Abstract:Objective To investigate root resorption of the maxillary incisors before retraction in patients with protrusion and to explore the possible risk factors. Methods 50 patients with protrusion malocclusion treated with bilateral maxillary first premolars extractions and high anchorage were selected. The periapical radiographs of the maxillary incisors using paralleling technique and cephalograms were obtained before treatment(T1) and before retraction(T2).Root resorption values of each incisor were measured and root forms at T1 were diagnosed. The inclination angle, the position and the changes of the maxillary central incisors were measured.Other diagnosis and treatment parameters were also recorded.Descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis were done. Results ① In the stage before incisor retraction, the average root resorption values were (0.73± 0.53)mm for the central incisors and (0.84±0.70)mm for the lateral incisors.② 3% of the central incisors and 6% of the lateral incisors showed more than 2 mm of root resorption.③ Multivariate linear regression showed that abnormal root morphology, increased T1-to-T2 time period, decreased distance from the root apices to the cortical bone surface, small inclination angle and maxillary anterior crowding were the risk factors for central incisor root resorption.Similarly, abnormal root morphology, maxillary anterior crowding, increased T1-to-T2 time period and long root were the risk factors for the lateral incisors. Conclusions A number of root resorption was found for maxillary incisors before retraction in patients with protrusion, and a small percentage of patients with higher risks had severe root resorption. Some risk factors were found for root resorption of the maxillary incisors in the stage before retraction, but they can only account for 30% of root resorption
