Abstract:Downsizing the catalyst to atom scale offers an effective way to maximize the atom utilization efficiency for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, single-atomic ruthenium (Ru) anchored on a chemically activated Ti3C2 with O-terminated groups (Ti3C2O) was designed to catalyze the NRR process. The catalyst achieved a superior activity and selectivity with ammonia yield rate of 27.56 mu g h(-1) mg(-1) and faradaic efficiency of 23.3 % at a low potential of -0.20 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. According to the atomic resolution images from aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, Ru sites on Ti3C2O achieved good dispersion on atomic scale. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further demonstrated that the O-termination groups were successfully activated. Density functional theory calculations combined with experiments revealed that single Ru sites binding to four oxygen were the main reaction centers that permitted the hydrogenation of *NNH2 to *NHNH2 in a novel distal/alternating hybrid path while reducing the energy barrier of the potential-limiting step to 0.78 eV from 0.96 eV in the distal path alone or 1.18 eV in the alternating path alone, thereby significantly promoting the NRR dynamics.

Abstract:Ammonia is an effective feedstock for chemicals, fertilizers, and energy storage. The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is an alternative, efficient, and clean technology for ammonia production, relative to the traditional Haber–Bosch method. Single-metal catalysts are widely studied in the field of NRR. However, very limited conclusions have been made on how to precisely modulate the coordination environment of the single-metal-atom sites to boost catalytic NRR performance. Herein, we report a 5,7-membered carbon ring-involved porous carbon (PC) preparation toward single-atom Ru-embedded PCs. As electrocatalysts, such materials exhibit surprisingly promising catalytic NRR properties with an NH3 yield rate of up to 67.8 ± 4.9 μg h–1 mgcat–1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 19.5 ± 0.6%, exceeding those of most of the reported single-atom NRR catalysts. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure demonstrates that the presence of topological defects increases the Ru–N bond from 1.48 to 1.56 Å, modulating the coordination environment of the single-atom Ru active sites. Density functional theory-calculated results demonstrate that the adsorption of N2 onto single-atom Ru surrounded by topological defects extends the N≡N bond to 1.146 Å, weakening the strength of N≡N and making it susceptible to the NRR. All in all, this work provides a new design strategy by involving topological defects and corresponding large polarization around the Ru single atom to boost the catalytic NRR performance. Such a concept can also be applied to many other kinds of catalysts for energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Mo, W, Nb and Ru dimers supported on Graphdiyne are designed as promising electrocatalysts for N2 reduction. First‐principles calculations reveal that Ru2@GDY exhibits the highest N2 reduction activity with a maximum energy change of 0.55 eV via the enzymatic pathway.Converting N2 to NH3 is an essential reaction but remains a great challenge for industries. Developing more efficient catalysts for N2 reduction under mild conditions is of vital importance. In this work, double transition metal atoms (TM=Mo, W, Nb and Ru) anchored on graphdiyne monolayer (TM2@GDY) as electrocatalysts are designed, and the corresponding reaction mechanisms of N2 electroreduction are systematically investigated by means of first‐principles calculations. The results show that the double TM atoms can be strongly anchored on the acetylenic ring of GDY and Ru2@GDY exhibits the highest catalytic activity for NRR with a maximum free energy change of 0.55 eV through the enzymatic pathway. The significant charge transfer between the substrate and the adsorbed N2 molecule is responsible for the superior catalytic activity. This work could provide a new approach for the rational design of double‐atom catalysts for NRR and other related reduction reactions.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction ( eNRR) offers a promising strategy to synthesize ammonia at ambient conditions. However, the selectivity and yield of ammonia are greatly impeded by the slow kinetics of the eNRR and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we find that by growing Ru nanoparticles on rutile TiO2, the intimate electronic coupling between Ru nanoparticles and TiO2 support is able to greatly promote the first protonation of N-2 via an associative mechanism in the eNRR while suppressing theHER, resulting in a greatly improved ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 40.7% and yield of 10.4 mgNH3 h(-1) cm(-2) geometric area at -0.15 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.5 M K2SO4 aqueous solution at room temperature and ambient pressure. Our work provides a general approach to achieve selective electrochemical reaction by controlling the binding strength of reactive intermediates via interface engineering.

Abstract:Single-metal atomic sites and vacancies can accelerate the transfer of photogenerated electrons and enhance photocatalytic performance in photocatalysis. In this study, a series of nickel hydroxide nanoboards (Ni(OH)x NBs) with different loadings of single-atomic Ru sites (w-SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x) were synthesized via a photoreduction strategy. In such catalysts, single-atomic Ru sites are anchored to the vacancies surrounding the pits. Notably, the SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x with 0.60 wt.% Ru loading (0.60-SA-Ru/Ni(OH)x) exhibits the highest catalytic performance (27.6 mmol g-1h-1) during the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR). Either superfluous (0.64 wt.%, 18.9 mmol g-1h-1; 3.35 wt.%, 9.4 mmol g-1h-1) or scarce (0.06 wt.%, 15.8 mmol g-1h-1; 0.29 wt.%, 21.95 mmol g-1h-1; 0.58 wt.%, 23.4 mmol g-1h-1) of Ru sites have negative effect on its catalytic properties. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with experimental results revealed that CO2 can be adsorbed in the pits; single-atomic Ru sites can help with the conversion of as-adsorbed CO2 and lower the energy of *COOH formation accelerating the reaction; the excessive single-atomic Ru sites occupy vacancies that retard the completion of CO2RR.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for ammonia synthesis remains a long-standing challenge owing to unsatisfactory activity and low selectivity of electrocatalysts. By employing the density functional theory calculations, we designed a series of trimetallic single-cluster catalysts including group IVB to IIB transition metals supported on N-doped porous graphene (M3-NG) for electrochemical NRR. Based on the analysis of the thermodynamic and electrochemical stability, activity, and selectivity, Ni3-NG, Ru3-NG, and Ir3-NG were predicted as promising electrocatalysts for NRR with extremely low limiting potential of -0.31 - -0.33 V. The detailed mechanistic study revealed that they can effectively activate the inert N2 by multiple "pull-push effect" according to the tunable electronic structure. An electronic descriptor was proposed to effectively estimate the NRR activity of M3-NG by considering the number of relevant electrons and the first ionization energies for metal and nitrogen atoms, and it is expected to be widely applicable for other similar catalysts and beyond.

Abstract:Nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions remains a significant challenge. Here, we report nitrogen fixation by Ru single-atom electrocatalytic reduction at room temperature and pressure. In contrast to Ru nanoparticles, single Ru sites supported on N-doped porous carbon greatly promoted electroreduction of aqueous N2 selectively to NH3, affording an NH3 formation rate of 3.665 m g N H 3 h − 1 m g Ru − 1 at −0.21 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Importantly, the addition of ZrO2 was found to significantly suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. An NH3 faradic efficiency of about 21% was achieved at a low overpotential (0.17 V), surpassing many other reported catalysts. Experiments combined with density functional theory calculations showed that the Ru sites with oxygen vacancies were major active centers that permitted stabilization of *NNH, destabilization of *H, and enhanced N2 adsorption. We envision that optimization of ZrO2 loading could further facilitate electroreduction of N2 at both high NH3 synthesis rate and faradic efficiency.

Atomic Ru cluster supported on CeO2(110) for effective catalyzing electrochemical N2 reduction reaction: insights from density functional theory

Abstract:In this work, density-functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the geometry and electronic structure of Run(n=1-6,10) supported on CeO2(110) (Run(n=1-6,10)/CeO2(110)) and their electrocatalytic properties for N2 reduction reaction (NRR). The results indicated that there is a strong metal-support interaction between Run and CeO2(110), which leads to a large surface distortion and stabilized Run. On Run(n=1-6,10))/CeO2(110), N2 captured in end-on mode is thermodynamically more favorable than in side-on mode, however, side-on mode can lead to a stronger activation of N2 which promotes the following protonation step of N2. For Run(n=3,5,6))/CeO2(110), electrochemical NRR prefers to occur via an enzymatic mechanism with a limiting potential of -0.31, -0.53 and -0.66 V. The electrocatalytic activity of Run(n=1-6,10)/CeO2(110) for NRR shows a strong sized dependence. For Ru3/CeO2(110), it has a lowest absolute value of limiting potential, with the increasing of n (n> 3), the liming potential becomes more negative. Moreover, Ru3/CeO2(110) shows a high selectivity and stability. This gives valuable insights for design of effective catalyst for NRR.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is an attractive pathway for producing ammonia under ambient conditions. The development of efficient catalysts for nitrogen fixation in electrochemical NRRs has become increasingly important, but it remains challenging due to the need to address the issues of activity and selectivity. Herein, using density functional theory (DFT), we explore ten kinds of triple transition metal atoms (M3 = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) anchored on the C2N monolayer (M3-C2N) as NRR electrocatalysts. The negative binding energies of M3 clusters on C2N mean that the triple transition metal clusters can be stably anchored on the N6 cavity of the C2N structure. As the first step of the NRR, the adsorption configurations of N2 show that the N2 on M3-C2N catalysts can be stably adsorbed in a side-on mode, except for Zn3-C2N. Moreover, the extended N-N bond length and electronic structure indicate that the N2 molecule has been fully activated on the M3-C2N surface. The results of limiting potential screen out the four M3-C2N catalysts (Co3-C2N, Cr3-C2N, Fe3-C2N, and Ni3-C2N) that have a superior electrochemical NRR performance, and the corresponding values are −0.61 V, −0.67 V, −0.63 V, and −0.66 V, respectively, which are smaller than those on Ru(0001). In addition, the detailed NRR mechanism studied shows that the alternating and enzymatic mechanisms of association pathways on Co3-C2N, Cr3-C2N, Fe3-C2N, and Ni3-C2N are more energetically favorable. In the end, the catalytic selectivity for NRR on M3-C2N is investigated through the performance of a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on them. We find that Co3-C2N, Cr3-C2N, Fe3-C2N, and Ni3-C2N catalysts possess a high catalytic activity for NRR and exhibit a strong capability of suppressing the competitive HER. Our findings provide a new strategy for designing NRR catalysts with high catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Realizing efficient hydrogenation of N2 molecules in the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is crucial in achieving high activity at a low potential because it theoretically requires a higher equilibrium potential than other steps. Analogous to metal hydride complexes for N2 reduction, achieving this step by chemical hydrogenation can weaken the potential dependence of the initial hydrogenation process. However, this strategy is rarely reported in the electrocatalytic NRR, and the catalytic mechanism remains ambiguous and lacks experimental evidence. Here, we show a highly efficient electrocatalyst (ruthenium single atoms anchored on graphdiyne/graphene sandwich structures) with a hydrogen radical-transferring mechanism, in which graphdiyne (GDY) generates hydrogen radicals (H•), which can effectively activate N2 to generate NNH radicals (•NNH). A dual-active site is constructed to suppress competing hydrogen evolution, where hydrogen preferentially adsorbs on GDY and Ru single atoms serve as the adsorption site of •NNH to promote further hydrogenation of NH3 synthesis. As a result, high activity and selectivity are obtained simultaneously at -0.1 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Our findings illustrate a novel hydrogen transfer mechanism that can greatly reduce the potential and maintain the high activity and selectivity in NRR and provide powerful guidelines for the design concept of electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen into ammonia (NH 3 ) is a highly attractive but challenging route for NH 3 production. We propose to realize a synergetic work of multi reaction sites to overcome the limitation of sustainable NH 3 production. Herein, using ruthenium-sulfur-carbon (Ru-S-C) catalyst as a prototype, we show that the Ru/S dual-site cooperates to catalyse eletrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) at ambient conditions. With the combination of theoretical calculations, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and experimental observation, we demonstrate that such Ru/S dual-site cooperation greatly facilitates the activation and first protonation of N 2 in the rate-determining step of eNRR. As a result, Ru-S-C catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced eNRR performance compared with the routine Ru-N-C catalyst via a single-site catalytic mechanism. We anticipate that our specifically designed dual-site collaborative catalytic mechanism will open up a new way to offers new opportunities for advancing sustainable NH 3 production. Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) serves as a promising catalyst for ammonia synthesis via the Haber-Bosch process, identification of the structure sensitivity to improve the activity of Ru is important but not fully explored yet. We present here density functional theory calculations combined with micro-kinetic simulations on nitrogen molecule activation, a crucial step in ammonia synthesis, over a variety of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and face-center cubic (fcc) Ru facets. Hcp {213¯0} facet exhibits the highest activity toward N2 dissociation in hcp Ru, followed by the (0001) monatomic step sites. The other hcp Ru facets have N2 dissociation rates at least three orders lower. Fcc {211} facet shows the best performance for N2 activation in fcc Ru, followed by {311}, which indicates stepped surfaces make great contributions to the overall reactivity. Although hcp Ru {213¯0} facet and (0001) monatomic step sites have lower or comparable activation barriers compared with fcc Ru {211} facet, fcc Ru is proposed to be more active than hcp Ru for N2 conversion due to the exposure of the more favorable active sites over step surfaces in fcc Ru. This work provides new insights into the crystal structure sensitivity of N2 activation for mechanistic understanding and rational design of ammonia synthesis over Ru catalysts.
Unraveling the Photocatalytic Mechanism of N2 Fixation on Single Ruthenium Sites

Abstract:Photocatalytic N2 fixation offers promise for ammonia synthesis, yet traditional photocatalysts encounter challenges such as low efficiency and short carrier lifetimes. Atomically precise ligand-metal nanoclusters emerge as a solution to address these issues, but the photophysical mechanism remains elusive. Inspired by the synthesis of Au4Ru2 NCs, we investigate the mechanism behind N2 activation on Au4Ru2, focusing on photoactivity and carrier dynamics. Our results reveal that vibration of the Ru-N bond in the low-frequency domain suppresses the deactivation process leading to a long lifetime of the excited N2. By the strategy of isoelectronic substitution, we identify the single Ru sites as the active sites for N2 activation. Furthermore, these ligand-protected M4Ru2 (M = Au, Ag, Cu) NCs show robust thermal stability in explicit solvation and decent photochemical activity for N2 activation and NH3 production. These findings have significant implications for the optimization of catalysts for sustainable ammonia synthesis.

It comprised of ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (NCs) confined by a hydrophobic molecular layer on the surface of 2D Ti3C2Tx, which can effectively modulate N2 adsorption mode and local microenvironment, enabling an exceptionally high NH3 yield rate and Faradaic efficiency at a lower potential of −0.25 V versus RHE. Electrochemical reduction of N2 (NRR) offers a sustainable approach for ammonia (NH3) synthesis, serving as a complementary to the traditional emission‐ and energy‐intensive Haber–Bosch process. However, it faces challenges in N2 activation and competing with pronounced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein an efficient electrocatalyst comprised of ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (NCs) confined by a hydrophobic molecular layer is developed on the surface of 2D Ti3C2Tx for NRR. These experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that 1) ultrafine Ru NCs dispersed on the Ti3C2Tx surface form paired active sites for N2 chemisorption in a unique tilted configuration with low‐energy activation 2) the hydrophobic molecular layer modulates the local microenvironment surrounding catalytically active sites, enabling efficient N2 accumulation while repelling H2O diffusion to the active sites on the Ti3C2Tx surface, thereby leading to an increased N2 concentration and suppressed HER. As a result, an exceptionally high NH3 yield rate of 33.5 μg h−1 mg−1cat and Faradaic efficiency of 65.3% are obtained at −0.25 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 m Na2SO4, outperforming those previously reported Ti3C2Tx‐derived electrocatalysts. This work provides a valuable strategy for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts by manipulating active sites and local microenvironments for efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia is a promising way to produce ammonia at mild condition. The design and preparation of an efficient catalyst with high ammonia selectivity is critical for the real applications. In this work, a series of transition metal (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, and Cd) atoms supported by gt-C3N4 (TM/gt-C3N4) are investigated as electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) based on density functional calculations. It is found that Mo/gt-C3N4 with a limiting potential of -0.82 V is the best catalyst for standing-on adsorbed N-2 cases. While for lying-on adsorbed N-2 cases, V/gt-C3N4 with a limiting potential of -0.79 V is better than other materials. It is believed that this work provides several promising candidates for the non-noble metal electrocatalysts for NRR at mild condition.

Abstract:Exploring highly efficient electrocatalysts and understanding the reaction mechanisms for hydrogen electrocatalysis, including hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media are conducive to the conversion of hydrogen energy. Herein, we reported a new strategy to boost the HER/HOR performances of ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles through nitrogen (N) modification. The obtained N-Ru/C exhibit remarkable catalytic performance, with normalized HOR exchange current density and mass activity of 0.56 mA/cm2 and 0.54 mA/μg, respectively, about 4 and 4.5 times higher than those of Ru/C, and even twofold enhancement compared to commercial Pt/C. Moreover, at the overpotential of 50 mV, the normalized HER current density of N-Ru/C is 5.5 times higher than that of Ru/C. Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results verify the electronic regulation of Ru after N incorporation, resulting in the optimized hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) and hence enhancing the HOR/HER performance.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ECNRR) has emerged as a clean, promising, and sustainable method for ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions due to the lower energy consumption, simple operation, and eco-friendly, which is regarded as an alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch industry. Nevertheless, the higher reaction overpotential and lower catalytic activity of traditional bulk metal catalysts are still the challenges for the ECNRR. In order to improve the catalytic performance and disclose the reaction mechanism, a series of catalysts with different active site structure, single-atom catalysts (SACs), double-atom-catalysts (DACs) and cluster-catalysts (CLCs), were designed by anchoring four transition metals (Mo, Fe, Co and Ni) on the three 2D-materials (BN, GR and GDY). The structure stability, N 2 adsorption ability, the NRR activity and selectivity of designed catalysts were evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). It is suggested that the 36 designed catalysts possess excellent thermal stabilities and the ECNRR catalytic activity of 25 catalysts are better than that of standard catalyst Ru(0001) surface because these catalysts satisfied with U L >-0.98 V and η value < 0.82 V. For the different catalyst carrier, the most prospect catalysts are Fe 1/ BN (E a = 0.49 eV, U L =-0.49 V, η = 0.33 V), Fe 2 /GR (E a = 0.04 eV, U L =-0.04 V). It is interesting that transition metal Fe exhibited excellent ECNRR reaction performance among the selected transition metals.
