Abstract:Successful management of information technology (IT) projects is a primary concern of project managers (PMs) and user liaisons (ULs). Prior studies have indicated that high risks result in low performance in IT projects, whereas effective enforcement of formal and informal controls enhances performance. These two streams have been integrated by examining the interactions between environment risks and control. However, contradictory findings have been presented given that environment risks can positively or negatively moderate the effect of control on performance. Furthermore, the collective effects of environment risks and controls across different stakeholders remain unknown. Quantitative analysis of data from 128 completed IT projects in China indicates that internal environment risk negatively moderates the effect of formal and informal controls on the product performance of IT projects from the perspectives of PMs and ULs. By contrast, external environment risk positively moderates the effectiveness of controls, thereby indicating the significant and diverse moderating roles of various environment risks in the relationship of control and performance. Environment risks can be threats to or facilitators of the success of IT projects. In addition, external environment risk moderates the effect of formal control on product performance for ULs more than internal environment risk, whereas the moderating effect of internal environment risk for PMs is stronger than that of external environment risk. This finding provides additional evidence that the moderating effects of internal and external environment risks differ among various stakeholders. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper develops a risk-based integrated model of information systems development(ISD) project performance to explain the effect of project inherent uncertainty and management practices on project performance. Based on the dataset collected from customized information systems development projects of software houses in Hangzhou City of China,this paper carries out an empirical analysis on the research model. The results reveal that performance risk in development stage and performance risk in implementation stage are two intervening variables, which mediated the effects of project inherent uncertainty and management practices on both process and product performance. The findings suggest that management factors such as project planning and control,internal integration,user participation and top management support can improve project performance in the presence of project inherent uncertainty. In addition, the key influencing factors are found to be different in different project stages.Key influencing factors are project planning and control, internal integration and user participation in development stage. Key influencing factors are user participation and top management support in implementation stage.However,we have not found evidence for significant positive influence of process performance on product performance,which means that projects which come in within time and cost budgets may deliver poor systems.

Abstract:The relationship between managerial control and performance has been extensively investigated in literature. However, in the context of medical information systems (IS) projects, this topic has received little attention. Furthermore, the integrated effects of organizational environment and team risks, as well as managerial controls on the performance of medical IS projects have never been examined. The present study attempts to bridge these gaps using data on 195 medical IS projects from 160 hospitals. Our empirical results demonstrate that behavior, outcome, and clan controls positively affect the performance of medical IS projects. By contrast, self-control is insignificantly related to performance. This finding reveals that in medical IS projects, the effectiveness of managerial controls varies. Not all control modes significantly influence the performance of medical IS projects. Effective control modes should therefore be prioritized over ineffective control modes for such complex projects. Moreover, organizational environment and team risks diminish the effects of behavior, outcome and clan controls on performance in medical IS projects, which implies that project performance relies on the integrative influence of controls and risks, and the exercise of control should consider the mitigation of risks from both client and development team sides in medical IS projects.

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the role played by internal control and its five components (i.e. control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, and monitoring) in alleviating future stock price crash risk. Using a unique dataset from China, we find evidence that internal control is negatively associated with future stock price crash risk. Specifically, control environment, information and communication, and monitoring are significantly and negatively associated with future stock price crash risk. Moreover, the negative association between internal control and crash risk is significantly more pronounced in firms with weak internal and external governance (i.e. audited by non-Big 4 auditors, located in provinces with low market development, and less conservative in accounting) and with poor ability to mitigate impacts of extreme negative events (i.e. non-state-owned enterprises). Our study highlights the delicate role of internal control as a mechanism in preventing crash of stock price.

Abstract:The successful control of information technology (IT) projects has received significant attention in academe and in practice. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of formal control modes in the performance of IT projects for project managers. However, little is known about the joint effects of risks and the two informal control modes, clan and self control, on the process performance of IT projects from the perspective of user liaisons. Based on data collected from 63 completed IT projects in China, we have found that both clan and self control are important from the perspective of user liaisons and that informal control is effective for the performance of different stakeholders. However, both team and planning and control risks suppress the effectiveness of clan and self control in process performance, indicating that IT project performance is not purely dependent on a single risk or control factor but on the balance between these two streams.

Abstract:Improving the management of information technology (IT) projects is of prime concern to both IS researchers and practitioners, as IT projects are notorious for poor process performance, frequently running over budget and behind schedule. Over the years, at least two separate streams of research have emerged with the aim of contributing to our understanding of IT project management. One of these focuses on the exercise of formal and informal controls, while another focuses on identifying and managing key risks such as those associated with requirements and users. Proponents of the control stream would argue that the exercise of formal and informal controls can improve process performance and there is some evidence that this is so. An obvious question that emerges, however, is how effective these controls are in the presence of particular risks. In this study, we seek to answer this question by developing and testing a research model that integrates these two streams of research. On the basis of data collected from 63 completed IT projects in China, we examine the moderating effects of requirements risk and user risk on the relationship between control (both formal and informal) and the process performance of IT projects. We contribute to the current state of knowledge by clearly demonstrating that both types of risk moderate the effects of formal and informal controls on performance. Specifically, both requirements risk and user risk were found to reduce the positive influence of controls on process performance, implying that implementing solid controls is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition to ensure good process performance.

Abstract:Controlling information technology (IT) projects is a prime concern for both project managers (PMs) and users, yet little is known about how key risks affect the relationship between controls and performance. Based on data collected on 128 completed IT projects, we examine the moderating effects of requirement and user risk on the relationship between controls and process performance from the perspectives of both the project manager and the user liaison. Both risks were found to suppress the relationship between controls and process performance for each group. While both formal and informal control explain a significant amount of variance in process performance, formal control had a more significant role than informal control from the PM perspective, whereas informal controls play a more significant role than formal controls from the user perspective. The relationship between formal control and process performance was found to be stronger for PMs than for users.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between environmental performance and corporate risk-taking in China. Using the sample from China between 2010 and 2016, we find that corporate risk-taking is negatively associated with their environmental performance. Compared to non-state-owned firms, this association is more pronounced in state-owned firms. More equity incentives, higher independent director proportion, and higher institutional ownership are found to weaken this relationship. We further document that active environmental behavior (e.g. mature environmental management and more green innovation) alleviate this negative relationship. These conclusions remain valid after a series of robustness tests and endogeneity tests.

Abstract:Successfully managing the risks of information technology projects continues to be a central problem for organizations regardless of whether the project is outsourced or not. While a plethora of studies has examined the effects of risks on performance, majority fail to distinguish the sourcing characteristics of the projects investigated. Furthermore, little is known about the joint effects of strategic importance and the risk on system performance across internal and outsourced projects. Based on data collected from 77 internal projects and 51 outsourced projects, we find that social subsystem and project management risks are negatively associated with system performance in both internal and outsourced projects. However, technical subsystem risk negatively affects performance only in internal projects. While social subsystem risk exerts greater influence on system performance in outsourced projects than in internal projects, the technical subsystem risk has greater effect on performance in internal than that in outsourced projects. Moreover, the effect of project management risk is not different in both types of projects. In addition, strategic importance moderates the relationship between risks and performance. The negative impact of risks on performance is greater in projects that are more strategic. Strategies are proposed to reduce the complexity and potential conflicts inherent to strategic projects because these characteristics may amplify a risk's impact.

Abstract:Successfully controlling strategic information systems (IS) projects in realizing strategic goals is a primary concern for managers. However, the effectiveness of control may vary with the organizational resources, such as senior management commitment. Using a theoretical lens of resource dependence, this article investigates the mechanism of how senior management commitment, a critical organizational resource, changes the influences of four types of control on the performance of strategic IS projects. Based on a pairwise survey on user liaisons and project managers from 155 strategic IS projects, we discover that behavior control and self-control are effective in improving strategic performance contrary to outcome and clan control. However, such effects are differentially changed by senior management commitment, which increases the effectiveness of outcome and clan control but weakens that of self-control. Thus, senior management commitment has dual roles toward strategic performance in either facilitating or deteriorating control effectiveness. Our findings contribute to control-based theory, resource dependence theory, strategic IS project, and management commitment literature by identifying the interactive effect of senior management commitment and control. Our findings also provide practical insights into how managers substantially control and support strategic IS projects.

Abstract:Managing risks in information technology projects is a prime concern for both researchers and practitioners. However, little is known on how key project-based knowledge, such as the user liaison's understanding of development processes (ULUDP), affects the relationship between risk and performance. Using quantitative data collected from 63 completed projects, ULUDP has been empirically proven to weaken the negative effects of user-related and project management risks on product performance. Although the effect of the project management risk on performance remains negative, this effect decreases significantly with high levels of ULUDP, whereas user-related risk affects performance insignificantly in such situations.

Abstract:Mixed findings of the impact of electronic integration (EI) innovation on firm performance have been found in the literature. This study makes a conceptual argument that EI innovation is related with greater performance in logistics enterprises, but conditioned on environmental uncertainty (dimensioned as environmental dynamism, heterogeneity, and hostility). Environmental heterogeneity and hostility are suggested to positively moderate the business value of EI innovation in logistics enterprises; while environmental dynamism has multiple impacts.

Abstract:Successfully controlling IT projects continues to be a primary concern by project managers and users.Based on the survey of IT projects from 128 Chinese enterprises,a model for examining the effect of four control modes(behavior,outcome,value,and self control) on IT project performance is created,and their relative importance are compared with each other.The results show that there are concordance and discordance on the effectiveness of control modes for project managers and users.From the perspective of both stakeholders,outcome control and value control have a positive effect on process performance,which is also positively related to product performance.However,self control does not have a significant effect on the performance.In addition,outcome control is relatively more important than behavior control on the process performance for the project managers,whereas the effect of these two control modes on performance has no significant different for the users.

Abstract:How does IT bring competitive advantage to the firm and promote firm performance is concerned by multitudinous scholars.The relation among IT competency,knowledge management strategy,and organization performance under environment pressure was discussed.By taking 397 firms as the samples,the model was tested.And the results showed that the IT competency has a positive impact on organization performance through knowledge management strategy.Firms which implement knowledge management strategy can achieve higher performance level.Although environment pressure has a direct negative impact on the organization performance,it can also affect organization performance indirectly and positively thought IT competency and knowledge management strategy.

Abstract:This paper investigates the interaction between corporate environmental responsibility (CER) and corporate financial performance (CFP). Moreover, the moderating effect of environmental regulation and internal control on this relationship is also examined. Based on the panel data of 790 China's A-shares listed companies of heavily polluting industries from 2006 to 2019, the results show that while CFP has a significant positive impact on CER, the positive impact of CER on CFP is not significant. Further analysis reveals that environmental regulation plays a positive moderating role in the impact of CFP on CER, and the positive impact of CER on CFP become significant in higher internal control quality firms. The results indicate that good environmental performance is a consequence of earlier good financial performance, and the costs of implementing sustainable and responsible projects are not always offset by revenues sufficient to generate increases in profit. Our findings suggest that firms should improve the quality of internal control and government should increase environmental supervision to achieve a virtuous circle connecting CER and CFP.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between internal control, economic policy uncertainty, and performance of cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) based on the panel data of Chinese listed firms. The authors expected that internal control has a positive moderating effect on the performance of cross-border M&A and that it mainly occurs during periods when economic policies are relatively stable. In addition, the authors tried to find out the mechanism of internal control affecting cross-border M&A and the corporate performance. Design/methodology - The authors tested the hypotheses by a multivariate regression model based on the panel data of Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2017. The dependent variable is the change value of business performance (DROA_1,2,3) and the explanatory variables are cross-border M&A (MA), China's uncertainty of economic policy (EPU), and internal control level (IC) respectively. Findings - The authors find that internal control has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between cross-border M&A and corporate performance. Further, the authors find that the moderating effect is more significant in state-owned enterprises and that it mainly occurs during periods when economic policies are relatively stable. Originality/value - This paper is the leading study that tries to analyze empirically the relationship between internal control, economic policy uncertainty, and performance of cross-border M&A. It provides a new avenue through which internal control might reasonably mitigate the risks of cross-border M&A and correspondingly improve the performance of cross-border M&A. It also confirms the moderating effect of internal control on the performance of cross-border M&A under the uncertainty of economic policy.

Abstract:In this paper, we empirically investigate the impact of information technology (IT) investment on firm return and risk financial performance, emphasizing the moderating role of the firm boundary strategies of diversification and vertical integration. Our results indicate a sharp contrast between the direct and interactive effects of IT on both the return (profitability) and risk (variability of returns) dimensions. Although the direct effect of IT capital is to increase firm risk for a given level of return, we find that suitable boundary strategies can moderate the impact of IT on firm performance in a way that increases return and decreases risk, at the margin. This interaction effect is strongest in service firms, in firms with high levels of IT investment intensity, and in more recent time periods. Our results are robust to alternative proxies for firm risk, including an ex ante risk measure (variability of analysts' earnings estimates), and alternative risk-return specifications. Put together, our results provide new insights into how IT and firm boundary strategies interact to affect the risk and return performance of firms.

Abstract:Information technology (IT) can be the problem and solution for environmental sustainability. While IT is a source of environmental contamination during manufacturing and disposal, IT also presents opportunities for firms to greening IT and/or increasing their efficiency of resource use. We examine the role of IT as a solution possibility for environmental management and sustainability by analyzing how IT influences environmental performance. We propose a model in which IT influences environmental performance by enabling the integration of IT in environmental management processes. The proposed model is tested by using the variance-based structural equation modeling technique with matched-pair survey data from a sample of 151 Chinese firms. We find that: (1) Firm's proficiency in leveraging IT technical infrastructure flexibility, IT personnel skills and IT-business alignment enables the integration of IT in the environmental management processes to improve environmental performance, and (2) this IT integration is stronger when the firm is more oriented to environmental sustainability. We introduce to information systems community the construct IT-environmental management integration, and we explain theoretically and test empirically the role of IT-environmental management integration as a key mechanism through which IT competence influences environmental performance.
