Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has shown great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene. However, industrial Pt- and Cr-based catalysts are either costly or toxic. The development of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts is highly desirable. Herein, we synthesized a series of SiO 2 -supported ZnO catalysts (ZnO/SiO 2 ) from atomic dispersion to a few nanometers and to continuous films using atomic layer deposition. In the PDH reaction, we showed that the mass specific rates and propylene selectivity both exhibited a volcano relation with the size of ZnO, where a ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst with a size of approximately 4.8 nm had the maximum PDH activity and propylene selectivity of 95% along with a good long-term stability for at least 10 h. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 revealed that the amount of oxygen vacancies and acidity sites in ZnO had the same trend with the PDH activity on the ZnO size and reached the maximum on the 4.8 nm-sized ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst. This result suggests that unsaturated Zn cations accompanied by oxygen vacancies are the active sites for the activation of C-H bonds in propane.

Abstract:Propylene is deemed as a kind of key raw materials with significant value in industrial production. Highly dispersed Zn species are served as active sites in catalyzing propane dehydrogenation reaction (PDH). More importantly, the morphology and textural properties of Si‐based support exert the great influence on the formation of active Zn species. Herein, active Zn species were dispersed on macroporous commercial SiO2, mesoporous siliceous materials (SBA‐15, MCF, DMSN, KIT‐6), and microporous silicalite‐1 (S‐1), respectively. Characterization result indicated that the dispersed active ZnO species were prone to be formed on S‐1, which could be attributed to the confinement effect of micropores in S‐1 and the abundant Si‐OH groups interacted with Zn2+ species. As a result, the optimal ZnOA/S‐1 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity (propane conversion of 40.4%, propylene selectivity of 96.0%, 550 oC, WHSV=0.47 h‐1) during PDH process. Furthermore, the relatively considerable performance of ZnOA/S‐1 catalysts could help to offer a guidance on the design of efficient and low‐cost catalysts for PDH reaction.

Abstract:The direct catalytic dehydrogenation of propane to propene is an important route to enhance propene production. In the present experimentation the focus was to investigate the influence of incipient operating conditions, Si/Al ratio of zeolite support and effect of zinc doping on Pt-Sn/ZSM-5 catalyst performance. The catalysts were extensively investigated by reaction tests in a continuous plug-flow quartz micro-reactor. The experimental data shows that the manipulation of operating parameters significantly improves the reaction performance, while huge dynamicity is observed in product distribution. Reaction temperature, 600 °C is found to be most suitable, while increasing the weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), propene selectivity improves at the expense of lower conversion. The OPE was drawn to observe overall reaction network. It was found that the acidity of zeolitic support plays a more important role in achieving desired product selectivity than additional metallic content. Accordingly, the Si/Al ratio of the ZSM-5 zeolite the pro- pene selectivity was enhanced, leading to remarkable improvement in the total olefins selectivity which was remarkably improved owing to a suppression of secondary reactions. At Si/Al ratio 300, the selectivity of propene and total olefins becomes stable at 73% and 90% respectively. The doping of Zn on Pt-Sn/ZSM-5 improves only propene selectivity, but is severely affected by quick deactivation.
Effect of Support Composition on Catalytic Performance of Ptsn/Zsm-5 Catalyst for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:The effect of ZSM-5 composition on catalytic performance of the supported PtSn/ZSM-5 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation was studied using a microreactor combined with infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, thermogravimetry, H-2 chemisorption, and temperature-programmed reduction. The results showed that the ZSM-5 composition exerted great influence on the catalytic, performance of PtSn/ZSM-5 for propane dehydrogenation. With the increase of SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio in the ZSM-5 support, the numbers of both total and stronger acidic sites decreased. When the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio in the ZSM-5 support increased from 45 to 108, the catalytic activity increased, and the amount of coke formed on the catalyst surface decreased. When the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio in the ZSM-5 support was higher than 304, the interaction of Sri species with the ZSM-5 support became weaker, and the ratio of Sn-0 species in the catalyst increased after reduction in H-2, resulting in the decrease of H-2 uptake and catalytic activity of the PtSn/ZSM-5 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation.
Effect of Diffusion Constraints and ZnOx Speciation on Nonoxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane and Isobutane over ZnO-Containing Catalysts

Abstract:Heterogeneously catalyzed gas-solid-phase reactions generally suffered from diffusion limitations in large-scale processes or in academic studies when zeolites were used as catalysts or supports. Here, we elucidated the effects of diffusion of reactants/products in nonoxidative propane (PDH) and isobutane dehydrogenation (iBDH) reactions on the performance of catalysts possessing differently structured ZnOx species on (S-1), dealuminated beta (deAl beta), and ZrO2. The catalysts were prepared through physically mixing ZnO and the support. Force-field molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the effectiveness factor eta is larger than 0.99 in the PDH reaction over all catalysts and in the iBDH reaction over the ZnO-deAl beta catalyst, thus suggesting that mass transport limitations do not play any significant role. However, the iBDH reaction over S-1-based catalysts suffers from some diffusion limitations (0.35 < eta < 0.9). Such conditions are favorable for cracking reactions responsible for isobutene selectivity loss. To compare intrinsic catalyst activity in the PDH and iBDH reactions over the ZnOx/S-1 catalyst, molecular-level insights into individual reaction pathways were derived from density functional theory calculations. The nature of active ZnOx sites was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and was established to depend on the kind of support material. Binuclear ZnOx species are formed inside small S-1 pores or on the surface of ZrO2, while three-dimensional multinuclear ZnOx clusters are generated in the beta zeolite with larger pores. The latter show higher Zn-related activity in the PDH reaction under conditions free of any diffusion constraints. The developed ZnO-deAl beta showed the space-time yield of propene or isobutene formation of 2 kgC3H6 kgcat-1 h-1 or 6.3 kgi-C4H8 kgcat -1 h-1 at 550 degrees C and about 70-80% equilibrium alkane conversion with an olefin selectivity of about 90%. The activity values are higher than those reported for the state-of-the-art non-noble metal oxide catalysts tested at the same or even higher temperatures.

Abstract:Direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an attractive on-purpose strategy for propylene production. Compared with high-priced Platinum and toxic Chromium oxide, ZnO based catalysts attract wide attention due to its low-cost and environment-friendly character. Herein we report silicalite-1 supported ZnO catalysts for PDH reaction. They exhibited an excellent catalytic performance. The catalyst with 5 wt% Zn exhibited the best propane yield with propane conversion reaching 49% and propylene selectivity around 90% at a space velocity of 5000 ml·g -1 ·h -1 . Characterization with N 2 adsorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, NH 3 -TPD, UV–vis, XPS, 29 Si MAS NMR, FT-IR, Py-IR and TGA reveal that the high activity and stability can be attributed to the dispersed ZnO species due to the interaction between silanol nests of silicalite-1 support and ZnO species. This study may open a promising way for development of highly efficient PDH catalysts.

Abstract:Zn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts have been frequently investigated for propane dehydrogenation (PDH); however, the active site remains unresolved due to the complexity of the system. We employed in situ FTIR spectroscopy and a kinetics method to correlate the Zn speciation and PDH activity in Zn/H-ZSM-5 with two Si/Al ratios (15 and 39) and a range of Zn/Al ratios (0–1.7). Incremental additions of zinc show that Zn2+ sites are preferentially formed on H-ZSM-5 over a fraction of paired Al sites followed by [Zn-O-Zn]2+ and [ZnOH]+ sites and then ZnO x clusters. The [Zn-OH]+ and [Zn-O-Zn]2+ sites in H-ZSM-5 are more active and selective than isolated Zn2+ for PDH. [Zn-OH]+ species sublimate over time on stream, leading to catalyst deactivation, while [Zn-O-Zn]2+ species are stable even after high-temperature reduction (750 °C for 60 min). Three distinct Zn sites ([Zn-O-Zn]2+, Zn2+, and [ZnOH]+) show a similar propane reaction order (close to 1) and H2 reaction order (close to 0). Combined with the lack of Zn hydride when propane flows over the catalyst at 550 °C, it is concluded that propane adsorption and dissociation is a rate-determining step and H2 desorption is fast. This work indicates that the preparation of H-ZSM-5 with abundant Al pairs may be a strategy to form stable and selective Zn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. It is also highlighted that examining the effect of both metal/Al ratios and Al distribution of the zeolite is crucial in identifying the metal cations in metal–zeolite systems.

Abstract:Current industrial propane dehydrogenation (PDH) processes predominantly use either toxic Cr-based or expensive Pt-based catalysts, necessitating urgent exploration for alternatives. Herein, we present Zn2SiO4, an easily prepared, cost-effective material, as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PDH. Uniquely, Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals do not require dispersion on support materials, commonly needed for catalytic active oxide clusters, but function as a self-supporting catalyst instead. During the reaction's induction period, surface Zn species on the Zn2SiO4 crystal reduce to coordinately unsaturated ZnOx single sites, serving as highly active catalytic centers. The Zn2SiO4 catalyst demonstrates a stable performance over 200 hours of PDH operation at 550 °C. We further find that introducing a minuscule amount of CO2 into the propane feed significantly extends the catalyst lifespan to over 2000 hours. This enhancement arises from the special role of CO2 in facilitating the removal of strongly adsorbed H*, preventing the complete reduction of ZnOx. After prolonged reaction, the activity of Zn2SiO4 can be fully restored by etching the surface layer to expose fresh Zn species, available throughout the crystals. The combination of CO2 introduction and catalytic site regeneration strategies is expected to enable a year-long PDH operation using a single batch of Zn2SiO4 catalyst.

Size Dependence of Pt Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation: from Atomically Dispersed to Nanoparticles

Abstract:The structure-performance relationship is a critical fundamental issue in heterogeneous catalysis, and the size-dependent structure sensitivity of catalytic reactions has long been researched in catalysis. Yet it remains elusive for most of the reactions in a full-size range, from a single atom and subnanometer clusters to nanoparticles. Herein, we report complete size dependence of Pt catalysts used in propane dehydrogenation in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability due to coke formation. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the atomically dispersed Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was approximately 3-fold and 7-fold higher than the subnanometer-sized clusters and the nanoparticles, respectively. A canyon-shaped size dependence of the propene selectivity was observed with a bottom at about 2 nm of Pt particle size. The subnanometer-sized clusters have opposite size dependence of the propene selectivity compared to nanoparticles. Both atomically dispersed Pt and large Pt nanoparticles possess high propene selectivity. The atomically dispersed platinum centers with a positive charge dramatically enhanced the activity, weakened propylene adsorption, and prevented its deep dehydrogenation. Besides, the absence of multiple Pt-Pt sites effectively inhibited undesired side reactions (e.g., C-C cracking), thus improved propylene selectivity and stability. This work demonstrates the promising application of a supported atomically dispersed Pt catalyst for highly selective dehydrogenation of propane.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is one of the most effective technologies to produce propene. Non-noble zinc-based catalysts have paid increasing attention because of low cost and nontoxic, compared with industrial Pt and Cr-based catalysts. However, they often suffer from limited catalytic activity and poor stability. Here, we introduced moderate Ni into ZnO supported Silicalite-1 zeolite to increase catalytic activity and stability simultaneously. Zn2+ was the definite active site and NiZn alloy facilitated the sluggish H recombination into H2 via reverse spillover. Furthermore, the introduction of Ni increased Lewis acid strength caused by electron transfer from ZnO to NiZn alloy, contributing to improved stability. For resulted 0.5NiZn/S-1, propene formation rate was 0.18 mol C3H6·(g Zn)−1·h−1 at 550 °C, which was above 1.5 times higher than that over Zn/S-1 without Ni. Under stability test, the deactivation of 0.5NiZn/S-1 was 0.019 h−1, which was only 1/10 of that over Zn/S-1.

Abstract:Two series of binary In2O3/MOx (M=Al, Zr, Si) catalysts with low (3wt%) and high (10wt%) In2O3 loadings were prepared via an incipient wetness impregnation method. The support effect has been investigated in detail by testing the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction both in the presence and absence of CO2. Physico-chemical properties including surface composition, redox and acidic/basic properties of the supported In2O3 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, NH3 and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption, respectively. It was demonstrated that a higher population of the specific highly dispersed In2O3 species on support is favorable for propylene production, and the maximum propylene yield was achieved with the high-loading In2O3/Al2O3. Properties including high In2O3 dispersion and balanced acidic/basic properties, rendering synergism between dehydrogenation and reverse water gas shift, are essential for achieving high catalytic performance of PDH.

Abstract:Highly active and inexpensive catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) are required for largescale propylene production in industrial application. Compared to Pt- and Cr-based catalysts, Zn-based nanomaterial is a promising candidate due to its environmental friendliness and coking-resistant but remains a great challenge. In this study, we developed a novel multi-component structure consisting of low Pt and abundant active Zn species highly dispersed on Fe-doped S-1 zeolite as PDH catalyst. Specifically, Fe-doping in S-1 support provided anchoring sites for loading Zn species with uniform distribution. Moreover, the very small amount of Pt was applied as promoter, which is beneficial to achieve the re-dispersion of Zn species with the formation of Zn δ+ and Zn 2+ active sites. The resulting [email protected] catalyst exhibited the outstanding performance (conversion of propane: 40%, selectivity of propylene: 85%, and yield of propylene: 31.39%) as well as satisfactory regeneration ability. This improvement can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling between Pt promoter and the highly dispersed Zn species on modified S-1 support. This study opens a new way to design efficient and stable dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of propane to propylene (PDH) is a promising route to meet the ever-growing global propylene demand, but the industrial Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation derived from coke deposition and sintering under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, PtZn bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into high-silica SSZ-13 zeolites (PtZn@SSZ-13) were synthesized via a facile ligand-protected interzeolite transformation strategy. In a PDH reaction, the synthesized 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance with a propane conversion of 23.7% and a propylene selectivity of 96.8%, which is significantly better than that of PtZn supported on high-silica SSZ-13 (0.5Pt3Zn/SSZ-13). Particularly, the high catalytic activity of this catalyst can be kept during three successive oxidation–reduction cycles. Detailed characterizations including HAADF-STEM, XPS, UV–Vis, H 2 -TPR reveal that the remarkable improvement of PDH performance is attributed to the PtZn synergistic effect as well as the confinement of SSZ-13 zeolites. The DFT calculations and microkinetic simulations also evidenced that the Pt particles anchored on the Zn-doped SSZ-13 zeolite pore framework possessed obviously higher propane dehydrogenation activity, whereas the anti-coking ability of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 was also stronger than Pt (1 1 1) surface, demonstrating the superior performance of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of propane to propene in the presence of CO2 was investigated over zinc oxide supported on HZSM-5 with high Si/Al ratios. The stability of supported ZnO catalysts for the reaction improves with increasing the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support, while the catalytic activity shows a contrary trend. A highly active and stable catalyst, ZnO supported on HZSM-5 with a Si/Al ratio of 160, was obtained, with a propane conversion of 41.5% and a propene yield of 25.8% at steady state. The results of NH3-TPD and FT-IR spectra of pyridine adsorption reveal that the enhancement of the catalytic stability stems from the decrease in acidity of the catalysts, resulting in the suppression of the side reactions, such as cracking, oligomerization and aromatization. This can be verified by the fact that the amount of coke deposited on the catalyst diminishes with raising the Si/Al ratio of the HZSM-5 support. The promoting effect of CO2 on the dehydrogenation reaction is observed, which can be attributed to the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The catalytic stability is also enhanced by the introduction of CO2 to the feed gas.

Abstract:The oxide–zeolite (OX–ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has shown promising potential for selectivity control in syngas conversion by separating CO activation and C–C coupling onto oxides and zeolites, respectively. However, the structural effects of the oxides are far from being understood. Herein, we take a single component, ZnO, as a probe oxide in combination with SAPO-34 as a composite catalyst for light olefins synthesis from syngas. The space time yield of hydrocarbons significantly increases as the ZnO crystal size decreases from 79 to 23 nm, which can be attributed to more active centers available over smaller particles with a higher specific surface area. The apparent turnover frequency (TOF) for formation of light olefins (TOFlight olefins) increases over smaller ZnO particles, whereas TOFlight paraffins decreases, leading to an increased ratio of light olefins/light paraffins, which indicates that smaller particles benefit the formation of olefins. Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are promising materials for the propane dehydrogenation (PDH). The Pt sintering and carbon deposition are still the urgent problems to be solved in this system. This paper investigates an investigation of effect of perovskite-type oxide (PTO) lattice confinement on the catalytic performance of Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2 supported Pt–Ni bimetallic catalysts for PDH. The supported PTO precursors and derived catalysts were analyzed by XRD, H2-TPR, TEM, XPS and TG techniques. The results show that the Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are formed and highly dispersed on Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2. The optimized Pt loading amount is 0.4 wt%, which enhances the propane conversion to 38.6% and propene selectivity of 96.6%. The superior catalytic performance and anti-sintering and carbon deposition ability of Pt–Ni/Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2 catalyst are ascribed to the addition of appropriate Pt amount, which is beneficial to being confined in PTO lattice and building the abundant Pt–Ni alloy sites and moderate Pt–Ni interaction. Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) provides a promising way to meet the requirement of propylene supply, but the commonly-used Pt-based catalysts still suffer from unsatisfactory stability and deactivation. Herein, an interfacial regulation strategy is developed to construct the Cu, Pt, and Zn species modified hollow porous silicalite-1 (CuPt/Zn-HPS-1). Owing to the regulation role of Pt, the electron-deficient [ZnOH] + Lewis acid sites accelerated the C-H activation, which was beneficial to achieve the excellent PDH performance. More importantly, the additionally introduced Cu 2+ further modulated the geometric structure and electronic density of Pt, thus effectively improving the anti-sintering ability and alleviating the coke deposition. Benefiting from the interfacial regulation and Lewis active [ZnOH] + sites, the optimal CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic PDH performance with the initial propane conversion of 30.4 % and propylene selectivity of 99.0 %. The CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 also demonstrated robust recycling stability in reaction-regeneration cycling test with the smaller deactivation rate constant. This work affords a strategy for improving PDH performance in practical industrial application.

Abstract:Heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts are widely used in industrial processes, and the structural features of the bimetallic catalysts have profound impacts on their properties in numerous catalytic processes. Bimetallic nanoclusters with particle sizes ≤1 nm have shown better performances in various catalytic reactions in comparison to conventional bimetallic nanoparticles with sizes above 1 nm. Despite the progress made in recent years in the synthesis and catalytic studies of bimetallic nanoclusters, achieving a fundamental understanding of the structure–reactivity relationships at the molecular and atomic levels remains challenging because of the complexity of the bimetallic catalysts with particle sizes ≤1 nm. In this work, we have studied the structural features of supported bimetallic PtSn species with different sizes (∼0.6 to ∼1.6 nm), which is shown to be associated with the size-dependent formation process of bimetallic PtSn species according to theoretical modeling and experimental studies. Furthermore, the catalytic consequences of their size-dependent structural features are reflected in the dehydrogenation of propane to propylene, in which the subnanometer PtSn clusters are more active than the PtSn alloy nanoparticles.

Abstract:Co-based catalysts have shown great promise for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reactions due to their merits of environmental friendliness and low cost. In this study, ordered mesoporous molecular sieve-supported CoOx species (CoOx/Al-SBA-15 catalyst) were prepared by one-step organometallic complexation. The catalysts show worm-like morphology with regular straight-through mesoporous pores and high external specific surface area. These typical features can substantially enhance the dispersion of CoOx species and mass transfer of reactants and products. Compared with the conventional impregnation method, the 10CSOC (10 wt.% Co/Al-SBA-15 prepared by the organometallic complexation method) sample presents a smaller CoOx size and higher Co2+/Co3+ ratio. When applied to PDH reaction, the 10CSOC delivers higher propane conversion and propylene selectivity. Under the optimal conditions (625 °C and 4500 h-1), 10CSOC achieves high propane conversion (43%) and propylene selectivity (83%). This is attributed to the smaller and better dispersion of CoOx nanoparticles, more suitable acid properties, and higher content of Co2+ species. This work paves the way for the rational design of high-performance catalysts for industrially important reactions.
