Abstract:Direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an economically competitive and environmentally friendly industrial scheme used to produce propylene. Beyond the traditional Pt or Cr oxide catalyst, in this study, we focus on 3N-coordinated transition-metal single-atom catalysts confined within graphene (TM1-N3/C) for PDH due to their open coordination configuration with tunable capability for C–H activation. A total of 29 TM1-N3/C catalysts, covering the majority of 3d–5d transition metals, are systematically screened by first-principles mechanistic exploration and microkinetic modeling to assess their stability, activity, and selectivity; particularly, we considered the possible side reactions and the coverage effect of dominant intermediate for the realistic industrial application. Only six TM1-N3/C catalysts containing early TMs (TM = Sc, Ti, Y, Zr, La, Hf) are found to be stable at the working conditions of ∼900 K, owing to the unsaturation of the 3N-coordinated single-atom structure. A volcano-type activity trend is obtained with the adsorption energy of propylene being the key descriptor, which shows that TM1-N3/C generally exhibit higher activities than conventional catalysts. This is attributed to the openness of TM1-N3/C that makes the TM1 intrinsically more active and the transition states or intermediates highly mobile (with larger than the expected entropy retained) at 900 K. Moreover, the side reactions and the coverage effect are also demonstrated to be prominent. After a thorough consideration of all of the influencing factors, we find that TM1-N3/C (TM = Ti, Zr, Hf) could be promising catalysts for practical applications with superior activities compared to the traditional Pt(111) catalyst. This study provides a comprehensive picture for the theoretical screening of TM1-N3/C for PDH and may pave the way for the use of low-coordination single-atom catalysts to enhance PDH in experiments.

Abstract:Metal doped ZSM-5 catalyst has attracted much attention due to its unique catalytic activity for C–H bond activation. In this work, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic analysis, we prospectively explored the catalytic activity of 12 kinds of transition metals (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, W, Pt, Au) single-atom-doped ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts in the catalytic cracking of naphtha. The results show that there is a strong electronic interaction between metal atom and ZSM-5 skeleton. This induced stable structure could improve the adsorption ability of hydrocarbon, thus promoting the activation of C–H bond and the cracking of carbenium ion. Moreover, C and H binding energy were identified as descriptors in describing catalytic activity via good scaling relations. The turnover frequency volcano diagram shows that the Ag and Cu doped ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst is close to the best choice. In addition, Pd and Mo are potential metal choices with good selectivity through selectivity analysis. This work has important guiding significance for understanding the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) mechanism and designing high-efficiency cracking catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic behavior of M1-Cr2O3 (M = Mn-Cu, Ru-Ag, and Os-Au) in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been studied by employing microkinetic modeling combined with results from periodic DFT + U calculations. Calculated results indicate that most of the single atoms concerned can be stably present on the Cr2O3 surface. The adsorption energy calculations and Bader charge analysis demonstrate that the acidity of the O sites adjacent to the M sites would be enhanced upon doping, which in turn strengthens the atomic H adsorption and the co adsorption of various PDH species. The surface H formation energy is identified as the reactivity descriptor for PDH over the M1-Cr2O3 catalysts, and a volcano curve of the PDH activity is obtained. By calculating the difference between the propylene dehydrogenation and desorption barriers, it is found that some M1-Cr2O3 catalysts show improved selectivity towards propylene, as compared to Cr2O3. Comparison between the formation barriers of H-2 and H2O reveals that single-atom doping has no apparent negative effect on the catalytic stability of the Cr2O3 surface. The Cu1-Cr(2)O(3 )catalyst is finally identified as the most promising catalyst for PDH among the 13 M-1-Cr2O3 catalyst candidates, considering the catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and cost.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has shown great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene. However, industrial Pt- and Cr-based catalysts are either costly or toxic. The development of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts is highly desirable. Herein, we synthesized a series of SiO 2 -supported ZnO catalysts (ZnO/SiO 2 ) from atomic dispersion to a few nanometers and to continuous films using atomic layer deposition. In the PDH reaction, we showed that the mass specific rates and propylene selectivity both exhibited a volcano relation with the size of ZnO, where a ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst with a size of approximately 4.8 nm had the maximum PDH activity and propylene selectivity of 95% along with a good long-term stability for at least 10 h. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 revealed that the amount of oxygen vacancies and acidity sites in ZnO had the same trend with the PDH activity on the ZnO size and reached the maximum on the 4.8 nm-sized ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst. This result suggests that unsaturated Zn cations accompanied by oxygen vacancies are the active sites for the activation of C-H bonds in propane.

Abstract:By using a descriptor-based microkinetic analysis combined with results from density functional theory calculations over eight transition-metal (including Ni, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au) terrace and stepped surfaces, intermetallic compounds have been screened to search for inexpensive and environmentally friendly propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance. Based on the scaling relations, the formation energies of ethyl on terrace and methylidyne on stepped surfaces are identified as two descriptors to represent the energetics of other reaction intermediates and transition sates. The derived PDH activity and propylene selectivity volcano curves not only provide a rational interpretation of the previously experimentally reported catalyst candidates, but also predict several unexpected binary combinations by screening 1482 A(3)B(1) and 741 A(1)B(1) intermetallic compounds. The non-precious Fe3Ga1 is then synthesized and evaluated. Its improved propylene selectivity and catalytic stability with respect to those of the Pt catalyst validates the theoretical predictions experimentally. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Regulation of Active ZnO Species on Si‐based Supports with Diverse Textural Properties for Efficient Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propylene is deemed as a kind of key raw materials with significant value in industrial production. Highly dispersed Zn species are served as active sites in catalyzing propane dehydrogenation reaction (PDH). More importantly, the morphology and textural properties of Si‐based support exert the great influence on the formation of active Zn species. Herein, active Zn species were dispersed on macroporous commercial SiO2, mesoporous siliceous materials (SBA‐15, MCF, DMSN, KIT‐6), and microporous silicalite‐1 (S‐1), respectively. Characterization result indicated that the dispersed active ZnO species were prone to be formed on S‐1, which could be attributed to the confinement effect of micropores in S‐1 and the abundant Si‐OH groups interacted with Zn2+ species. As a result, the optimal ZnOA/S‐1 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity (propane conversion of 40.4%, propylene selectivity of 96.0%, 550 oC, WHSV=0.47 h‐1) during PDH process. Furthermore, the relatively considerable performance of ZnOA/S‐1 catalysts could help to offer a guidance on the design of efficient and low‐cost catalysts for PDH reaction.

Abstract:ConspectusZinc oxide (ZnO) is a multipurpose material and finds its applications in various fields such as rubber manufacturing, medicine, food additives, electronics, etc. It has also been intensively studied in photocatalysis due to its wide band gap and environmental compatibility. Recently, heterogeneous catalysts with supported ZnOx species have attracted more and more attention for the dehydrogenation of propane (PDH) and isobutane (iBDH) present in shale/natural gas. The olefins formed in these reactions are key building blocks of the chemical industry. These reactions are also of academic importance for understanding the fundamentals of the selective activation of C-H bonds. Differently structured ZnOx species supported on zeolites, SiO2, and Al2O3 have been reported to be active for nonoxidative dehydrogenation reactions. However, the structure-activity-selectivity relationships for these catalysts remain elusive. The main difficulty stems from the preparation of catalysts containing only one kind of well-defined ZnOx species.In this Account, we describe the studies on PDH and iBDH over differently structured ZnOx species and highlight our approaches to develop catalysts with controllable ZnOx speciation relevant to their performance. Several methods, including (i) the in situ reaction of gas-phase metallic Zn atoms with OH groups on the surface of supports, (ii) one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, and (iii) impregnation/anchoring methods, have been developed/used for the tailored preparation of supported ZnOx species. The first method allows precise control of the molecular structure of ZnOx through the nature of the defective OH groups on the supports. Using this method, a series of ZnOx species ranging from isolated, binuclear to nanosized ZnOx have been successfully generated on different SiO2-based or ZrO2-based supports as demonstrated by complementary ex/in situ characterization techniques. Based on kinetic studies and detailed characterization results, the intrinsic activity (Zn-related turnover frequency) of ZnOx was found to depend on its speciation. It increases with an increasing number of Zn atoms in a ZnmOn cluster from 1 to a few atoms (less than 10) and then decreases strongly for ZnOx nanoparticles. The latter promote the formation of undesired C1-C2 hydrocarbons and coke, resulting in lower propene selectivity in comparison with the catalysts containing only ZnOx species ranging from isolated to subnanometer ZnmOn clusters. In addition, the strategy for improving the thermal stability of ZnOx species and the consequences of mass-transport limitations for DH reactions were also elucidated. The results obtained allowed us to establish the fundamentals for the targeted preparation of well-structured ZnOx species and the relationships between their structures and the DH performance. This knowledge may inspire further studies in the field of C-H bond activation and other reactions, in which ZnOx species act as catalytically active sites or promoters, such as the dehydroaromatization of light alkanes and the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol.
Tailoring Catalytic Properties of V2O3 to Propane Dehydrogenation Through Single-Atom Doping: A DFT Study

Abstract:Vanadium-oxide-based catalysts have recently been found very promising for the catalytic dehydrogenation of propane. In this work, self-consistent density functional theory calculations have been performed to examine how the electronic structure of the V2O3(0001) surface is modified by single-atom doping and how the catalytic properties can be tailored to propane dehydrogenation. The structural stability of single-atom-doped V2O3(0001) surfaces is assessed by comparing the adsorption energies of single atoms with the cohesive energies of bulk metals. A weak Lewis acid-base interaction is found to occur on the pristine surface, which can be strengthened and weakened by substitution of single atoms for V and O, respectively. On these two types of oxide surfaces, single atoms act as promoters and active sites. The first dehydrogenation step is identified as the rate-limiting step by microkinetic analysis. On all the single-atom-doped surfaces, the activation energy for water formation is higher than that for hydrogen recombination, implying that reduction of the oxide surfaces is difficult to take place during the course of the reaction. If a compromise between the catalytic activity and catalyst selectivity is made, Mn-1-V2O3 is suggested to be a good candidate as the catalyst for propane dehydrogenation.
Effect of Diffusion Constraints and ZnOx Speciation on Nonoxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane and Isobutane over ZnO-Containing Catalysts

Abstract:Heterogeneously catalyzed gas-solid-phase reactions generally suffered from diffusion limitations in large-scale processes or in academic studies when zeolites were used as catalysts or supports. Here, we elucidated the effects of diffusion of reactants/products in nonoxidative propane (PDH) and isobutane dehydrogenation (iBDH) reactions on the performance of catalysts possessing differently structured ZnOx species on (S-1), dealuminated beta (deAl beta), and ZrO2. The catalysts were prepared through physically mixing ZnO and the support. Force-field molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the effectiveness factor eta is larger than 0.99 in the PDH reaction over all catalysts and in the iBDH reaction over the ZnO-deAl beta catalyst, thus suggesting that mass transport limitations do not play any significant role. However, the iBDH reaction over S-1-based catalysts suffers from some diffusion limitations (0.35 < eta < 0.9). Such conditions are favorable for cracking reactions responsible for isobutene selectivity loss. To compare intrinsic catalyst activity in the PDH and iBDH reactions over the ZnOx/S-1 catalyst, molecular-level insights into individual reaction pathways were derived from density functional theory calculations. The nature of active ZnOx sites was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and was established to depend on the kind of support material. Binuclear ZnOx species are formed inside small S-1 pores or on the surface of ZrO2, while three-dimensional multinuclear ZnOx clusters are generated in the beta zeolite with larger pores. The latter show higher Zn-related activity in the PDH reaction under conditions free of any diffusion constraints. The developed ZnO-deAl beta showed the space-time yield of propene or isobutene formation of 2 kgC3H6 kgcat-1 h-1 or 6.3 kgi-C4H8 kgcat -1 h-1 at 550 degrees C and about 70-80% equilibrium alkane conversion with an olefin selectivity of about 90%. The activity values are higher than those reported for the state-of-the-art non-noble metal oxide catalysts tested at the same or even higher temperatures.

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations have been performed to examine the different catalytic behaviors of alpha-Cr2O3 and ZnO in propane dehydrogenation. On ZnO(10 (1) over bar0), adsorption of a Lewis acid at the metal site can be strengthened with the coadsorption of a Lewis base at an adjacent oxygen site. In contrast, this Lewis acid-base interaction does not occur on Cr2O3(0001) because the Cr ions can exist in a lower oxidation state and thus withdraw electrons from the base, which limits the ability of the oxide to transfer electrons to the acid. Both creating oxygen vacancy and doping single Pt atom on ZnO(10 (1) over bar0) may give rise to a weaker acid-base interaction and hence to a change in the active site. Microkinetic analysis indicates formation of oxygen vacancy has a positive and negative effect on the reactivity of alpha-Cr2O3 and ZnO, respectively, whereas doping a Pt single atom invariably promotes the dehydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:Alumina is among the most widely used supports in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, DFT calculations and microkinetic analysis have been combined to examine the catalytic behaviors of theta- and gamma-Al2O3-supported Pt single atom catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH). Calculated results indicate oxygen vacancies may weaken the Lewis acid-base interactions between a pair of coadsorbed amphoteric species at the Al-O sites. Although the coadsorption cannot be strengthened at the Pt-O sites, the reaction intermediates involved are bound most tightly at the Pt sites. A concerted mechanism in which two C-H bonds are simultaneously activated is proposed on Pt-doped theta-Al2O3, which dominates the stepwise mechanism and gives rise to a high activity. In contrast, PDH cannot take place along the concerned pathway on Pt-doped gamma-Al2O3 because of the large surface distortion induced. These results provide a rational interpretation of the superior PDH performance of the theta-Al2O3-supported Pt catalyst

Abstract:Recently, the ZrO2-based catalysts for PDH exhibited high activity owing to the formation of oxygen vacancy and coordinatively unsaturated Zr (Zrcu) sites. However, industrial C3H8 raw gases typically contain trace amounts of oxygen at 10-1000 ppm, which can significantly decrease the PDH activity of nano-sized ZrO2 catalyst, because that oxygen vacancy can be filled by the O2 molecules rapidly, while the rate of lattice oxygen consumption is relatively slow. Here, highly dispersed NiOx species loading on ZrO2 significantly increased C3H6 formation rate (up to 6.6 times) and decreased the activation energy. The strong interaction between NiOx species and ZrO2 enhances the ability of ZrO2 to release its lattice oxygen, and increases the concentration of oxygen vacancy and unsaturated Zr-O acid-base pairs for PDH. This strategy can expand to other metal oxides interacted with ZrO2 to eliminate the inhibiting effect of trace oxygen, such as GaOx, CoOx, CrOx, LaOx, and InOx.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Compared with high-priced Platinum and toxic Chromium oxide, ZnO based catalysts attract wide attention due to its low-cost and environment-friendly character. The catalyst with 5 wt% Zn exhibited the best propane yield with propane conversion reaching 49% and propylene selectivity around 90% at a space velocity of 5000 ml·g -1 ·h -1 . Characterization with N 2 adsorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, NH 3 -TPD, UV–vis, XPS, 29 Si MAS NMR, FT-IR, Py-IR and TGA reveal that the high activity and stability can be attributed to the dispersed ZnO species due to the interaction between silanol nests of silicalite-1 support and ZnO species. This study may open a promising way for development of highly efficient PDH catalysts.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a crucial approach for propylene production. However, commonly used CrOx-based catalysts have issues including easy sintering at elevated reaction temperatures and relying on high acidity supports. In this work, we develop a strategy, to strongly anchor and isolate active sites against their commonly observed aggregation during reactions, by taking advantage of the net trap effect in chromate intercalated Zn-Cr layered hydroxides as precursors. Furthermore, the intercalated chromate overcomes the collapse of traditional layered hydroxides during their transformation to metal oxide, thus exposing more available active sites. A joint fine modulation including crystal structure, surface acidity, specific surface area, and active sites dispersion is performed on the final mixed metal oxides for propane dehydrogenation. As a result, Zn1Cr2-CrO42--MMO delivers attractive propane conversion (~27%) and propylene selectivity (>90%) as compared to other non-noble-metal-based catalysts.
Highly Stable Propane Dehydrogenation on a Self‐supporting Single‐component Zn2SiO4 Catalyst

Abstract:Current industrial propane dehydrogenation (PDH) processes predominantly use either toxic Cr-based or expensive Pt-based catalysts, necessitating urgent exploration for alternatives. Herein, we present Zn2SiO4, an easily prepared, cost-effective material, as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PDH. Uniquely, Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals do not require dispersion on support materials, commonly needed for catalytic active oxide clusters, but function as a self-supporting catalyst instead. During the reaction's induction period, surface Zn species on the Zn2SiO4 crystal reduce to coordinately unsaturated ZnOx single sites, serving as highly active catalytic centers. The Zn2SiO4 catalyst demonstrates a stable performance over 200 hours of PDH operation at 550 °C. We further find that introducing a minuscule amount of CO2 into the propane feed significantly extends the catalyst lifespan to over 2000 hours. This enhancement arises from the special role of CO2 in facilitating the removal of strongly adsorbed H*, preventing the complete reduction of ZnOx. After prolonged reaction, the activity of Zn2SiO4 can be fully restored by etching the surface layer to expose fresh Zn species, available throughout the crystals. The combination of CO2 introduction and catalytic site regeneration strategies is expected to enable a year-long PDH operation using a single batch of Zn2SiO4 catalyst.

Abstract:Dry methane reforming (DMR) is a promising technique aiming at converting two major greenhouse gases into useful chemical feedstocks. A major challenge in the commercialization of this process is to develop a suitable catalyst with long-term stability, strong catalytic activity, and low cost. In this work, a microkinetic analysis coupled with a descriptor-based approach is conducted to study the trend in the catalytic activity across eight transition metals, where the formation energies of adsorbed C and O are identified as two reactivity descriptors. The catalytic properties of the close-packed (111) and stepped (211) surfaces are compared to show the structure sensitivity of the DMR reaction. The resultant activity map with adsorbate–adsorbate interactions taken into consideration shows that Rh, Ir, and Ni are among the most active elemental metals for this reaction. Then, 1482 A3B1 and 741 A1B1 alloys that contain 39 elements have been screened for the DMR catalyst based on their anticarbonization and antioxidation ability, catalytic activity, and cost, in which an unsupervised machine learning technique is employed to identify the thermodynamically stable alloys upon adsorption and thus to accelerate the screening process. Abstract:Volcano curves have proven to be particularly useful in new catalyst design in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. On the other hand, the further enhancement of the performance of the optimal catalyst for a given reaction is inherently limited by the Sabatier principle. In this work, microkinetic analysis has been carried out to examine the adsorption and catalytic behaviors of single-atom-doped Ga2O3 catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH), which shows that the volcano-shaped activity plot can be broken through by Lewis acid-base interactions, making it possible to achieve better catalytic performance than that of the most active catalyst lying near the summit of the volcano. The reasoning behind this finding is that the presence of the Lewis acid-base interaction over metal-oxide surfaces may strengthen the coadsorption of a pair of amphoteric species at the M-O site, resulting in distinctly different chemisorption energy and transition state energy scaling relations. As a result, the formation energies of H&H coadsorption at the M-O site and H adsorption on top of O are identified as two different reactivity descriptors in the presence and absence of the Lewis acid-base interaction, respectively, with the resulting activity plots exhibiting a straight-line and a volcano-curve pattern. Further experiments verify that the theoretically predicted catalyst candidate Ir-1-Ga2O3 is more effective than the previously reported trace-Pt-promoted Ga2O3 catalyst, which opens up a new way to the rational design of metal-oxide catalysts for the PDH process.
