Abstract:In this study we present numerical and scaling analyses of deformation and freezing processes of ferrofluid droplets under magnetic field effects. A multiphase flow model coupled with an enthalpy-based lattice Boltzmann model is developed to directly simulate the deformation and subsequent freezing processes of a ferrofluid droplet with considerations of both volume expansion and magnetization effects. Meanwhile, analytical models and scaling analyses are derived to reveal how the morphology of the ferrofluid droplet responds to the magnetic field and how the morphology evolution affects the freezing time. We find that the magnetic force induced by magnetic field gradient is much larger than that induced by the magnetization effect, leading to the flattening or elongation of a ferrofluid droplet under magnetic squeeze or lift conditions. The height of the ferrofluid droplet almost linearly decreases (increases) in the low magnetic strength regime for magnetic squeeze (lift) cases, while it follows a nonlinear scaling law under high magnetic squeeze conditions. Besides, the propagation of the freezing front well obeys the scaling law h similar to t(0)(.5) for high magnetic squeeze cases, but deviates much from that at the final freezing stage for both magnetic absence and lift cases.

Abstract:Preventing droplets from splashing after impacting a thin layer or liquid pool is crucial in reducing cross-contamination, the spread of pathogens, and rough surfaces in three-dimensional (3D) printing. In this article, we demonstrate that an external magnetic field can be useful to actively control the post-impact dynamics of ferrofluid droplets. A simplified lattice Boltzmann method (SLBM) is applied to simulate the flow field with lower computational cost. For the magnetic field, a self-correcting procedure is coupled with SLBM by setting a permanent magnet of desired magnetic field strength at any location of the computational domain. In this article, four different phenomena are simulated, including static contact angle, dynamic contact angle, splashing droplet on a thin layer, and falling droplet into a pool same liquid. From the first two examples, it is deduced that a vertical non-uniform magnetic field not only controls the spreading diameter and apex height but also the puffy shape appearing at droplet laterals. In examples three and four, even more intricate crown structures and wave propagation are successfully controlled with the help of a permanent magnet. It is also discovered that a magnetic field introduced at an optimal starting moment improves control and speeds up the whole procedure.

Magnetic regulation on evaporation behavior of ferrofluid sessile droplets

Abstract:Active magnetic regulation is an emerging subject due to the special and programmable wettability of the sessile ferrofluid droplet. The interaction between liquid and externally applied magnetic field gives rise to controllable spreading and thus evaporation. This work reports the experimental and numerical results of the natural evaporation of a ferrofluid droplet under the effect of a nonuniform magnetic field. The evaporation process of droplets is described into two stages in terms of the geometric distortion and the appearance of the deposition pattern. The presence of the magnetic field leads to a transition of droplet drying from the disk shape with a ring to multiple peaks. A numerical model is established to simulate the evaporation process of ferrofluid droplets with the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method for tracking droplet deformation. The increasing magnetic flux could effectively enlarge the contact radius and enhance the internal flow of the ferrofluid droplet, thus promoting the evaporation process. The numerical results are verified by comparing the droplet geometry deformation with the experimental results. In both the numerical and experimental investigations, the externally applied magnetic field shortens the process of ferrofluid droplet evaporation. The design and optimization of the magnetic field play an important role in regulating ferrofluid droplet evaporation, which in turn facilitates technological advances in industries such as evaporative cooling and inkjet printing.
Magnetic field based actuation and amalgamation of ferrofluid droplets on hydrophobic surface: An experimental and numerical study

Abstract:This article presents a detailed experimental analysis along with numerical simulations to provide the information about shape evolutions and mechanism of actuation and amalgamation of the ferrofluid droplets deposited on a hydrophobic surface by moving a permanent magnet. To validate the numerical methods used in this article, a benchmark phenomenon of a sessile droplet spreading under the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field is first simulated, and the results are compared with available experimental observations. To further ensure the accuracy of experimental and numerical techniques and to understand the wetting properties and spreading behavior of non-stationary ferrofluid droplets, a prototype demonstration of the merging droplets on a hydrophobic solid surface in the presence of a permanent magnet is designed. It is observed that for hydrophobic surfaces, the merging droplets entrap an air bubble at the time of first contact. Moreover, the physics behind the transient variations of droplet morphology and the effect of the state-of-the-art parameters on droplet actuation are also discussed. The force evaluation, energy variations, velocity contours, and velocity vectors of the moving droplet are provided to understand the internal behavior of droplet mobility. Experiments are performed several times with different speeds of moving a magnet to find the critical velocity when the droplet fails to follow the magnet motion. While doing so, we encounter an anomalous phenomenon of thread formation and daughter droplet generation at the receding end of the sliding droplet. A phase diagram is also provided in the end, which describes different regions of the sliding phenomenon.

Abstract:This paper reports the manipulation of ferrofluid droplets by using a microfluidic flow-focusing device equipped with a magnetic tweezer. Besides the traditional flow rate controlling method, the magnetic field also can be applied to control the size of the droplets. Two major effects in magnetic manipulation process: magnetoviscous effect and magnetic drag effect, were studied. Under a fixed flow rate (CP = 1 mL/h, DP = 0.2 mL/h), the average sizes of ferrofluid droplets were tunable from 135 to 95 μm by varying the magnetic field from 0 to 60 mT. Moreover, square wave magnetic field can be used to periodically generate droplets with different sizes. These results are helpful to understand the generation mechanism of the ferrofluid droplet and supply a novel method for manipulating droplets with a predetermined size and distribution.
Impingement of Ferrofluid Droplets on Superamphiphobic Surfaces under Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Ferrofluids are novel functional materials that have extensively been exploited in fluid-based management and control systems, and thus underlying the dynamic interactions between ferrofluid and solid under various conditions is rather essential. Herein, we report an experimental investigation on the impingement of millimeter-sized ferrofluid droplets on superamphiphobic surfaces. Comparing to droplet impact under no magnetic field, the employment of a non-uniform vertical magnetic field does not change the types of impact phenomena but alters their transitional boundaries and affects droplet dynamic behaviors. At low We, the magnetic force couples with hydrodynamic forces to slightly enlarge the upper threshold for complete rebound, while the enhanced droplet–surface adhesion prolongs the contact time and decreases the restitution coefficient of bouncing droplets; at intermediate We, the promoting effect of the magnetic field on partial rebound was also identified due to the strong droplet–surface adhesion and the additional magnetic force; at high We, a decrease in the damping coefficient and spring constant of the post-impact droplet oscillations emerges if a magnetic field is applied, which is attributed to the volume and shape effects and well explained by simple scaling analyses. We also demonstrate that upward jets are still stimulated in ferrofluid droplet impacts, but they follow scaling laws distinct from simple liquids. Regardless of whether a magnetic field is applied, ferrofluid droplet spreading is mainly dominated by capillary and inertial forces, and such a conclusion can only be drawn when the characteristic length scale for droplet inertia is correctly chosen for data analyses.

Abstract:In this article, we present the motion, deformation, and coalescence of ferrofluid droplets suspended in a nonmagnetic fluid, subjected to a uniform magnetic field in both vertical and horizontal directions. A coupling between the simplified multiphase lattice Boltzmann method and the self‐correcting scheme is constructed to numerically solve the two‐dimensional flow field and the magnetostatics equations, respectively. The Cahn‐Hilliard equation is employed to seize the diffuse interface between magnetic and nonmagnetic fluids. In order to validate the model, deformation of a ferrofluid droplet suspended in nonmagnetic fluid is simulated as a test case and the results are compared with numerical and experimental results. Furthermore, a detailed analysis on the behavior of falling ferrofluid droplets and the coalescence between a pair of ferrofluid droplets under the effect of different magnetic fields and different droplets configurations are also presented in this article. The results provide significant insight and a better understanding of these phenomena. It is found that for higher values of magnetic bond number and susceptibility, the droplet deformation is significant and the falling process is faster while a reverse behavior is observed for higher values of Eötvös number. Moreover, the magnetic energy density exhibits an interesting behavior in the vicinity of the droplets. It is concentrated between the droplets with a nonuniform distribution when the droplets are close to each other.

Abstract:Controlling the impact process of a droplet impacting a liquid film has remained a wide-open challenge. The existing passive techniques lack precise on-demand control of the impact dynamics of droplets. The present study introduces a magnet-assisted approach to control water droplets' impact dynamics. We show that by incorporating a thin, magnetically active ferrofluid film, the overall droplet impact phenomena of the water droplets could be controlled. It is found that by modifying the distribution of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) present inside the ferrofluid using a permanent magnet, the spreading and retraction behavior of the droplet could be significantly controlled. In addition to that, we also show that by altering the impact Weber number (Wei), and the magnetic Bond number (Bom), the outcomes of droplet impact could be precisely controlled. We reveal the role of the various forces on the consequential effects of droplet impact with the help of phase maps. Without the magnetic field, we discovered that the droplet impact on ferrofluid film results in no-splitting, jetting, and splashing regimes. On the other hand, the presence of magnetic field results in the no-splitting and jetting regime. However, beyond a critical magnetic field, the ferrofluid film gets transformed into an assembly of spikes. In such scenarios, the droplet impact only results in no-splitting and splashing regimes, while the jetting regime remains absent. The outcome of our study may find potential applications in chemical engineering, material synthesis, and three-dimensional (3D) printing where the control and optimization of the droplet impact process are desirable.

Abstract:The unique liquid nature and strong magnetic response ability enable ferrofluid droplets to split and self-assemble into reconfigurable three-dimensional structures. Although the manipulation of a ferrofluid droplet in a static or quasi-static state has been well studied, the splitting and self-assembly of ferrofluids in a dynamic state remain unexplored. Here, we report the impingement-assisted self-assembly of ferrofluids on superhydrophobic surfaces, whereby the required magnetic field is greatly reduced. In particular, the coupling between the magnetic field strength and Weber number endows a precise regulation of the ferrofluid post-impact dynamics, which facilitates the optimization of the self-assembly behavior. Finally, we demonstrate that the impingement-assisted self-assembly of ferrofluids can be generalized on various surfaces with different wettability. The fundamental understanding and the ability to self-assembly during droplet impingement can provide important insight into the dynamics of ferrofluid droplets as well as the applicability in multifunctional analytical and fluidic devices.

Abstract:Remote manipulation of droplets plays an important role in fields such as energy, bioanalysis and microfluidics. Despite efforts to develop many surfaces that respond to external stimuli for droplet manipulation, not all surfaces are responsive in practical applications, making droplet manipulation difficult to achieve. Manipulating droplets on unresponsive surfaces presents a formidable challenge. Our study unveils a covalently grafted slippery surface (CGSS) that is capable of proficiently manipulating ferrofluid droplets in the presence of a magnetic field. By adjusting the strength of the magnetic field applied, a horizontal CGSS can achieve efficient, long-range, and high-speed droplet transportation. On the tilted CGSS, droplets can be transported and aggregated against gravity. Magnetic field guidance allows for droplets to be programmatically guided along a desired trajectory. This research offers feasible strategies for developing new methods to manipulate droplets, which are anticipated to have significant applications in fields like microfluidics, drug delivery, and intelligent robotics.

Abstract:Ferrofluid as a smart fluid has a wide range of applications. Although the spreading dynamics of water droplets have been well investigated, spreading dynamics of ferrofluid droplets under a magnetic field has rarely been studied. This paper reports our findings of the impact dynamics of a ferrofluid droplet onto a tempered glass surface in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. The effects of magnetic intensity, impact velocity, and Fe3O4 nanoparticle concentration were investigated. It turned out that with the increased magnetic intensity, the height of the ferrofluid droplet would decrease owing to the energy dissipation increase of ferrofluids under a magnetic field and the additional stretching force in the vertical direction. Interestingly, we found that exertion of the magnetic field could significantly diminish the influence of velocity differences on the droplet spread dynamics in height direction. Satellite droplets were also observed in certain cases when the rebound kinetic energy could overcome the restraint of surface tension and adhesion of viscosity in the presence of the magnetic field. Our work will be a significant reference to with regard to various practical applications, especially when the impact dynamics of ferrofluid droplets need to be under precise control, for instance, as in three-dimensional printing or spray coating, etc.
Synchronous magnetic control of water droplets in bulk ferrofluid

Abstract:We present a microfluidic platform for two-dimensional manipulation of water droplets immersed in bulk oil-based ferrofluid. Although non-magnetic, the droplets are exclusively controlled by magnetic fields, without any pressure-driven flow. The diphasic fluid layer is trapped in a submillimeter Hele-Shaw chamber that includes permalloy tracks on its substrate. An in-plane rotating magnetic field magnetizes the permalloy tracks, thus producing local magnetic gradients, while an orthogonal magnetic field magnetizes the bulk ferrofluid. To minimize the magnetostatic energy of the system, droplets are attracted towards the locations of the tracks where ferrofluid is repelled. Using this technique, we demonstrate synchronous generation and propagation of water droplets, analyze PIV data of the bulk ferrofluid flow and study the kinematics of propagation. In addition, we show controlled break-up of droplets and droplet-to-droplet interactions. Finally, we discuss future applications owing to the potential biocompatibility of the droplets.

Experimental investigation of the effect of stable magnetic field on droplet freezing

Abstract:In this study, the effect of magnetic field on droplet freezing was investigated based on a visualization system. Possible influencing factors on droplet freezing, such as magnetic field intensity, cold surface temperature, and droplet volume, were considered in this study. During the two stages of droplet supercooling and freezing process, the changes of the droplet internal temperature, the formation of initial crystal nucleus, and the freezing time were observed. Experimental results show that in comparison with the non-magnetic surface, the supercooling degree of droplets was increased in the range of 150–300 mT magnetic field intensity, thereby prolonging the freezing time of droplets. Particularly, the droplet was best suppressed on a cold surface with 250 mT magnetic field intensity. The freezing time of droplets was prolonged by 132.0%. However, the droplets were accelerated to freeze on the cold surface with magnetic field intensities of 350 mT and 400 mT. Droplet freezing on cold surfaces was also affected by surface temperature and droplet volume. As the surface temperature of magnetic cooling dropped from −10 °C to −20 °C, the ability of the magnetic field to inhibit droplet freezing would be gradually weakened. With the increase of droplet volume from 20 μL to 50 μL, the initial freezing time of droplets was shortened. These results are related to the influence of magnetic field on the nucleation process and hydrogen bond in the water molecular cluster.

Abstract:Active components incorporated in materials generate motion by inducing conformational changes in response to external fields. Magnetic fields are particularly interesting as they can actuate materials remotely. Millimeter-sized ferrofluid droplets placed on a solid surface, surrounded by an ambient gas phase, are shown here to migrate under a rotating magnetic field due to the periodic deformation of the liquid-gas interface. This interface wobbling leads to droplet migration with speeds that increase as the amplitude and frequency of the magnetic field increase. In addition to migrating in a controlled manner, we demonstrate the ability of magnetic droplets to clean surface impurities and transport cargo.

Abstract:The effect of a magnetic field on condensed droplet freezing and frost formation was investigated using visualized experimental devices in this study. The size, shape, freezing time of droplets, and frost shape on the magnetic field considerably differ from those on the nonmagnetic surface. Moreover, the magnetic field could suppress droplet freezing and frost formation. The magnetic field suppression effect on droplet freezing and frost formation was analyzed according to the polarity characteristics of water molecules.

Abstract:Rheological properties are the theoretical basis and the key to common problems in ferrofluid applications, therefore they are expected to be adjustable to satisfy different technical requirements through altering the microstructure of ferrofluid during the process of preparation. In this paper, Four ferrofluid samples with different magnetic particle size were prepared by controlling the concentration of precursor solution during co-precipitation process and the rheological properties of these samples were investigated. These samples exhibited field-controlled rheological properties.Eternal magnetic field would enhance the formation of microstructures, resulting in an increase of viscosity. While with the increase of shear rate, microstructures tended to be destroyed, causing viscosity to decrease. There were two opposing mechanisms of the influence of precursor solution concentration. On one hand, the reduction of the precursor solution concentration would produce primary magnetic particles of smaller size. But on the other hand,the surfactant became insufficient to completely coat the magnetic particles because of an increased specific surface area, causing the magnetic particles to aggregate and form secondary clustering structures which strongly enhanced the magnetoviscous effect and weakened the viscoelastic effect.
Evaporation and Drying Characteristics of the Sessile Ferrofluid Droplet under a Horizontal Magnetic Field

Abstract:In this study, the evaporation characteristics and drying patterns of various sessile ferrofluid droplets on certain substrate under horizontal magnetic fields of controlled intensities are reported. The effects of droplet concentration and magnetic field intensity on the duration of each evaporation stage and drying patterns of droplets have been systematically investigated. It turned out that a plateau appears at the initial stage of evaporation in the absence of magnetic field and it was found that the plateau value is positively correlated with the concentration of ferrofluid droplets. Under the external magnetic field, the evaporation time of droplets decreases, the stage of contact line retreat extends, the stage of late pinning mode shortens, and the deposition area of ferrofluid droplet decreases compared to that of without magnetics field. The deposition area increases gradually and becomes more uniform with the increase of magnetic field. The decrease of friction force which is due to the decrease of the number of nanoparticles at the contact line under external magnetic field is the main reason for the observed phenomena. We found that the coffee ring and the uniform deposition inside the droplet will be destroyed when the magnetic field intensity is higher than a critical value. Our work has a significant reference value for the evaporation of sessile magnetic fluid droplets under the applied magnetic field, especially when the drying pattern needs to be precisely controlled, such as in spray or biomedicine.

Abstract:<p>The present study concerns the dynamics of ferrofluid droplets in a Newtonian fluid. The incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are applied for the dynamics of the immiscible magnetic and Newtonian fluids while the Cahn-Hilliard (C-H) equation is adopted to describe the behavior of their interface. A magnetic field coupling lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed to solve both the NS equations and the C-H equation. Specially, a mass-correcting term is introduced into the C-H equation, which strongly enforces the mass conservation. The magnetic field is evaluated by a Poisson equation solver with a self-correcting procedure for the static Maxwell equations. The magnetic dipole force is transformed into the magnetic surface force by a rigorous mathematical procedure, which can physically describe the magnetic effect on the interface. Moreover, the magnetic force after this treatment becomes easy-to-implement, which can be directly incorporated into the external force term of the LB model. The capability of the present combination method to simulate the magnetic multiphase flows is demonstrated by three typical numerical examples, i.e., Laplace law for a stationary droplet, a stationary cylinder under an external uniform magnetic field, the deformation of a single ferrofluid droplet. Further, the merging process of multiple-ferrofluid-droplet system in organic oil is investigated. It is found that the elongation of ferrofluid droplet in the direction of magnetic field shows positive impact on the merging process when the orientation of ferrofluid droplets is parallel to the external magnetic field, while negative impact on the merging process when their orientation is perpendicular to the external magnetic field.</p>

Agglomeration of aqueous ferrofluid subjected to the magnetic field by 3-D dissipative particle dynamics simulation

Abstract:Based on the coarse graining model of ferrofluid, dissipative particle dynamics simulations are performed in three-dimensional space to investigate the morphological characters and the distribution of agglomeration. Interaction parameters of components in ferrofluid are calculated by Flory-Huggins solution theory. The long-range interactions of magnetic nanoparticles are solved by ewald summation method. The simulation results show that no ordering microstructure is observed in ferrofluid when there is no magnetic field. The length and the diameter of chain-like agglomeration increase with strengthening the magnetic field. More chain-like agglomeration formats with higher concentration of magnetic nanoparticles and the length added as the concentration and the diameter of nanoparticles increase.

Abstract:In this article, the dynamics of ferrodroplet deformation and bubbles merging within the ferrofluid under a uniform magnetic field are studied through numerical simulations. A recently developed simplified multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (SMLBM) is used to capture the hydrodynamic behavior of ferrofluids, the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation is employed as the interface tracking algorithm, whose solution is also obtained within the lattice Boltzmann framework and a self-correcting procedure is used to solve the magnetic field along with conjugate boundary conditions for a smooth transition of magnetic permeability at the interface. A series of numerical simulations are performed for a range of magnetic field strength, magnetic susceptibility and Ohnesorge number (Oh), along with a comparison between obtained results and previous experimental and numerical results. The dynamical behavior of ferrodroplets and bubbles merging in ferrofluids is analyzed through the distribution of magnetic field and magnetic flux density, velocity contours, pressure variations, the magnetic energy density and the effect of inertia. Findings of this study may help to explain the mechanism of ferrodroplet deformation and merging of bubbles within the ferrofluid and provide a useful insight into the distribution of flow variables during these deformations and merging phenomena.
