Abstract:In this study, a series of copper species supported on TiO2 catalysts were synthesized. With respect to the CuO/TiO2 catalyst, around 75% NOx was reduced between 200 and 250 degrees C and a negative deNO(x) efficiency was achieved above 350 degrees C. The existence of plentiful reactive surface oxygen species favored the activation of NOx and NH3, thus leading to satisfactory activity levels at lower temperatures. Due to this, NH3 over-oxidized to NOx was also facilitated and the portion of NH3 reducing NOx to N-2 or N2O in the reactions showed a downward trend as temperature increased, which explained the decreasing high-temperature NOx removal efficiency of this sample. For CuSO4/TiO2 and SO2-treated CuO/TiO2 catalysts, the generation of plentiful strong acid sites at the expense of the reactive surface oxygen species suppressed the activation of NH3 and NOx to some extent at lower temperatures and also negatively affected the over-oxidation of NH3 to NOx at elevated temperatures, which explained the changes in the operating temperature window to a high temperature region.
Tolerance of Cu-SSZ-13 Catalysts to Potassium Sulfate: Strong Brønsted Acid Sites and Copper Species

Abstract:Potassium sulfate is one of the most important impurities deposited on NH3-SCR catalysts from alkali-rich gas exhausts. In this work, two Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts synthesized by one-pot and ion-exchange methods were compared for their tolerance to potassium sulfate. The evolutions of copper species and acid sites, as the critical mechanisms of K2SO4 poisoning, were revealed by comprehensive characterizations. It was found that Si-O(H)-Al sites act as sacrificing sites upon K+ attacking to preserve Cu2+ ions as active sites. ZCuOH sites are preferentially detached by K+ ion-exchange and trapped predominantly by the surface sulfate anions as inactive Cu2OSO4. Therefore, the one-pot Cu-SSZ-13, with abundant acid sites and high Z2Cu proportion, shows superior K2SO4 resistance than the ion-exchanged catalyst.

The deactivation mechanism is probed by the changes of structural, copper species, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity. The variations concentrate on the changes of copper species as the Chabazite (CHA) framework of Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts could keep intact at high ratios of SO3/SOx. The thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) results reveal that the copper sulfate formed during sulfation and the amounts of sulfate species increased with an increase in the SO3/SOx ratio. In contrast to the changing trend of copper sulfate, temperature program reduction (H2-TPR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results manifest that, since the number of active copper ions declines with an increase of the SO3/SOx ratio, the active sites transform to these inactive species during sulfation. Due to the combination of NH3-SCR activity and the kinetic tests, it is shown that the decreased number of active sites is responsible for the declined SCR activity at low temperature. As Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts show excellent acid-resistance ability, our study reveals that the Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst is a good candidate for NOx elimination, especially when SO3 exists.

Abstract:Sulfur species inactivate Cu ions and lead to inferior SCR activity below 400 °C;Copper bisulfate and ammonium bisulfate can be inter-transformed;NO+O2 convert ammonium bisulfate to copper bisulfate, which is difficult in recovery;NH3 adsorption helps to decompose sulfate species and recover SCR activity easily.In order to investigate sulfate poisoning of Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts used for NOx removal by selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR), they were exposed to SO2 at different temperatures in the presence and absence of NH3. Standard physicochemical characterization and density functional theory calculations were performed to probe the nature of the sulfate species formed on the catalyst and the corresponding effects. The results showed that sulfate poisoning has little effect on the chabazite structure of the catalyst, but the sulfate species formed blocks the Cu/SSZ-13 pores. For sulfation with pure SO2, copper bisulfate forms and its content increases with sulfation temperature. However, in the presence of NH3, the major sulfate formed is ammonium bisulfate (~80%). Moreover, the total sulfate contents are lower for higher sulfation temperatures because of difficulties in ammonium bisulfate formation. Regardless of the kind of sulfate species formed, the poisoning leads to lower availability of active sites, causing inferior NOx conversion. Abstract:Cu-chabazite based catalysts (Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-34) may suffer from chemical deactivation due to the deposition of alkali impurities on the surface of wall-flow particulate filters. In this work, the resistance of two Cu-CHA catalysts to potassium poisoning was compared, and the key factors affecting preservation and evolution of Cu2+ ions were ascertained based on the experimental characterizations and DFT calculations. The feasibility of atom (Cu and H) at various sites (6MR and 8MR) in different types of zeolites (SSZ-13 and SAPO-34) upon K+ attacking was compared. The stability of isolated Cu2+ ions in the zeolite framework and the aggregates of detached copper species determined the catalytic performance of the poisoned catalysts.

Abstract:Benefiting from the exceptional selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR) activity, excellent N2 selectivity, and superior hydrothermal durability, the Cu2+-exchanged zeolite catalyst with a chabazite structure (Cu-CHA) has been considered the predominant SCR catalyst in nitrogen oxide (NOx) abatement. However, sulfur poisoning remains one of the most significant deterrents to the catalyst in real applications. This review summarizes the NH3-SCR reaction mechanism on Cu-CHA, including the active sites and the nature of hydrothermal aging resistance. On the basis of the NH3-SCR reaction mechanism, the review gives a comprehensive summary of sulfate species, sulfate loading, emitted gaseous composition, and the impact of exposure temperature/time on Cu-CHA. The nature of the regeneration of sulfated catalysts is also covered in this review. The review gives a valuable summary of new insights into the matching between the design of NH3-SCR activity and sulfur resistance, highlighting the opportunities and challenges presented by Cu-CHA. Guidance for future sulfur poisoning diagnosis, effective regeneration strategies, and a design for an efficient catalyst for the aftertreatment system (ATS) are proposed to minimize the deterioration of NOx abatement in the future. Finally, we call for more attention to be paid to the effects of PO43- and metal co-cations with sulfur in the ATS.

Abstract:This study focuses on exploring the impact of sulfur poisoning and regeneration on the performance and active sites of Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst. It was found that sulfured samples had obviously lower conversion than fresh samples below 350 °C, and thermal regeneration at 550 °C could not totally remove sulfate species. These catalysts were also comprehensively characterized by H2-TPR, TPD, NH3-TPO, NO-TPO, and BET. SO2 and NH3 co-adsorbed on the Z2Cu sites to form ammonia sulfate species, however, they went through the two-step decomposition reaction during regeneration. SO2 interacted more tightly with ZCuOH to form copper bisulfite species. SO2 was oxidized by CuxOy species to further form sulfate species. Si-O(H)-Al bond could be sulfur poisoned when Cu species in the catalysts. Additionally, sulfated species could block pores, but not lead to structure collapse. Furthermore, in situ DRIFTS results illustrated that active sites and nitrates/nitrites storage capacity decreased after sulfur poisoning.

Abstract:Cu-exchanged chabazite zeolite (Cu-HA) is one of the most effective catalysts for ammonia-assisted selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) in diesel exhaust systems. However, this catalyst is sensitive to small amounts of SO2 in the exhaust gases, causing a deactivation after prolonged exposure. To have a better understanding of the effect of Si/Al ratio of zeolite on the SO2 exposure of Cu-CHA catalysts, we measured in situ Diffuse Reflectance UV-Vis NIR spectroscopy, SO2 uptake, and deactivation of SO2 poisoned Cu-CHA catalysts with the same Cu loading (3.2 wt%) and different Si/Al ratio (6.7, 11 and 15) at 200 oC. SO2 selectively reacts with an oxygen-bridged diamine dicopper (II) complex [CuII2(NH3)4O2]2+, resulting in 50% deactivation in all catalysts, with an SO2 uptake which varies from 0.2 S/Cu ratio for the catalyst with Si/Al = 6.7, to S/Cu = 0.12 for Si/Al = 15. For the fresh catalysts, the NH3-SCR activity decreases as the Si/Al ratio increases from 6.7 to 15, as also indicated by the amount of [CuII2(NH3)4O2]2+ complexes. After exposure of the [CuII2(NH3)4O2]2+ complex to SO2, the change in UV-Vis spectra correlates well with the SO2 uptake and the expected Cu-species formed for all three Si/Al ratios. This suggests that, under the applied conditions, the SO2 reaction with [CuII2(NH3)4O2]2+ complex in Cu-CHA does not depend on the Si/Al ratio.

Abstract:In order to probe the nature of regeneraion on the sulfated Cu/SAPO-34 selective catalytic reduction catalysts, CHA structure, copper species, and NO, conversion were investigated. A sulfated Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst was treated at different temperatures and times. The ammonia-sulfate species was removed at 500 degrees C, and copper sulfate was completely decompose at 750 degrees C. The NO, conversion of sulfated catalyst gradually recovers with the degree of regeneration increasing. XRD and ex situ DRIFTs results show that thermal treatment presents no effect on the framework structure of Cu/SAPO-34. The TPR and EPR results suggest that thermal treatment has an influence on the number of isolated Cu2+ and CuO instead of coordination environment and redox ability. However, the apparent activation energy of fresh, sulfated, and regenerated catalysts for SCR reaction remains the same, and turnover frequencies are also identical. The study reveals that the activity recovery is attributed to the increased number of active sites by sulfate species decomposition and migration effect.
New Insight into the in Situ SO2 Poisoning Mechanism over Cu-SSZ-13 for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:To reveal the nature of SO2 poisoning over Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst under actual exhaust conditions, the catalyst was pretreated at 200 and 500 °C in a flow containing NH3, NO, O2, SO2, and H2O. Brunner−Emmet−Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA), ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy (UV Raman), temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), temperature-programmed desorption of NO+O2 (NO+O2-TPD), NH3-TPD, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS), and an activity test were utilized to monitor the changes of Cu-SSZ-13 before and after in situ SO2 poisoning. According to the characterization results, the types and generated amount of sulfated species were directly related to poisoning temperature. Three sulfate species, including (NH4)2SO4, CuSO4, and Al2(SO4)3, were found to form on CZ-S-200, while only the latter two sulfate species were observed over CZ-S-500. Furthermore, SO2 poisoning had a negative effect on low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity, which was mainly due to the sulfation of active sites, including Z2Cu, ZCuOH, and Si-O(H)-Al. In contrast, SO2 poisoning had a positive effect on high-temperature SCR activity, owing to the inhibition of the NH3 oxidation reaction. The above findings may be a useful guideline to design excellent SO2-resistant Cu-based zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:The MgAlFe mixed oxides derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds was impregnated with copper and tested for SO2 removal under conditions similar to those of FCC units. By XRD, TG-DTG, BET and IR analysis, the sulfur transfer catalysts with 0.5–3.0% copper exhibited a better dispersion of copper in the precursor. The results of SO2 adsorption–reduction test showed that the novel Cu/MgAlFe catalysts with 0.5–5.0% copper oxide achieved high oxidative adsorption rate and sulfur absorptive capacity, and did not affect the rate of reductive reaction and reducibility.
Influence of the Chemical Composition of MgAlFeCu Mixed Oxides As Catalysts for SO2Removal

Abstract:A series of MgAlFeCu mixed oxides with different chemical compositions derived from hydrotalcite-like compounds were prepared by the NaAlO2-coprecipitation method and characterized by XRF, XRD, and N-2 adsorption analysis. These sulfur-transfer catalysts were evaluated as SOx removal catalysts under the conditions similar to those of FCC units. The results showed that the total SO2 adsorption amounts increased with increasing magnesium content. And the redox properties of Fe2O3 enhanced significantly the adsorption-reduction capacities of the catalysts, while CuO can be used as an effective oxidation promoter. Furthermore, the catalyst LDOs-6 (Mg/Al = 6, Fe2O3% = 8% and CuO% = 1%) presented the excellent SO2 removal capacity, its total amounts of adsorbed SO2 reached 1.74 g /g in 7 min, which also remained constant after eight cycles. These results indicated that the performances of the catalysts were closely related to the chemical composition.

Abstract:The in-depth mechanism of the influence of copper species on SCR performance and zeolite structure for Cu-zeolite catalysts under rigorous conditions has not been explicated clearly yet. Herein, a feasible strategy to improve the hydrothermal stability of Cu/SAPO-34 by adjusting the copper coordination environment were proposed. The zeolite frameworks of designed 1Cu/S-F and 2Cu/S-F only with isolated Cu 2+ -2Z ions, which located in the six-membered ring (6MR) remain almost unchanged during hydrothermal aging at 800 °C owing to the steadiness of Al-(OH)-Si (1Cu/S-800 and 2Cu/S-800). However, terrible dealumination occurred on 4Cu/S-800 due to the creation of relatively unstable Cu(OH)] + -Z (8MR) and non-framework CuO species as well as the depletion of Al-(OH)-Si bonds in 4Cu/S-F, thus leading to worst SCR activity. Benefiting from the ample isolated Cu 2+ ions and the protection of the zeolite framework, the 2Cu/S-F catalyst displayed outstanding thermal stability and SO 2 + H 2 O resistance. Besides, proved by in situ DRIFTS and reaction kinetics, a dynamic NH 3 -SCR reaction mechanism was proposed: SCR reaction over both 2Cu/S-F and 2Cu/S-800 catalysts followed the L-H and E-R routes synchronously. Notably, the NO x reaction rates of 2Cu/S-800 were faster than that of 2Cu/S-F because of the formation of Cu(OH)] + -Z species, which was more active than Cu 2+ -2Z.

Abstract:The deactivation mechanism by different types of sulfate was investigated for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx on Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst. A Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst was treated with 50 ppm SO2 alone at 150 and 250 degrees C or in the presence of a SCR feed at 250 and 350 degrees C. Copper sulfate was found on all sulfated catalysts, but ammonia sulfate was found only on the catalyst sulfated in the SCR feed at 250 degrees C. In situ DRIFTs results show that both copper sulfate and ammonia sulfate species are formed on the isolated Cu2+ sites. All sulfated catalysts have lower NOx conversions compared with the Unsulfated catalysts due to reduced number of active sites. However, their apparent activation energies fot the SCR reaction remain the same, and their turnover frequencies are identical. This suggests that the deactivation mechanism is similar regardless of the type of sulfate species. On the other hand, it was found that ammonia sulfate was easier to remove than copper sulfate by a desulfation treatment at 600 degrees C, resulting in a larger extent of activity recovery. Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 has been generally considered as the predominant commercial selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst in the NH3-SCR reaction because of its superior activity and durability. However, in real applications, SCR catalysts readily undergo hydrothermal aging and sulfur poisoning. In this work, the deactivation and regeneration of a commercial Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst was investigated for SO2 exposures during hydrothermal aging and the effect of different regeneration temperatures was compared. By using XRD, SEM, H2-temperature programmed reduction (TPR), X–ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and NH3-temperature programmed desorption (TPD) analysis, it was found that SO2 poisoning influenced the chabazite (CHA) structure even if regeneration cannot restore its original structure, the redox ability and ammonia storage performance also influenced by sulfation and the regeneration process. Moreover, the extent of a decrease in redox ability was more severe than acidity, suggesting that the amount of isolated Cu2+ and Cu+ reduction was responsible for irreversible deactivation over the Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst. Combined with the analysis of Ea values and pre-exponential factor of the SCR reaction, a more likely explanation for the irreversible deactivation was that active sites were lost mostly in sulfated and regenerated process sites.

Abstract:The Cu-based transition-metal-oxide catalysts were widely applied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), but limited in practical application because of the inferior catalytic performance at high temperatures. To counter this issue, we designed a facile in situ strategy to obtain sulfated CuCeZr catalysts, on which the sulfation degree could be precisely controlled without any further post-treatment. The sulfated CuCeZr catalysts not only show broader SCR reaction temperature window and promoted N-2 selectivity, but also demonstrate satisfactory tolerance to H2O and SO2. The outcomes indicate that stronger surface acidity, weaker reducibility and excellent stability for adsorbing NH3 on the sulfated CuCeZr catalysts greatly suppress the undesired excessive oxidation of NH3 at high temperatures, which enhance the high-temperature activity and N-2 selectivity. Furthermore, the transient in situ DRIFT and steady-state kinetic studies reveal that both unsulfated and sulfated catalysts mainly follow the Eley-Rideal mechanism.

Abstract:In diesel vehicle exhaust after-treatment systems, high silica Cu-SSZ-13 has received increasing attention as a commercialized catalyst owing to its high efficiency in selective catalytic reduction reactions with NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). However, research on the regulation of Cu 2+ species within metal active centers in the pore structure of chabazite (CHA)-type zeolite to improve catalytic performance lacks sufficient depth. Herein, SSZ-13 zeolite with various Al distributions was prepared by adjusting the proportion of N,N,N-Trimethyl-1-adamantanaminiumhydroxide (TMAdaOH) and Na in the initial gel. Moreover, three representative Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Cu 2+ species were synthesized via an ion exchange method. 23 Na MAS NMR and NO adsorption infrared spectroscopy results revealed that with increasing Na content and decreasing TMAdaOH concentration in the initial gel, the number of paired Al in the CHA framework gradually increased. Consequently, this increased the number of Cu 2+ -2Z sites near six-membered ring (MR) and reduced the amount of [Cu(OH)] + -Z sites near eight-MR. The fresh Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst, with a moderate amount of Cu 2+ -2Z and [Cu(OH)] + -Z, exhibited optimal catalytic performance across the entire temperature window. After hydrothermal aging, Cu-SSZ-13 with a higher concentration of Cu 2+ -2Z species featured optimal performance among all Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts above 400 °C. These findings indicated the significance of balancing the amount of both Cu 2+ -2Z and [Cu(OH)] + -Z in the Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite. Additionally, the results elucidated the reaction intermediates involved in the NH 3 -SCR process catalyzed by Cu-SSZ-13 with various Cu species.
