable electron mobilities. Moreover, UFPDI-T and FPDI-T with fused thiophene at outer bay positions possess elevated LUMO energy levels, which can enhance the open circuit voltage (Voc) of devices. FPDI-T based devices display much higher and more balanced hole/electron mobilities. A high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.5% is achieved for FPDI-T based devices, which is much higher than those of UFPDI (4.19%), FPDI (2.95%) and UFPDI-T (4.61%) based ones. Our results demonstrate that simultaneously inner and outer annulation of PDI dimers is a feasible strategy to design high performance PDI-based acceptors.

Abstract:Three small-molecule acceptors (Por-PDI, TEHPor-PDI, and BBOPor-PDI) with different side chains were synthesized by using a porphyrin core as the electron-donating unit and connecting electron-withdrawing perylene diimide dimers via acetylene bridges. The bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on the three acceptors and a polymer donor provided power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3.68-5.21 % when the active layers were fabricated with pyridine additives. Though the synthesis of Por-PDI is easier with fewer reaction steps and higher yields, the devices based on Por-PDI showed the best performance with a PCE of 5.21 %. The more ordered intermolecular packing due to the reduced steric hindrance at the porphyrin core of Por-PDI could contribute to the more balanced hole/electron mobilities, higher maximum charge generation rate, and less bimolecular recombination in Por-PDI devices, which are beneficial for the higher PCE.

Abstract:A highly efficient acceptor material for organic solar cells (OSCs) - based on perylene diimide (PDI) dimers - shows significantly reduced aggregation compared to monomeric PDI. The dimeric PDI shows a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) approximately 300 times that of the monomeric PDI when blended with a conjugate polymer (BDTTTT-C-T) and with 1,8-diiodooctane as co-solvent (5%). This shows that non-fullerene materials also hold promise for efficient OSCs.

Abstract:Two perylene diimide (PDI) based polymeric acceptors, PFPDIBT-TT2F and PFPDIT-TT2F, which consist of fused-PDI moieties (FPDIBT and FPDIT) and 3,3′-difluoro-2,2′-bithiophene (TT2F) units, has been designed and synthesized. Compared with the unfused-PDI polymer (PPDI-TT2F) as the control molecule, the influence of structural conformation and π-conjugation extension on the performance of all-polymer solar cells has been investigated. Due to both the extended π-conjugation and the torsional polymer skeleton, the device adopting PFPDIT-TT2F achieved an obviously improved PCE of 5.11% comparing with the devices using the other two polymeric acceptors. This study demonstrates that the fused PDIs bridged by a thiophene enables both extended π-conjugation and twisted molecular conformation, and the latter plays a dominant role in the improvement of device performance.

Abstract:A series of non-fullerene acceptors based on perylene monoimides coupled in the peri position through phenylene linkers were synthesized via Suzuki-coupling reactions. Various substitution patterns were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations in combination with experimental data to elucidate the geometry and their optical and electrochemical properties. Further investigations of the bulk properties with grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) gave insight into the stacking behavior of the acceptor thin films. Electrochemical and morphological properties correlate with the photovoltaic performance of devices with the polymeric donor PBDB-T and a maximum efficiency of 3.17 % was reached. The study gives detailed information about structure-property relationships of perylene-linker-perylene compounds.

Abstract:A star-shaped electron acceptor based on porphyrin as a core and perylene bisimide as end groups was constructed for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells. The new conjugated molecule exhibits aligned energy levels, good electron mobility, and complementary absorption with a donor polymer. These advantages facilitate a high power conversion efficiency of 7.4% in non-fullerene solar cells, which represents the highest photovoltaic performance based on porphyrin derivatives as the acceptor.

Abstract:Three kinds of nonconjugated rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives based on a triptycene core were designed, synthesized and characterized. The unique three-dimensional (3D) conformation of triptycene could enable formation of polymer with the favorable morphology for organic polymer solar cells (PSCs) by relieving the self-aggregation of rigid PBI units. The low-lying LUMO energy levels of these compounds demonstrated that they are very suitable for use as acceptors in organic solar cells. A higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.15% was obtained for the blend film using the compound with two PBI units (T-2) as the acceptor and commercial poly[[4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)-carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PCE-10) as the electron donor.

Abstract:A new non-fullerene acceptor PDFC is prepared by introducing perylene diimide into the core of an A-DA ' D-A architecture. Due to the large conjugation and electron-deficient ability of perylene diimide, PDFC shows strong absorption, suitable energy levels and favorable face-on packing. The optimal device realizes a PCE of 12.56% with one of the highest fill factors (81.3%). A PCE of 9.66% is obtained in a 570 nm thick-film device based on PDFC.

Abstract:Two new non-fullerene acceptors, namely QIP-4F and QIP-4Cl, containing a novel imide-functionalized quinoxaline (QI) moiety fused with a thienylthiophene unit as the central building block, and fluorinated or chlorinated 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene)malononitrile as end-capping groups, were designed and synthesized, respectively. An optimized device based on P2F-EHp:QIP-4Cl presented a power conversion efficiency of 13.3%, with an impressively high open-circuit voltage of 0.94 V. These results demonstrate the great potential of QI-containing fused units as central building blocks for high-performance acceptors.

Abstract:Fullerene‐free polymer solar cell devices based on a new acceptor, H‐tri‐PDI that is connected by three perylene diimide (PDI) units via imide position shows a power conversation efficiency of 7.25% with a short circuit current density of 16.5 mA cm−2. Thus H‐tri‐PDI molecules and the method of connecting multiple PDI units via imide position provide a reliable guide for the further development of PDI‐based acceptors.

Abstract:Considering the combination of the advantages of both the acceptor-donor-acceptor and perylene diimide type acceptors, three new cross-conjugated small molecule non-fullerene acceptors were rationally designed and synthesized. Their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit highly extended absorption spectra ranging from 300 to 700 nm as well as appropriate lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels compared with those of the general acceptors based on perylene diimide. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells based on the resultant acceptors were fabricated in the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PTB7-Th:acceptor/PFN-Br/Ag configuration. Benefiting from efficient exciton dissociation, reduced bimolecular recombination, and enhanced and balanced electron mobility, the device-based PDIBDT-IT exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.06% with a high short-circuit current density (J(SC)) of 13.60 mA/cm(2), a fill factor (FF) of 60.45%, and an open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of 0.74 V, which was higher than those of PDIBDT-RDN and PDIBDT-ITF. The underlying mechanism was carefully studied and discussed. The extended absorption of PDIBDT-IT contributes to its relatively high PCE; however, the performance will be potentially improved by ehnancing the electron mobility of these acceptors. Our results provide an efficient cross-conjugated approach and great flexibility in fine-tuning physicochemical properties, including absorption spectra and energy levels of the acceptors toward high-performance solar cells.
