Abstract:A plenty of uniform and spherical ruthenium nanoparticles were prepared by the adsorption–bioreduction method using the Cacumen Platycladi extract and supported on the activated carbon which was modified with nitric acid. The catalytic performance of as-prepared Ru/AC–HNO3 catalysts was investigated in the liquid phase hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. Different characterization techniques of BET, XRD, TEM, and FTIR were applied to understand the origin of the catalytic activity. With a comprehensive analysis of the experimental results, we can draw a conclusion that the higher dispersion of ruthenium nanoparticles and the smaller particle size give rise to the results which indicate a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic performance in comparison with the non-modified AC samples.
Single-Atomic Ruthenium Active Sites on Ti3C2 MXene with Oxygen-Terminated Surface Synchronize Enhanced Activity and Selectivity for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia

Abstract:Downsizing the catalyst to atom scale offers an effective way to maximize the atom utilization efficiency for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, single-atomic ruthenium (Ru) anchored on a chemically activated Ti3C2 with O-terminated groups (Ti3C2O) was designed to catalyze the NRR process. The catalyst achieved a superior activity and selectivity with ammonia yield rate of 27.56 mu g h(-1) mg(-1) and faradaic efficiency of 23.3 % at a low potential of -0.20 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. According to the atomic resolution images from aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, Ru sites on Ti3C2O achieved good dispersion on atomic scale. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis further demonstrated that the O-termination groups were successfully activated. Density functional theory calculations combined with experiments revealed that single Ru sites binding to four oxygen were the main reaction centers that permitted the hydrogenation of *NNH2 to *NHNH2 in a novel distal/alternating hybrid path while reducing the energy barrier of the potential-limiting step to 0.78 eV from 0.96 eV in the distal path alone or 1.18 eV in the alternating path alone, thereby significantly promoting the NRR dynamics.
Unraveling the Photocatalytic Mechanism of N2 Fixation on Single Ruthenium Sites

Abstract:Photocatalytic N2 fixation offers promise for ammonia synthesis, yet traditional photocatalysts encounter challenges such as low efficiency and short carrier lifetimes. Atomically precise ligand-metal nanoclusters emerge as a solution to address these issues, but the photophysical mechanism remains elusive. Inspired by the synthesis of Au4Ru2 NCs, we investigate the mechanism behind N2 activation on Au4Ru2, focusing on photoactivity and carrier dynamics. Our results reveal that vibration of the Ru-N bond in the low-frequency domain suppresses the deactivation process leading to a long lifetime of the excited N2. By the strategy of isoelectronic substitution, we identify the single Ru sites as the active sites for N2 activation. Furthermore, these ligand-protected M4Ru2 (M = Au, Ag, Cu) NCs show robust thermal stability in explicit solvation and decent photochemical activity for N2 activation and NH3 production. These findings have significant implications for the optimization of catalysts for sustainable ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:Nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions remains a significant challenge. Here, we report nitrogen fixation by Ru single-atom electrocatalytic reduction at room temperature and pressure. In contrast to Ru nanoparticles, single Ru sites supported on N-doped porous carbon greatly promoted electroreduction of aqueous N2 selectively to NH3, affording an NH3 formation rate of 3.665 m g N H 3 h − 1 m g Ru − 1 at −0.21 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Importantly, the addition of ZrO2 was found to significantly suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. An NH3 faradic efficiency of about 21% was achieved at a low overpotential (0.17 V), surpassing many other reported catalysts. Experiments combined with density functional theory calculations showed that the Ru sites with oxygen vacancies were major active centers that permitted stabilization of *NNH, destabilization of *H, and enhanced N2 adsorption. We envision that optimization of ZrO2 loading could further facilitate electroreduction of N2 at both high NH3 synthesis rate and faradic efficiency.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction ( eNRR) offers a promising strategy to synthesize ammonia at ambient conditions. However, the selectivity and yield of ammonia are greatly impeded by the slow kinetics of the eNRR and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we find that by growing Ru nanoparticles on rutile TiO2, the intimate electronic coupling between Ru nanoparticles and TiO2 support is able to greatly promote the first protonation of N-2 via an associative mechanism in the eNRR while suppressing theHER, resulting in a greatly improved ammonia Faradaic efficiency of 40.7% and yield of 10.4 mgNH3 h(-1) cm(-2) geometric area at -0.15 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.5 M K2SO4 aqueous solution at room temperature and ambient pressure. Our work provides a general approach to achieve selective electrochemical reaction by controlling the binding strength of reactive intermediates via interface engineering.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen into ammonia (NH 3 ) is a highly attractive but challenging route for NH 3 production. We propose to realize a synergetic work of multi reaction sites to overcome the limitation of sustainable NH 3 production. Herein, using ruthenium-sulfur-carbon (Ru-S-C) catalyst as a prototype, we show that the Ru/S dual-site cooperates to catalyse eletrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) at ambient conditions. With the combination of theoretical calculations, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and experimental observation, we demonstrate that such Ru/S dual-site cooperation greatly facilitates the activation and first protonation of N 2 in the rate-determining step of eNRR. As a result, Ru-S-C catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced eNRR performance compared with the routine Ru-N-C catalyst via a single-site catalytic mechanism. We anticipate that our specifically designed dual-site collaborative catalytic mechanism will open up a new way to offers new opportunities for advancing sustainable NH 3 production. Engineering local environment of ruthenium by defect-tuned SnO2 over carbon cloth for neutral-media N2 electroreduction

Abstract:Electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is of great potential as a sustainable and alternative technique to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process for NH3 production. However, its practical applications are impeded by the low NH3 yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE) mainly due to the inert N≡N triple bond and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, ruthenium-doped defect-rich SnO2 nanoparticles on carbon cloth (Ru–SnO2/CC) are synthesized for efficient electrocatalytic NRR under ambient conditions. The catalysts exhibit an NH3 yield of 4.83 μg h−1 cm− 2 with a FE of 17.01% at −0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.1 M Na2SO4. The integration of Ru species, SnO2 and oxygen vacancies leads a synergistic catalytic system, in which the semiconducting SnO2 particles not only stabilize the Ru active centers but also suppress the HER, while the oxygen vacancies in SnO2 lattice help to promote the N2 adsorption and enhance the activity of the Ru active centers. Overall, this synergy result in a unique local environment around the Ru active sites that favors the NRR process, which is further reinforced by the binder-free and facile electron transfer nature of CC, leading to the outstanding NRR catalytic activity and durability. These results outperform majority of the noble-metals-based electrocatalysts under similar conditions. This metal-doping tuned local environment manipulation may open up a promising avenue to the design and fabrication of efficient catalysts for N2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Stable and portable ammonia (NH3) is a promising, low-cost, and environment-friendly medium for energy storage. How to achieve the rapid production of NH3 from reducing NOx- in aqueous systems and industrial wastewater via electrochemical methods remains the main challenge for practical application on a large scale. The corresponding electrocatalysts as the key materials in electrochemical devices suffer from low activity, especially in neutral systems. In this work, we successfully elevated the activity of the bench-mark Ru electrocatalysts to more than 30 times via construction of rectifying contact of Ru metals and noble carbons. We theoretically predicted and then rationally designed a new type of P-O rich carbon with large work functions as "noble" supports to attract a pronounced number of electrons from Ru metals at the rectifying interface. The resulting electron deficiency of Ru metals largely promotes the pre-adsorption and activation of NOx- anions, providing high Faradaic efficiencies (> 96%) and record-high turnover frequency values for universal NO2- and NO3- reduction in neutral solution.

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) loaded catalysts show high activity and selectivity for ammonia (NH3) synthesis via electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO3-), but their practical application is still restricted by their high cost and insufficient stability. Herein, a multi-component electrocatalyst of Ru nanoclusters loaded on phosphorus-doped/phosphate-modified and oxygen vacancy (O-V)-rich Fe/Fe3O4 composite nanorods (Ru@P-Fe/Fe3O4) to synergistically promote electrocatalytic NO3- reduction reaction (NO3-RR)-to-NH3 performance via strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is reported. Impressively, the best Ru@P-Fe/Fe3O4 catalyst exhibits outstanding NO3-RR activity, selectivity, and durability in 0.1 M KNO3 + 0.5 M KOH solution, with an NH3 yield rate of 14.37 +/- 0.21 mg(NH3) h(-1) cm(-2) (1710.71 +/- 25 mg(NH3) h(-1) mg(Ru)(-1)) at -0.75 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE), an NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97.2% at -0.55 V vs. RHE, and a superior stability over 50 h, suppressing most of reported Fe-based and Ru-based electrocatalysts. The characterizations and theoretical calculations unveil that the SMSI between Ru nanoclusters and P-Fe/Fe3O4 composite nanorods can promote the generation of O-V, tune the electronic structure of Ru species, and stabilize Ru nanoclusters, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier of NO3-RR-to-NH3, inhibiting the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, and boosting the NH3 yield rate NH3 FE, and stability.

Abstract:Nitrogen co-doping with ruthenium mesoporous carbons (Ru-N-MC) was prepared by co-impregnation of sucrose and urea on a RuCl3/SiO2 template followed by a thermal carbonization process. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Ba/Ru-N-MC catalyst in ammonia synthesis is 0.16 s-1 under reaction conditions of 400 °C, pressure of 10 MPa and space velocity of 10 000 h-1. The superior catalytic performance of the Ba/Ru-N-MC is proposed to originate from the strong metal-support interaction between Ru nanoparticles (NPs) and carbon support. In addition to the activity, the Ba/Ru-N-MC catalyst exhibits a long-term stability for 35 h without significant deactivation.

Abstract:Inspired by natural enzyme catalysis, an efficient and stable electrocatalyst is developed for electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction under ambient conditions. It comprised of ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (NCs) confined by a hydrophobic molecular layer on the surface of 2D Ti3C2Tx, which can effectively modulate N2 adsorption mode and local microenvironment, enabling an exceptionally high NH3 yield rate and Faradaic efficiency at a lower potential of −0.25 V versus RHE. Electrochemical reduction of N2 (NRR) offers a sustainable approach for ammonia (NH3) synthesis, serving as a complementary to the traditional emission‐ and energy‐intensive Haber–Bosch process. However, it faces challenges in N2 activation and competing with pronounced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein an efficient electrocatalyst comprised of ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (NCs) confined by a hydrophobic molecular layer is developed on the surface of 2D Ti3C2Tx for NRR. These experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that 1) ultrafine Ru NCs dispersed on the Ti3C2Tx surface form paired active sites for N2 chemisorption in a unique tilted configuration with low‐energy activation 2) the hydrophobic molecular layer modulates the local microenvironment surrounding catalytically active sites, enabling efficient N2 accumulation while repelling H2O diffusion to the active sites on the Ti3C2Tx surface, thereby leading to an increased N2 concentration and suppressed HER. As a result, an exceptionally high NH3 yield rate of 33.5 μg h−1 mg−1cat and Faradaic efficiency of 65.3% are obtained at −0.25 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 m Na2SO4, outperforming those previously reported Ti3C2Tx‐derived electrocatalysts. This work provides a valuable strategy for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts by manipulating active sites and local microenvironments for efficient electrocatalysis.

Crystallographic and Morphological Sensitivity of N2 Activation over Ruthenium

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) serves as a promising catalyst for ammonia synthesis via the Haber-Bosch process, identification of the structure sensitivity to improve the activity of Ru is important but not fully explored yet. We present here density functional theory calculations combined with micro-kinetic simulations on nitrogen molecule activation, a crucial step in ammonia synthesis, over a variety of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) and face-center cubic (fcc) Ru facets. Hcp {213¯0} facet exhibits the highest activity toward N2 dissociation in hcp Ru, followed by the (0001) monatomic step sites. The other hcp Ru facets have N2 dissociation rates at least three orders lower. Fcc {211} facet shows the best performance for N2 activation in fcc Ru, followed by {311}, which indicates stepped surfaces make great contributions to the overall reactivity. Although hcp Ru {213¯0} facet and (0001) monatomic step sites have lower or comparable activation barriers compared with fcc Ru {211} facet, fcc Ru is proposed to be more active than hcp Ru for N2 conversion due to the exposure of the more favorable active sites over step surfaces in fcc Ru. This work provides new insights into the crystal structure sensitivity of N2 activation for mechanistic understanding and rational design of ammonia synthesis over Ru catalysts.
Single Ru–N4 Site-Embedded Porous Carbons for Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Abstract:Ammonia is an effective feedstock for chemicals, fertilizers, and energy storage. The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is an alternative, efficient, and clean technology for ammonia production, relative to the traditional Haber–Bosch method. Single-metal catalysts are widely studied in the field of NRR. However, very limited conclusions have been made on how to precisely modulate the coordination environment of the single-metal-atom sites to boost catalytic NRR performance. Herein, we report a 5,7-membered carbon ring-involved porous carbon (PC) preparation toward single-atom Ru-embedded PCs. As electrocatalysts, such materials exhibit surprisingly promising catalytic NRR properties with an NH3 yield rate of up to 67.8 ± 4.9 μg h–1 mgcat–1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 19.5 ± 0.6%, exceeding those of most of the reported single-atom NRR catalysts. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure demonstrates that the presence of topological defects increases the Ru–N bond from 1.48 to 1.56 Å, modulating the coordination environment of the single-atom Ru active sites. Density functional theory-calculated results demonstrate that the adsorption of N2 onto single-atom Ru surrounded by topological defects extends the N≡N bond to 1.146 Å, weakening the strength of N≡N and making it susceptible to the NRR. All in all, this work provides a new design strategy by involving topological defects and corresponding large polarization around the Ru single atom to boost the catalytic NRR performance. Such a concept can also be applied to many other kinds of catalysts for energy storage and conversion.
In-situ electrochemical reconstruction and modulation of adsorbed hydrogen coverage in cobalt/ruthenium-based catalyst boost electroreduction of nitrate to ammonia

Abstract:The electroreduction of nitrate offers a promising, sustainable, and decentralized route to generate valuable ammonia. However, a key challenge in the nitrate reduction reaction is the energy efficiency of the reaction, which requires both a high ammonia yield rate and a high Faradaic efficiency of ammonia at a low working potential (≥-0.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode). We propose a bimetallic Co-B/Ru12 electrocatalyst which utilizes complementary effects of Co-B and Ru to modulate the quantity of adsorbed hydrogen and to favor the specific hydrogenation for initiating nitrate reduction reaction at a low overpotential. This effect enables the catalyst to achieve a Faradaic efficiency for ammonia of 90.4 ± 9.2% and a remarkable half-cell energy efficiency of 40.9 ± 4% at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. The in-situ electrochemical reconstruction of the catalyst contributes to boosting the ammonia yield rate to a high level of 15.0 ± 0.7 mg h-1 cm-2 at -0.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. More importantly, by employing single-entity electrochemistry coupled with identical location transmission electron microscopy, we gain systematic insights into the correlation between the increase in the catalyst's active sites and its structural transformations during the nitrate reduction reaction.

Abstract:It is still a grand challenge to exploit efficient catalysts to achieve sustainable photocatalytic N2 reduction under ambient conditions. Here, we developed a ruthenium-based single-atom catalyst anchored on defect-rich TiO2 nanotubes (denoted Ru-SAs/Def-TNs) as a model system for N2 fixation. The constructed Ru-SAs/Def-TNs exhibited a catalytic efficiency of 125.2 μmol g-1 h-1, roughly 6 and 13 times higher than those of the supported Ru nanoparticles and Def-TNs, respectively. Through ultrafast transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy, we revealed the relationship between catalytic activity and photoexcited electron dynamics in such a model SA catalytic system. The unique ligand-to-metal charge-transfer state formed in Ru-SAs/Def-TNs was found to be responsible for its high catalytic activity because it can greatly promote the transfer of photoelectrons from Def-TNs to the Ru-SAs center and the subsequent capture by Ru-SAs. This work sheds light on the origin of the high performance of SA catalysts from the perspective of photoexcited electron dynamics and hence enriches the mechanistic understanding of SA catalysis.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NRA) seriously suffers from slow kinetics and low selectivity due to its eight-electron transfer process and complex reaction intermediates. Herein, Ru-based nanotubes (NTs) were designed to enhance the electrocatalytic activity of NRA. Significantly, the metallic Ru NTs endowed remarkable ammonia (NH3) yield rate (v NH3) of 40.6 mg h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) at -1.20 V vs SCE and the highest NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE NH3) of 98.4% at -1.10 V vs SCE under ambient conditions, which are superior to those of RuO2 NTs (v NH3 : 0.52 mg h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1), FE NH3 : 18.2%). Both experimental and theoretical results have proved that the Ru metallic state is more beneficial to N-O bond breaking and hydrogenation than the oxidized state, improving the kinetics and selectivity of NRA.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of nitrite (NO 2 – ) not only removes NO 2 – contaminant but also produces high-added value ammonia (NH 3 ). This process, however, needs efficient and selective catalysts for NO 2 − -to-NH 3 conversion. In this study, Ruthenium doped titanium dioxide nanoribbon array supported on Ti plate (Ru–TiO 2 /TP) is proposed as an efficient electrocatalyst for the reduction of NO 2 − to NH 3 . When operated in 0.1 M NaOH containing NO 2 – , such Ru–TiO 2 /TP achieves an ultra-large NH 3 yield of 1.56 mmol h −1 cm −2 and a super-high Faradaic efficiency of 98.9%, superior to its TiO 2 /TP counterpart (0.46 mmol h −1 cm −2 , 74.1%). Furthermore, the reaction mechanism is studied by theoretical calculation.

Abstract:Ruthenium (Ru) is an attractive potential alternative to platinum as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), in virtue of its high catalytic selectivity and relatively low price. In this work, a series of well-dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Ru-clusters on carbon black (Ru x N y /C) were prepared by pyrolyzing different Ru-containing sandwich compounds as the Ru sources. The higher thermal stability of these complexed sandwich precursors (bis(1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) Ru(II) monomer, dichloro(p-cymene) Ru(II) dimer, and chloro(1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) Ru(II) tetramer) affords the control of coordinated state for the resulting Ru-clusters, in comparison of that derived from ruthenium chlorides. After the pyrolysis treatment, the Ru coordinated state in Ru x N y /C, with the Ru–N and Ru–Ru bonds, still showed the structural inheritance from the Ru(II) monomer, dimer, and tetramer, but using ruthenium chlorides as the Ru source resulted in the nanoscale Ru agglomerations. The ORR testing exhibited that the Ru x N y /C sample derived from the Ru(II) tetramer (Ru x N y /C-T) presents the higher catalytic activity than the other obtained samples in either alkaline or acidic electrolytes. Even in the acidic electrolyte, Ru x N y /C-T shows the comparable ORR activity to that of Pt/C catalysts, and it shows the superior tolerance against methanol and CO. The X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that these tetra-nuclear Ru-clusters could be the most active site due to their broadened d-orbital bands and lower energy d-band center than those of other subnano species and nanocrystals, and their favorable Yeager-type adsorption of O 2 -molecules is also contributed to promoting O–O bond cleavage and accelerating the ORR process.
