Abstract:Objective To study prospectively the treatment outcomes of 2 kinds of vertebroplasty for thoraco-lumbar spine injury. Methods According to AO classification, all the 128 cases of thoraco-lumbar spine fracture in this study were of type A. they were divided into 2 groups randomly. In group A, 64 cases underwent vertebroplasty using liquid bone cement after pedicle screw fixation. Their sagittal indexes (SI) averaged 34before operation. In group B, 64 cases underwent vertebroplasty using solid bone cement after pedicle screw fixation. Their SI averaged 36before operation. Results Follow-ups averaged 18.5 months. In Group A, SI averaged 13and the height of the vertebral endplate loss averaged 4.0 mm after surgery. At the end of follow-up, no significant change was found. In group B, SI averaged 4.5and the height of the vertebral endplate loss averaged 1.0 mm after surgery. At the end of follow-up, no significant change was found. A significant difference in SI was not found between group A and group B before operation, but found in SI and the height of the vertebral endplate loss both after surgery and at the end of follow-up. Conclusions After reduction and fixation for the thoraco-lumbar spinal fracture, vertebroplasty using solid bone cement can fill the cava of the vertebral body, facilitate vertebral endplate reduction, and result in better outcomes than vertebroplasty using liquid bone cement. The long-term outcomes should be further studied.
