Abstract:Applications of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene in thermal management have recently attracted significant attention. However, the lack of efficient prediction formula for heat transfer coefficient between nanomaterials and gas environment limits the further development of this technique. In this work, a kinetic model has been established to predict the heat transfer coefficient of an individual CNT in gas environment. The heat dissipation around the CNT is governed by molecular collisions, and outside the collision layer, the heat conduction is dominant. At nanoscales, the natural convection can be neglected. In order to describe the intermolecular collisions around the CNT quantitatively, a correction factor 1/24 is introduced and agreeswellwith the experimental observation. The prediction of the present model is in good agreement with our experimental results in free molecular regime. Further, a maximum heat transfer coefficient occurs at a critical diameter of several nanometers, providing guidelines on the practical design of CNT-based heat spreaders.
Carbon Nanotube-Based Super Nanotubes: Tunable Thermal Conductivity in Three Dimensions

Abstract:Advances in nanomaterials/nanostructures offer the possibility of fabricating multifunctional materials for use in engineering applications. Carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanostructures are a representative building block for these multifunctional materials. Based on a series of in silico studies, we investigated the possibility of tuning the thermal conductivity of a three-dimensional CNT-based nanostructure: a single-walled CNT-based super-nanotube. The thermal conductivity of the super-nanotubes was shown to vary with different connecting carbon rings and super-nanotubes with longer constituent single-walled CNTs and larger diameters had a smaller thermal conductivity. The inverse of the thermal conductivity of the super-nanotubes showed a good linear relationship with the inverse of the length. The thermal conductivity was approximately proportional to the inverse of the temperature, but was insensitive to the axial strain as a result of the Poisson ratio. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the thermal conductivity of the super-nanotubes and will guide their future design/fabrication and engineering applications.

Abstract:Based on the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the thermal conductivities of a novel ultra-thin one-dimensional carbon nanomaterial - diamond nanothread (DNT). Unlike single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT), the existence of the Stone-Wales transformations in DNT endows it with richer thermal transport characteristics. There is a transition from wave-dominated to particle-dominated transport region, which depends on the length of poly-benzene rings. However, independent of the transport region, strong length dependence in thermal conductivity is observed in DNTs with different lengths of poly-benzene ring. The distinctive SW characteristic in DNT provides more degrees of freedom to tune the thermal conductivity not found in the homogeneous structure of CNT. Therefore, DNT is an ideal platform to investigate various thermal transport mechanisms at the nanoscale. Its high tunability raises the potential to design DNTs for different applications, such as thermal connection and temperature management.

Abstract:Based on polymer perfusion behaviour inside carbon nanotube (CNT) networks, the thermal transport performances of the CNT networks with various extents of polymer intercalation are studied by dividing them into two parts: thermal transport at the tube contact interfaces of CNT junctions and along the tube axis. The thermal transport performance at the tube contact interfaces of CNT junctions is similar to that in the transverse direction of graphene layers. Hence, to obtain a fundamental understanding of thermal transport performance at the tube contact interfaces, thermal conductance along the z-axis direction of graphene layers with and without polymer intercalation is investigated using a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. Thermal conductivity along the tube axis direction of the polymer wrapped CNT is also calculated using the same method. The simulation results show that a low extent of polymer aggregation at the tube contact interfaces can significantly improve the interfacial thermal conductance. However, when the polymer content at the tube contact interfaces exceeds a critical fraction, the interfacial thermal conductance is decreased. The results also indicate that the polymer molecules wrapping around the CNT walls have a strong negative influence on the bulk thermal conductivity of the CNT along its axis direction.

Abstract:We reported the thermal conductivity of the two-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT)-based architecture, which can be constructed through welding of single-wall CNTs by electron beam. Using large-scale nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, the thermal conductivity is found to vary with different junction types due to their different phonon scatterings at the junction. The strong length and strain dependence of the thermal conductivity suggests an effective avenue to tune the thermal transport properties of the CNT-based architecture, benefiting the design of nanoscale thermal rectifiers or phonon engineering. Abstract:In this study, the thermal conductivities of three types of CNTs-nanofluids with volume concentration from 0.05 to 0.48 vol% are investigated at the temperatures of 10-60 degrees C by experiments. The experimental results show that the thermal conductivities of CNTs-nanofluids are strongly dependent on the aspect ratio, concentration and temperature. The existent models for predicting thermal conductivity of CNT-nanofluid are compared with the experimental data. The results show that predictive values with those models underestimate or overestimate the thermal conductivity in terms of the experimental results. A novel thermal conductivity predictive model is proposed with experimental data. In the proposed model, the straightness ratio of the CNTs is modified by considering two factors of the concentration and length of CNTs, and temperature effect is also introduced. The predictive results indicate that the proposed model agrees with all the experimental data points within a +/- 5% error band. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The heat transfer coefficients of several individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were measured using a micro-Raman spectroscopy technique in an atmosphere environment. A 514 nm laser was focused in the middle of a suspended SWCNT and the local temperature rise was measured by monitoring the downshifts of the G-band frequency. The heat transfer coefficient can be extracted from the measured midpoint temperature rise. Because there are no temperature drops at the ends of SWCNTs, the thermal contact resistance can be ignored. A detailed kinetic model was developed to predict the heat transfer coefficient quantitatively from the free molecular regime to the continuum regime. The theoretical prediction agrees well with the experimental data. Based on the present model, a maximum heat transfer coefficient occurs in the transition regime at a diameter of several nanometers, which is the competition result of the thermal resistances of the noncontinuum layer and continuum layer. The maximum value agrees with the prediction of kinetic theory of gases. The noncontact Raman measurement technique and prediction model will benefit the thermal design of carbon nanotube-based heat spreaders.

Abstract:In this paper, non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the interfacial heat exchange capacity of one-dimensional carbon nanotube nested structures. When the radius of the CNT substrate is increased from 1.356 to 2.712 nm, the ITC has a great enhancement from 1.340 to 2.949 nw/k. After this, we investigate the effects of overlap length, CNT length, and van der Waals interaction strength on the thermal resistance of the interface between carbon nanotubes. Firstly, we found that the nesting depth can significantly increase the ITC, and the increase in ITC is more obvious at an overlap length of 40 Å than at 30 Å. After this, the effect of length on the interfacial thermal conductivity is investigated, and the interfacial thermal conductivity is enhanced by 33.8% when the length is increased to 30 nm. Finally, the effect of van der Waals interaction strength was investigated, and the ITC increased from 1.60 nW/K to 2.71 nW/K when the scale factor was increased from 1 to 2.

Abstract:The excellent thermal performance of carbon nanotube (CNT) has been noticed long ago and attracted much attention. In the experiments, the electrical and thermal contact resistances remain the unsolved key problems causing undesirable measurement uncertainty. Recently, a micro-Raman spectroscopy technique has been applied to perform non-contact measurement for individual CNT, thus the contact resistances during the measurement process can be avoided. In this method, the temperature rise of CNT is a function of laser absorption probability and thermal properties, these parameters are coupled together. In this work, the thermal conductivity and optical absorption of the same CNT sample are decoupled and determined simultaneously. The thermal conductivity is obtained by measuring the temperature rise caused by a direct current heating, where the laser heating effect can be eliminated. Then the optical absorption is obtained by solving the heat transfer equation considering the thermal conductivity as a known parameter. The CNT sample is 24.8 mu m in length and 3 nm in diameter. The measured thermal conductivity is 2630 Wm(-1)K(-1) and the optical absorption is 0.194%. The heat transfer coefficient is evaluated using a kinetic two-layer model, which has been proven by the previous experiment. Because the length of CNT is much larger than the size of the focused laser spot, the experimental result is insensitive to the contact resistances at the ends of CNT.
Efficient natural-convective heat transfer properties of carbon nanotube sheets and their roles on the thermal dissipation.

Abstract:In this work, we report our studies related to the natural-convective heat transfer properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets. We theoretically derived the formulas and experimentally measured the natural-convective heat transfer coefficients (H) via electrical heating method. The H values of the CNT sheets containing different layers (1, 2, 3, and 1000) were measured. We found that the single-layer CNT sheet had a unique ability on heat dissipation because of its great H. The H value of the single-layer CNT sheet was 69 W/(m(2) K) which was about twice of aluminum foil in the same environment. As the layers increased, the H values dropped quickly to the same with that of aluminum foil. We also discussed its roles on thermal dissipation, and the results indicated that the convection was a significant way of dissipation when the CNT sheets were applied on macroscales. These results may give us a new guideline to design devices based on the CNT sheets.

Abstract:The mechanical and thermal properties of a hybrid nanotube consisting of a coaxial carbon nanotube (CNT) inside a graphyne nanotube (GNT), i.e., CNT@GNT, are investigated in this paper by using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the mechanical properties of CNT@GNT under uniaxial tension depend on the nanotube chirality of its components. Specifically, the Young's modulus of the CNT@GNT structure with an inner zigzag CNT is larger than that of its counterpart with an armchair CNT, while CNT@GNT with an armchair CNT and a zigzag GNT is found to possess the largest tensile strength and fracture strain. In addition, a unique fracture behavior of the successive rupture of its two components is observed in CNT@GNT. The thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT is found to be almost independent of the nanotube chirality of its components but increases as the length and diameter of the CNT@GNT increase. Moreover, strain engineering is shown as an effective avenue to modulate the thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT, which can be enhanced by tension but reduced by compression. The analysis of the phonon spectrum and spectral energy density demonstrates that this strain effect originates from changes of the phonon group velocity and phonon scattering in the strained CNT@GNT.

Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.
Thermal Transport in One-Dimensional Van Der Waals Heterostructures: Effects of Coating Layers on the Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive investigation on the thermal transport in one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) coating can increase the thermal conductance of inner carbon nanotube (CNT) base by 36%, while the molybdenum disulfide nanotube (MSNT) coating can reduce the thermal conductance by 47%. The different effects of BNNT and MSNT coatings on the thermal transport behaviors of 1D vdW heterostructures are explained by the competition mechanism between improved heat flux and increased temperature gradient in 1D vdW heterostructures. By taking CNT@BNNT@MSNT as an example, thermal transport in 1D vdW heterostructures containing three layers is also investigated. It is found that the coaxial BNNT-MSNT coating can significantly reduce the thermal conductance of inner CNT base by 61%, which is even larger than that of an individual MSNT coating. This unexpected reduction in thermal conductance of CNT@BNNT@MSNT can be explained by the suppression of heat flux arising from the possible compression effect, since BNNT-MSNT coating in CNT@BNNT@MSNT can more significantly suppress the vibration of inner CNT when compared to the individual MSNT coating in CNT@MSNT. In addition to the in-plane thermal transport, the interfacial thermal conductance between inner and outer nanotubes in 1D vdW heterostructures is also examined to provide a quantitative understanding of the thermal transport behaviors of1D vdW heterostructures. This work is expected to provide molecular insights into tailoring the heat transport in carbon base 1D vdW heterostructures and thus facilitate their broader applications as thermal interface materials.
Interfacial Thermal Conductance of Buckling Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Bond transition of sp2 to sp3 in carbon nanotube can be realized through bending operation at buckling location, which affects the electronic, mechanical and thermal properties of buckled carbon nanotube. In this work, thermal properties of buckled tri-walled carbon nanotube with sp3 bonds are explored using molecular dynamics. Our results reveal that interfacial thermal conductance at buckling location is sensitive to the bending angle, which decreases exponentially with increasing bending angle until 90 degree because of increasing the number of interlayer sp3 bonds. When the bending angle is beyond 90 degree, there are sp3 bonds formed on the outer-tube walls which provide new paths for heat transfer. The insight of mechanism of thermal properties is analyzed by determining atomic micro-heat flux scattering. Our findings provide a flexible and applicable method to design thermal management device. This unusual phenomenon is explained by the micro-heat flux migration and stress distributions.

Abstract:Modelling heat transfer of carbon nanotubes is important for the thermal management of nanotube-based composites and nanoelectronic device. By using a finite element method for three-dimensional anisotropic heat transfer, we have simulated the heat conduction and temperature variations of a single nanotube, a nanotube array and a part of nanotube-based composite surface with heat generation. The thermal conductivity used is obtained from the upscaled value from the molecular simulations or experiments. Simulations show that nanotube arrays have unique cooling characteristics due to its anisotropic thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are superb materials for nanoscale thermal management and phononic devices applications, due to their extremely high thermal conductivity (3000-6600 W/mK) and quasi-one-dimensional geometry. However, the presence of interfaces between individual carbon nanotubes as found widely in nanocomposites, nanoelectronics, and nanodevices severely limits their performance for larger scale applications. Solving this issue requires a deep understanding of the heat transfer mechanism at this nanoscale interface between low-dimensional structures, where conventional models developed for interfaces in bulk materials do not apply. Here we address this challenge through a bottom-up approach based on atomistic simulations. We demonstrate that the huge thermal resistance of carbon nanotube junctions can be significantly improved through modifying the molecular structure at the interface to enhance both the matching of phonon spectra and phonon mode coupling. Specifically, two approaches based on polymerwrapping and metal coatings are investigated here and have shown to improve both the structural stability and interfacial thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube junctions. By properly designing the interface molecular structure between individual carbon nanotubes, significant performance gains up to a factor of 4 can be achieved. These results pave the way for future designs of thermal management networks and phononic devices with thermally transparent and structurally stable interfaces.
Nanoscale Heat Transport of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Bundles for Thermal Management Applications

Abstract:Electronic devices continue to shrink in size while increasing in performance, making excess heat dissipation challenging. Traditional thermal interface materials (TIMs) such as thermal grease and pads face limitations in thermal conductivity and stability, particularly as devices scale down. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as promising candidates for TIMs because of their exceptional thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. However, the thermal conductivity of CNT films decreases when integrated into devices due to defects and bundling effects. This study employs a novel cross-sectional approach combining high-vacuum scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) with beam-exit cross-sectional polishing (BEXP) to investigate the nanoscale morphology and thermal properties of vertically aligned CNT bundles at low and room temperatures. Using appropriate thermal transport models, we extracted effective thermal conductivities of the vertically aligned nanotubes and obtained 4 W m-1 K-1 at 200 K and 37 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K. Additionally, non-negligible lateral thermal conductance between CNT bundles suggests more complex heat transfer mechanisms in these structures. These findings provide unique insights into nanoscale thermal transport in CNT bundles, which is crucial for optimizing novel thermal management strategies.
Non-Fourier Heat Conduction in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Fourier’s law is a phenomenological law to describe the heat transfer process. Although it has been widely used in a variety of engineering application areas, it is still questionable to reveal the physical essence of heat transfer. In order to describe the heat transfer phenomena universally, Guo has developed a general heat conduction law based on the concept of thermomass, which is defined as the equivalent mass of phonon gas in dielectrics according to Einstein’s mass-energy relation. The general law degenerates into Fourier’s law when the thermal inertia is neglected as the heat flux is not very high. The heat flux in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may be as high as 1012 W/m2. In this case Fourier’s law no longer holds. However, what is estimated through the ratio of the heat flux to the temperature gradient by MD simulations or experiments is only the apparent thermal conductivity (ATC); which is smaller than the intrinsic thermal conductivity (ITC). The existing experimental data of single-walled CNTs under the high-bias current flows are applied to study the non-Fourier heat conduction under the ultra-high heat flux conditions. The results show that ITC and ATC are almost equal under the low heat flux conditions when the thermal inertia is negligible, while the difference between ITC and ATC becomes more notable as the heat flux increases or the temperature drops.
Heat Transfer in Carbon-Nanotube Dispersions: A Simulation Study of the Role of Nanotube Morphology and Connectivity

Abstract:Simulation of the behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can become a very challenging task considering their complicated shape and large aspect ratio. This study aims to elucidate the role of CNT shape, length, and connectivity during heat transfer in CNT dispersions through a three-dimensional (3D) simulator. Three characteristic shapes for the CNTs are considered, namely, straight, moderately curved, and strongly curved. The results reveal that the commonly used assumption of viewing CNTs as straight cylinders leads to significant overestimation of the overall medium conductivity. The CNT length has an important effect on the nanofluid conductivity for all types of CNT shapes considered here. In addition, use of CNTs with higher conductivity than a certain value appears to have no further beneficial effect, thus relaxing the need for extremely pure or single-wall CNTs. On the contrary, the conductivity remains a strong function of the CNT concentration and may be even increased upon organization of CNTs into loose clusters. The overall approach and concept can be extended to CNT composites in a straightforward manner.
