Abstract:In this work, we have designed and synthesized two hybrid nonfused electron acceptors with a perylene diimide pendant (denoted TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6), where TPDICPBI featured a rigid linker, whereas TPDICPBI-C6 incorporated a flexible linker. It was realized via synthesizing the perylene diimide-containing dibromine compounds and performing the Stille reaction followed by Knoevenagel condensation. TPDICPBI with the rigid linker exhibits a much higher glass transition temperature (T g, 208 degrees C) compared to that (92 degrees C) of TPDICPBI-C6 with the flexible linker, which can be attributed to the rigid linker that limits the motion of both TPDIC and the PBI unit. Then, the two electron acceptors were applied to organic solar cells (OSCs). Devices based on TPDICPBI gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.91%, and TPDICPBI-C6-based devices showed a reduced PCE of 8.39%. Morphological characterization revealed that both TPDICPBI and TPDICPBI-C6 exhibited overall weak aggregation/crystallization properties. The results suggest that by employing rational molecular engineering to adjust the aggregation/crystallization properties of TPDICPBI, the hybrid electron acceptors will give satisfactory photovoltaic performance.
A simple perylene diimide derivative with a highly twisted geometry as an electron acceptor for efficient organic solar cells

Abstract:Perylene diimide (PDI), which features intense absorption, a low-lying energy level, and high electron mobility, is a promising building block for electron acceptors in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, this planar molecule has a strong tendency to form large aggregates during film formation which strongly limits its OSC performance. Herein, we report a new and simple PDI derivative, B(PDI)(3), in which a central benzene unit is employed to connect three PDI arms. This compact arrangement of sterically bulky PDI moieties leads to a twisted molecular geometry of the resultant structure. This suppresses the strong crystallization tendency of PDI chromophores, owing to the broken molecular coplanarity and symmetry. Therefore, B(PDI) 3 is applied as a non-fullerene acceptor in OSCs, providing a good power conversion efficiency of 5.65% when blended with the PTB7-Th donor.

Abstract:A series of PDI dimers featuring various arylene linkers are developed as electron acceptors in organic solar cells. Using P3HT as the donor, power conversion efficiency of up to 2.3% is achieved with two PDI dimers having spirobifluorene linkers. The results indicate that such non-planar, three-dimensional structures effectively suppress self-aggregation and crystallization of the PDI units, which is favourable for their solar cell performance.

Abstract:A series of PDI-based small molecular acceptors (FPDI-I, FPDI-II, F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II) using 9H-fluorene as the central core and two PDI units or two PDI dimer units (PDI2) as the terminal groups have been synthesized. The optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of these four acceptors have been systematically investigated. These acceptors exhibit twisted structures mainly due to the dihedral angles between the central fluorene core and the two terminal PDI units. The twisted molecular structures can effectively prevent the acceptor molecules from forming oversized aggregates. The two terminal fused PDI dimer units in F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II can enhance their molar absorption coefficients. Using PBDB-T as the donor polymer, F2PDI-I and F2PDI-II based devices exhibit higher and more balanced charge mobilities. As a result, organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PBDB-T:F2PDI-I give the best device performance with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.82%, a Voc of 0.90 V, a Jsc of 11.32 mA cm-2 and an FF of 66.65%.

Abstract:Fullerene‐free polymer solar cell devices based on a new acceptor, H‐tri‐PDI that is connected by three perylene diimide (PDI) units via imide position shows a power conversation efficiency of 7.25% with a short circuit current density of 16.5 mA cm−2. Thus H‐tri‐PDI molecules and the method of connecting multiple PDI units via imide position provide a reliable guide for the further development of PDI‐based acceptors.

Abstract:Two new star-shaped perylene diimide (PDI)-based small-molecule acceptors denoted as BDP-3PDI and BDP-4PDI with BODIPY derivatives as the core and PDI units as peripheral groups were designed and successfully synthesized, and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were studied. When paired with a compatible D–A polymer donor P(BTT-DPP), the polymer solar cells based on the bulk heterojunction active layer attained power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of about 10.97 and 13.94% for BDP-3PDI and BDP-4PDI, respectively. The higher value of PCE for BDP-4PDI is mainly owing to the enhanced values of the fill factor and short circuit current as compared to BDP-3PDI and related to the more balanced charge transport and blocked charge recombination owing to the appropriate phase separation in the P(BTT-DPP):BDP-4PDI active layer as compared to P(BTT-DPP):BDP-3PDI.

Abstract:A high performance three-dimensional (3D) thiophene-annulated perylene dye, namely tetra-PBI-S, was designed and synthesized. The appropriate LUMO level, balanced carrier mobilities and favourable phase separation make tetra-PBI-S based solar cells show a much higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.2% than tetra-PBI based solar cells with a PCE of 3.6%.

Abstract:Two cheliforrn non-fullerene acceptors, DTPC-IC and DTPC-DFIC, based on a highly electron-rich core, dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), are synthesized, showing ultra-narrow bandgaps (as low as 1.21 eV). The two-dimensional nitrogen-containing conjugated DTPC possesses strong electron-donating Capability, which induces intense intramolecular charge transfer and intermolecular pi-pi stacking hi derived acceptors. The solar cell based on DTPC-DFIC and a spectrally complementary polymer donor, PTB7-Th, showed a high power conversion efficiency of 10.21% and an extremely low energy loss of 045 eV, which is the lowest among reported efficient OSCs.

Abstract:Three kinds of nonconjugated rigid perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives based on a triptycene core were designed, synthesized and characterized. The unique three-dimensional (3D) conformation of triptycene could enable formation of polymer with the favorable morphology for organic polymer solar cells (PSCs) by relieving the self-aggregation of rigid PBI units. The low-lying LUMO energy levels of these compounds demonstrated that they are very suitable for use as acceptors in organic solar cells. A higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.15% was obtained for the blend film using the compound with two PBI units (T-2) as the acceptor and commercial poly[[4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)-carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PCE-10) as the electron donor.

Abstract:Polymerization of small molecule acceptors (PSMAs) has been proved to be an effective strategy to design polymer acceptors. DPP-based PSMAs of P(IDIC-2TDPPEh) employing double electron-withdrawing building block IDIC and thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole were well designed and prepared. The all-polymer solar cells employed P(IDIC-2TDPPEh) as acceptor and PBDB-T as donor performed a PCE of 1.57%. This work highly broadens the potential applications of DPP-based PSMAs in the fields of organic electronics.

Abstract:Perylene diimides are known as promising n-type semiconductor building blocks. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a set of three soluble poly(perylene diimide)s and their preliminary characterization in organic photovoltaic cells. These polymers are made through the polycondensation of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) with a variety of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)- or poly(propylene glycol) (PPG)-based diamine comonomers. The flexible spacer offers increased solubility in organic solvents and allows the perylene core to assume a conformation that promotes favorable cofacial π–π interactions. Mixtures of these polymers with the hole-transporting polymer, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) result in significant fluorescence quenching. However, the phase separation occurs on a scale too large for a bulk heterojunction solar cell. The PPGylated poly(perylene diimide) shows an unusually low free electron concentration (∼1.0×1012cm−3) and therefore makes an excellent model system for future doping studies. These new polymers may have promise as stable electron-conductive layers with large light-absorptivities in solution-processable applications of organic electronics.

Abstract:Two perylene diimide (PDI) based polymeric acceptors, PFPDIBT-TT2F and PFPDIT-TT2F, which consist of fused-PDI moieties (FPDIBT and FPDIT) and 3,3′-difluoro-2,2′-bithiophene (TT2F) units, has been designed and synthesized. Compared with the unfused-PDI polymer (PPDI-TT2F) as the control molecule, the influence of structural conformation and π-conjugation extension on the performance of all-polymer solar cells has been investigated. Due to both the extended π-conjugation and the torsional polymer skeleton, the device adopting PFPDIT-TT2F achieved an obviously improved PCE of 5.11% comparing with the devices using the other two polymeric acceptors. This study demonstrates that the fused PDIs bridged by a thiophene enables both extended π-conjugation and twisted molecular conformation, and the latter plays a dominant role in the improvement of device performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we designed, synthesized, and characterized a set of non-fullerene small molecules based on bis(perylene diimide) with DACH bridge. Theoretical calculations make clear that the introduction of the DACH bridge into PPDI forms a U-shape framework, with pi–pi interactions between PDIs. We investigate the performances of non-fullerene solar cells comprising racemic and enantiomerically pure DACH-PPDIs as the electron acceptor and PTB7-Th as the electron donor. As a consequence, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.68% is achieved with inverted device architecture. Furthermore, the device behaviour, morphological feature and charge transport properties were also investigated. It is a potential way to design highly efficient non-fullerene organic solar cell by tuning the structure of PDI to reach highly efficient photovoltaic performances.

Abstract:A novel planar acceptor IDT-2BR was designed and synthesized. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on P3HT:IDT-2BR blended films gave power conversion efficiencies of up to 5.12%, which are much higher than that of PC61BM-based control devices (3.71%) and the highest values reported for P3HT-based fullerene-free PSCs.

Abstract:A series of perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) with near infrared (NIR) absorption and different geometries were synthesized by introducing 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) and 4-butyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (BuTAD) to the bay position of PDIs through the Diels–Alder reaction. The compounds with various twisted three-dimensional (3D) structures were obtained through combining different connection units, and their aggregation and domain size of the donor-acceptor blends were adjusted. All of these compounds exhibit broad absorption in the range of 300∼860 nm, high thermal stability (with a decomposition temperature over 350 °C), applicable lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels (-3.70 ∼ -3.74 eV), and appropriate solubility. Blending with a PM6 polymer donor, bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ OSCs) based on BDT-SBuTADPDI2 exhibited the highest power conversion efficiency of 2.74%. Their carrier mobility and morphology were investigated by Space-charge-limited current (SCLC) measurements and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements respectively. This study provides a promising strategy to construct potential PDI-based acceptors with NIR absorption.

Abstract:A nonfullerene acceptor based on a 3D tetraperylene diimide is developed for bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics. The disruption of perylene diimide planarity with a 3D framework suppresses the self-aggregation of perylene diimide and inhibits excimer formation. From planar monoperylene diimide to 3D tetraperylene diimide, a significant improvement of power conversion efficiency from 0.63% to 3.54% can be achieved.

Abstract:A star-shaped electron acceptor based on porphyrin as a core and perylene bisimide as end groups was constructed for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells. The new conjugated molecule exhibits aligned energy levels, good electron mobility, and complementary absorption with a donor polymer. These advantages facilitate a high power conversion efficiency of 7.4% in non-fullerene solar cells, which represents the highest photovoltaic performance based on porphyrin derivatives as the acceptor.

Abstract:An electron acceptor with a truxene core and ring-fusion perylene diimide (PDI) tripolymer annulated by selenium (Se) branch, named as FTr-3PDI-Se, is designed and synthesized. FTr-3PDI-Se exhibits large conjugated planar conformation, strong absorption spectra in the regions of 300–400 and 450–550 nm, the deep HOMO energy level of 6.10 eV, and high decomposition temperature above 400°C. The FTr-3PDI-Se: PBDB-T-2Cl based device achieved a disappointing power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.6% together with a high V oc of 1.12 V. The low PCE was due to the large aggregates of blend film, the imbalanced hole/electron transport and low PL quenching efficiencies. The high V oc can be attributed to the high-lying LUMO level of FTr-3PDI-Se and the low-lying HOMO level of PBDB-T-2Cl. Our research presents an interesting and effective molecule-designing method to develop non-fullerene acceptor.
