Abstract:AbstractCuprous oxide microcrystals with {111}, {111}/{100}, and {100} exposed facets were synthesized. 31P MAS NMR using trimethylphosphine as the probe molecule was employed to study the acidic properties of samples. It was found that the total acidic density of samples increases evidently after sulfation compared with the pristine cuprous oxide microcrystals. During sulfation, new {100} facets are formed at the expense of {111} facets and lead to the generation of two Lewis acid sites due to the different binding states of SO42− on {111} and {100} facets. Moreover, DFT calculation was used to illustrate the binding models of SO42− on {111} and {100} facets. Also, a Pechmann condensation reaction was applied to study the acidic catalytic activity of these samples. It was found that the sulfated {111} facet has better activity due to its higher Lewis acid density compared with the sulfated {100} facet.
Stabilizing Cu0/Cu2+ Interface by Hydroxy-Rich Amorphous SiO2 for Enhanced Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Ethylene

Abstract:Constructing a stable Cu-0/Cu2+ interface is critical for enhancing the C-C coupling during the process of CO2 electroreduction. However, the high-valence Cu species are unstable under the operating conditions. Herein, polyhedral-shaped CuO is coated with hydroxy-rich SiO2 nanoparticles (m-SiO2/CuO) to stabilize the Cu2+ species, enabling efficient CO2 reduction to the ethylene product. Significantly, the optimal m-SiO2/CuO catalyst exhibits an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 55.5 % and an industrial-level partial current density of 500 mA cm(-2) toward ethylene. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra reveal that the strong interfacial interaction between CuO and hydroxy-rich SiO2 is conducive to stabilizing the Cu2+ species. In-situ characterizations reveal that the Cu-0/Cu2+ interface facilitates CO2 activation and the key intermediate *OCCHO, thus promoting the production of ethylene. This work paves the way for developing advanced electro-catalysts of producing ethylene.

Abstract:Crystal structure, surface morphology, surface chemical composition and photocurrent response curves of the thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical workstation. The results show that the composite thin films are composed of CuO and Cu 2 O phase. The relative content of copper (I) oxide on the composite thin films increases with the increase of solution concentration. Leaf-like CuO particles have been observed on the thin film grown in the 0.5 mol/L solution. Some regular octahedral and truncated octahedral Cu 2 O particles have been observed on the surface of thin films grown in the 0.6 and 0.8 mol/L solution, respectively. The best photocurrent response and the fastest growth and decay have been observed in the thin film grown in 0.6 mol/L solution.

Abstract:The whole range of processes occurring at a single crystal Cu(111) electrode in a sulfuric acid electrolyte (5mMH2SO4) between hydrogen evolution and copper dissolution has been studied using a combination of Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), in situ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), and in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) as well as ex situ characterization by means of Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED). In particular, in situ STM measurements with atomic resolution, carried out under various conditions, namely in the poten-tiostatic, potentiodynamic and quasi-spectroscopic mode, provide very detailed and direct information about the following interfacial properties and processes: the adsorption and desorption kinetics of the sulfate anions; the structure of the sulfate adlayer and the reconstruction of the copper surface underneath including drastic morphological changes of the electrode surface; the absolute adsorption geometry of individual SO4/2- anions; the anodic copper corrosion and redeposition as well as the formation of cationic adsorbate (probably hydronium) layers in the regime of hydrogen evolution. Altogether the results demonstrate that already a relatively simple system such as Cu(111) in sulfuric acid solution may exhibit a surprisingly high degree of complexity.

Abstract:The effect of Na 2 S 2 O 8 on Cu 2 O surface oxidation and leaching was investigated, and the presence of Na 2 S 2 O 8 transforms the surface of Cu 2 O into more easily leachable CuO, resulting in a 35.50% increase in the extraction rate of Cu than that without Na 2 S 2 O 8 . In the acid leaching system, O atoms combined with H + to form H 2 O, which was continuously separated from the surface to form vacancies. Cu(I) on the mineral surface formed Cu(0) and Cu(II), of which Cu(II) separated from the mineral surface and entered the solution, while Cu(0) was reconstructed on the surface, and a Cu-Cu metal bond with a bond length of 2.40 Å was appeared in the DFT calculation, which caused the content of Cu atom on the surface to be higher than that of O atom. After oxidation, high-spin Cu(II) contributed by the 3 d orbital appeared on the mineral surface. The Cu(II) content of the oxidized Cu 2 O surface was 19.80% higher than that of the pure Cu 2 O surface, indicating that the copper on the oxidized Cu 2 O surface was more easily extracted. Moreover, the adsorption energy of chemical adsorption occurring in the presence of oxidant (−1.91 eV) was more negative than that in the absence of oxidant (−0.21 eV).

Abstract:The oxidation of pyrite in copper-containing sulfuric acid has been the subject of intense research yet has no comprehensive research on electrochemistry and surface species. In this study, pyrite's electrochemical oxidation mechanism was systematically elucidated in copper-containing sulfuric acid by using electrochemical techniques. Anodic processes occurring in active, passive, and transpassive dissolution regions were studied by linear sweep voltammetry. The corresponding equivalent electrochemical circuits were fitted for these three regions with the potential of ranging from 0.40 V to 0.80 V vs SCE, and the results of fittings were used to clarify the characteristics of electrodes and electrochemical reactions in copper-containing sulfuric acid. With increasing potential, the reactions on the pyrite surface accelerated, and its roughness significantly increased. In addition, the interfacial transfer of electrons is dominated by surface charge transfer. The products of pyrite surface oxidation were identified by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the results of the electrochemical methods and surface analysis techniques, the mechanism of pyrite oxidation can be clarified and the specific course of the reaction can be described in detail. These results provided further insight into a better understanding of the pyrite oxidation mechanism in the presence of copper ions.

Abstract:The dynamic redox process of surface oxide layers on metal surfaces is of great significance for understanding the active phase in catalytic reactions. We studied the formation of surface oxide layers on Cu(111) and Cu(110) in O2, as well as the subsequent reduction by CO using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). By monitoring and comparing the oxidation process of Cu(111) and Cu(110) surfaces, we found a crystal-plane-dependent reaction mechanism, which also applies to the reduction of surface oxide layers on Cu surfaces. We found XPS Cu spectra cannot be used to identify the various surface oxide layer on Cu surfaces, suggesting their presence in catalytic reactions might have been overlooked. The combination of STM and XPS studies are thus advantageous in identifying surface oxide structures and pinpointing the active phases in the redox process, which paves the way for engineering the catalyst and reaction environment for optimized catalytic performances.

Abstract:In this article we innovatively propose a new surface modification strategy which applies a chronoamperometry on CuPdAu/C to get the surface copper removed CuAuPd/C (SCR-CuAuPd/C). Moreover, the chronoamperometric process can also modify the surface constitution with oxides such as PdO2 and Au2O3. The removal of surface Cu will diminish the drawbacks brought by the instability of surface Cu in alkaline media, and the oxides like PdO2 will help oxidize COad and thus reduce catalyst poisoning. The electrochemical measurements confirm the positive effect of chronoamperometric treatment, the SCR-CuPdAu/C achieve objective progress after chronoamperometric treatment, with highest activity and anti-poisoning properties toward formic acid/formate oxidation in both acidic and alkaline media.

Abstract:Surface atomic structure is closely related to the physical and chemical properties of materials. Although cupric oxide (CuO) surfaces have been widely reported, to the best of our knowledge, the low Miller index and easily exposed CuO(001) surface has not been yet investigated in experiments at the atomic scale. Herein, for the first time, we report the atomic structures of CuO(001) surface combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Interestingly, akin to the (111) surfaces of FeO, CoO and NiO, a unusual tetrahedral reconstructed structure was revealed for the CuO(001) surface. The low energy barrier from square-planar to tetrahedral coordination for the surface CuO4 unit was found by the climbing-image nudged-elastic band method.

Abstract:Cu-catalyzed selective electrocatalytic upgrading of carbon dioxide/monoxide to valuable multicarbon oxygenates and hydrocarbons is an attractive strategy for combating climate change. Despite recent research on Cu-based catalysts for the CO2 and CO reduction reactions, surface speciation of the various types of Cu surfaces under reaction conditions remains a topic of discussion. Herein, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is employed to investigate the speciation of four commonly used Cu surfaces, i.e., Cu foil, Cu micro/nanoparticles, electrochemically deposited Cu film, and oxide-derived Cu, at potentials relevant to the CO reduction reaction in an alkaline electrolyte. Multiple oxide and hydroxide species exist on all Cu surfaces at negative potentials, however, the speciation on the Cu foil is distinct from that on micro/nanostructured Cu. The surface speciation is demonstrated to correlate with the initial degree of oxidation of the Cu surface prior to the exposure to negative potentials. Combining reactivity and spectroscopic results on these four types of Cu surfaces, we conclude that the oxygen containing surface species identified by Raman spectroscopy are unlikely to be active in facilitating the formation of C2+ oxygenates in the CO reduction reaction.

Surface Structure to Tailor the Electrochemical Behavior of Mixed-Valence Copper Sulfides during Water Electrolysis

Abstract:The semiconducting behavior of mixed-valence copper sulfides arises from the pronounced covalency of Cu-S bonds and the exchange coupling between CuI and CuII centers. Although electrocatalytic study with digenite Cu9S5 and covellite CuS has been performed earlier, detailed redox chemistry and its interpretation through lattice structure analysis have never been realized. Herein, nanostructured Cu9S5 and CuS are prepared and used as electrode materials to study their electrochemistry. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and microscopic studies have found the exposed surface of Cu9S5 to be d(0015) and d(002) for CuS. Tetrahedral (Td) CuII, distorted octahedral (Oh) CuII, and trigonal planar (Tp) CuI sites form the d(0015) surface of Cu9S5, while the (002) surface of CuS consists of only Td CuII. The distribution of CuI and CuII sites in the lattice, predicted by PXRD, can further be validated through core-level Cu 2p X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The difference in the electrochemical response of Cu9S5 and CuS arises predominantly from the different copper sites present in the exposed surfaces and their redox states. In situ Raman spectra recorded during cyclic voltammetric study indicates that Cu9S5 is more electrochemically labile compared to CuS and transforms rapidly to CuO/Cu2O. Contact-angle and BET analyses imply that a high-surface-energy and macroporous Cu9S5 surface favors the electrolyte diffusion, which leads to a pronounced redox response. Post-chronoamperometric (CA) characterizations identify the potential-dependent structural transformation of Cu9S5 and CuS to CuO/Cu2O/Cu(OH)2 electroactive species. The performance of the in situ formed copper-oxides towards electrocatalytic water-splitting is superior compared to the pristine copper sulfides. In this study, the redox chemistry of the Cu9S5/CuS has been correlated to the atomic arrangements and coordination geometry of the surface exposed sites. The structure-activity correlation provides in-depth knowledge of how to interpret the electrochemistry of metal sulfides and their in situ potential-driven surface/bulk transformation pathway to evolve the active phase.

Abstract:Copper (Cu), a promising catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) to multi-electron reduction products, suffers from an unavoidable and uncontrollable reconstruction process during the reaction, which not only may lead to catalyst deactivation but also brings great challenges to the exploration of the structure-performance relationship. Herein, we present an efficient strategy for stabilizing Cu with silica and synthesize reconstruction-resistant CuSiOx amorphous nanotube catalysts with abundant atomic Cu-O-Si interfacial sites. The strong interfacial interaction between Cu and silica makes the Cu-O-Si interfacial sites ultrastable in the CO2R reaction without any apparent reconstruction, thus exhibiting high CO2-to-CH4 selectivity (72.5%) and stability (FECH4 remains above 60% after 12 h of test). A remarkable CO2-to-CH4 conversion rate of 0.22 μmol cm-2 s-1 was also achieved in a flow cell device. This work provides a very promising route for the design of highly active and stable Cu-based CO2R catalysts.
Metal-organic Layers Induce in Situ Nano-Structuring of Cu Surface in Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention for its capability in electrocatalytically reducing CO2 to a variety of products. Surface modification of Cu has become an interesting method for tuning the catalytic performance. Here, we use Zr-based metal-organic layers (MOLs) as the additive of the Cu surface, which enhanced the Faradaic efficiency of CH4 by two times as compared to the untreated polycrystalline Cu foil. Unexpectedly, the MOLs were found to induce in situ nano-structuring of the Cu foil surface within seconds in the electrolysis, as revealed by a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry (GIXRD), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) measurements. These surface changes are responsible for the shift of product selectivity. Control experiments suggest that negatively charged μ3-O− on the Zr-cluster in the MOL might interact with CO-covered Cu surface and induce roughing and nano-structuring. This work reveals a potential role of additive on Cu to induce surface nano-structuring that tunes catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Copper (Cu)-based materials are known as the most attractive catalysts for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), especially the Cu+ species (e.g., Cu2O), which show excellent capability for catalyzing CO2 to C2+ chemicals because of their unique electronic structure. However, the active Cu+ species are prone to be reduced to metallic Cu under an electroreduction environment, thus resulting in fast deactivation and poor selectivity. Here, we developed an advanced surface modification strategy to maintain the active Cu+ species via assembling a protective layer of metal-organic framework (copper benzenetricarboxylate, CuBTC) on the surface of Cu2O octahedron (Cu2O@CuBTC). It's encouraging to see that the Cu2O@CuBTC heterostructure outperforms the bare Cu2O octahedron in catalyzing CO2 to C2+ chemicals and dramatically enhances the ratio of C2H4/CH4 products. A systematic study reveals that the introduced CuBTC shell plays a critical role in maintaining the active Cu+ species in Cu2O@CuBTC heterostructure under reductive conditions. This work offers a practical strategy for improving the catalytic performance of CO2RR over copper oxides and also establishes a route to maintain the state of valence-sensitive catalysts.

Abstract:Facile and controllable methodologies capable of providing single atom catalysts (SACs) with high-density active metal sites and sintering-resistance under harsh conditions are highly desired and grand challenges in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, the entropy effect was leveraged to stabilize and manipulate the electronic properties of copper SACs. The as-developed ultrasonication-driven approach could integrate highly concentrated Cu SAs within the lattice of fluorite-structured high entropy oxide (HEFO) under ambient conditions (CuO-HEFO). The dual benefits from the high entropy effect of the support and the in-situ lattice engineering led to the generation of abundant Cu 1+ species and oxygen defects, together with ultra-high stability and sintering-resistance under extremely harsh conditions. This was confirmed by deploying non-high entropy support (CuO-CeO 2 ) or Cu sites located on the surface of HEFO (CuO@HEFO). The catalytic activity of CuO-HEFO surpassed that of CuO-CeO 2 and CuO@HEFO in CO oxidation together with well-maintained long-term stability and resistance to gas impurities.

Abstract:Cu-based electrocatalysts have provoked much attention for their high activity and selectivity in carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion into multi-carbon hydrocarbons. However, during the electrochemical reaction, Cu catalysts inevitably undergo surface reconstruction whose impact on CO2 conversion performance remains contentious. Here we report that polycrystalline Cu nanoparticles (denoted as Cu-s) with rich high-index facets, derived from Cu2−xS through desulphurization and surface reconstruction, offer an excellent platform for investigating the role of surface reconstruction in electrocatalytic CO2 conversion. During the formation of Cu-s catalyst, the two stages of desulphurization and surface reconstruction can be clearly resolved by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and OH− adsorption characterizations, which are well correlated with the changes in electrocatalytic performance. It turns out that the high CO2 conversion performance, achieved by the Cu-s catalyst (Faradic efficiency of 68.6% and partial current density of 40.8 mA/cm2 in H-cell toward C2H4 production), is attributed to the increased percentage of high-index facets in Cu-s during the surface reconstruction. Furthermore, the operando electrochemical Raman spectroscopy further reveals that the conversion of the CO2 into the C2H4 on Cu-s is intermediated by the production of *COCHO. Our findings manifest that the surface reconstruction is an effective method for tuning the reaction intermediate of the CO2 conversion toward high-value multicarbon (C2+) chemicals, and highlight the significance of in situ characterizations in enhancing the understanding of the surface structure and its role in electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Porous Cu-doped alumina (P-Cu-Al2O3) has been synthesized using ammonium chloride as a green gaseous template. The unique pore-forming agent endows the catalyst a large surface area and homogenous pore structure. According to the characterization results by multi-technologies, the highly dispersed framework Cu+/Cu2+ was incorporated in octahedral sites with the formation of the Cu-O-Al bonds. Compared with bulk Cu-doped Al2O3 (B-Cu-Al2O3), more surface acidic oxygen-containing groups and Lewis acid sites existed in P-Cu-Al2O3, resulting in the production of surface adsorbed •OH, which is helpful for the removal of surface adsorbed organic intermediates. In addition, O2 more easily participate in surface reaction to promote the •OH generation in P-Cu-Al2O3 system than that in B-Cu-Al2O3. As a result, the representative endocrine disruptor bisphenol A can be more efficiently mineralized by P-Cu-Al2O3. This work provides a facile route to develop porous active heterogenous Fenton-like catalysts and a unique perspective to insight into the structure-activity relationship.
