Abstract:Based on the property of Jacobi polynomials and the solution of conditional extremum,the approximate merging of 4 neighbouring triangular Bézier surfaces with boundary constraints are discussed.With the help of the orthonormality of Jacobi polynomials and the Bernstein-Jacobi transformation matrix,the distance function with respect to L2 norm between the surfaces before and after approximate merging is obtained.Meanwhile,based on the boundary constraints and the boundary continuity at three corners,control points are constrained by linear equations.With the help of Lagrange multipliers,we obtain the optimal approximate merging surface with minimal distance.Both the control points of approximate merging surfaces and the precise error of approximation are expressed explicitly in matrix form.The degree elevation could reduce the merging error.Finally,several numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.

Abstract:An efficient algorithm of bounding interval triangular B-B (Bernstein-Beier) surfaces with lower degree interval triangular B-B surfaces is presented. The algorithm is based on linear programming techniques. An analytical method is also given for degree reduction of one order. The result of degree reduction approximation can be used for the purpose of data transmission among various CAD systems, as well as for the saving of computation time for some geometric operations.

Abstract:Polygonal vertices convexo-concave determining is one of the fundamental issues in Computer Graphics. In this paper, plane space is separated into 2 region defined as positive region and negative region based on the direction and the stretched of the line segment. Accordingly transform identification of convexity or concavity of the next vertices into identification of the region position. Consequently the operation of multiplication can be averted. In order to do the best in practical determining, 3 areas is separated of the plane space, whereas not the same as earlier. These area are based on two horizontal lines, two vertical lines and two 45°diagonal lines through the vertices of the line segment. Because the partition is based on the polygon vertices and it has dynamic, therefore it's a dynamic distinct partition. These areas are defined as positive area, negative area or mixed area. In the case of the positive area or the negative area, we can confirm the convexity or concavity of the vertices through simple distinguishing. The result of test indicates it is a simple, highly efficient and reliable algorithm with high speed requires only (n/4) multiplication and(12n) comparisons.

Abstract:In practical applications, we usually use surfaces of lower degree and less number of patches to interpolate irregular data points so that operations applied on these surfaces can run efficiently and robustly. In this paper, we propose a recursive and adaptive method to construct a (first order geometric continuity) cubic triangular Bernstein-Bezier surface over an arbitrary triangulation derived from a given set of irregular data points. For a surface triangulation of n sample points in 3D spaces, a monotonic sequence of triangulations is constructed by removing a boundary vertex P and all triangles sharing with P at each step, where is composed of a single triangle. Generation of Interpolatory Smooth Bézier Patches over Quadrilateral Mesh Based on C-C Subdivision

Abstract:Constructing smooth surface over arbitrary topological quadrilateral mesh is an important issue in CAGD. This paper presents an algorithm for generating smoothly connected Bézier patches that interpolate the mesh vertices over a quadrilateral mesh based on C-C subdivision. The input quadrilateral mesh is taken as the initial control mesh of C-C subdivision, and the limit surface of C-C subdivision is converted into Bézier patches. For each facet of the quadrilateral mesh, a Bézier patch is obtained. The Bézier patches are G 1-continuous along boundaries connecting to extraordinary points and C 2-continuous everywhere else. For resolving the shrinking problem of C-C subdivision, a recursive method to expand the initial control mesh is proposed based on the deviation analysis. The final surface generated from the expanded mesh interpolates the vertices of the input quadrilateral mesh. The experimental data show that the presented algorithm is effective and the constructed surface has good smoothness and continuity. It can be well applied to reconstruct smooth surface from quadrilateral mesh.

By the procedures of near surface point iterating and border points travers-ing, the whole intersection curve traversing many patches can be traced from one initial intersection point.lnserting intersection points as measure points into surface, retriangulating grids, splitting triangular grids andmeasure points along intersection curve, the original surface can be trimmed into two composite triangularBeier surfaces. The experimental results show that this method is simple, robust and applicable for surfacemodeling.

Abstract:In CAD analysis of geometric shapes, triangular Bezier surfaces are more difficult to use than rectangular Bezier patches. This paper introduces two algorithms for triangular Bezier surfaces. The first algorithm describes two methods including the small curvature surface fitting method and the large curvature surface fitting method. The second algorithm proposes a method to explicitly transform a rectangular Bezier patch mesh into an equivalent triangular Bezier patch. A recursion equation can be used to increase the triangular Bezier patch mesh density. Triangular Bezier surface algorithms are useful for engineers engaged in reverse engineering and have been validated in colour CRT correcting lens design.

Abstract:The article proposes a new method for finding the triangle-triangle intersection in 3D space, based on the use of computer graphics algorithms -- cutting off segments on the plane when moving and rotating the beginning of the coordinate axes of space. This method is obtained by synthesis of two methods of cutting off segments on the plane -- Cohen-Sutherland algorithm and FC-algorithm. In the proposed method, the problem of triangle-triangle intersection in 3D space is reduced to a simpler and less resource-intensive cut-off problem on the plane. The main feature of the method is the developed scheme of coding the points of the cut-off in relation to the triangle segment plane. This scheme allows you to get rid of a large number of costly calculations. In the article the cases of intersection of triangles at parallelism, intersection and coincidence of planes of triangles are considered. The proposed method can be used in solving the problem of tetrahedron intersection, using the finite element method, as well as in image processing.

A Blending Method Based on the Intersection of Composite Triangular Bezier Surface and Plane

Abstract:Starting from initial intersection points, using the topology among triangular Bezier patches, the intersection curves between composite triangular Bezier surface and plane can be traced continuously. Having obtained the intersection curves, a series of measured points can be derived by refning point correspondences, calculating border point between two patches, tracing end points of intersection curve, constructing and discrete cross sections. Then a blend surface that is G' continuous with base surface can be constructed. The blend surface has the same topology as base surface. Experiments show that the method is simple, robust, and applicable to CAD modeling in reverse engineering. It is believed that the method will be widely used in surface modeling and manufacturing in automotive and aviation industries.

Abstract:To repair the complex holes in triangular meshes,a novel algorithm based on the concept of edge-expansion was proposed.The least square plane of the hole boundary was computed,and the projecting polygon was obtained by projecting the hole boundary on the least square plane.When the projecting polygon existed self-intersecting,the edge-expansion algorithm was used for each intersecting edge to obtain several new triangular faces,and then the complex hole was divided into several sub-holes.The complex hole-splitting process above-mentioned was incrementally employed for each sub-hole until all sub-holes were divided into simple ones,and then each divided simple hole was repaired with planar triangulation method.Triangular mesh with uniformly shaped hole was achieved using subdivision techniques.The experimental results show that the presented hole-repairing algorithm can work well for a variety of complex holes in the triangular mesh,and can better preserve the detailed features of the original triangular mesh.

As the number of times for subdividing a triangular Bezier patch can be a determined prior, according to the given tolerance, the subdividing process can be conduced consecutively without checking for linearity after each subdivision. Abstract:Great efforts have been devoted to seamless quadrangulation of triangular mesh for its practical application in constructing surface patches. This type of algorithm sets up a parameterization on the triangular mesh and a re-meshing is carried out then to the quadrangulate mesh. The paper proposes a novel algorithm to quad- segment the triangular mesh. Our algorithm combines the techniques of parameterization with re-triangulation and clustering which segment the triangular mesh instead of re- meshing based on the parameterization results. Thus the algorithm avoids the process of solving linear systems of equations and local parameterization for adjusments. Also, the robustness of the algorithms is enhanced because ofthe possible ill-conditioned status of linear systems of equations arises in the previous algorithms. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive mesh fitting algorithm that fits a triangular model with G^1 smoothly stitching bi-quintic Bezier patches. Our algorithm first segments the input mesh into a set of quadrilateral patches, whose boundaries form a quadrangle mesh. For each boundary of each quadrilateral patch, we construct a normal curve and a boundary-fitting curve, which fit the normal and position of its boundary vertices respectively. By interpolating the normal and boundary-fitting curves of each quadrilateral patch with a Bezier patch, an initial G^1 smoothly stitching Bezier patches is generated. We perform this patch-based fitting scheme in an adaptive fashion by recursively subdividing the underlying quadrilateral into four sub-patches. The experimental results show that our algorithm achieves precision-ensured Bezier patches with G^1 continuity and meets the requirements of reverse engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate how to topologically and geometrically characterize the intersection relations between a movable convex polygon A and a set /spl Xi/ of possibly overlapping polygons fixed in the plane. More specifically, a subset /spl Phi//spl sube//spl Xi/ is called an intersection relation if there exists a placement of A that intersects, and only intersects, /spl Phi/. The objective of this paper is to design an efficient algorithm that finds a finite and discrete representation of all of the intersection relations between A and /spl Xi/. Past related research only focuses on the complexity of the free space of the configuration space between A and /spl Xi/ and how to move or place an object in this free space. However, there are many applications that require the knowledge of not only the free space, but also the intersection relations. Examples are presented to demonstrate the rich applications of the formulated problem on intersection relations.

Abstract:How to obtain intersection of curves and surfaces is a fundamental problem in many areas such as computer graphics, CAD/CAM, computer animation, and robotics. Especially, how to deal with singular cases, such as tangency or superposition, is a key problem in obtaining intersection results. A method for solving the intersection problem based on the coordinate transformation is presented. With the Lagrange multiplier method, the minimum distance between the center of a circle and a quadric surface is given as well. Experience shows that the coordinate transformation could significantly simplify the method for calculating intersection results. The location of the tangent point is revised according to the tangency condition. It can improve the stability of the intersection of given curves and surfaces in singularity cases. The new algorithm is applied in a three dimensional CAD software (GEMS), produced by Tsinghua University.

Abstract:Intersection tests for spacial triangular facets is one of the key techniques for collision and interference detection in material cutting algorithms for numerically controlled machining. A fast, spacial triangular facet intersection test algorithm was developed based on vector operations that avoids test faults due to calculational errors. The algorithm deals with all relationships between triangular facets such as being in the same plane or different planes. The algorithm efficiency and accuracy is much better than traditional algorithms.

Abstract:Triangular Bezier surface is widely used for modelling complex object. However most of geometric modelling systems do not support it. It is necessary to convert it into tensor-product Bezier surface. In this paper, a new conversion algorithm is proposed to convert a triangular Bezier surface into an optimal trimmed tensor-product Bezier surface by using polynomial interpolation. Then the proposed algorithm is compared with previous algorithms in both computational cost and numerical accuracy. The results show that the proposed algorithm has both computational and storage advantages over previous algorithms. Its numerical accuracy is comparable with the previous ones for cases of the degree less than 6.
