Abstract:Preventing droplets from splashing after impacting a thin layer or liquid pool is crucial in reducing cross-contamination, the spread of pathogens, and rough surfaces in three-dimensional (3D) printing. In this article, we demonstrate that an external magnetic field can be useful to actively control the post-impact dynamics of ferrofluid droplets. A simplified lattice Boltzmann method (SLBM) is applied to simulate the flow field with lower computational cost. For the magnetic field, a self-correcting procedure is coupled with SLBM by setting a permanent magnet of desired magnetic field strength at any location of the computational domain. In this article, four different phenomena are simulated, including static contact angle, dynamic contact angle, splashing droplet on a thin layer, and falling droplet into a pool same liquid. From the first two examples, it is deduced that a vertical non-uniform magnetic field not only controls the spreading diameter and apex height but also the puffy shape appearing at droplet laterals. In examples three and four, even more intricate crown structures and wave propagation are successfully controlled with the help of a permanent magnet. It is also discovered that a magnetic field introduced at an optimal starting moment improves control and speeds up the whole procedure.

Abstract:The cloaking of the droplet and solid spheres by a thin ferrofluid layer forms a ferrofluid-wetting ridge, enabling the magnet-assisted directional manipulation of droplets and solid spheres on the magneto-responsive slippery surface. Understanding the interplay of various forces governing motion unravels the manipulation mechanism. The transportation characteristics of droplets and solid spheres on such surfaces enable their controlled manipulation in multiple applications. Here, we prepare magneto-responsive slippery surfaces by using superhydrophobic coatings on glass slides, creating a porous network and impregnating them with ferrofluid. Using a permanent magnet (and its translation) in the proximity of these surfaces, we manipulate the motion of liquid drops and solid spheres. Upon dispensing the droplet on the magneto-responsive slippery surface, the droplet is cloaked by a thin ferrofluid layer and forms a ferrofluid wetting ridge. Incorporating the magnetic field creates a magnetic-nanoparticle-rich zone surrounding the ferrofluid ridge. Thereafter, the motion of the magnet gives rise to the movement of the droplet. We found that the interplay of the magnetic force and viscous drag leads to the magnetic manipulation of droplets in a controlled fashion up to a certain magnet speed. Increasing the magnet speed further results in the uncontrolled motion of the droplet, where the droplet cannot follow the magnet trajectory. Moreover, we delineate multifunctional droplet manipulations, such as trapping, pendant droplet manipulation, coalescence, and microchemical reactions, which have wide engineering applications.

Abstract:This article presents a detailed experimental analysis along with numerical simulations to provide the information about shape evolutions and mechanism of actuation and amalgamation of the ferrofluid droplets deposited on a hydrophobic surface by moving a permanent magnet. To validate the numerical methods used in this article, a benchmark phenomenon of a sessile droplet spreading under the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field is first simulated, and the results are compared with available experimental observations. To further ensure the accuracy of experimental and numerical techniques and to understand the wetting properties and spreading behavior of non-stationary ferrofluid droplets, a prototype demonstration of the merging droplets on a hydrophobic solid surface in the presence of a permanent magnet is designed. It is observed that for hydrophobic surfaces, the merging droplets entrap an air bubble at the time of first contact. Moreover, the physics behind the transient variations of droplet morphology and the effect of the state-of-the-art parameters on droplet actuation are also discussed. The force evaluation, energy variations, velocity contours, and velocity vectors of the moving droplet are provided to understand the internal behavior of droplet mobility. Experiments are performed several times with different speeds of moving a magnet to find the critical velocity when the droplet fails to follow the magnet motion. While doing so, we encounter an anomalous phenomenon of thread formation and daughter droplet generation at the receding end of the sliding droplet. A phase diagram is also provided in the end, which describes different regions of the sliding phenomenon.

Abstract:Droplet actuation on wires or fibers is highly relevant to digital microfluidics applications. Several different passive or active actuation mechanisms have been studied, including capillary pressure, thermal gradient, tilting, acoustics, and electrowetting, to name a few. However, the lack of precise control and accurate droplet positioning during its actuation on a wire limits the use of earlier methods. On the other hand, using a nonuniform magnetic field to actuate a droplet on a micrometer-size wire helps overcome the above limitations. In this context, we elucidate the motion of microliter-size ferrofluid droplets, smaller than the capillary length, in the presence of a permanent magnet using a simple yet robust experimental setup, wherein the clamshell shape droplets hang on a wire at a predetermined distance from the magnet. Beyond a critical volume, the droplet starts moving toward the magnet while exhibiting shape evolution continuously. Using a high-speed videography technique, we uncover the intricate relationship between the magnetowetting, favoring continuous shape evolution of droplets of different sizes, and their actuation dynamics (velocity) on a wire, which has scarcely been explored. The most significant contribution of this study is the detailed evaluation of the shape factor (k), relating the shape evolution of the droplet to its velocity through the contact angle hysteresis force. A theoretical framework has also been proposed, comprising different forces in action, which is found to set forth a good match with the experimental results. The results from this study are expected to open up new avenues in digital microfluidics, specifically in drug delivery, ferrobotics, and droplet logic gates, to name a few.
Synchronous magnetic control of water droplets in bulk ferrofluid

Abstract:We present a microfluidic platform for two-dimensional manipulation of water droplets immersed in bulk oil-based ferrofluid. Although non-magnetic, the droplets are exclusively controlled by magnetic fields, without any pressure-driven flow. The diphasic fluid layer is trapped in a submillimeter Hele-Shaw chamber that includes permalloy tracks on its substrate. An in-plane rotating magnetic field magnetizes the permalloy tracks, thus producing local magnetic gradients, while an orthogonal magnetic field magnetizes the bulk ferrofluid. To minimize the magnetostatic energy of the system, droplets are attracted towards the locations of the tracks where ferrofluid is repelled. Using this technique, we demonstrate synchronous generation and propagation of water droplets, analyze PIV data of the bulk ferrofluid flow and study the kinematics of propagation. In addition, we show controlled break-up of droplets and droplet-to-droplet interactions. Finally, we discuss future applications owing to the potential biocompatibility of the droplets.

Abstract:Magnetically responsive surfaces have received increasing attention because of their convenience, immediate response, remote controllability, and well biocompatibility. A facile way is designed to prepare magnetically responsive superhydrophobic surfaces by one‐step spray coating coupled with magnetic induction. These surfaces with responsive properties can find applications in liquids manipulation. The influences of different Fe3O4 content on the surface morphology and wettability are investigated. The unidirectional, bidirectional, random‐path, and inclined surfaces microdroplet manipulation in an active, noncontact, and fast manner is demonstrated on the prepared surfaces. The model of microdroplet manipulation is established, and its mechanism is explained. Moreover, manipulation of different volumes and different types of microdroplets including water droplets and normal saline is realized. Such magnetically responsive superhydrophobic surfaces not only provide new approach for low‐loss droplet manipulation and transportation but also develop new ways for the realization of programmable and intelligent microfluidic systems. Magnetically responsive superhydrophobic surfaces are designed by one‐step spray coating coupled with magnetic induction. The microdroplet manipulation in an active, noncontact, and instantaneous manner is demonstrated on the prepared surfaces. Such magnetically responsive superhydrophobic surfaces not only provide new approach for lossless microdroplet manipulation and transportation but also develop new ways for the realization of programmable and intelligent microfluidic systems.

Abstract:This article presents experimental and theoretical studies of the impacting behavior of ferrofluid droplets on porous substrates under the influence of magnetic fields. The effects of magnetic field strength and porous substrates on the falling, impacting, and spreading of the droplets are investigated. Theoretical models are successfully derived to predict the droplet impacting velocity in the presence of the magnetic field and the maximum spreading factor of the droplets on the porous substrates without considering magnetic field effects, respectively. Moreover, a universal scaling law is constructed for the maximum spreading factor of the ferrofluid droplets on both of the porous and smooth substrates in the presence of the magnetic field. The findings of this study can provide a foundation for understanding the impacting dynamics of ferrofluid droplets on the substrates and optimizing their applications in various fields, such as three-dimensional printing and microfluidic technology.
Hydrodynamics of magnetic fluid droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces

Abstract:The study reports the aspects of postimpact hydrodynamics of ferrofluid droplets on superhydrophobic SH surfaces in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field. A wide gamut of dynamics was observed by varying the impact Weber number We, the Hartmann number Ha and the magnetic field strength manifested through the magnetic Bond number Bom. For a fixed We 60, we observed that at moderately low Bom 300, droplet rebound off the SH surface is suppressed. The noted We is chosen to observe various impact outcomes and to reveal the consequent ferrohydrodynamic mechanisms. We also show that ferrohydrodynamic interactions leads to asymmetric spreading, and the droplet spreads preferentially in a direction orthogonal to the magnetic field lines. We show analytically that during the retraction regime, the kinetic energy of the droplet is distributed unequally in the transverse and longitudinal directions due to the Lorentz force. This ultimately leads to suppression of droplet rebound. We study the role of Bom at fixed We 60, and observed that the liquid lamella becomes unstable at the onset of retraction phase, through nucleation of holes, their proliferation and rupture after reaching a critical thickness only on SH surfaces, but is absent on hydrophilic surfaces. We propose an analytical model to predict the onset of instability at a critical Bom. The analytical model shows that the critical Bom is a function of the impact We, and the critical Bom decreases with increasing We. We illustrate a phase map encompassing all the post impact ferrohydrodynamic phenomena on SH surfaces for a wide range of We and Bom.

Spreading Dynamics of an Impinging Ferrofluid Droplet on Hydrophilic Surfaces under Uniform Magnetic Fields

Abstract:This paper reports a numerical investigation on the spreading dynamics of an impinging ferrofluid droplet on solid hydrophilic surfaces (i.e., theta(w) <= 60 degrees) in the presence of uniform magnetic fields. A finite element method-based commercial solver is implemented to perform several numerical simulations, which uses a phase-field (PF) method to couple both the flow and magnetic fields. The results demonstrate that a uniform magnetic field is capable of controlling the spreading dynamics of an impinging droplet on hydrophilic substrates. Additionally, the application of a magnetic field results in the generation of a steady-state droplet shape with a reduced base diameter and an increased apex height at higher magnetic Bond numbers at the end of the spreading process. Moreover, as the viscosity of the droplet decreases, the droplet experiences an increase in its primary spreading diameter, which can be even reduced through the implementation of a vertical uniform magnetic field. Additionally, an oscillatory motion appears in a droplet during the spreading phenomenon at lower Ohnesorge numbers (i.e., Oh = 0.023), which is further sustained for a longer period of time in the relaxation phase with increased amplitudes in the case of an extremely low-viscosity droplet (i.e., Oh = 0.002) before attaining a final equilibrium shape. Furthermore, at Oh = 0.002, the droplet undergoes a breakup event after the impact for a short period of time, while the magnetic field induces an elastic behavior in a droplet at lower viscosities (i.e., Oh = 0.023) during the free fall under gravity.

Abstract:This paper reports the manipulation of ferrofluid droplets by using a microfluidic flow-focusing device equipped with a magnetic tweezer. Besides the traditional flow rate controlling method, the magnetic field also can be applied to control the size of the droplets. Two major effects in magnetic manipulation process: magnetoviscous effect and magnetic drag effect, were studied. Under a fixed flow rate (CP = 1 mL/h, DP = 0.2 mL/h), the average sizes of ferrofluid droplets were tunable from 135 to 95 μm by varying the magnetic field from 0 to 60 mT. Moreover, square wave magnetic field can be used to periodically generate droplets with different sizes. These results are helpful to understand the generation mechanism of the ferrofluid droplet and supply a novel method for manipulating droplets with a predetermined size and distribution.

Abstract:Magnetocontrollable droplet mobility on surfaces of both solids and simple fluids have been widely used in a wide range of applications. However, little is understood about the effect of the magnetic field on the wettability and mobility of droplets on structured fluids. Here, we report the manipulation of the dynamic behaviors of water droplets on a film of thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs). We find that the static wetting behavior and static friction of water droplets on a 4′-octyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (8CB) film strongly depend on the LC mesophases, and that a magnetic field caused no measurable change to these properties. However, we find that the droplet dynamics can be affected by a magnetic field as it slides on a nematic 8CB film, but not on isotropic 8CB, and is dependent on both the direction and strength of the magnetic field. By measuring the dynamic friction of a droplet sliding on a nematic 8CB film, we find that a magnetic field alters the internal orientational ordering of the 8CB which in turn affects its viscosity. We support this interpretation with a scaling argument using the LC magnetic coherence length that includes (i) the elastic energy from the long-range orientational ordering of 8CB and (ii) the free energy from the interaction between 8CB and a magnetic field. Overall, these results advance our understanding of droplet mobility on LC films and enable new designs for responsive surfaces that can manipulate the mobility of water droplets.

Digital Microfluidics: Magnetic Transportation And Coalescence Of Sessile Droplets On Hydrophobic Surfaces

Abstract:Magnetic digital microfluidics is advantageous over other existing droplet manipulation methods, which exploits magnetic forces for actuation and offers the flexibility of implementation in resource-limited point-of-care applications. This article discusses the dynamic behavior of a pair of sessile droplets on a hydrophobic surface under the presence of a permanent magnetic field. A phase field method-based solver is employed in a two-dimensional computational domain to numerically capture the dynamic evolution of the droplet interfaces, which again simultaneously solves the magnetic and flow fields. On a superhydrophobic surface (i.e., theta(c) = 150 degrees), the nonuniform magnetic field forces the pair of sessile droplets to move toward each other, which eventually leads to a jumping off phenomenon of the merged droplet from the solid surface after coalescence. Also, there exists a critical magnetic Bond number Bomcr, beyond which no coalescence event between droplets is observed. Moreover, on a less hydrophobic surface (theta(c) = 120 degrees), the droplets still coalesce under a magnetic field, although the merged droplet does not experience any upward flight after coalescence. Also, the merging phenomenon at lower contact angle values (i.e., theta(c) = 90 degrees) appears significantly different than at higher contact angle values (i.e., theta(c) = 120 degrees). Additionally, if the pair of sessile droplets is dispersed to a different surrounding medium, the viscosity ratio plays a significant role in the upward flight of the merged droplet, where the coalesced droplet exhibits increased vertical migration at higher viscosity ratios.

Abstract:The unique liquid nature and strong magnetic response ability enable ferrofluid droplets to split and self-assemble into reconfigurable three-dimensional structures. Although the manipulation of a ferrofluid droplet in a static or quasi-static state has been well studied, the splitting and self-assembly of ferrofluids in a dynamic state remain unexplored. Here, we report the impingement-assisted self-assembly of ferrofluids on superhydrophobic surfaces, whereby the required magnetic field is greatly reduced. In particular, the coupling between the magnetic field strength and Weber number endows a precise regulation of the ferrofluid post-impact dynamics, which facilitates the optimization of the self-assembly behavior. Finally, we demonstrate that the impingement-assisted self-assembly of ferrofluids can be generalized on various surfaces with different wettability. The fundamental understanding and the ability to self-assembly during droplet impingement can provide important insight into the dynamics of ferrofluid droplets as well as the applicability in multifunctional analytical and fluidic devices.

Abstract:Remote manipulation of droplets plays an important role in fields such as energy, bioanalysis and microfluidics. Despite efforts to develop many surfaces that respond to external stimuli for droplet manipulation, not all surfaces are responsive in practical applications, making droplet manipulation difficult to achieve. Manipulating droplets on unresponsive surfaces presents a formidable challenge. Our study unveils a covalently grafted slippery surface (CGSS) that is capable of proficiently manipulating ferrofluid droplets in the presence of a magnetic field. By adjusting the strength of the magnetic field applied, a horizontal CGSS can achieve efficient, long-range, and high-speed droplet transportation. On the tilted CGSS, droplets can be transported and aggregated against gravity. Magnetic field guidance allows for droplets to be programmatically guided along a desired trajectory. This research offers feasible strategies for developing new methods to manipulate droplets, which are anticipated to have significant applications in fields like microfluidics, drug delivery, and intelligent robotics.

Abstract:AbstractDroplets and bubbles have a wide range of applications in industry, agriculture, and daily life, and their controllable manipulation is of significant scientific and technological importance. Versatile magnetically responsive manipulation strategies have been developed to achieve precise control over droplets and bubbles. To manipulate nonmagnetic droplets or bubbles with magnetic fields, the presence of magnetic medium is indispensable. Magnetic additives can be added to the surface or interior of droplets and bubbles, allowing for on‐demand manipulation by direct magnetic actuation. Alternatively, magnetically responsive elastomer substrates can be used to actuate droplets and bubbles by controlling the deformation of microstructures on the substrates through magnetic stimulation. Another strategy is based on untethered magnetic devices, which enables free mobility, facilitating versatile manipulation of droplets and bubbles in a flexible manner. This paper reviews the advances in magnetically responsive manipulation strategies from the perspective of droplets and bubbles. An overview of the different classes of magnetic medium, along with their respective corresponding droplet/bubble manipulation methods and principles, is first introduced. Then, the applications of droplet/bubble manipulation in biomedicine, microchemistry, and other fields are presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities related to regulating droplet/bubble behavior using magnetic fields are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible actuation of droplets is crucial for biomedical and industrial applications. Hence, various approaches using optical, electrical, and magnetic forces have been exploited to actuate droplets. For broad applicability, an ideal approach should be programmable and be able to actuate droplets of arbitrary size and composition. Here we present an “additive-free” magnetic actuation method to programmably manipulate droplets of water, organic, and biological fluids of arbitrary composition, as well as solid samples, on a ferrofluid-infused porous surface. We specifically exploit the spontaneously formed ferrofluid wetting ridges to actuate droplets using spatially varying magnetic fields. We demonstrate programmed processing and analysis of biological samples in individual drops as well as the collective actuation of large ensembles of micrometer-sized droplets. Such model respiratory droplets can be accumulated for improved quantitative and sensitive bioanalysis - an otherwise prohibitively difficult task that may be useful in tracking coronavirus.

Numerical Simulation of Maximum Spreading of an Impacting Ferrofluid Droplet under a Vertical Magnetic Field

Abstract:Theoretical modeling is proposed to predict the maximum spreading of water-based ferrofluid droplets impacting upon dry surfaces influenced by a vertical magnetic field. Constructed on the principle of energy balance, this model demonstrates excellent agreement with numerical findings across various impact velocities, contact angles, and magnetic strengths. Notably, as magnetic field strength escalates, magnetic forces prevail over viscous and capillary forces, exerting a significant influence on spreading dynamics and diminishing the maximum spreading diameter of ferrofluid droplets if the impacting shape is spherical. However, for freely falling droplets, the shape becomes prolate before impacting and the promoted surface energy balances the magnetic inhibitory effect on droplet spreading, thus resulting in an almost unchanged maximum spreading diameter. By postulating complete conversion of initial kinetic energy into magnetic energy, a scaling law is derived for maximum spreading diameter under extremely high magnetic fields. Further interpolation with viscous dissipation and capillary effects enables universal rescaling under diverse impact conditions. Through comparison with numerical outcomes, the validity of our theoretical model is affirmed, establishing a balanced formula between distinct energy components for predicting maximum spreading diameter of ferrofluid droplets accurately.
A New Drop Fluidics Enabled by Magnetic Field Mediated Elasto-Capillary Transduction

Abstract:This research introduces a new drop fluidics, which uses a deformable and stretchable elastomeric film as the platform, instead of the commonly used rigid supports. Such a soft film impregnated with magnetic particles can be modulated with an external electromagnetic field that produces a vast array of topographical landscapes with varying surface curvature, which, in conjunction with capillarity, can direct and control motion of water droplets efficiently and accurately. When a thin layer of oil is present on this film that is deformed locally, a centrosymmetric wedge is formed. A water droplet placed on this oil laden film becomes asymmetrically deformed thus producing a gradient of Laplace pressure within the droplet setting it to motion. A simple theory is presented that accounts for the droplet speed in terms of such geometric variables as the volume of the droplet and the thickness of the oil film covering the soft elastomeric film, as well as such material variables as the viscosity of the oil and interfacial tension of the oil-water interfaces. Following the verification of the theoretical result using well-controlled model systems, we demonstrate how the electromagnetically controlled elasto-capillary force can be used to manipulate the motion of single and/or multiple droplets on the surface of the elastomeric film and how such elementary operations as drop fusion and thermally addressed chemical transformation can be carried out in aqueous droplets. It is expected that the resulting drop fluidics would be suitable for digital control of drop motion by simply switching on and off the electromagnetic fields applied at different positions underneath the elastomeric film. We anticipate that this method of directing and manipulating water droplets is poised for its applications in various biochemical reaction engineering, an example of which is Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

Abstract:Abstract Smart manipulation of liquid/bubble transport has garnered widespread attention due to its potential applications in many fields. Designing a responsive surface has emerged as an effective strategy for achieving controllable transport of liquids/bubbles. However, it is still challenging to fabricate stable amphibious responsive surfaces that can be used for the smart manipulation of liquid in air and bubbles underwater. Here, amphibious slippery surfaces are fabricated using magnetically responsive soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) doped with iron powder and silicone oil. The slippery gel surface retains its magnetic responsiveness and demonstrates strong affinity for bubbles underwater but shows small and switching resistance forces with the water droplets in air and bubbles underwater, which is the key factor for achieving the controllable transport of liquids/bubbles. On the slippery gel surface, the sliding behaviors of water droplets and bubbles can be reversibly controlled by alternately applying/removing an external magnetic field. Notably, compared with slippery liquid‐infused porous surfaces, the slippery gel surface demonstrates outstanding stability, whether in air or underwater, even after 100 cycles of alternately applying/removing the magnetic field. This surface shows potential applications in gas/liquid microreactors, gas–liquid mixed fluid transportation, bubble/droplet manipulation, etc.

Magnetic Field-Assisted Fission of a Ferrofluid Droplet for Large-Scale Droplet Generation

Abstract:With the presence of an external magnetic field, a ferrofluid droplet exhibits a rich variety of interesting phenomena notably different from nonmagnetic droplets. Here, a ferrofluid droplet impacting on a liquid-repellent surface is systematically investigated using high-speed imaging. The pre- and post-impact, including the droplet stretching, maximum spreading diameter, and final impact modes, are shown to depend on the impact velocity and the magnitude of the external magnetic field. A scaling relation involving the Weber and magnetic Bond numbers is fitted to predict the maximum spreading diameter based on the magnetic field-induced effective surface tension. The impact outcome is also investigated and classified into three patterns depending on the occurrence of the rim interface instability and the fission phenomenon. Two types of fission (i.e., evenly and unevenly distributed sizes of the daughter droplets) are first identified, and the corresponding mechanism is revealed. Last, according to Rayleigh-Taylor instability, a semiempirical formula is proposed to estimate the number of the daughter droplets in the regime of evenly distributed size, which agrees well with the experimental data. The present study can provide more insight into large-scale droplet generation with monodispersive sizes.
