Abstract:The pilot-scale integrated constructed wetland (CW) facilities combined with a sedimentation cell (SC), a two-stage vertical flow CW cell (VF) and a horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) constructed wetland tank were established to investigate the performance of pollutant removal. In this study, two kinds of filter materials including lava and gravel which were planted with same vegetations including Myriophyllum verticillatum, Canna lily, and Cyperus alternifolius were used in the system. Municipal wastewater was introduced in the filter basin at four hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 1, 2, 3, 4 days during the study period. The best performance of treatment was found at 4 days HRT. The average removal efficiencies based on concentration of integrated CW systems were 93.6% for TSS, 90.5% for BOD5, 85.3% for COD, 81.9% for TN, 84.7% for NH4-N, and 94.7% for TP, respectively. The sedimentation cells effectively decreased TSS and BOD5 in raw wastewater so as to preserve infiltration capacity of porous media from clogging. Based on the statistical testing, it was found that the lava exhibited significantly difference in the capacity for the degradation of phosphorus.
