Abstract:By Cartan's version of Nevanlinna's theory, we prove the following result: Let m and n be two positive integers satisfying n >= m + 2 and m >= 1, let p be a polynomial such that p not equivalent to 0, let eta be a finite complex number such that eta not equal 0 and Delta(eta)f not equivalent to 0, let alpha(1), alpha(2), ..., alpha(m) be m distinct finite nonzero complex numbers, and let H-j be either an exponential polynomial of degree less than q or an ordinary polynomial in z such that H-j not equivalent to 0 for 1 <= j <= m. Suppose that f is a nonconstant meromorphic solution of the difference equation f(n)(z) + p(z)Delta(eta) f(z) = H-1 (z) e(alpha 1zq) + H-2(z)e(alpha 2zq) + . . . + H-m(z)e(alpha mzq). Then m >= 2 and f is reduced to a transcendental entire function such that its order rho(f) = infinity or its order satisfies rho(f) = q with m = 2, while f can be either expressed as f(z) = A(1)(z)e(alpha 1zq), with A(1(z)) = H(1)f/p Delta(eta)f and n alpha(1)- alpha(2) = 0, or f(z) = A(2)(z)e(alpha 2zq), with A(2(z)) = H(2)f/p Delta(eta)f and n alpha(2)- alpha(1) = 0, where A(1) and A(2) are entire function such that their characteristic functions satisfy T (r, A(j)) = o(T (r, f)), 1 <= j <= 2, as r is not an element of E and r -> infinity. Here, E subset of (0, + infinity) is a subset of finite linear measure. An example is provided to show that the assumption n >= m + 2, in a sense, is the best possible. This result improves and extends the corresponding results from Yang-Laine (2010), Liu-Lu-Shen- Yang (2014), and Latreuch (2017).
