Abstract:Liquid-phase methane activation by ruthenium complexes has been studied using a combination of experiments and quantum-chemical calculation. Surprisingly, methane can be converted to methyl trifluoroacetate efficiently under mild conditions, and the bis(NHC) ligand outperforms the other two employed. The associated electronic origins of the excellent performance of the ruthenium complex - in particular the ligand effects - have been discussed, and the dative C & RARR; Ru interaction as well as the structural distortion of the bis(NHC) plane are found responsible. This work reveals the promising role ruthenium may play in the construction of organometallic catalysts for efficient methane conversion.

Abstract:The rate of catalytic methanol carbonylation to acetic acid is typically limited by either the oxidative addition of methyl iodide or the subsequent C–C bond-forming migratory insertion step. These elementary steps have been studied independently in acetonitrile solution for iridium aminophenylphosphinite (NCOP) complexes. The modular synthesis of NCOP ligands containing a macrocyclic aza-crown ether arm enables a direct comparison of two complementary catalyst optimization strategies: synthetic modification of the phenyl backbone and noncovalent modification through cation–crown interactions with Lewis acids in the surrounding environment. The oxidative addition of methyl iodide to iridium(I) carbonyl complexes proceeds readily at room temperature to form iridium(III) methylcarbonyliodide complexes. The methyl complexes undergo migratory insertion under 1 atm CO at 70 °C to produce iridium(III) acetyl species. Synthetic tuning, by incorporation of a methoxy group into the ligand backbone, had little influence on the rate. The addition of lithium and lanthanum salts, in contrast, enhanced the rate of C–C bond formation up to 25-fold. In the case of neutral iodide complexes, mechanistic studies suggest that Lewis acidic cations act as halide abstractors. In halide-free, cationic iridium complexes, the cations bind the macrocyclic ligand arm, further activating the iridium(III) center. The macrocyclic ligand is essential to the observed reactivity: complexes supported by acyclic diethylamine-containing ligands underwent migratory insertion slowly, Lewis acid effects were negligible, and the acetyl products decomposed over time.

Abstract:Oxidative methane (CH4) carbonylation promises a direct route to the synthesis of value-added oxygenates such as acetic acid (CH3COOH). Here, we report a strategy to realize oxidative CH4 carbonylation through immobilized Ir complexes on an oxide support. Our immobilization approach not only enables direct CH4 activation but also allows for easy separation and reutilization of the catalyst. Furthermore, we show that a key step, methyl migration, that forms a C-C bond, is sensitive to the electrophilicity of carbonyl, which can be tuned by a gentle reduction to the Ir centers. While the as-prepared catalyst that mainly featured Ir(IV) preferred CH3COOH production, a reduced catalyst featuring predominantly Ir(III) led to a significant increase of CH3OH production at the expense of the reduced yield of CH3COOH.

Abstract:The direct and selective conversion of syngas into C2+ oxygenates is challenging due to the complex reaction network. Here, we report a robust relay system for the direct synthesis of methyl acetate (MA) from syngas, which combines CuZnAlOx/H‐ZSM‐5 for syngas to dimethyl ether (DME) with modified H‐MOR for DME carbonylation. The dehydration of methanol to DME on H‐ZSM‐5 significantly enhanced the hydrogenation of CO on CuZnAlOx, because of high DME equilibrium yields. Blocking of Brönsted acid sites with basic molecules or selective dealumination of 12‐membered rings in H‐MOR suppressed the zeolite coking. Besides, reaction temperatures above 240°C avoided H2O poisoning of carbonylation sites inside 8‐MR side pockets of H‐MOR, further benefiting the catalytic stability. Eventually, this relay system provided a high MA selectivity of 75% and an acetic acid selectivity of 13% at a CO conversion of 65%, outperforming reported catalysts.

Abstract:Selective conversion of syngas (CO/H-2) into C2+ oxygenates is a highly attractive but challenging target. Herein, we report the direct conversion of syngas into methyl acetate (MA) by relay catalysis. MA can be formed at a lower temperature (ca. 473K) using Cu-Zn-Al oxide/H-ZSM-5 and zeolite mordenite (H-MOR) catalysts separated by quartz wool (denoted as Cu-Zn-Al/H-ZSM-5 vertical bar H-MOR) and also at higher temperatures (603-643K) without significant deactivation using spinel-structured ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR. The selectivity of MA and acetic acid (AA) reaches 87% at a CO conversion of 11% at 643K. Dimethyl ether (DME) is the key intermediate and the carbonylation of DME results in MA with high selectivity. We found that the relay catalysis using ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 gives ethanol as the major product, while ethylene is formed with a layer-by-layer ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR combination. Close proximity between ZnAl2O4 and H-MOR increases ethylene selectivity to 65%.

Abstract:AbstractEfficient and sustainable chemical fixation of CO2 into value-added chemicals is one of the most promising objectives in environmental chemistry. In this work, transition metal acetylacetonate immobilized onto triazolium ionic liquid-modified periodic mesoporous organosilica PMO-IL-M(x) was successfully prepared and investigated as an effective and heterogeneous catalyst in the direct carboxylation of terminal alkynes and CO2 to the desired alkynyl carboxylic acids. It was found that the catalyst PMO-IL-Sn(0.3) exhibited extraordinary catalytic performance in terms of excellent activity, stability, productivity, and excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalyst PMO-IL-Sn(0.3) could be easily recovered and reused at least six times without considerable loss in catalytic activity. This work provides a sustainable and efficient synergistic strategy for the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide into valuable alkynyl carboxylic acids.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Methanol carbonylation is the most important process for manufacturing C2 molecules from methanol. The present industrial carbonylation has been proven to be the most successful process on economical grounds. However, there is a request to develop more sustainable and ‘green’ processes to overcome the inherent drawbacks. Well-designed cross-linked copolymers were prepared and used as support for the simultaneous immobilization of rhodium and iodide species. The resulting catalyst was proven to be highly active in CH3I-free methanol carbonylation and methyl acetate was the main product. Approximately 90% of methanol was converted after a two-hour reaction time at 120 °C under a CO pressure of 3.0 MPa. The immobilization strategy of the active species works efficiently and the present methanol carbonylation catalyst shows good recyclability. After regenerating the catalyst twice over a fifteen-batches test, the catalyst keeps an acceptable activity. The process based on the present catalyst is evidently a promising sustainable methanol carbonylation.

Abstract:The precise C-C coupling is a challenging goal in C1 chemistry. The conversion of methanol, a cheap and easily available C1 feedstock, into value-added and largely demanded olefins has been playing a game-changing role in the production of olefins. The current methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process, however, suffers from limited selectivity to a specific olefin. Here, we present a relay-catalysis route for the high-selective conversion of methanol to ethylene in syngas (H2/CO) typically used for methanol synthesis. A bifunctional catalyst composed of selectively dealuminated H-MOR zeolite and ZnO-TiO2, which implemented methanol carbonylation with CO to acetic acid and selective acetic acid hydrogenation to ethylene in tandem, offered ethylene selectivity of 85% at complete methanol conversion at 583 K. The selective removal of Brønsted acid sites in the 12-membered ring channel of H-MOR favors the selectivity of acetic acid in CH3OH carbonylation. The high capabilities of ZnO-TiO2 in the adsorption of acetic acid and the activation of H2 play key roles in selective hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethylene. Our work provides a promising relay-catalysis strategy for precise C-C coupling of C1 to C2 molecules.

Abstract:The methylation of alcohols is of great importance since a broad number of bioactive and pharmaceutical alcohols contain methyl groups. Here, a highly efficient β-methylation of primary and secondary alcohols with methanol has been achieved by using bis-N-heterocyclic carbene iridium (bis-NHC-Ir) complexes. Broad substrate scope and up to quantitative yields were achieved at low catalyst loadings with only hydrogen and water as by-products. The protocol was readily extended to the β-alkylation of alcohols with several primary alcohols. Control experiments, along with DFT calculations and crystallographic studies, revealed that the ligand effect is critical to their excellent catalytic performance, shedding light on more challenging Guerbet reactions with simple alcohols.

Abstract:A cyclometalated iridium(III) complex containing a N boolean AND C boolean AND N-coordinating terdentate ligand [Ir(dpyx-N,C,N)-Cl(mu-Cl)](2) was found to be a general and highly effective catalyst for the a-alkylation of ketones and N-alkylation of amines with alcohols. In the presence of catalyst (1 mol % Ir) and base (0.2-0.5 equiv), a variety of desirable products were obtained in good yields under an air atmosphere. Notably, this research exhibited the new potential of Ir(III) complexes bearing non-Cp* ligand and will facilitate the progress of the hydrogen autotransfer process.

Abstract:The review analyzes the specific features of methyl acetate synthesis by dimethyl ether carbonylation in the presence of zeolite catalysts. The structural characteristics of zeolites, in particular, mordenite and ferrierite, that affect carbonylation are discussed. The bridging hydroxyl groups (Al–OH–Si) of zeolites function as Brønsted acid sites and interact with dimethyl ether. The carbonylation reaction is characterized by an induction period, during which dimethyl ether molecules interact with Brønsted acid sites to form methoxy groups. The incorporation of CO into the methoxy group leads to the formation of an acetyl intermediate. Methyl acetate is formed due to the interaction between a dimethyl ether molecule and an acetyl intermediate. The reaction is facilitated by the confinement effect characteristic of small zeolite pores, in particular, eight-membered pockets of mordenite. Methyl acetate is synthesized at moderate temperatures (about 200°C) in a CO–dimethyl ether mixture at a high selectivity and a significant dimethyl ether conversion. The occurrence of hydrocarbon formation side reactions, along with the methyl acetate synthesis target reaction, is observed; the side reactions decrease the on-stream stability of the catalyst. In the case of mordenite, these reactions are attributed to the sites present in the twelve-membered channels. The on-stream stability of the catalysts can be increased by using special techniques for neutralizing the deactivating sites of the zeolite. The effect can be achieved by pyridine adsorption or ion exchange of the respective protons of the mordenite structure for organic or metal cations. The introduction of zinc ions and, additionally, copper ions significantly inhibits the activity of the mordenite sites on which the side reactions occur. A new area of research is the use of multifunctional catalysts that mediate methyl acetate synthesis directly from synthesis gas.

Abstract:The small-pore zeolite with the chabazite framework topology, SSZ-13, is found to be an active catalyst in the carbonylation of dimethyl ether to methyl acetate (MA). The production of MA over SSZ-13 after 24 h on stream at 165 °C and 1 bar approaches that obtained from mordenite and is significantly higher than from ferrierite at comparable Si/Al of ca. 10. To understand the origin of the activity, SSZ-13 materials are synthesized with variable Si/Al, characterized via several techniques including multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy, and evaluated for their carbonylation activity. While MA production rates increase with decreasing Si/Al, the correlation is nonlinear due to the effect of Si/Al on the acid site distribution within different confining environments, and the associated impact of the latter on the rate-determining transition state barrier. Enhanced MA production rates trend with acid sites located at the eight-membered ring (8MR) that are increasingly populated as framework Al content increases. Density functional theory analyses of transition state energies as a function of active site location support the experimental findings, where the lowest apparent barriers are associated with the methoxy groups that orient within the plane of the 8MR window. This is due to an optimal charge stabilization of the cationic transition states with the negatively charged oxygens within the 8MR window. The effects of catalyst chemical composition, separate from framework topology, are also investigated using SAPO-34 (the silicoaluminophosphate analog of SSZ-13). Analyses of the 1H MAS NMR signals and carbonylation activity suggest that the higher acid site strength of SSZ-13 compared to that of the SAPO material is required for effective Brønsted acid catalysis of Koch-type carbonylation pathways.

Abstract:Dehydration of methyl lactate (ML) obtained from biomass is a sustainable route for the production of methyl acrylate (MA). Herein, we demonstrate that cesium-exchanged Al-rich Beta zeolite (Cs-Beta) is highly efficient for the dehydration of ML to MA, exhibiting full ML conversion with 87.4% MA yield at 340 °C. In situ FT-IR spectra and kinetic studies provide evidence that the ML dehydration on the Cs-Beta zeolite follows a forward ion-exchange/dehydration/reverse ion-exchange reaction pathway. Model experiments, DFT calculations, TG-DSC analysis, and FT-IR spectra showed that coke formation competes with the dehydration of ML to MA. Kinetic studies and theoretical simulations demonstrate that cesium cations in the micropores of Beta zeolite have a strong steric hindrance, suppressing the formation of oligomers and coke. These results offer new insights for developing highly selective and stable catalysts for the dehydration of ML to MA in the future.

Abstract:By employing ab initio molecular dynamic simulations, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and two-dimensional correlation analysis of rapid scan Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data, a new pathway is proposed for the formation of methyl acetate (MA) via the acylium ion (i.e.,CH 3 − C ≡ O + ) in 12-membered ring (MR) channel of mordenite by an integrated reaction/diffusion kinetics model, and this route is kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable than the traditional viewpoint in 8MR channel. From perspective of the complete catalytic cycle, the separation of these two reaction zones, i.e., the C-C bond coupling in 8MR channel and MA formation in 12MR channel, effectively avoids aggregation of highly active acetyl species or ketene, thereby reducing undesired carbon deposit production. The synergistic effect of different channels appears to account for the high carbonylation activity in mordenite that has thus far not been fully explained, and this paradigm may rationalize the observed catalytic activity of other reactions.
Selective Methanol Carbonylation to Acetic Acid on Heterogeneous Atomically Dispersed ReO 4 /SiO 2 Catalysts

Abstract:Methanol carbonylation to acetic acid (AA) is a large-scale commodity chemical production process that requires homogeneous liquid-phase organometallic catalysts with corrosive halide-based cocatalysts to achieve high selectivity and activity. Here, we demonstrate a heterogeneous catalyst based on atomically dispersed rhenium (ReO4) active sites on an inert support (SiO2) for the halide-free, gas phase carbonylation of methanol to AA. Atomically dispersed ReO4 species and nanometer sized ReOx clusters were deposited on a high surface area (700 m2/g) inert SiO2 using triethanolamine as a dispersion promoter and characterized using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM), UV–vis spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Reactivity measurements at atmospheric pressure with 30 mbar of methanol and CO (1:1 molar ratio) showed that bulk Re2O7 and ReOx clusters on SiO2 (formed at >10 wt %) were selective for dimethyl ether formation, while atomically dispersed ReO4 on SiO2 (formed at <10 wt %) exhibited stable (for 60 h) > 93% selectivity to AA with single pass conversion >60%. Kinetic analysis, in situ FTIR, and in situ XAS measurements suggest that the AA formation mechanism involves methanol activation on ReO4, followed by CO insertion into the terminal methyl species. Further, the introduction of ∼0.2 wt % of atomically dispersed Rh to 10 wt % atomically dispersed ReO4 on SiO2 resulted in >96% selectivity toward AA production at volumetric reaction rates comparable to homogeneous processes. Abstract:Photoinduced acylmethyl radical procedures for the efficent and simple preparation of highly functionalized 1,5-dicarbonyl compounds from Morita-Baylis-Hillman acetates with a-bromo ketones are developed. The acylmethylation is carried out with rose bengal as an organophotocatalyst at room temperature under metal- and oxidant-free conditions. Particularly, the simple photoinduced bromoacylmethylation was exploited via a fac-Ir(ppy)3-catalyzed atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) strategy under visible light irradiation. This method are attractive and valuable due to its mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A kind of highly dispersed ZrO2 modified Cs/SiO2-based catalyst was prepared via ligand–assisted impregnation strategy. The catalyst was then used to the aldol condensation reaction of methyl acetate (MAc) with formaldehyde (FA) to produce methyl acrylate (MA). The effect of highly dispersed ZrO2 promotion on Cs/SiO2 catalyst selectivity and activity was studied as well. Various techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, TEM, XPS, NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD, N2 physical adsorption, and solid-state MAS NMR were used to characterize the structural features, Cs species states, and acid–base properties of these catalysts. The use of Zr(acac)4 as a zirconium source for modifying Cs/SiO2 could be considered optimal for ligand-assisted impregnation. By modifying the highly dispersed ZrO2, more Cs–O–Si species and a suitable balance of acid–base sites were formed in the Zr–Cs/SiO2 catalyst. As a result, the catalyst showed significant improvements in selectivity and yield of MA under optimized reaction conditions. This study is beneficial for the development and optimization of catalysts for aldol condensation and provides a reference for future industrial applications.
