Abstract:The envelope components (e.g., roof sheathing panels, windows) of low-rise buildings often suffer from serious damage in strong winds. Efficient and accurate estimation of wind-induced damage to these components with various mean recurrence intervals (MRIs) is desired to facilitate damage mitigation strategies. This study develops novel database-assisted first- and multi-order Monte-Carlo simulation methods to evaluate the wind damage of low-rise building envelope with various MRIs considering both directionality and multiple openings on walls from a new perspective. In these methods, database-assisted estimation method is adopted to incorporate the non-Gaussianity and spatial correlation of wind loads across the building envelope. Numerical examples are utilized to compare the proposed two methods and investigate influences of correlations among directional annual extreme wind speeds and wind pressure coefficients on multiple envelope components on wind damages. It was found that, compared with the case where the multiple openings are not considered, the damage ratios of roof sheathing panels by two methods may have different values with relatively large MRIs. Moreover, correlations associated with pressure coefficients have a stronger influence on the wind damage of roof panels, while those associated with wind speed may reduce the wind damage of roof panels with relatively large MRIs.
