Abstract:In the last decade, oil-based titanium dioxide nanofluids (TiO2 NFs) have attracted great interests due to their unique insulating properties and excellent thermal performance making them potential applications in the field of modified insulating oils. A timely comparison, analysis and summary of recent advances in the preparation, characterization, properties of different oil-based TiO2 NFs for oil-immersed power transformers will contribute to provide a useful reference for the subsequent development of such materials. Preparation methods are reviewed along with their merits and demerits. Characterization techniques including Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Optical microscope (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), Thermally stimulated current (TSC), Pulse electroacoustic technique (PEA), Finite element analysis (FEA), Fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectrometer and Zeta potential analysis are all applied to determine the crystal structure, particle size, surface function, surface charge and stability. Stabilization mechanisms are also discussed in detail. Some critical properties of oil-based TiO2 NFs under the application of different influencing factors (base oil, crystal structure, size of nanoparticles, surface modifier, mixing percentage, aging environment, etc.) are highlighted. Finally, existing challenges and perspectives are given for future researches.

Abstract:Nanofluids, formed by adding nanoscale particles to insulating oil, are stable and homogeneous suspensions that present advanced performance of electrical insulation and heat dissipation. This study shows a comprehensive literature review based on the related results of nano‐modified insulating oils (both mineral and vegetable insulating oils) to analyse the preparation methods, stability, dielectric spectroscopy, thermal conductivity, breakdown characteristics under AC and DC voltage, the thermal aging performance of nanofluids and oil–paper interaction. Then theoretical models have been introduced to explain the electrical mechanism of nanofluids. In addition, future research is proposed for nanofluids which would be low cost, highly stable and practically applicable to the power transformers.

Abstract:The oil-based nanofluids with greater dielectric strength have attracted much attention as a crucial insulating materials in high-voltage oil-immersed power equipment. In fact, the different microstructures of the transformer oil-based nanofluids (TNFs) would result in different dielectric properties. In this work, the broadband dielectric spectroscopy measurement was used to establish the linkage between the electric double layer (EDL) and dielectric response properties of TNFs which was performed at 298K temperature and with frequency range from 10-2Hz∼106Hz. The modified Havriliak-Negami (HN) model function was used to analyze the measured results. The results demonstrate that both the real and imaginary parts of dielectric spectra of two kinds of oil are composed of the conductivity and polarization process. Compared with pure oil, two polarization process could be observed for the TNFs, explained by the EDL structure reasonably. The introduction of the EDL structure provides an idea to account for the insulating strength improvement of TNFs for the first time.

Abstract:To alleviate the adverse impact due to the deterioration of electrical insulation, this paper presents an electromagnetic-thermal-fluid analysis for the prediction of temperature distribution in transformers with oil-based nanofluids or pure oil. The core loss and copper loss are taken as the heat sources for the temperature analysis using computational fluid dynamics. To strive for computing the temperature distribution accurately in the nano-oil, an effective numerical method using finite volume method and improved physical parameter model are employed. Numerical simulation of the thermal performance of the nanofluid with different volumetric fractions with Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanoparticles is compared with those using pure transformer oil in a 500 VA single-phase transformer. From the comparisons of the simulation results, it is found that the volumetric fraction 0.01% is an optimum concentration in reducing the transformer size for the same power rating. The observation is served as useful guidelines and detailed process for the design of oil-based power transformers.

Abstract:The dispersion stability of nano-modified transformer oil with the greater thermal conductivity and dielectric strength is a difficulty to be investigated. In order to have a deep understanding of the stable mechanism of nano-modified transformer oil, the total interaction energy was calculated by the molecular dynamic (MD) simulation based on the DLVO theory. A COMPASS force field was employed, and periodic boundary conditions were defined to build a MD simulation model of the nano-modified transformer oil. After the energy barrier and primary minimum energy were both considered, the optimal size of nanoparticles was determined for intrinsically stable suspensions in transformer oil. The results accurately estimated the best diameter of Al2O3 nanoparticles is 18nm for intrinsically stable dispersions of nanoparticles in transformer oil.

Abstract:Transformer oil is refined electrical insulating oil, which is extremely stable at high temperatures and possesses excellent electrical insulating properties. These special types of oils are widely used in high voltage apparatus such as power transformers, high voltage capacitors and circuit breakers. Traditionally, mineral oils have been most commonly used as a coolant or as electrical insulation medium. However, the main concern related to mineral oil is overheating, overloading, short circuits that reduce the shelf life of the transformer unit and restrict its function as a reliable coolant. Moreover, other factors such as high electrical insulation requirements, safety and economic aspects need to be considered for the development of new insulating liquid material. Nanofluids have become the one of the alternatives for the existing products available in the market because of its high thermo-physical and good dielectric properties. This review focuses on the status of nanofluids, the effect of different nanoparticles to enhance the dielectric as well as its heat transfer properties of nanofluids. The thermo-physical properties of the newly developed transformer oil based nanofluids reported in comparison with different oils. Finally, future directions and challenges need to be addressed.

Abstract:Nanotechnology provides an effective way to upgrade the thermophysical characteristics of dielectric oils and creates optimal transformer design. The properties of insulation materials have a significant effect on the optimal transformer design. Ester-based nanofluids (NF) are introduced as an energy-efficient alternative to conventional mineral oils, prepared by dispersing nanoparticles in the base oil. This study presents the effect of nanoparticles on the thermophysical properties of pure natural ester (NE) and synthetic ester (SE) oils with temperature varied from ambient temperature up to 80 °C. A range of concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) and TiO2 nanoparticles were used in the study to upgrade the thermophysical properties of ester-based oils. The experiments for thermal conductivity and viscosity were performed using a TC-4 apparatus that follows Debby’s concept and a redwood viscometer apparatus that follows the ASTM-D445 experimental standard, respectively. The experimental results show that nanoparticles have a positive effect on the thermal conductivity and viscosity of oils which reduces with an increase in temperature.

Abstract:In spite of the growing research in dielectric behavior of vegetable oils based dielectric nanofluids for transformers, there is no research available on the effect of these nanofluids on the constructional design parameters of transformers. This paper focuses on studying the dielectric behavior of graphene oxide nanoparticles dispersed green renewable dielectric fluid and its effects on the transformer size. The analysis of the design parameters has been done using a computational approach. The results show that the nanofluid immersed transformer core dimensions can be decreased by 38% with respect to the mineral oil immersed transformer.

Abstract:Well dispersed aluminium nitride(AlN) nanoparticles were synthesized by two-step ball milling coupled with surface coating. The AlN nanofluids (NFs) were prepared by dispersing as-prepared nanoparticles into transformer oil. The modified NFs is investigated as a new generation of transformer oil. The insulating properties have been investigated firstly. In the case of our AlN NFs with 0.079% < Phi < 0.159% (Phi means the volume concentration of AlN nanoparticles in the transformer oil), the positive lightning impulse breakdown voltage and partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) increased around 50% and 20% compared to those of the transformer oil while alternating current (AC) breakdown voltage decreased around 20-30%. However, it can still meet the demand of the standard below 330 kV. The results show that AlN NFs have a concentration dependence of AlN nanoparticles. The amount of large particles increases with the increasing concentration of AlN nanoparticles while trap density of NFs increases first and then decreases, both of which have an opposite effect on the dielectric strength. Furthermore, the experimental results showed that the thermal conductivity is increased by 3-7% because of the addition of AlN nanoparticles.

Abstract:Improving the thermal and dielectric properties of insulation oil (INO) with nanoadditives is an important challenge, and achieving dispersion stability in these nanofluids is quite challenging, necessitating further investigation. The main goal of this study is the synthesis and use of the hydrophobicity of zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanoparticles, which can improve both the thermal and dielectric properties of the INO. This oil is made from distillate (petroleum), including severely hydrotreated light naphthenic oil (75-85%) and severely hydrotreated light paraffinic oil (15-25%). A comprehensive investigation was carried out, involving the creation of nanofluids with ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles at various concentrations, and employing various characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), zeta potential analysis, and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The KD2 Pro thermal analyzer was used to investigate the thermal characteristics, including the thermal conductivity coefficient (TCC) and volumetric heat capacity (VHC). Under free convection conditions, the free convection heat transfer coefficient (FCHTC) and Nusselt numbers (Nu) were evaluated, revealing enhancements ranging from 14.15 to 11.7%. Furthermore, the most significant improvement observed in the AC Breakdown voltage (BDV) for nanofluids containing 0.1 wt% of ZnFe2O4 amounted to 17.3%. The most significant finding of this study is the improvement in the heat transfer performance, AC BDV, and stability of the nanofluids.
Optimizing dielectric strength and viscosity of synthetic ester with wide bandgap nano-additives

Abstract:This study explores the potential of insulating oil-based nanofluids as a promising alternative to traditional insulating oils. Specifically, we employ a thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) approach to characterize the effect of trapped charges on the dielectric strength of synthetic ester (SE) based oils (bare SE, SE/Co 3 O 4 , and SE/Al 2 O 3 ). The TSDC findings indicate that nanofluids exhibit higher current density peaks and trap energy levels than bare oil. Nonetheless, the AC breakdown voltage (BDV) of SE oils is significantly enhanced when nanoparticles are well-dispersed. The wide bandgap of Co 3 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles might be responsible for the increase in trap levels, enabling nanofluids to withstand higher AC electric field than pure oils. Additionally, we conduct statistical analyses of the AC BDV values of SE-based oils. Lastly, we find that nanofluids have a lower kinematic viscosity than bare oil.

Abstract:Nanoparticles enhance the electrical insulation and thermal properties of vegetable oil, and such improvements are desirable for its application as an alternative to traditional insulating oil for power transformers. However, the traditional method of insulating nanofluids typically achieves high electrical insulation but low thermal conductivity. This work reports an environmentally friendly vegetable oil using exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) showing high thermal conductivity and high electrical insulation. Stable nanofluids were prepared by liquid exfoliation of h-BN in isopropyl alcohol. With 0.1 vol.% of the nano-oil, the AC breakdown voltage increased by 18% at 25°C and 15% at 90°C. Both the positive and negative lightning impulse breakdown voltages of the nano-oil were also enhanced compared with those of the pure oil. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of the nano-oil increased by 11.9% at 25°C and 14% at 90°C. Given its high thermal conductivity, the nano-oil exhibited faster heating and cooling effects than the pure oil. Nano-oils with an electric field (either DC or AC) displayed a faster thermal response than that without an electric field. The reason is that h-BN is oriented under the electric field and formed a thermal network to increase the heat transfer.

Abstract:Context: Industrial production and humans cannot exist without energy, but the low efficiency of the heat transfer in the excessive use of energy is the most significant aspect of energy saving and emission reduction. Molecular dynamics simulation methods are devoted to simulate the heat transfer efficiency of a nanofluid system with different particle sizes, and the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of the nanofluid is simulated and studied from a microscopic perspective. The analysis showed that as nanoparticle size increases, the thermal conductivity of the Al-Ar nanofluid tends to decrease, but all of them are still higher than the thermal conductivity of the liquid argon system. According to the findings of the density and radial distribution function analyses, it can be seen that the microstructure of the system changes after putting solid nanoparticles to the original fluid. This alteration in the system's microstructure is the primary component responsible for the increased heat transfer efficiency of nanofluids. Methods: In this paper, based on the theory of molecular dynamics, the simulation calculations were mainly performed using LAMMPS software, which is a commonly used open source computational program in the field of MD simulation research. VMD is used for visualization and analysis. The Lennard-Jones potential function was used in the simulation to accurately describe the forces acting between the atoms.
Production and characterization of CuNiZnFe2O4 dispersed transformer and kerosene oil based magnetic nanofluids for heat transfer applications

Abstract:This study produced nanofluids via a two-step method by dispersing copper–nickel–zinc (CuNiZnFe2O4) ferrite nanocomposites in transformer and kerosene oils. A sol–gel auto-combustion approach was adopted to synthesize ferrite nanoparticles. The prepared nanoparticles were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The measured crystallite size varied between 11 and 13 nm. The SEM images show that the structures of the developed CuNiZn nanoparticles are irregular. The photoluminescence results give a bandgap of 1.91 eV and the emission lines of the nanoparticles. Transient hot wire analysis was performed to determine the thermal conductivity of the base fluid and the prepared nanofluids. It is observed that nanoparticles in the nanofluid enhance the heat transfer rate. It has been proven that CuNiZn/kerosene-based nanofluids have greater thermal conductivity than CuNiZn/transformer oil-based nanofluids. The viscosity of transformer oil-based nanofluids at room temperature is 12.53 mm2 s−1, which decreases to 12.49 mm2 s−1 at 40 °C. Similarly, the viscosity of kerosene-based nanofluids is 1.49 mm2 s−1 at room temperature and 1.16 mm2 s−1 at 40 °C. The sedimentation method revealed that CuNiZn/transformer oil-based nanofluids have greater stability than CuNiZn/kerosene-based nanofluids.

Abstract:The purpose of this present study is to prepare a stable mineral-oil (MO)-based nanofluid (NF) for usage as a coolant in a transformer. Nanoparticles (NPs) such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and titanium oxide (TiO2) have superior thermal and electrical characteristics. Their dispersion into MO is likely to elevate the electrothermal properties of NFs. Therefore, different batches of NFs are prepared by uniformly dispersing the insulating h-BN and semiconducting TiO2 NP of different concentrations in MO. Bulk h-BN NP of size 1μm is exfoliated into 2D nanosheets of size 150–200 nm, subsequently enhancing the surface area of exfoliated h-BN (Eh-BN). However, from the zeta-potential analysis, NP concentration of 0.01 and 0.1 wt.% are chosen for further study. The thermal conductivity and ACBDV studies of the prepared NF are performed to investigate the cooling and insulation characteristics. The charging-dynamics study verifies the enhancement in ACBDV of the Eh-BN NF. Weibull statistical analysis is carried out to obtain the maximum probability of ACBDV failure, and it is observed that 0.01 wt.% based NF has superior cooling and insulation properties than MO and remaining batches of NFs.

Abstract:This paper was written to demonstrate the value of using nanofluids for cooling high-power transformers while also providing current techniques for business and academia. A numerical analysis of the improvement caused by the cooling of a high-voltage transformer using nanofluids has been done. A tank with a temperature source inside and a charge of mineral oil-barium titanate nanoparticles is used to study natural convection. This study investigates the effects of variables on the thermal efficiency of the tank, including the thermal Rayleigh number and volume fraction. The results show that quenching varies with low and high Rayleigh thermal numbers and depends on the volume percentage of used nanoparticles. The effects were illustrated in thermal transfer rate representations as functions of the thermal Rayleigh number (Rat = 103 and 106) and the solid volume particle from the nanoparticles (0 ? ? < 10%). The findings showed that improving the solid volume particle of the nanoparticles by 10% causes the fluid being utilized to become more effectively conductive, which improves the rate of heat transfer by roughly 10% when compared to the case of the base fluid.

Superior dielectric breakdown strength of graphene and carbon nanotube infused nano oils

Abstract:Nano oils comprising Graphene nanoflakes and CNTs have been experimentally observed for the first time to exhibit augmented dielectric breakdown strengths compared to the base transformer oils. Variant nano oils comprising different Gr and CNT samples suspended in two different grades of transformer oils have yielded consistent and high degrees of enhancement in the breakdown strength. The apparent counter intuitive phenomenon of enhancing insulating caliber of fluids utilizing nanostructures of high electronic conductance has been shown to be physically consistent thorough theoretical analysis. The crux mechanism has been pin pointed as efficient charge scavenging leading to hampered streamer growth and development, thereby delaying probability of complete ionization. The mathematical analysis presented provides a comprehensive picture of the mechanisms and physics of the electrohydrodynamics involved in the phenomena of enhanced breakdown strengths. Furthermore, the analysis is able to physically explain the various breakdown characteristics observed as functions of system parameters, such as, nanostructure type, size distribution, relative permittivity, base fluid dielectric properties, nanomaterial concentration and nano oil temperature. The mathematical analyses have been extended to propose a physically and dimensionally consistent analytical model to predict the enhanced breakdown strengths of such nano oils from involved constituent material properties and characteristics. The model has been observed to accurately predict the augmented insulating property, thereby rendering it as an extremely useful tool for efficient design and prediction of breakdown characteristics of nanostructure infused insulating fluids.

Abstract:Power transformers are a critical component in transmission and distribution systems. To limit the temperature rise to extend the life-cycle while operating with enough reliability and controllability of a transformer, the design of the cooling system has attracted extensive research attention. In this paper, a topology optimization (TO) methodology is presented for designing the coolant flow paths in a prototype oil-natural air-natural (ONAN) power transformer to maximize the winding heat dissipation capacity without any compromise on the flow resistance. First, the thermal and fluid flow characteristics in both the winding and the radiator of the prototype transformer are numerically investigated through a fluidic-thermal coupled field approach. The preliminary cooling effectiveness of the oil circulation system is initialized. Second, a material-density-based TO scheme is employed to realize the optimal design of the oil baffle structures. In the TO optimization, artificial Darcy frictional forces are applied to the solidified cells to block their internal flows in the fluidic calculations, while the thermal conduction coefficients in those cells are enhanced to separate the baffles from the flowing oil in thermal analyses. Finally, the fluidic and thermal coupled fields of the prototype transformer winding region with structurally optimized oil baffles are numerically investigated to validate the TO effectiveness.

Abstract:This work presents the effect of nanoparticles (Al2O3 and TiO2) on methyl ester synthesized from palm kernel oil for oil-filled power equipment. It investigates the loss tangent, AC conductivity, and AC breakdown strength of the methyl ester-based nanofluid. The surface of the nanoparticles was functionalized with oleic acid before dispersing it into methyl ester to modify the stability of the mixture. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron dispersive X-ray was done on the two nanoparticles to know the morphology and elemental composition of the nanoparticles. The preparation of nanofluids was achieved through the dispersion of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1wt% of nanoparticles into the ester. It was observed that the loading of the two nanoparticles reduces the loss tangent and the AC conductivity of methyl ester but with a pronounced enhancement in Al2O3 nanofluid. The Weibull statistical analysis of the breakdown data shows that the dispersion of the nanoparticles in the base fluid increases the characteristic breakdown strength of the ester with an optimum performance at 0.6 wt%. The characteristic breakdown strength for TiO2 and Al2O3 nanofluid is 60.6 kV and 64.1 kV, respectively. The result revealed that Al2O3 nanofluid possesses the highest dielectric properties with low loss, low conductivity, and high characteristic breakdown strength which makes it a better replacement for mineral insulating oil.

Abstract:By scaling down scientific inquiry from a macroscopic level to a nanoscopic one, various existing problems in the disciplines of electricity, electronics, and mechanics were effectively overcome. Transformers are distinctive devices that have a reduced lifespan because of the oil they use having a low dielectric strength. This problem may be resolved by incorporating nanoparticles into the standard oil. Nevertheless, extensive research is always being conducted to achieve the economical production of nanoparticles for optimal usage. The main aim of this study is to explore the efficient and economical production of silica nanoparticles by sol–gel synthesis. The silica nanoparticles were analysed using X-ray diffraction, which revealed a prominent peak at Bragg angle 22 ° . This peak provides evidence for the presence of a hexagonal crystal structure in the nanoparticles. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study of the synthesised nanoparticles reveals the existence of O–H, Si–O–Si, and Si–OH functional groups at wavenumbers of 2956 cm −1 , 1126 cm −1 , and 976 cm −1 , respectively. The morphology and particle size of silica nanoparticles were analysed using the field emission scanning electron microscopy method. The research revealed that the nanoparticles had a spherical morphology, with an average particle size of around 36 nm, and exhibited little aggregation. The optical band gap of silica nanoparticles was calculated by using the Kubelka–Munk method, which included evaluating reflectance data acquired from a UV–VIS–NIR spectrophotometer. The calculated value for the optical band gap is 5.1 electron volts (eV). Furthermore, the incorporation of nanoparticles into the host Naphthenic mineral oil resulted in an increase in the breakdown voltage from 58.3 to 69.3 kV, as determined by the Jiantong 6801 Automatic 50 Hz Electrical Breakdown Tester in accordance with the IEC60156 standard. The rise in numbers may be attributed to the silica nanoparticles capacity to collect unbound electrons.
