Abstract:The self-absorption effect is one of the main bottlenecks for the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. In this Letter, LIBS assisted by laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) is proposed to solve this problem. The process of LSA in self-absorption reduction is discussed and confirmed. The serious self-absorption phenomena of spectral lines (K, Mn, and Al) were not observed in LSA-LIBS. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of K, Mn, and Al was reduced by about 58%, 25%, and 52%, respectively. The results demonstrate the capability of this approach to self-absorption reduction in the LIBS technique.

Abstract:Self-absorption effect seriously affects the accuracy of the quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), confining the further development of the technology. In this study, three laser wavelengths at ultraviolet (355 nm), visible light (532 nm), and infrared (1064 nm) were selected to study the influence of laser wavelength on self-absorption effect in LIBS. The effect of the laser wavelength on the spectral stability was also investigated. The results showed that when the wavelength was 1064 nm compared with the wavelength of 355 nm and 532 nm, the full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of aluminum (Al) I 396.2 nm were reduced by 39 % and 23 %, the FWHM of potassium (K) I 766.5 nm were reduced by 58 % and 22 %. In addition, the laser wavelength was also closely related to the stability of the spectral intensity. In comparison with the laser wavelengths of 532 nm and 1064 nm, the best spectral repeatability occurred when the laser wavelength was 355 nm. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the K I 766.5 nm was only 2.5 %. The results indicate that laser wavelength affects the self-absorption effect and spectral stability of LIBS, which means selecting an appropriate laser wavelength can reduce self-absorption and improve stability.

Abstract:The self-absorption effect seriously affects the accuracy of determination in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we proposed to reduce multielemental self-absorption within a wide spectral range (200-900 nm) by using microwave-assisted excitation in LIBS (MAE-LIBS). Self-absorption reduction of sodium (Na), potassium (K), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), and calcium (Ca) in potassium feldspar using MAE-LIBS was investigated. The mechanisms of self-absorption reduction in MAE-LIBS were also investigated. The results show that the serious self-absorption of spectral lines (Na and K) was reduced. The full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of Na I 589.0 nm, Na I 589.6 nm, K I 766.5 nm, and K I 769.9 nm in potassium feldspar were reduced by 43%, 43%, 53%, and 47%, respectively. MAE-LIBS also has a little FWHM reduction for spectral lines with weak self-absorption. The results demonstrate that MAE-LIBS can simultaneously reduce multielemental self-absorption.

Abstract:Self-absorption seriously affects the accuracy and stability of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). To reduce the effect of self-absoiption, we investigated the temporal evolution of the self-absorption effect by establishing exponential calibration curves. Meanwhile, the temporal evolution mechanism of the self-absorption effect was also investigated. The results indicated that self-absorption was weak at the early stage of plasma expansion. For determination of manganese (Mn) in steel, as an example, the concentration of upper bound of linearity (C-int) was 2.000 wt. % at the early stage of plasma expansion (in a time window of 0.2-0.4 mu s)-much higher than 0.363 wt. % at a traditional optimization time window (2-3 mu s). The accuracy and stability of quantitative analysis at the time window of 0.2-0.4 mu s was also much better than at the time window of 2-3 mu s. This work provides a simple method for improving quantitative analysis performance and avoiding the self-absorption effect in LIBS. Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.

Abstract:Fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS) has been employed in many applications because of the flexibility of optical fiber cable. However, the inhomogeneous elemental distribution of plasmas can cause a self-absorption effect and, hence, significantly hinder the determination of FO-LIBS. Here, to solve this flaw, we took iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) elements in aluminum alloy as examples to investigate the self-absorption reduction and accuracy improvement using spatially resolved FO-LIBS. Spatially resolved FO-LIBS means the spectra were collected at different positions along the direction parallel to the surface of the sample rather than at the center of the plasma. With this method, the self-absorption effect could be improved by selecting different acquisition positions along the X-axis. The root mean square error of cross-validations (RMSECV) for Fe, Mg, and Zn were reduced from 0.388, 0.348, and 0.097 wt. % to 0.172, 0.224, and 0.024 wt. %, respectively. Generally, spatial resolution is an effective method of self-absorption reduction and accuracy improvement in FO-LIBS.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising analytical spectroscopy technology based on spectroscopic analysis of the radiation emitted by laser-produced plasma. However, for quantitative analysis by LIBS, the so-called self-absorption effects on the spectral lines, which affect plasma characteristics, emission line shapes, calibration curves, etc, can no longer be neglected. Hence, understanding and determining the self-absorption effects are of utmost importance to LIBS research. The purpose of this review is to provide a global overview of self-absorption in LIBS on the issues of experimental observations and adverse effects, physical mechanisms, correction or elimination approaches, and utilizations in the past century. We believe that better understanding and effective solving the self-absorption effect will further enhance the development and maturity of LIBS.

Abstract:Optical emission spectroscopic techniques, such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), require an optimal state of plasma for accurate quantitative elemental analysis. Three fundamental assumptions must be satisfied in order for analytical results to be accurate: local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), optically thin plasma, and stoichiometric ablation. But real-life plasma often fails to satisfy these conditions, especially the optical thinness of plasma, resulting in the reabsorption of emitted radiation called self-absorption. To study the self-absorption effect, we simulated optically thick emission spectrum at typical laser-produced plasma conditions. The simulation of the spectrum involves four stages, including the estimation of the ratio of the number density of various ionisation states in the plasma using the Saha-Boltzmann equation, the peak intensity of a spectral line using the Boltzmann equation, the full-width half maxima of each spectral line using the Stark broadening method, and the generation of full spectra by providing a Lorentzian profile for each spectral line. Then self-absorption is applied to the simulated spectrum. We investigated the dependence of the self-absorption coefficient on the plasma temperature, optical path length, and element concentration in the sample. Self-absorption decreases with increased plasma temperature, whereas it increases with increasing optical path length and analyte concentration. We also investigated the role of self-absorption in quantitative analysis by calibration-free LIBS with and without resonance lines of the binary alloy (Mg 50% & Ca 50%). We observed a drastic reduction in error from 27% to 2% in the composition estimation when excluding resonance lines.

Abstract:It is still challenging to apply laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to slurry on-stream analysis due to the moisture in slurry samples causing the low spectral intensity. In this work, a high-frequency pulsed fiber laser was proposed to quickly remove the moisture in slurry samples at the detection point for the first time. The spectral emission intensity and line broadening due Stark effect were investigated for the dual-pulse of fiber laser assisted LIBS (FL-LIBS) mode and signal-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) mode. It found that the spectral intensities of Fe and Ca elements were enhanced, while the matrix elements of H and O elements were decreased. Moreover, the currently available spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma, such Boltzmann plot have been used to measure the plasma temperature, while the hydrogen line broadening have been used in the characterization of electron densities. It reveals the type of higher-temperature and lower-density plasma was obtained. The experimental results demonstrated that the fiber laser had the potential to improve LIBS signal intensity and spectral resolution for aqueous matrix samples.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an ideal real-time on-line method for the detection of minor elements in alloys. However, in the case of high-density plasma generated by LIBS, the self-absorption is usually an undesired effect because it not only reduces the true line intensity, introduces nonlinear effects in the growth of line intensity versus the content of the emitting species, but also affects the characterization parameters of the plasma, and finally affects the accuracy of quantitative analysis. Since the plasma electron temperature ( T ), radiation particle number density and absorption path length ( Nl ) determine the degree of self-absorption and affect the corrected spectral line intensity, a new self-absorption correction method based on temperature iteration is proposed. This method obtains the initial T through spectral line intensity, and calculates the self-absorption coefficient SA based on the initial Nl parameter to correct the spectral line intensity. Then a new T is obtained from the new spectral line intensity and the new SA is calculated to further correct the spectral line intensity. Through continuous calculation and correction of these two parameters, self-absorption correction is finally achieved. The experimental results of alloy steel samples showed that the linearity of Boltzmann plots was increased from 0.867 without self-absorption correction to 0.974 with self-absorption correction, and the linear correlation coefficient R 2 of the single variable calibration curve for Mn element increased from 0.971 to 0.997. The relative error of elemental content measurement has significantly improved from 4.32% without self-absorption correction to 1.23% with self-absorption correction. Compared with the commonly applied self-absorption correction methods, this method has obvious advantages of simpler programming, higher computation efficiency, and its independency of the availability or accuracy of Stark broadening coefficients. Moreover, this method can directly obtain the radiation particle number density and absorption path length, which is beneficial to the diagnosis and quantitative analysis of plasma.

Abstract:The self-absorption effect reduces the accuracy of element measurements in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) experiments. In this paper, the mechanism of the self-absorption effect was studied. First, we established a plasma concentration distribution model and plasma dynamics model of the plasma expansion in three directions during LIBS based on physical laws. By coupling a plasma concentration distribution model with a self-absorption model, the LIBS self-absorption effect value model was obtained. Second, the models were applied in a numerical simulation to determine plasma spatial distribution characteristics during LIBS. The self-absorption effect values of spectral lines were calculated. Finally, experiments were conducted with an optical spectrometer to obtain the Na, K, and Al atomic emission spectra. On the theoretical plane, the Boltzmann plot method and the Stark broadening method were used to obtain the plasma characteristic parameters. The spectral line intensities of the Na, K and Al atom lines were obtained without and with microwave-assisted LIBS experiments for comparison. The experimental analysis showed that during the LIBS process, microwave assistance can enhance the emission spectroscopy intensity and inhibit or reduce the LIBS self-absorption effect. The experimental samples were in good agreement with those of theoretical simulation, indicating the effectiveness and practicability of the created LIBS self-absorption effect value model, which can improve the optimization of the LIBS process.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), as a new material composition detection technology, has lots of advantages such as rapid, real-time, micro-damage, in-situ, multi-element analysis and so on. At present, it has been widely used in environmental monitoring, food safety, mineral processing and metallurgy, biomedicine, space exploration and other fields. However, due to the self-absorption, the spectral intensity is reduced. In severe cases, the line profile is even sunken in the centrum ("self-reversal"). The linear coefficient of calibration curve decreases, resulting in the deterioration of the accuracy of element detection, so that large-scale commercial applications cannot be realized. Therefore, the exploration of the self-absorption effect and its correction methods has always been the research hotspot. In this review, the progress of the correction method and the physical mechanism of self-absorption are reviewed. The main correction methods are summarized from the perspectives of experiment parameters optimization, physical assist device, self-absorption model and correction algorithm, respectively. The advantages and disadvantages of the primary correction methods are compared and analyzed. The experiment parameters optimization has the advantages of simple principle and operation. The effect of self-absorption reduction of laser stimulated absorption LIBS (LSA-LIBS) is stable. Microwave assisted excitation LIBS (MAE-LIBS) can reduce the self-absorption effect of multiple elements simultaneously and cost low. The self-absorption coefficient method can directly quantify the degree of self-absorption effect, has simple calculation steps and requires less plasma parameters. The self-absorption correction algorithm based on internal reference line has high calculation efficiency and obvious correction effect. Optically thin method can directly obtain optically thin spectral lines to avoid theoretical errors. Finally, the future research direction and development trend of self-absorption is prospected in our opinion.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) assisted with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was introduced to detect trace aluminum in steatite ceramics in this work. The mechanism and transition process of laser-induced aluminum atomic fluorescence in laser-induced plasma was described and discussed. Selective enhancement of LIF and temporal synchronicity between radiation laser and fluorescence were studied. The influences of ablation laser energy, power density of the radiation laser, and interpulse delay were experimentally investigated. The results showed that 60 mJ in ablation laser energy and 4 μs in interpulse delay were the optimal choice for fluorescent intensity. The fluorescence was increased to the saturation level over 4 MW/cm2. Spectral stability improvement of LIBS-LIF was also discovered in this work. The results proved that LIBS-LIF is a feasible and effective modification of LIBS for ceramics analysis.

Abstract:Self-absorption, which is known to severely disturb identification of the emission peak intensity in emission-based spectroscopy, was first studied using ordinary single pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). It was found that severe self-absorption, with an evident self-reversal, occurs in the resonance emission lines of high concentration Na, K, and Al, and thus it is impossible to obtain the linear calibration curve required for quantitative analysis. To overcome this problem, we introduce a double pulse orthogonal technique in which the first laser is fired in a parallel orientation at a varied distance of 2-6 mm from the sample surface. It is well known that the strong shock wave generated by this laser irradiation temporarily creates a vacuum-like condition immediately in front of the sample surface. This action is followed by a second laser irradiation oriented perpendicular to the sample surface. The sample ablated by the second laser irradiation expands following the shockwave excitation process in the vacuum-like air atmosphere created by the first laser. The obtained spectra of the resonance emission lines of high concentration Na, K, and Al are free from the self-reversal and weakly affected by the self-absorption effect. A linear calibration curve that intercepts near zero point for K element over a wide concentration range is also demonstrated in this study. This simple modification is considered notably helpful in overcoming the self-absorption that occurs in ordinary single pulse atmospheric pressure LIBS.

Abstract:The existence of the self-absorption effect results in a nonlinear relationship between spectral intensity and elemental concentration, which dramatically affect the quantitative accuracy of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), especially calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS). In this work, the CF-LIBS with columnar density and standard reference line (CF-LIBS with CD-SRL) was proposed to improve the quantitative accuracy of CF-LIBS analysis by exploiting self-absorption. Our method allows using self-absorbed lines to perform the calibration-free approach directly and does not require self-absorption correction algorithms. To verify this method, the experiment was conducted both on aluminium-bronze and aluminium alloy samples. Compared with classical CF-LIBS, the average errors (AEs) of CF-LIBS with CD-SRL were decreased from 3.20%, 3.22%, 3.15% and 3.01%–0.95%, 1.00%, 1.16% and 1.78%, respectively for four aluminium-bronze alloy samples. The AEs were decreased from 0.66%, 0.70%, 0.89% and 1.30%–0.43%, 0.61%, 0.77% and 0.33%, respectively for four aluminium alloy samples. The experimental results demonstrated that CF-LIBS with CD-SRL provided higher quantitative accuracy and stronger adaptability than classical CF-LIBS, which is quite helpful for the practical application of CF-LIBS.

Abstract:The method of double-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is usually employed to enhance the spectral signal intensity. However, in this study, double-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is adopted to investigate the effect of the self-absorption reduction of the spectrum. This research explored that the influence of the change of the gas environment generated by the first laser beam on the self-absorption effect of the plasma spectrum by the second laser beam. Especially despite the different combinations of laser energy, for the three elements of Cu, Mn and Ni, the weakest spectral self-absorption effect can be obtained when the double-pulse delays are around 80 μs, 100 μs, and 110 μs, respectively. In addition, this paper also found that when the energy of the first laser beam is unchanged, the spectral self-absorption effect has a strong correlation with the double-pulse delay, and has a weak correlation with the change of the second laser energy.
