Abstract:Objective To establish the minimally invasive technique for observing the vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) by uretheral catheter in mice. Methods Twenty wild B6 mice with 10 males and 10 females were subjected to uretheral catheter with PUFC-C30-10 tube. A 22-gauge needle was attached via tubing to a syringe filled with Indian ink. The syringe was raised vertically from 10 to 90 cm in relation to the position of the mice. The VUR was confirmed when the Indian ink reflowed to the ureter. Results The successful rate of uretheral catheter was 100% (10/10) in females and 20% (2/10) in males (P<0. 01 ). The VUR rate was 90% (9/10) in females and 0 in males under the pressure of 90 cm H2O. The mean VUR pressure in female mice was (54. 5 ± 12. 2) cm H2O. One male mouse died in the process because of low temperature. Conclusion The uretheral catheter in mice can be used to detect the VUR and in almost all mice with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract. The VUR can be observed in normal female mice but not in normal male mice.
