Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) Cs0.3WO3 nanofibers were controllably synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method employing different reducing agents such as ethanol, isopropanol, terpineol and 1-octadecene. The effects on the crystalline structure, size and morphology of the nanoparticles were thoroughly investigated by XRD and SEM analyses. XRD analysis shows that the different reducing agents have no significant effect on the crystal phase of the products. SEM results indicate that the 1D Cs0.3WO3 nanofibers synthesized by using 1-octadecene as a reducing agent possess uniform fiber-like morphology with smooth surface and the largest aspect ratio up to 132.3, average diameter and length of 65 nm and 8.6 mu m, respectively. Moreover, all the samples exhibit a broad absorption spectrum from 780 nm to 20000 nm, and their optical properties are closely related to the aspect ratio of the samples. And the sample-1-OA with the largest aspect ratio shows excellent instantaneous photo-thermal conversion property resulting in an obvious temperature increases from 20 degrees C to 72.3 degrees C when it was irradiated by 50 W halogen lamp for 10 s.

Abstract:WO(x) (2 < x < 3) and WS(2) nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WO(x) nanoparticles or nanorods to WS(2) nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS(2) nanoparticles to one-dimensional W(18)O(49) nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W(18)O(49) nanorods into WS(2) nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS(2) nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W(18)O(49) nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Abstract:Recently, nano-cesium tungsten bronze (CsxWO3) is found to be a new candidate for the application in solar filter due to its high visible transmittance and excellent near-infrared shielding ability. However, a typical two-dimensional (2D) CsxWO3 has not been reported since 2D nanomaterials have attracted great attention due to their fascinating properties, e.g., graphene. Herein, a novel synthesis system and related mechanisms are tried to develop for synthesizing 2D CsxWO3 via hydrothermal method, which an original inspiration derived from the morphology control of sulfides. The results indicate that morphology modifier represents a new strategy in which thiourea and oleylamine interact synergistically rather than independently to synthesize 2D Cs0.3WO3. The more regular and larger the rectangular nanosheet, the broader and stronger the light absorption, the rectangular Cs0.3WO3 nanosheets with the maximum size are synthesized from thiourea, oleylamine and HCl concentrations of 4, 0.061 and 320 mmol/L, respectively, and exhibit a broad and strong absorption spectrum. The above nanosheet shows excellent instantaneous photo-thermal conversion property resulting in an obvious temperature increases from 20 °C to 88.5 °C when it was irradiated by 50 W halogen lamp for 10 s. Finally, both chemical reaction and morphological evolution in the synthesis processes are revealed.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) nanostructures such as nanowires, nanorod bundles and nanotube bundles are synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The ultraviolet (UV) photoresponse characteristics of devices containing these WO3 nanostructures are investigated for the first time and new photosensitive mechanisms involving both photo-generated electron-hole pairs and reversible electrochemical reactions are proposed. We find that h-WO3 nanowires with large specific surface areas and fewer defects exhibit excellent UV photoresponse properties with switch ratios (defined as I-photo/I-dark) as high as 60, which is due to the existing large tunnels serving as channels and intercalation sites for mobile ions and active electrochemical reactions, and our findings provide a new family and more selectivity for UV photosensitive nanomaterials in the future.

Abstract:CsxWO3 nanoparticles with tuneable size in the range from 20 nm to about 1 mu m have been successfully synthesised by a microwave-assisted solvothermal approach. The products were characterised by X-ray diffraction, TEM and EDS measurements. It has been found that the particle size was greatly changed depending on the reaction time. CsxWO3 nanoparticles with a particle size of 20-50 nm showed the high transparency in the visible region, excellent shielding performance of the near-infrared light and limited reflectance of light.

Abstract:CsxWO3 nanoparticles in the range of 20-50 nm have been successfully synthesized by the supercritical solvothermal approach, where after dissolving WCl6 and CsOH in a mixed solution of water, ethanol and oleic acid, the solution was heated at 300 degrees C. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, TEM, HR-TEM, EDS, laser particle size analysis and thermographic measurements. CsxWO3 nanoparticles showed the high transparency in the visible region, excellent shielding performance of the near-infrared light and limited reflectance of light in the range of 200-2700 nm, indicating the strong absorption of NIR light on the nanosized CsxWO3. CsxWO3 nanoparticles also exhibited quick conversion of photo-energy to local heat.

Abstract:The WO3/WS2 nanostructures were successfully prepared using a two-step hydrothermal/gas phase method. The physical properties of the nanostructures were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy. The WO3/WS2 nanostructures obtained were coexistence of WO3 and WS2 in the same particle. The WO3/WS2 nanostructures contained a wide and intensive absorption in the UV–visible light region of 245–750nm, which showed that the WO3/WS2 nanostructures may have a potential application as an UV–visible photocatalyst.

Abstract:Hexagonal WO3 (h-WO3) nanorod-cluster films were controllably synthesized by a facile template-free hydrothermal technique. The pH value and the amount of urea in the precursor have critical influences on the crystal form and morphology of the WO3 film. The obtained uniform WO3 films feature a porous structure of clusters composed of h-WO3 nanorods with diameter of 6-10 nm and length of up to several hundred nanometers. Due to the novel microstructure and crystalline phase, the high electrochromic performance in NIR range with a high optical modulation of 46% in 1600 nm, fast switching speed (2.4 s for coloration and 3.6 s for bleaching), high coloration efficiency (106.1 cm(2) C-1 in 1600 nm), and an excellent cycling stability (more than 96% charge capacity retained after 1000 cycles) was achieved. Abstract:High-quality nanostructured ZnxCd1-xS has been synthesized through a method of two-step thermal evaporation. The typical morphologies of the nanomaterials were investigated by SEM and TEM. The first step of synthesis is the preparation of ZnS nanoribbons. With ZnS nanoribbons being used as templates, a series of wurtzite ZnxCd1-xS (x = 0.47, 0.70, 0.77, 0.85, and 0.94) nanobelts can be produced. Furthermore, by adopting ZnS nanoribbons of a particular width, ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts of a desired width can be fabricated. In XRD analysis, we find that with an increase in Zn content (x), the peaks corresponding to the wurtzite structures shift to larger 2 theta. As a deduction based on Vegard's law, the ZnxCd1-xS are solid solutions of similar crystal structure. The results of H RTEM and SAED investigations reveal that the ZnS nanoribbons and ZnxCd1-xS nanobelts grow along the (10 (1) over bar0) direction. With an increase in Zn content, we observe a gradual blue shift of photoluminescence emission (from 443 to 352 nm), further indicating the homogeneity of the ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. After proper thermal annealing, there is better crystallinity of ZnxCd1-xS and higher specificity of near-band emission.
A Study of Intermediate for Synthesis of Cs0.3WO3 with Near-Infrared Photothermal Response

Abstract:Nanoscale tungsten bronze can convert near-infrared light into thermal energy. For a chemical synthesis, intermediate products and processes are potentially positive or negative to an end product. In this study, (NH4)2SO4 was added into the hydrothermal system of WO3, CsCl, CH3CH2CHO, and NH3·H2O to increase the Cs/W ratio in solution. An intermediate, Cs1.1W1.65O5.5, was isolated. Subsequently, it was confirmed via a kinetics experiment conducted for different times. The results of the NH3·H2O and NH4COOCH3 system indicate there are two influence factors that influence the formation of Cs1.1W1.65O5.5: the leaching out of W and imine reactions. A low leaching out rate induces a high Cs/W ratio and low-concentration W in solution, leading to the formation of Cs1.1W1.65O5.5. The imine reaction decreasing CH3CH2CHO restrains the reduction in Cs1.1W1.65O5.5. The increase in CH3CH2COO− with the reduction reaction results in both the micron-size sticks and nano-size equiaxial particles in powder.

Abstract:In recent years, hexagonal cesium tungsten bronze, MxWO3 (M = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+, NH4+; 0 < x < 1), nanoparticles have attracted much attention for its specific visible transparency and infrared absorption property. It is usually synthesized by wet-chemistry methods, most of which use homogeneous solution systems, also use WO3 colloid systems. The difference between the two routes is the increase in the size of the solute particles in the wet reaction systems. If the size of the solute continues to increase, e.g., using a larger size of commercial WO3 as a raw material. Could tungsten bronze still be synthesized even under this heterogeneous condition? In this study, a series of reaction systems were conducted, and a single-phase Cs0.3WO3 powder with hexagonal structure and without NH4+ doping was hydrothermally synthesized using CsCl, N2H4 center dot H2O and commercial WO3 at 200 degrees C. Then again, Cs0.3WO3 was also synthesized by using CsCl, NH4OH, C3H6O and commercial WO3 to study the mechanism. These suggest that Cs0.3WO3 is not formed in-situ on WO3 solid, but a dissolution-recombination route related with the nucleation, growth, and agglomeration. UV-Vis-NIR and FT-IR measurements show that Cs0.3WO3 is transparent in visible region of 380 - 780 nm and absorptive in infrared region of 780 - 10000 nm.

Abstract:Semiconductor ZnS with novel and complex 3D architectures such as nanorods (or nanowires) networks, urchinlike nanosturctures, nearly monodisperse nanospheres self-assembled from nanorods and 1D nanostructures (rods and wires) had been synthesized in a binary solution by controlling the reaction conditions, such as the volume ratio of the mixed solvents and the reaction temperature. The morphology of ZnS changed from 3D architectural structures to ID rodlike (or wirelike) shape when the temperature was increased from 160 to 200-240 degrees C. The possible growth mechanisms for the formation of nanospheres self-assembled from nanorods are tentatively discussed according to the experimental results. The photocatalytic activity of carious ZnS nanostructures has been tested by degradation of acid fuchsine under infrared light compared to that of commercial ZnS powders under infrared-light irradiation and commercial TiO2 powders under UV-light irradiation, indicating that the as-obtained ZnS nanostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for degradation of acid fuchsine.

Abstract:CaWO4 and SrWO4 nanostructures have been synthesized via a simple microemulsion-mediated route. With careful control of the fundamental experimental parameters including the concentration of reactants, the reaction time and the temperature, the products with different morphologies of dumbbell, coral, rod and dendrite have been obtained, respectively. The possible formation mechanism of these unique morphologies has been proposed based on surfactant self-assembly under different experimental conditions. The as-synthesized CaWO4 samples with various morphologies exhibit different photoluminescence properties. X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy were used to characterize these products.

Abstract:Cube-shaped Co3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized through the combination of solution-phase route and hydrothermal route, whose sizes could be effectively controlled. composition, geometrical and crystalline structures and surface plasmon resonance property of the Co3O4 nanoparticles were investigated. Results show that the as-prepared Co3O4 nanoparticles possessed a cube shape and a pure spinel cubic crystal phase and their sizes gradually increased from ca. 10 nm to ca. 36 nm with increasing the concentrations of Co(NO3)(2). Moreover, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements indicated that the differently shaped Co3O4 nanoparticles had different SPR properties. Compared with hollow Co3O4 nanospheres, the prepared Co3O4 nanocubes displayed better SPR property.

Abstract:CdS nanowires with controllable size, orientation, and morphology were synthesized on a large scale by a solvothermal method. The mechanism for the formation of CdS nanowires evolved from CdS spherical particles can be divided into a short-period solid-solid transformation process and a long-period ripening process. Near-band-emission without distinct split phenomenon was observed in the PL spectrum of CdS nanowires at 10 K. The best fit results based on Varshni empirical equation support our assignment of FX. Temperature dependent integrated peak intensity and linewidth of FX were analyzed by means of a two-step quenching process model and well fitted by Toyozawa's theory. All fitted results including thermal activation energy, LO-phonon energy were close to that observed in bulk CdS, indicating high quality of nanomaterial but also revealing its promising applications in photonics. Abstract:Monodisperse nanocrystals of a new wurtzite phase of Cu(2)CoSnS(4) (CCTS) have been synthesized using a simple solution-based method. The wurtzite CCTS nanocrystals grow in the shape of nanorods with an average length of 32 ± 2.0 and width of 16 ± 1.5 nm. The more stable stannite phase of CCTS has also been synthesized by increasing the reaction temperature or by a post-high-temperature annealing process. The band gap of wurtzite CCTS nanocrystals is determined to be 1.58 eV. Thin films prepared from the nanocrystal suspension display photoresponse behaviour with white light from a solar simulator, suggesting the potential use of CCTS as an active layer in low-cost thin-film solar cells.

Abstract:A facile composite-salt-mediated strategy is employed for the first time to synthesize CdWO4 nanowire and nanoflower arrays on cadmium foil substrates. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties are measured on the electrodes made of the CdWO4 nanowire and nanoflower arrays under the simulated sunlight illumination. Both electrodes display high sensitive response and photocurrent stability. The photocurrent density of the nanowire arrays electrode reach 0.35 mA/cm(2), which is about 3 times as much as that of the nanoflower array electrode. To improve the visible light photocurrent response, CdS nanopartides are deposited on the CdWO4 nanowire arrays to form a CdS/CdWO4 heterojunction. Remarkably enhanced photoresponse is observed on the CdS/CdWO4 heterostructure and the photocurrent intensity is about twice as much as that of the electrode made of the pure CdWO4 nanowire arrays. The photoelectric mechanism is also discussed by the crystal structure and morphology characterization, optical band gap and carrier mobility analysis. This work presents a new design of a photoelectrochemical device for possible applications in photoelectrolysis of water and solar cells or highly sensitive light detection. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A novel and simple chemical approach involved in precipitate-hydrothermal processes is described to synthesize nanocrystalline CdS, ZnS and CdxZn1-xS. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, PL and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The lattice structure gradually changes from hexagonal to cubic with increasing percentage of Zn in the ternary compound CdxZn1-xS. The UV-vis and PL spectra indicate that the optical properties of the obtained nanocrystals can be continuously modulated by tuning their compositions. CdxZn1-xS also showed the high photocatalytic activity in degradation of methyl orange under visible light, and the remnant ratio is 3-13% for 1 h. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:CdWO4 nanocrystals with controlled particle size and crystallinity were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method using citric acid as the capping agent. By systematic sample characterization using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, selected area electron diffraction, Barret−Emmett−Teller technique, Fourier transformed infrared spectra, UV−visible diffuse reflectance spectra, and photoluminescence spectra, all as-prepared CdWO4 samples were demonstrated to crystallize in a pure-phase of monoclinic wolframite structure.
