Abstract:Characterizations of strongly compact spaces are given based on the existence of a star-countable open refinement for every increasing open cover. It is proved that a countably paracompact normal space (a perfectly normal space or a monotonically normal space) is strongly paracompact if and only if every increasing open cover of the space has a star-countable open refinement. Moreover, it is shown that a space is linearly provided that every increasing open cover of the space has a point-countable open refinement.

Abstract:A collection D of subsets of a space is minimal if each element of D contains a point which is not contained in any other element of D. Abase of a topological space is sigma-minimal if it can be written as a union of countably many minimal collections. We will construct a compact linearly ordered space X satisfying that X is not metrizable and every subspace of X has a sigma-minimal base for its relative topology. This answers a problem of Bennett and Lutzer in the negative.

Abstract:We show several characterizations of weakly compact sets in Banach spaces. Given a bounded closed convex set C of a Banach space X, the following statements are equivalent: (i) C is weakly compact; (ii) C can be affinely uniformly embedded into a reflexive Banach space; (iii) there exists an equivalent norm on X which has the w2R-property on C; (iv) there is a continuous and w*-lower semicontinuous seminorm p on the dual X* with p >= sup(C) such that p(2) is everywhere Frechet differentiable in X*; and as a consequence, the space X is a weakly compactly generated space if and only if there exists a continuous and w*-l.s.c. Frechet smooth (not necessarily equivalent) norm on X*.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:In this article, we introduce two notions which are called property (sigma-A) and property (sigma-B). They are generalizations of property (A) and property (B), respectively. Every space with a point-countable base (or sigma-NSR pair-base) satisfies property (sigma-A). Every space with the Collins-Roscoe property satisfies property (sigma-B). We show that every compact Hausdorff space with property (sigma-A) is metrizable. Thus some known conclusions can be generalized. This shows that property (sigma-A) plays a key role in the metrizability of compact Hausdorff spaces. We show that the properties of property (sigma-A) and property (sigma-B) are closed under finite products. Every finite product of T-1-spaces which satisfy property (sigma-B) (property (sigma-A), sigma-sheltering (F), sigma-well-ordered (F)) is hereditarily a D-space. If (X, T) satisfies omega(1)-sheltering (F), then (X, T-omega) is hereditarily a D-space. We show that if a space Xsatisfie s omega(1)-sheltering (F) and every countable discrete subspace of Xis closed, then Xis hereditarily a D-space. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by Z.Q. Feng and J.E. Porter in 2015. We finally give examples to show that there exists a space which has property (sigma-A) but it does not have a point-countable base and there exists a space which has property (C) but it does not have property (sigma-A). Abstract:In this paper, we study some properties of s-spaces. By means of the addition theorem and the theory of remainders,the following properties are established: (1)if an s-space X is the union of a countable family of metrizable subspaces,then X is sequential;(2)if G is a non-locally compact topological group with a compactification bG such that Y =bG\G is hereditarily an s-space, then either G is separable and metrizable, or G is σ-compact, which generalize and improve some results about s-spaces by Arhangel'skii.
