Abstract:Objective To explore biomechanical changes in long tubular bone due to different cor-tical bone defects at sizes and locations. Methods Seventy-two femurs of adult goat were used in this study. Circular cortical defects were created by drills at the mid-point of the long tubular bone at tension/ compression sites. They were divided into tension and compression groups accordingly. Diameters of the de-fects were made as 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% of the coronal diameter. Three-point bending test was performed for each sample. Biomechanical parameters were maximum strength, maximum work and elastic module. The diameters of coronal and sagittal planes, and the thickness of cortical bone at tension and com-pression sites were recorded for each sample. Normal goat femurs were tested as controls. Results The diameters and thicknesses of the cortical bone were insignificantly different between groups. The maximum strength significantly decreased in the group with 50% defect at tension side and in the groups with 30%, 40%, 50% defects at compression side. The maximum work significantly decreased in groups with 30%, 40%, 50% defects at tension side and in groups with 10%~50% defects at compression side. The elastic module showed no significant difference among tension groups, compression groups and the control group. Conclusions Cortical bone defects may have influence on biomechanical performance of the long tubular bone. The influence may be different depending on the tension site or the compression site.
