Abstract:Objective To explore the application of Friendly cemented stems for hip arthroplasty in old patients with femoral neck fracture. Methods 31 cases of hip arthroplasty were carried out in our department between Jun. 2002 and Jun. 2004 for the old patients with femoral neck fracture. The mean age of the patients at the time of replacement was 73 years old (ranging from 68 to 85 years). The operations were done with Friendly stems which were fixed with the so-called fourth-generation cementing techniques. Their clinical results were analyzed. Results All the patients were followed up 3 months after operation. The quality of cement was evaluated according to the radiograph of the hip. 29 cases were rated as Grade A and 2 Grade B, without Grade C or D. There was no dislocation of the hip and the Trendelenburg tests for all the patients with hip arthroplasty were negative. The difference between the lengths of both lower extremities was (3.41.8) mm and the average Harris score of the hip was 8510 at the time of follow-up. Conclusion With improved femoral component design and method of fixation, the Friendly cemented stems can resolve such problems as the difficulties in fixation and in soft tissue balance in the hip arthroplasty for the old patients with femoral neck fracture.
